CalArts recently launched a number of significant
initiatives designed to keep the Institute on the
leading edge of higher education in the arts.
Tech­nology’s role at CalArts—and in the arts generally—continues to evolve. CalArts now offers a selection of computer science, engineering and design
courses. In Fall 2012, with support from the National
Science Foundation, CalArts launched an innovative
arts curriculum for teaching computer science skills
to students outside science and technology fields.
CalArts is also partnering with Coursera, the educational technology venture offering massive open
online courses (moocs). The Institute is offering two
courses in 2013 and one in early 2014: an introduction to programming for digital artists, a course on
site-specific dance choreography and performance,
and an art history class. Through Coursera, we are
making a selection of our world-class educators
and curriculum available to students everywhere
at no cost.
A new, interdisciplinary, digital arts minor for undergraduate artists and performers was launched
in Fall 2013. Mobilizing expertise from CalArts’ six
schools, the curriculum incorporates computer programming, web design, video editing, digital fabrication and digital sound production.
In a collaboration with nyu, CalArts faculty and
graduate students are creating a sonic map to visualize the acoustic energy of cities on digital maps.
And the School of Film/Video at CalArts—recently
ranked by The Hollywood Reporter as the fifth best
film school in the U.S.—was one of only five film
schools chosen to explore how Google Glass—the
wearable computer that resembles a pair of glasses—can be used to produce films.
Around the world, CalArts has a growing presence,
and international programs are an Institute priority.
In January 2013, 20 upper-level undergraduate students from Hongik University—a highly-regarded visual/design school in Seoul, South Korea—arrived in
California for the first Intensive Winter Program at
CalArts. The selected students participated in a specially-designed motion graphics workshop, bringing
a new source of revenue to CalArts. This initiative is
expected to grow in the future.
We are continuing to see a steep rise in applications
from talented students across the globe. The number
of CalArts students from China has increased from
eight in 2011 to 47 in 2013. At least one of these students is already an international star. Momo Wang,
an mfa student in the Program in Experimental
Animation, is a successful entrepreneur who has
reached Internet celebrity status in China thanks to
an illustrated character that she created named Tuzki. Eight books of her work have been published in
Asia. She spent two years working for Turner Broadcasting System in Hong Kong developing Tuzki into
a brand that’s popular throughout Asia and other
parts of the world. Wang has become so popular that
she’s been photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Gap
ads in China.
The Institute’s most recent educational facility is the
new building for the School of Art, featuring exhibition and instructional space as well as additional
undergraduate artists’ studios. In May 2014, Christie’s will hold a special auction in New York to raise
funds for the building—including naming opportunities—and scholarships. The auction will also recognize CalArts and its esteemed visual arts alumni
and will honor artist and former faculty member
John Baldessari.
Whether through the latest technology or other new
methods of production or creative thinking, CalArts
will continue to lead in arts experimentation. Sincere thanks to each and every donor for gifts made
