4
Feature: Infant Seat with
Rebound Bar (cont.)
• Anti-Rebound Bar
– Why? In severe crashes, the rebound at the end
could result in baby hitting the vehicle seatback.
Some infant car seats have an anti-rebound bar on
the base to minimize the chances that baby will pop
up that far in a crash.
– The anti-rebound bar isn't required for the car seat to
be safe.
• Many infant car seats have a very deep shell that contains
the baby during rebound and protects against hitting the
vehicle seat.

Feature: Low Birth Weight
Foam/Inserts

provide improved fit with small babies.

both rear and forward facing.
• Always check the manuals and follow limits.

10
Feature: Shock Absorber
• On a booster seat:
Absorbs the energy
during a crash.
• Results in a visible cue
that it must be replaced
(it deforms).
• It can be compared to a
kind of crumple zone for
children’s car seats.

11
Feature: Boosters and
LATCH
• Always read the owner’s manuals to see of a restraint
can be secured with the lower anchors when used as a
booster seat.
• Possible benefit: Locks the booster seat into place using
your vehicle’s lower anchorage system
to provide additional booster seat
stability in a collision

17
Lock Offs
• They serve the pre-crash locking system for the child seat.
• Provided on some seats to make installation more convenient.
• By using the lock-off, the caregiver does not need to identify what
type of latch plate or retractor is in their vehicle.
• There is wide variation in the designs and correct uses of
the built in lock-offs on the current market.
• Each manufacturer, and even different models from the same
manufacturer, can have a different style and instruction for use of
the built-in lock-offs.
• Some child seats direct you to use one lock-off and others to use
two.
• Reading the instructions is critical to correct installation.
