Disney’s Frozen, an animated big-screen comedy
adventure in theaters November 27, 2013, tells the
story of fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen
Bell) who sets off on an epic journey—teaming
up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice
of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—
to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel),
whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of
Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everestlike conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious
snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna
and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save
the kingdom.
“In creating Anna and Elsa, we were inspired by
the characters and themes from Hans Christian
Andersen’s classic ‘The Snow Queen,’” says Chris
Buck, Director.

According to Chris, Walt Disney had considered
an animated version of Andersen’s story, but
never developed a version or full-fledged
characters he was happy with. During the
late 90s, animators continued to explore the
idea between work on other film projects. But

Andersen’s complex and somewhat dark story
was challenging to translate to screen. Who was
the heroine? The villain? What was the underlying
theme? It wasn’t until 2008, when Chris pitched
several new approaches, that the characters and
story began to evolve. A major change was the
creation of equally compelling sisters whose
differences pull them apart, but who discover
the power of family is the strongest of all.
Not only did the characters have very different
personalities, they had to look and move
differently yet still look like sisters.
“Elsa is a very complex character,” explains
Jennifer Lee, Director. “She makes her decisions
based on fear. When a person does that, it shapes
who they are. Once we found that through line
for Elsa, she became easier for us to understand
and bring to life.”
“Elsa has a cool, elegant beauty. We gave her a
bit of angularity in her face and body, and her
movements are very controlled, because she’s
repressing her emotions,” Jennifer says. “There’s
a deep well of love inside Elsa, but she’s
terrified of losing control. The audience
has to feel both of these things
simultaneously. Elsa was quite
difficult to animate because her
movements and expressions are
so subtle and complex.”
“Anna is one of those people where what you see is what you
get,” Chris adds. “She doesn’t hide anything from anyone; she’s
accessible, warm and funny. We don’t often see a funny female
heroine. Her styling is rounder, softer, more natural and her
movements are more vivacious. Compared to her sister, whom
she adores and admires, Anna believes she’s rather ordinary,
which of course, she’s not.”
While each sister has a very different personal journey to make
in the film, love is the compelling force behind them both.
“Elsa is so fear-controlled, that she’s in constant battle with
herself. The big question is whether she will free herself to
love and be loved,” Chris explains. “It was challenging to get
Elsa’s love across. She’s the older sister, so she has this need to
protect Anna by pulling away, but in doing that, she hurts the
one person she cares most about.”
vacation

“Anna’s journey was a bit easier to convey,” Chris continues.
“She’s young and naïve so she jumps the first time someone
offers her the affection she craves. Her flaw is not quite
understanding what love is. We’re all a bit like her when we’re
young. It takes time to learn what it really means to love
someone. It makes Anna easy to relate to.”
“I always remember the day when we were struggling a bit
with the ending,” Chris recalls. “The climactic moment is an
extraordinary experience for me personally. We don’t often see
stories about the love between sisters. I think Elsa and Anna’s
story is going to really resonate with
audiences. Frozen is all about the
journeys we make in life. About being
free to love and to find our own
powers,” Chris concludes.

emember seeing that special package with
your name on it under the tree? You could
hardly wait to open it. Then—yes! There
she was, smiling up at you. The doll you had been
hoping and waiting for.
Creating beautiful dolls is a matter of joy and pride for the
designers at Disney Store. But they have an even bigger
challenge according to Sang Plumlee, Design Manager for Toys.
“Our dolls must capture the personalities and emotions of film
characters kids know and love,” she says. “Every choice we
make has to work together to do that.”
This year, to celebrate Disney’s Frozen, Disney Store designers
were challenged to create two very different dolls.
“Anna is warm, cute and a little quirky, but also quite brave. Elsa
is more poised and cool,” Sang points out. “She’s a very strong
and complex character. We had to be very careful to capture
that complexity.”
Filmmakers have dialogue, music, movement and light to
convey emotion, personality and tell a story. “For dolls, we work
with texture, sculpted expression, body shape and color,” Sang
explains. “Getting all those elements just right is critical.”
For instance, the reflective
colors of snow and ice are so
prevalent in Frozen, but it is
not easy to capture that sheen
on fabric. “Luckily we had
wonderful help from the
filmmakers. Michael Giaimo, the
Art Director for Frozen, gave us
amazing direction about how to
translate the film palette to the
dolls and other toys.”
“I collect dolls myself,” Sang
says. “I appreciate the way
details are thought through

so that the character’s personality is captured. In creating the
Frozen dolls, we were led by the relationship between the two
sisters. They are very different in some ways, but they both
have strong personalities. It was exciting to work with them.”
The same kind of attention to detail went into the construction
and decoration of the Arendelle castle playset. “We recreated
the furnishings, rugs and wallpaper based on what’s in the film,”
Sang says. The playset includes a special feature that makes
Anna and Hans dance across the ballroom floor. There is also
a playset of Kristoff’s sleigh, complete with Sven, the frisky
reindeer, and figures of Kristoff, Anna and Olaf.
The dolls and playsets aren’t the only Frozen treats shoppers
can tuck under the tree. Girls can reenact the story while dressed
as Anna and Elsa in beautifully detailed role-play costumes. Olaf,
the friendly and outgoing snowman, is ready for hugs as an
adorable, musical plush singing his show-stopping song.

rom the lights on your tree
to the savory sweetness of
gingerbread, every holiday
tradition we love has a story
behind it. And who better to tell them
than the master storytellers of Disney.
Every year, right after the Thanksgiving
turkey is a memory, the storytellers at Walt
Disney World® Resort offer two unique tours
that take Guests behind the scenes to enjoy
the sights, stories and lights of the holiday
season. And, as a Disney Visa Cardmember,
you can enjoy 20% off the non-discounted

these tours, to see Disney holiday magic in a
way you never have before.4
“Yuletide Fantasy uses the pavilions of World
Showcase in Epcot® as a ‘stage’ for exploring
the history of holiday traditions we all love,”
says Mark Matheis, Facilitator, Walt Disney
World® Resort. What inspired people to cut
down pine trees and decorate them? Why is
red a traditional Christmas color? Who made
the first blown-glass ornaments?
“We talk about all the holidays people
celebrate at this time of year,” Mark says.
“During the tour we invite Guests to share
their own memories and traditions, so it’s a
very interactive experience.”
From Epcot®, the tour proceeds to Disney’s
Grand Floridian Resort & Spa to learn how
the Victorian era laid the foundations for
Christmas as we know it today. Then, it’s on
to Magic Kingdom® Park. “That’s where the
nostalgia really kicks in for me,” Mark admits.
Mark’s favorite part of the
tour is a trip behind the
scenes to the Holiday Service
Department. “It’s where our
‘elves’ work,” he explains.
“There are at least two dozen
Cast Members whose full-time
job is building, repairing and
creating holiday decorations.
Designing and building new
decorations can take up to two and a half
years. Everything is stored in a 50,000square-foot warehouse, which Guests get a
very unusual chance to visit. Usually, even
Cast Members can’t go into the warehouse
without clearance,” Mark says. “To me, this is
the highlight of the tour. I love it because I get
to satisfy my own curiosity. It’s a true Disney
insider moment.”
Mark’s experience guiding the daytime Yuletide
Fantasy gave him the inspiration for Holiday
D-Lights, which debuted in 2009.
“When I was guiding Yuletide Fantasy, I would
hear Guests say ‘oh, I’d love to see this at
night.’” So Mark pitched the idea of a tour that
would take Guests to all three of the major
lighting events at the Parks within Walt Disney
World® Resort. “But the events occur almost
simultaneously at three different Parks, and
no one thought we could get Guests from one
place to another in time,” Mark recalls.
“So a colleague and I test-drove the route. We
proved that if we had backstage access and
bus clearance, we could make it work.”
Holiday D-Lights starts with an all-you-caneat meal, then a visit with the Decorating
Support team. As the sun sets, Guests
head to Magic Kingdom® Park for Castle
Dreamlights, followed by a visit to Disney’s
Hollywood Studios® to watch the Osborne
Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. The tour
culminates with VIP seating for the Candlelight
Processional at the American Pavilion at
World Showcase in Epcot®. “The Candlelight
Processional is one of the longest running
Disney holiday traditions,” Mark says, “so it’s
appropriate that we end
the tour with it.”
Does Mark have tips
to share? “Make your
reservations early. Wear
layers. And don’t eat
before Holiday D-Lights,”
he says with a chuckle.
“Oh—and one more thing.
Prepare to be awed.”

The colors are bright. The
characters are friendly,
playful and sweet.
The song is simple,
unforgettable…and as
hopeful as a child’s smile.
Since it was created for the
1964 New York World’s Fair and
subsequently opened at the
Disneyland® Resort in 1966, the
“it’s a small world” attraction has
delighted and inspired millions with its whimsical
charm and positive message.
Now, with the introduction of It’s a Small World
dolls at Disney Store, Guests who have loved the
attraction since the first time they rode it can share
their memories with the people in their world.
“The attraction has been my personal favorite
since the first time I experienced it at age 4,” says
Nomi Vela, Global Design Director for Disney
Store. “When I was a kid, I wanted one of those
dolls more than anything, so I was very passionate
when I pitched the idea to our toy team. Now I’ve
actually had the privilege of helping make my
personal dream come true. It’s been an amazing
experience.”
The dolls are translated directly from the
sweet-faced figures and whimsical animals in
the attraction. “We scaled the dolls so that they
would appeal to a child—or to the child inside
us all,” Nomi says. This year, the line debuts with
seven dolls representing Hawai‘i, the Netherlands,
France, Kenya, Japan, England and India, and four
animal plush—a hippo, poodle, panda and jaguar.
Each doll and plush sings “it’s a small world” in its
own language and in English. Team member Sang
Plumlee, Design Manager for Toys, worked with
Disney character voices, and actually recruited
and recorded kids from each of the countries who
could sing the song in their own language and in
English.
The team, which also included Sulam Kang,
Designer, and Steve Thompson, Designer, rode the

attraction over and over to feel the experience and
get an idea about how to bring it into the stores.
“We collaborated closely with the folks at Disney
Theme Parks,” Nomi says. “Doug Oglesby, Director
of Strategy, brainstormed with us about how to
bring the dolls to life. We were allowed access
behind the scenes, where we could get up close,
touch the clothing and see all the details of the
fabrics and jewelry. The team loved it!”
The team also spent hours in the Walt Disney
Imagineering Art Library, poring over costume
sketches by Imagineering artist Alice Davis, who
designed the original doll costuming for the
attraction. “We wanted to duplicate the fabric
patterns, but obviously we would never find those
same fabrics today, so we had new ones printed.
For the Japanese doll, we couldn’t find any record
of the pattern, so we took pictures of the character
and recreated the pattern from them,” Nomi
explains. The team took the same kind of care with
shoes, accessories and hair.
“I’m so proud of these dolls, if you create
something from a personal place then it becomes
universal! People sense and share your passion,”
Nomi says. “I love the message—we’re all the
same—it’s such a beautiful gift of hope and caring.”

“I remember one time when we were riding the
attraction, I overheard a grandmother telling
her granddaughter about the first time she had
taken her daughter on ‘it’s a small world’ and how
glad she was to share the experience with her
granddaughter,” Nomi says. “I like to think that
someday that little girl will be a grandmother,
handing down an It’s a Small World doll and telling
her grandchild ‘I remember when I went on that
ride with my grandmother and she brought me
this doll.’”

ou know what it takes to put the holiday
lights up on your home. Getting them
from a dusty box in the garage…
untangling those strands you were
sure you packed away so neatly last year…climbing up and
down the ladder. And then, the moment when you plug them
in, stand back and listen to the kids say “Wow!”
Now imagine doing the same thing for “it’s a small world”
Holiday. That’s been the job of Joe Peters, Technical Director,
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment, since
1997, when “it’s a small world” Holiday debuted.
“‘it’s a small world’ was the first Disneyland® Park attraction
to be specially dressed in holiday garb,” Joe says. “We had
never decorated an entire attraction before. And it was so
successful it became the inspiration for everything we do at
the Disneyland® Resort for the holidays today.”
“Not only was the challenge entirely new to us in 1997, the
decision to do it was made just a few months before the
holiday season. We had to design it, figure out how to do it
logistically and then get in, decorate, get out, open and take
it out again. It was incredibly complex.”
After all, this is not your usual house-size façade. “Every one
of the 60,000 lights on the façade of ‘it’s a small world’ has
a reason for being where it is,” Joe points out. “We contour
every architectural feature…every triangle, circle and square.”
Every tree, shrub and topiary is also illuminated in the
twinkling splendor of more than 250,000 lights.
And that’s just the exterior. Inside, the world’s children are
dressed for the holidays, and new sets and props are installed,
along with thousands of feet of garland. As Guests glide
through the tunnel, they’re regaled with a medley of “Jingle
Bells,” “Deck the Halls” and “it’s a small world,” and may even
catch the scent of pine and cinnamon. The “grand finale”
never fails to draw

Toy Shop where

“We begin working in January for the next season,” Joe says.
“Everything has to be inspected and repaired, replaced, rebuilt or
repainted. In fact, we replace the bulbs every year because the
old ones fade from exposure to sunlight.” New touches are also
added. This year, the clock show will feature projections with a
3D feeling. “We’ve completely changed the clock show from top
to bottom with new artwork, videos and even new projectors,”
Joe reveals. “It’s really cool!” The actual installation takes about
seven weeks, with teams working all day and all night until the
last light is hung. Then it’s time for the show to begin.
Every evening around 5:15, the lights in the “it’s a small world”
mall dim. Then suddenly, the façade bursts into brilliant life as
projected holiday images dance and march to the rhythms of
a lively Christmas song medley.
This year, the “it’s a small world” Holiday transformation
lights up in early November.8 “I’ve been with this project since
day one,” Joe says. “And every year on the opening day, I’m
standing out there in the crowd waiting for the lights to come
up and listening to Guests react. I never get tired of seeing that
beautiful façade transform. It’s magical.”

wonder as magical snow falls softly on Main Street, U.S.A., and
candlelight and song fill the air at Epcot®. It’s a holiday night
at Walt Disney World® Resort and the Disneyland® Resort.
During the holidays, Disney Theme Parks are a festival for
the eyes by day. When the sun goes down, they become a
wonderland so shining and bright they would put a twinkle in
Santa’s eyes.
What does it take to make the transformation? A veritable
Santa’s Workshop of Disney “elves” and twelve months of
planning, designing, repairing, building and creating. Every
year, designers, artists, musicians, directors, costumers, crafts
people and technicians begin working as early as January to
make sure the next holiday season is even more spectacular
than the last.
At Walt Disney World® Resort they’re preparing for Mickey’s
Very Merry Christmas Party, the “Holiday Wishes” fireworks
show and “Castle Dream Lights on Cinderella Castle” at Magic

Candelight Processional at Epcot®.
“
Their counterparts across the country at the Disneyland®
Resort are busily working on the “Believe…In Holiday Magic”
Fireworks show at Disneyland® Park and World of Color—
Winter Dreams at Disney California Adventure® Park.
“To create a fireworks show, we begin with music,” says Brad
Cicotti, Principal Fireworks Specialist and Tech Designer for
Walt Disney World® Parks and Resorts. “Once that’s finalized,
we work with the show director to decide what color and type
of firework matches the emotion of the music. For instance,
if the music is building to a crescendo, we might choose
fireworks that show a tail as they rise and then strobe when
they explode. Disney Theme Parks are among the world’s
largest users of fireworks, and we are on a constant worldwide
search for new types to incorporate into our shows.”
From there, it can take up to 80 hours to cue the music and
fireworks on the computer, according to Brad. “‘Holiday
Wishes’ uses about 200 different kinds of fireworks and has
about 1,000 separate cues,” he says.
For “Believe…In Holiday Magic”, at Disneyland® Park the creative
process is similar. Although the shows are different, they share
the same goal. “Ultimately on both coasts we’re telling a holiday
story by painting the sky with light and color,” Brad says.
The same goes for the nighttime transformations of Sleeping
Beauty Castle, and Cinderella Castle which have been awing

In fact, installation takes over six weeks.”
“For Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland® Park, we decided
to tell a story about something you don’t get to see much in
Southern California—snow,” says John Addis, Senior Show
Director. “So we added snowcaps to the castle, embedded
around 215,000 lights in them and devised an optical illusion so
it looks as if snow is falling, settling and drifting.” To add to the

“The snowfall on Main Street gives parents a way to share

wanted to tell a story about winter dreams and where they
can take us.”
This year, the show is hosted by Olaf, the snowman from the
upcoming Disney animated feature Frozen, combines new
animation with classic winter scenes from beloved Disney
films. “One of our biggest challenges was deciding what to
showcase,” Steve says.
“We also wanted to be very inclusive with this show,” Steve
adds. “We asked Guests to send in winter greeting cards that
they designed, and we then incorporated those visuals into
the actual show. We even invited them to be in a virtual honor
choir via the internet, and that music has also been woven
into the production. The participation really added a lot to the
show, and took it in a new direction. Our Guests are actually
sharing their holiday winter dreams with us.”
Add a stirring new musical score and 1,000 new lighting
effects, and you have a memorable holiday experience.
“‘Winter Dreams’ is filled with wonderful storytelling,” Steve
says. “It’s that special ‘kiss goodnight’ that brings your day at
Disney California Adventure® Park to the perfect close.”

Taking a
Step in Time
I
n 1964, when audiences watched the
“practically perfect” English nanny,
Mary Poppins, played by Julie Andrews,
drift down from the sky over London
and land neatly and precisely on the Banks’ family
doorstep, they knew they were experiencing a
“practically perfect” film.
Saving Mr. Banks
In theaters
December 20, 2013
Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, in theaters December 20,
2013, celebrates the story behind the story of Disney’s
beloved classic Mary Poppins—from the real-life events
that inspired the characters created by P.L. Travers,
played by Emma Thompson, to how the film came to
be and the humor and drama that resulted from the
author’s filmmaking partnership with Walt Disney, played
by two-time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks.
To help capture the real-life people, the era and the
places seen in the film, the studio filmmakers turned
to Walt Disney Archives.
“The Studio asked us to read the script and determine
what materials in the Archives could be of assistance
to the filmmakers,” recalls Steven Vagnini, Archivist,
Walt Disney Archives. But that was just the beginning.
Over the next months, the actors came to Archives
to study footage of the characters and learn more
about their relationships. “We shared rarely seen
footage of Walt’s 1963 interview with Fletcher Markle
of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation,” Steven
recalls. “In it, you see Walt the man, not necessarily
the way we saw him on the weekly television series,
but sharing his creative philosophy using natural
mannerisms.”
One of Steven’s favorite moments was when actor
Jason Schwartzman, who portrays songwritercomposer Richard Sherman, asked if there was closeup film footage of Richard’s fingers hitting the piano
keys. “D23 had recently filmed a close-up of Richard’s

from the Doc
fingers playing ‘The Orange Bird Song’ on Walt’s
piano—so we were able to fulfill Jason’s request.”
The Archives also played a critical role in the
design of the film sets, including Walt’s formal
office and his working office. “The art directors
photographed everything and even measured the
furniture,” Steven says.
“We were on call to answer questions from the
filmmakers about every aspect of the Studio and
Disneyland® in that era down to what soft drinks
were available at the Park. Sometimes we knew the
answers right away, sometimes we had to do quite a
bit of research.”
Archivists sourced more than 500 photographs for
the filmmakers and the staff also digitized more than
120 pieces of original development artwork from
the film, including storyboard sketches, concept
paintings and costume designs, as well as 150 pieces
of ephemera, such as postcards, souvenir guides
and merchandise catalogs from Disneyland® Park in
the early 1960s. “We were even able to share eraappropriate materials from the Studio for replication,
including letterhead, furniture pieces and hallway
signage,” Steven says.
All those details help to create an authentic sense
of time and place that grounds the film in real-life
history. “Saving Mr. Banks is a prime example of how
valuable our company’s history is—that films and
histories from decades ago can be celebrated and
re-imagined in the 21st century,” Steven says.
What could be worse for a child’s
toy than to be broken on Christmas
Eve? No worries. Doc McStuffins
is on hand, with her doctor bag,
Big Book of Boo Boos and plenty of cuddles.
This holiday season, Doc travels to the North
Pole to fix a broken toy in a new 22-minute special, “A Very
McStuffins Christmas,” featuring two new songs and guest
voice performances by Arrested Development’s Tony Hale as
Tobias the elf and Jeffrey Tambor as Santa.
“I’m excited to tell a longer story about Doc,” says Chris Nee,
creator and executive producer of the highly popular Disney
Junior show, which is now in its second season. “We looked at
all the possibilities of what Doc could do during the holidays,
and it just made sense to send her where the master of all
toy makers lives.” In the special, Doc fixes a broken toy meant
for her brother Donny and helps Santa deliver it in time for
Christmas morning.
Nee, a veteran children’s television writer, was inspired to
create “Doc McStuffins” after becoming a mother. “My son
has asthma,” she explains, “so we’ve spent a lot of time in
doctors’ offices. As a parent, I wanted to alleviate some of
the anxiety he felt when going to the doctor. I think a lot of
parents can empathize with that.”
“There are a lot of great shows that address kids’
concerns about making friends or going to school, but
no one had done that for going to the doctor. I had this
moment when I realized ‘this is what I do…I write kids’
television shows.’ It became a personal mission.”
By translating medical issues to the world of toys, Chris and
her team make them non-threatening and fun. A toy’s case of
Broken-String-Itis is cute—not scary. The charming, humorfilled stories allow kids to make the connection to their lives,
but can also be interpreted into the fun toy world that comes
to life.
“I think kids want strong stories and strong characters like
Doc,” Chris says. “I also believe television should use its power
to show young people the places they can go, so I wanted to
create a female character who is smart, capable and a leader.
It’s one of the reasons we made Doc’s mom a doctor, too.”
“The response to Doc McStuffins has been amazing,” Chris
says. “When the show first went on the air, a group of female
African-American doctors were inspired to start the Artemis
Medical Society, which is involved in mentoring AfricanAmerican women who want to work in medical fields. It feels
wonderful to know that the choices we made when we first
started developing the show could lead to something with
the potential to impact so many lives.”
We are sure that Doc will inspire not only children
and adults with her new special, but maybe a few
elves too. To delight your little doc, head to Disney
Store with your Cardmember savings of 10% on
select merchandise purchases of $50 or more to
pick up your favorite Doc McStuffins plush, PJs
or even the role-play costume and doctor’s bag.5
Then cuddle up to share the fun, laughter and love
of “A Very McStuffins Christmas,” premiering on
Sunday, December 1, 2013, on Disney Junior.
