What do you think yours will be? ▼ 2 Why opt for a laser correction procedure? For you, at this moment as you read this, it may be very difficult to imagine life without glasses or lenses, especially if you have been dependent on them for many years. Your life has adapted to wearing them. Take glasses and contact lenses away and your future everyday life experiences will be different; waking up in the morning without them, driving, cooking, reading, holidays, swimming, sports; they will all seem very different. do not allow “patient care staff” or “customer advisors” to carry out any diagnostics that will determine your final treatment plan. You will be dealt with by an eyecare professional. Accuvision Laser Eye Clinics... where people like you come first. But if your focus is imperfect (i.e. when the cornea, lens or eye is an irregular shape), light cannot focus accurately on the retina and the image you see is blurred. Laser vision correction is ideally suited to the treatment of such conditions. POINT OF FOCUS POINT OF FOCUS LIGHT ENTERING EYE Shortsight (Myopia) If distant objects are blurred, you may be shortsighted. In this case your eye is too long, so that rays of light fall in front of the retina and not directly on it. Normal eye In a normal (emmetropic) eye, the cornea and lens are matched to the length of the eye, focussing light directly on the retina. This produces a perfectly focussed image at all distances. LIGHT ENTERING EYE ▼ LIGHT ENTERING EYE ▼ POINT OF FOCUS Longsight (Hyperopia) If close objects are blurred, you may be longsighted. Your eye is too short, causing incoming light rays to fall behind your retina and not directly on it. ACCUVISION Vision for a clearer future ▼ LIGHT ENTERING EYE POINTS OF FOCUS ▼ Your eyes work just like a camera. Light rays pass through the clear part at the front (the cornea) then through the lens, which focuses them onto the ‘screen’ at the back of the eye (the retina). There, millions of photoreceptors (light-sensitive nerve cells) turn the image into electrical impulses that are transmitted to your brain through the optical nerve. Astigmatism Both shortsighted and longsighted eyes can also have astigmatism. The cornea is not perfectly round but shaped more like a rugby ball. Therefore, rays of light are bent in different directions and do not form a sharp focus point, so that images blur. Age-related longsight (Presbyopia) This occurs in many people as they get older, traditionally requiring reading glasses or bifocal lenses to correct. The lens in the eye gradually stiffens as it matures and thus loses it’s ability to accommodate light rays efficiently. Treatments are available from Accuvision which can offer excellent results for people with this condition, please see page 12 for further information. “I was – 9.00 in both eyes, so was delighted when Accuvision were able to treat me. I had previously gone to another well known clinic who advised that I was not suitable, so to have a positive response from Accuvision was great.” SALLY GILBERT ▼ 3 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:50 Page 9 IS LASER SURGERY RIGHT FOR YOU ? Laser eye surgery may not be suitable for everyone and for many patients the clinic may not be suitable for the patient. Accuvision have the technology, surgical skills and clinical experience to safely treat the highest and most complex prescriptions that other clinics are unable to treat. Treatment eligibility Every week we successfully treat patients who have been refused at other laser eye surgery clinics because they are unable to provide the leading edge solutions Accuvision can. However, we will decline treatment if we believe the outcome cannot be accurately predicted or if treatment is likely to cause complications. In general, the suitability of our procedures for you depends on factors such as: • Your age (over 18 years) • Stability of your current prescription • The degree of optical error • The thickness of your cornea • The existence of any eye disease • The size of your pupil • Corneal mapping data • Wavefront analysis results If you have been told by another clinic that you are unsuitable for laser eye surgery give us a call. If anyone can help you, we can. Please note: This is intended as a general guide and there are always exceptions. Detailed analysis of your eligibility for treatment can only be achieved at your consultation. ▼ 4 Yorkshire and England cricketer, Tim Bresnan had laser eye surgery with Accuvision prior to the England Ashes win in Australia in 2011. 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:50 Page 10 YOUR INITIAL CONSULTATION The basis for successful treatment of visual disorders is an accurate diagnosis. At your initial consultation, a fully qualified Accuvision optometrist will perform a series of diagnostic tests and scans to accurately assess the condition and suitability of your eyes. Next, using our highly sophisticated Wavefront Analyzer a precise three dimensional mapping of any visual imperfections is generated. This equipment allows an unprecedented level of accuracy and the data collected is used by the surgeon to create a personalised laser correction treatment ideally matched to your eyes. At Accuvision, Wavefront analysis is a standard part of the assessment procedure and incurs no additional cost. Until recently, diagnosis and treatment of higher order corneal irregularities was not always possible and outcomes could not be accurately predicted. This resulted in fewer patients being accepted for treatment. In such cases Accuvision now employs the Wavefront Topolyzer which has been specifically designed to measure and generate high resolution data for eyes with severe irregularities. It was developed for the most difficult cases, in which standard ACCUVISION Vision for a clearer future Wavefront measurement on its own would prove clinically ineffective. Thanks to this remarkable technology Accuvision is able to diagnose and treat more complex conditions than many other providers in the UK. On completion of our comprehensive testing procedure you will be advised of your suitability for surgery and the results which can be achieved in your particular case. Throughout your consultation our friendly staff will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have and help you to understand all aspects of our procedures. “I consulted many other laser eye specialists, but I was told that laser would not help. However, thanks to Accuvision I have managed to get near perfect sight, which is something I never expected.” JYOTI CHOUDRIE ▼ 5 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:50 Page 11 HELP US TO GIVE YOU THE BEST RESULTS Our priority is to safely deliver the very best outcome for your future vision. To help us achieve this we will need you to follow some simple guidelines for your consultation, on treatment day and following treatment. Your consultation If you have any old prescriptions for lenses or glasses (or details of any eye treatment you have had), please bring them along. These will help us to see how your eyes have altered over time, and assess how best to treat you. Contact lenses can alter the shape of your eye, affecting test results. For this reason it is very important to stop using them for a week before your consultation for soft lenses and three weeks for rigid lenses. This allows time for your eye to restore its natural shape. The examination process can temporarily blur your vision so we recommend that you avoid driving home and make alternative arrangements. Treatment day For your comfort it is best to wear loose casual clothing. Do not wear any cosmetics, deodorant, hair products or perfume on the day of your treatment as vapours and particles can interrupt the laser ▼ 6 “Only Accuvision offered me the safest vision correction treatment - the results have been fantastic!” Jamie Peacock – Leeds Rhinos and England Rugby League Captain beam, affecting results. We recommend that you avoid driving home and would suggest that you bring a friend to drive you or make alternative arrangements. After your treatment Depending on the treatment you have had you will be provided with either clear protective shields or contact lenses to protect your eyes during the healing process. You will also be prescribed eye drops to reduce discomfort and aid healing. During the healing process it is important to avoid: • • • • • • Rubbing your eyes Wearing eye make-up for 2 weeks Swimming for 1 month Using sunbeds for 1 month Activities which may result in eye injury Smoky or dusty atmospheres Full instructions will be provided at your consultation and on the day of surgery. We will also provide you with a schedule of revisits to your clinic, to check on your progress following your treatment. 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:50 Page 12 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS We want you to be as confident as we are in our technology and procedures, so here are the answers to a selection of the questions we are most commonly asked. Don’t forget that our specialists are available by phone to answer any other questions you may have, so please ask us by calling 0330 300 2020. How successful is laser vision correction at Accuvision? Our success is built upon giving our patients the very best outcome that can possibly be achieved through laser vision correction. Even though we treat many patients who have been refused by other clinics due to extreme prescriptions or eye conditions, over 99% of our patients are able to drive without glasses. At your consultation we will discuss what can be achieved in your individual case. How much does it cost? Like your eyes, every treatment plan is different. However, while higher order prescriptions are more expensive we include state-of-the art Wavefront diagnostics as a standard part of every ‘pre-op’ at no extra cost. Overall our prices are very competitive and you are guaranteed an unsurpassed level of service. Does it hurt? Laser treatment is virtually painless. However, you may experience some mild to moderate discomfort and watering of the eyes for a few hours after LASIK treatment. Do the results last? The effects of laser treatment are permanent, but your eyes may change over time. That’s why we recommend having the procedure after major eye changes have occurred in your life. Your surgeon can review the changes you have had and help you decide whether or not to undergo treatment. What happens when I get older? As we reach our mid 40's, the fine focusing mechanism of the lens does not function as well as when we were younger. As a result most of us will require reading glasses when we reach this age. There are treatments available from Accuvision which can help to relieve this condition. If my vision changes later in life, can I have repeat surgery? In most cases, an enhancement may be a solution to vision changes later in life. Our specialists will examine your eyes and determine whether this can be performed. Are there long-term side effects? Laser eye surgery has been performed for more than 20 years and no complications ACCUVISION Vision for a clearer future have been documented that have not been encountered in the first year of follow-up. Minor complications such as haziness, delayed healing and night-time glare have been reported, although these are very rare and in almost all cases can be treated. How long before I can see well? Visual rehabilitation after treatment is rapid. Most people achieve good vision the day after surgery and find that their eyes feel fairly normal 24 hours later. However, your sight will improve even further, and the very best vision could take two to three weeks. Can both eyes be corrected at the same time? Because of increased safety and predictability we are happy to treat both eyes at the same time. Will I require multiple treatments? We treat many complex prescriptions. In spite of this over 98% of cases require just a single treatment. A second enhancement (subject to medical recommendation) will be offered at no extra cost (within a year of treatment). “I am so pleased that I chose Accuvision. The whole experience was professional from the time I picked up the phone to discuss a possible appointment through to my aftercare.” CAROLINE NEWMAN ▼ 7 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:50 Page 13 ACCUVISION ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY Laser vision correction is achieved by re-shaping the cornea, using a laser to remove minute amounts of tissue. With recent advances in technology our laser procedures are safer, faster and more effective than ever before. ® Wavelight Advanced Technology Platform Where older, less technically advanced lasers produce a broad, square-shaped beam, our laser systems produce a rounded, sharply-focused profile measuring only a fraction of a millimetre across. This allows us to smoothly remove the minutest amounts of corneal tissue, with the utmost accuracy. The Wavelight ® lasers we use are the fastest lasers available in the UK today. With repetition rates of up to 500 Hz treatment times have been reduced to a few seconds, delivering a more comfortable procedure for the patient. They are especially capable for treating high myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and other complex and intensive procedures. Perfect Pulse Technology ® Ensures safe and precise work at a high speed. Every single laser pulse is completely controlled from the moment it is created to where it meets the eye. Each ultra-thin laser pulse is used to sculpt the corneal surface of the eye with the utmost precision. 3D Eye Movement Tracking Computer controlled eye-tracking allows precise application of the laser beam even if your eye moves and ensures safe, accurate removal of corneal tissue. Using such a fine laser beam at such high speed, the Allegretto Eye-Q is equipped with a synchronised 3D eye tracker to follow even fast eye movement with a response time of less than 8 milliseconds. If eye movement exceeds the safe limits of the eye tracker, the beam will momentarily stop to allow re-centring of the laser. Wavefront LASIK/Trans-Epi LASIK Instead of just correcting focussing errors, we can now take a wavefront image – literally, a 'fingerprint' of each person's optical pathway – and use the information to reduce or even eliminate higher order aberrations, improving visual acuity. This means that potentially your vision could be improved beyond that which you have previously achieved with glasses or lenses. Applicable to both LASIK and TransEpi LASIK procedures, Wavefront allows for optimal, eye specific correction that was previously unattainable. It can also provide improved vision in all lighting conditions. 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:51 Page 14 LASIK AND ‘ALL LASER’ PROCEDURES Wavefront diagnostics are part of any Accuvision pre-op assessment, providing exacting data that is used with other readings to offer the very best LASIK and Trans-Epithelial Surface Treatment – ‘all laser’ vision correction. LASIK The LASIK procedure is performed using topical anaesthetic (eye drops) on an outpatient basis. It is simple, fast and highly predictable, performed in an appropriate surgical environment approved by the Care Quality Commission. An automated device is used to create a very thin flap on the corneal surface which is folded back to allow the excimer laser to reshape the cornea. LASIK causes minimal discomfort and provides rapid recovery times. Incidence of postoperative complication is extremely low. 1 Anaesthetic drops are applied to the eye 2 A protective flap of corneal tissue is created and gently lifted to reveal the inner corneal layer 3 The inner corneal layer is reshaped with the precision excimer laser beam ACCUVISION Vision for a clearer future 4 The corneal flap is carefully replaced and begins to heal immediately Some patients may experience slight irritation and light sensitivity after the procedure but these effects usually last a few hours. Many patients notice improved vision immediately after surgery, although it usually takes a few days for the full benefit to be appreciated. ‘All Laser’ Trans-Epithelial Surface Treatment This ‘no-touch’ procedure is an advanced form of surface laser treatment and is performed in two stages. Firstly, the laser is used to remove the corneal surface layer (epithelium) with pinpoint accuracy and regularity, thereby minimising possible stromal tissue loss. Secondly, the laser is programmed to remove exactly the right amount of corneal stromal tissue to optimise your visual outcome. Following treatment a bandage contact lens is placed over the cornea for a few days as the epithelial layer heals. As no alcohol, mechanical device or suction is used during the laser eye correction treatment, the healing times compared with normal surface treatments are much faster and less painful. It also avoids any flap complications and is less invasive, therefore more appropriate for thinner corneas. “I went to 4 different places before choosing Accuvision. I chose them as they made me feel at ease, seemed honest, were not pushy, and seemed to have greater experience of dealing successfully with poorer prescriptions like mine. They were also competitively priced.” JAMES BELLAMY ▼ 9 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:51 Page 15 WAVEFRONT AND BEYOND Enhanced procedures now allow the benefits of laser vision correction to be enjoyed by patients previously considered untreatable. Accuvision now treat a wider range of patients and prescriptions than any other UK clinic. Wavefront Optimised LASIK Some laser technologies induce aberrations (irregularities) on the corneal shape profile during treatment. The wavelight laser platform at Accuvision uses special calculations (nomograms) to prevent these aberrations and so helps to maintain better visual quality. Topography Guided LASIK A corneal topographer is an instrument that measures the corneal shape and contour. Topography guided LASIK uses the resulting corneal contour map to guide the laser pattern, thereby correcting distortions on the cornea. The Wavelight Allegretto Eye-Q laser uses high resolution data to produce much larger, more uniform treatment zones, vastly improving night vision. It also enables treatment for patients with large pupils with utmost efficacy. This is especially useful for patients with corneal abnormalities and in the rare case that a patient requires remedial procedures after previous standard LASIK treatment. Customised Guided Wavefront High resolution wavefront data maps can also be incorporated into the custom treatment plan to correct for specific 'higher order aberrations'. Again the emphasis is on improving visual quality beyond standard treatment. The table opposite further summarises these options. We will advise you as to the most appropriate treatment strategy for your individual case. 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:51 Page 16 LASER TREATMENT OPTIONS AT A GLANCE This brief summary offers an overview of the range of AccuWaveTM laser vision correction treatments provided by Accuvision. Our wealth of experience and expertise allows us to offer additional bespoke treatments and specialised surgical solutions for a wide range of vision and eye health conditions. Reading Vision Correction As the lens inside the eye hardens through age, we lose the ability to focus our vision for close activities such as reading, a condition known as presbyopia. If suitable, you may choose to undergo a ‘Monovision’ procedure. This involves laser correction of your dominant eye for distance vision, while the other is corrected for near vision without spectacles. Monovision offers the best chance of reduced dependence on spectacles for most situations. “It is one of the best decisions I have made. I know from my own experience that whether to undergo an operation is a very difficult decision to make, but I am so pleased that I decided to go ahead.” NICK DRIES ▼ 12 CK (Conductive Keratoplasty) This has now been superseded by our Monovision reading restoration treatment. Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL’s) and Intra Ocular Lenses (IOL’S) Similar to a small contact lens, the implantable contact lens is placed inside the eye, in front of the natural lens, correcting severe cases of short sight, long sight and astigmatism. Intra Ocular lenses are used as a replacement to the natural lens in the eye to improve your vision. Cataract Treatment Cataract surgery has been performed for many years and is a standard procedure. It restores clear sight by the replacement of the clouded natural lens in the eye, significantly improving the quality of vision. Keratoconus Treatment Keratoconus is usually caused by thinning of the cornea and results in it ‘bulging forward’ causing vision distortion. As this condition develops, it may not be easily correctable with contact lenses or glasses. Intacs can be inserted into the periphery of the cornea to help flatten the surface and reduce the optical defect. Corneal Collagen Cross-linking (C3R) Corneal Collagen Cross-linking with Riboflavin (C3R) is a new treatment that increases the stiffness and rigidity of the cornea and stabilises Keratoconus. The C3R treatment has been shown to increase the diameter of the collagen fibres in the cornea and enhance the cross-linking of the fibres. This has a stabilising effect on progressive Keratoconus and reduces the visual impairment associated with it. Once stabilised by C3R the eye can be considered for further treatment. AccuwaveTM Topography Guided Advanced Custom Ablation In addition to simple ‘cross-linking’ Accuvision can now offer selected patients combined corneal collagen cross-linking with laser re-shaping. Please call us on 0845 000 2020 for more information and a copy of our keratoconus booklet. NeuroVision treatment for ‘Lazy Eye’ (Amblyopia) This is a clinically proven, non-surgical and risk-free treatment for Amblyopia (Lazy Eye), a condition in which there is loss of best corrected spectacle vision in one or both eyes. The eye appears healthy, but vision is poor. It is the only existing treatment for adults having ‘Lazy Eye’ which is approved in the USA and Europe. 09.0062 Accuvision Brochure CVD_09.0062 Accuvision Brochure 2009 08/08/2011 10:51 Page 18 TAKE THE NEXT STEP TOWARDS CLEARER VISION Corrective surgery from Accuvision is safe, fast and effective.
