Whether you choose a date for sentimental reasons such as the day the two of you first met, or whether the date is chosen for practical reasons, keep in mind that you’ll need six to eight months to plan a formal wedding. A small, intimate gathering can take about three months to organize. June is still the most popular month to be married in, followed closely by August, July, May and December. Discuss honeymoon plans with your fiancé and be mindful of the time of year your favorite resort spot will be “in season.” Consider also the time of year most convenient for you and your fiancé to be away from school or work. THE DAY Though Saturday is the most popular day of the week, a wedding may take place any day accepted by religious custom. Friday evenings are also becoming popular and are an advantage for a “long weekend” honeymoon. all eyes on the bride Look simply radiant for your wedding day. Schedule a free makeover. If the evening wedding is formal, however, it is strictly so, and the entire wedding party must be in formal dress. Six o’clock is the dividing hour for the afternoon and evening ceremonies. Morning weddings are favored at high noon or half-past twelve. Because of customs of some churches, nine and ten o’clock ceremonies are equally desirous. The afternoon wedding at four or four-thirty is popular, although many are held as early as three or three-thirty. Evening weddings are at eight or eight-thirty and in some areas of the country, as early as six and as late as nine. THE HOUR Once you have an approximate time of year for your wedding in mind, check with your clergyman. Some religions discourage marriages on certain days. You may find your favorite church or synagogue already booked. Discuss the conflict with your clergyman. Perhaps you can be married at a different time of day than you originally planned (in the morning or evening, for example). Check with the person (banquet manager, caterer) who handles receptions at your preferred site to see what dates are free. Only you and your fiancé can decide if you would rather choose a different date if a particular site is unavailable, or if you prefer to stick with your original date and investigate other places and services. The availability of the hall you select, the church where the ceremony will be performed, and the attendants you’d like in your wedding party, must be determined before the date can be considered “set.” For More Information About Advertising Contact: Shireé Cooper 205-602-9590 www.alabamabride.com 7 Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:57 PM Page 8 8 Montgomery Bridal Directory Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:57 PM Page 9 A Kiss. If your families don’t know each other, arrange a meeting as soon as possible. Generally the bride’s parents are responsible for the announcement, either by sending a detailed release to the newspapers, or at a party, or both. An engagement party is an ideal way of telling relatives and friends. If there is to be no engagement party, write or telephone relatives and friends before your announcement is released. Check local and hometown requirements in advance and announce within one year of your engagement. INVITATIONS The bride’s family determines the number of guests. The groom and his family must furnish the bride their invitation list as early as possible, so that the bride may combine it with her list and remove any duplicates. Wedding invitations are sent out approximately four weeks prior to the wedding. Informal wedding invitations should be short, personal notes, telegrams, or telephone calls. If an engagement is broken, all gifts should be returned, except perishable ones. WEDDING ARRANGING THE WEDDING No bride should make plans for a formal wedding unless her groom accepts all it entails. If your wedding is to be an elaborate formal affair, professional management should be retained if possible. For either a formal or informal wedding, there is no substitute for a professional. It is very necessary that you have made certain decisions and arrangements before consulting any of the professional firms listed in this publication for details. You should know your budget, the style of your wedding, date, time, location, number of guests, attendants and have fabric swatches for coordinating the color scheme. WEDDING EXPENSES—Who Pays for What The bride’s family is entirely responsible for the wedding ceremony. The groom’s family may offer to share in the cost of the reception, and the bride’s family may accept, if they wish. Wedding costs, by tradition, are divided as follows: 12 Montgomery Bridal Directory Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:57 PM Page 11 The Bride (or family) Pays for: Invitations and Announcements The Bridal Outfit and Trousseau Bridal Photographs All costs of the Reception Flowers for the Church, Attendants and Reception Music at the Church and Reception Sexton, Organist and Choir Fees All rented equipment for large Weddings and Receptions A Limousine for the Bride and Cars for Transportation Groom‘s Wedding Ring Groom’s Gift Gifts for the Bride’s Attendants Lodging (if necessary) for out-of-town Bridesmaids Bride’s Personal Stationery The Groom (or family) Pays for: ‘ Bride’s Engagement and Wedding Rings Marriage License Clergyman’s Fee Bride’s Flowers Boutonnieres, Gloves, Ties for Men of Wedding Party Wedding Gift for the Bride Complete Wedding Trip Gifts for Best Man and Ushers Lodging (if necessary) for out-of-town Ushers OPTIONAL EXPENSES • Bride’s bouquet, usually gift of the groom, may be purchased by the bride’s family. • Corsages for mothers and grandmothers are usually provided by the groom, may be purchased by bride for her own mother and grand-mother. • Bachelor dinner is usually given by groom or family, but may be given by bride’s family or friends. • Rehearsal dinner is usually given by groom or family, but may be given by bride’s family or relatives. • Attendants’ dresses are usually bought by each girl, but the bride may provide them, if she wishes. THE REHEARSAL All weddings with more than two attendants must be rehearsed before the event and at the convenience of the clergyman. Have child attendants there. Preferably the female child can practice walking in her wedding attire and throwing the flowers. The male child should practice with his pillow. Often the rehearsal is held in the evening, preceded or followed by a dinner for the bridal party. If you have not presented gifts to the members of your wedding party, they may be given at this time. www.alabamabride.com 13 Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:58 PM Page 12 Visit www.AlabamaBride.com The Internet’s Most Comprehensive Wedding Website! T The Bridal Registry The Bridal Registry is the most convenient means to help your friends and relatives choose gifts that you really want. It is a free service offered to give you the opportunity to list the items you really want and need. More couples than ever before are registering their gift selections at specialty or department stores. The registries provide trained staffs knowledgeable in product, pricing, trends, quality, and stock positions. These people can answer all your questions and give you informed guidance. WHY SHOULD YOU REGISTER? It makes selecting a gift easier for your guests; they are assured that their choice is something you will like and really want. You will also avoid gifts that are not compatible with your lifestyle and you won't have to return duplicates. WHEN? You should register as soon as you become engaged. Then it will also be helpful for guests who will be purchasing gifts for your engagement parties and showers. WHO? Both the bride and groom should take part in the planning of their household and deciding what will go into it. WHAT? Everything you will need in your new home should be registered. Be as specific as possible. Note pattern, color, style number and manufacturer. These details will help family and friends. HOW? Once you have decided on your particular style, visit the bridal registrar; she can answer any questions about coordinating all the elements that go into furnishing and accessorizing your first home to help you create a warm and happy environment. As you choose your items, the registrar will record these as gift ideas. As people call and purchase items, the list will reflect this. If the store has several locations, your selections will be recorded throughout the system so that guests can shop in whichever store location is most convenient for them. Most stores have a free preprinted form; ask for a copy and take it home to review with the groom. This will give you more time and privacy in which to discuss each item before sitting down with the registrar. Home weddings can be held at any time of the day or evening and can be followed by simple refreshments or a full course meal. The house or apartment is usually decorated with flowers or potted plants, and if the wedding takes place in the evening, candles can be carefully placed to supplement soft incandescent lighting. The bride can wear a wedding dress or a street-length dress or suit, but anything longer than a sweep train or fingertip veil would be obtrusive and unmanageable. There are lots of styles for home weddings, and they can be as elaborate or uncomplicated as you want. A mid-morning ceremony could be followed by a budget brunch of croissants, quiche and salad; and bloody marys, mimosas and wine could take the place of highballs and champagne. And, a cocktail reception is fine for a late-afternoon wedding. The idea is to open your home and your heart to the friends and relatives you’ve chosen to share your happiness. GARDEN WEDDING Garden weddings offer the additional space required for more choices. You can rent a tent, invite more people, install a dance floor and hire a band for the occasion. Picture hats and formal wedding attire can be worn. If space is no problem, you can have dinner or buffet. RECEPTION IN A HALL OR CLUB Be sure to reserve the hall as early as possible. Check the room size. Do not sign any agreements unless you are absolutely sure that you have exactly the deal you want. Warmth and consideration shown to you at the time of booking is usually the same kind of service your guests will receive when they arrive. A good caterer will be able to customize a meal for the cost you can afford. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or suggest dishes that you definitely want included. www.alabamabride.com 17 Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:58 PM Page 16 WEDDING PLANNER To Do THREE TO TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE WEDDING Determine budget with parents Type of wedding (very formal—formal—semi-formal) Date, time and place for ceremony Visit officiating clergy for consultation Set appointment to begin Premarital Counseling Choose bridal consultant if desired Type of reception Reserve facility for reception Wedding dress Bridal attendants Attendants’ dresses and mother’s gown Guest list Wedding invitations and announcements Thank you and personal stationery Choose photographer and videographer Registry for gifts—china, silver, crystal patterns Buy a wedding album, gift and guest record file Find a new home and plan furnishings Start make-up lessons, skin care, & hair styling program Ceremony and reception music Order flowers Make appointment for pre-marital examination Consult caterer Discuss honeymoon with groom TWO MONTHS BEFORE WEDDING Check state requirements for marriage license Order wedding and groom’s cake Address invitations Arrange for display of gifts Wedding gown fittings Attendants’ gowns fittings Shop for trousseau Coordinate men’s formalwear attire Select attendants’ and groom’s gifts 18 Montgomery Bridal Directory Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:58 PM Page 17 WEDDING PLANNER ONE MONTH BEFORE WEDDING Mail invitations Set appointment to have make-up and hair styling for portrait Check groom on wedding ring(s) Final fitting of wedding dress and all gowns Have wedding portrait taken Send portrait to newspapers Complete arrangements for reception Arrange transportation & accommodations (out-of-town guests) Arrange for moving (if necessary) Arrange for party rental equipment Arrange transportation to ceremony and reception Arrange for your joint or new checking accounts Have all charge accounts changed Acknowledge each gift as it arrives Arrange for insurance on wedding gifts TWO WEEKS TO ONE DAY BEFORE WEDDING Arrange final seating for the reception Check all gowns and accessories Complete trousseau Arrange going away clothes Arrange for rehearsal Give caterer final estimate of attendance at reception Discuss specific shots with the photographer Finish addressing announcements Present gifts at and attend bridesmaids’ luncheon Arrange any last minute transportation Put all wedding clothes in one place Begin lessons for first dance Get lots of beauty rest WEDDING DAY Relax—Have leisurely breakfast Take time to bathe and dress leisurely Make-up by an artist, manicure, hair styled Leave details to those responsible—It’s Your Day...Enjoy it! www.alabamabride.com 19 Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:58 PM Page 18 D DIRECTORY OF SERVICES BAKERS Lettie’s Cookies & More . . . . . . . . 179 Ashton Plaza Street, Millbrook . . . . . . . .(334) 517-4902 Wedding & Grooms cakes, Cookie Favors & Cupcakes (facebook.com/lettiescookies&more) Publix Supermarkets Cornerstone . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7700 Vaughn Rd., Montgomery . . . . . . . . . . . . .(334) 290-4920 Dalraida Commons . . . . . . . . .4045 Atlanta Hwy., Montgomery . . . . . . . . . . . .(334) 260-7782 High Point Tower Center . . . . . 2451 Cobbs Ford Rd., Prattville . . . . . . . . . . . . .(334) 285-0227 Taylor Junction . . . . . . . . . . . . 7076 Atlanta Hwy., Montgomery . . . . . . . . . . . .(334) 290-4501 Zelda Place . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3026 Zelda Rd., Montgomery . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(334) 244-4481 (www.publix.com) BEAUTY Lydia Culp (Independent Mary Kay Beauty Consultant) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(334) 221-1396 (www.marykay.com/lculp) • [email protected] BEVERAGES (Wine, Beer & Liquor) Frisky Whiskey 1920 Hwy. 18, West Point, Ga . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(706) 645-0355 2232 Victory Drive, Columbus, GA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(706) 689-0434 BODY WRAPS It Works (Kathy Harrell, Independent Distributor) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(770) 314-2629 (kharrell.itworks.com) • [email protected] BRIDAL LUNCHEONS, TEAS, RECEPTIONS & AFTER-REHEARSAL DINNERS Embassy Suites . . . . . . . . . . . . . 300 Tallapoosa St., Montgomery . . . . . . . . . . . . .(334) 269-5055 (www.montgomeryconferencecenter.embassysuites.com) • [email protected] Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts . . . . . . 1 Museum Drive, Montgomery . . . . . .(334) 240-4350 (www.mmfa.org) • [email protected] Riverwalk Catering . . . . . . . . . . . Because today’s bride is venturing beyond the traditional gifts of china and silver, these type businesses have found a gift opportunity by offering bridal registries. Both couples and wellwishers are finding housewares and home furnishing presents to be very sensible gifts. Bridal registry lists today are as varied as the types of brides there are and one’s imagination is the only limit to the extent of these lists. Gift possibilities can range from lamps, mirrors, pictures and pieces of art, to pottery, baskets, and oneof-a-kind stoneware. While brides have traditionally dragged their prospective grooms to china departments only to hear “I really don’t care. Whatever you want is fine with me,” they are finding a much different response when entering a hardware store with their husband-to-be. Grooms find themselves enjoying participating in the selection of ladders, tools, and tool chests. For the couple already moving into their first home, a mailbox or lawn and garden equipment including rakes, shovels, and mowers are important gifts to consider. The idea of having a bridal registry is to provide a convenient way to help your family and friends choose gifts you really want or need. While many brides still want and need to be registered for china and silver patterns, a lot of brides are finding registry departments in lighting stores, art galleries, and hardware stores offer exactly what they need. www.alabamabride.com 29 Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:58 PM Page 26 Oops....Did you miss the deadline? Demetria White and Jeremy McGhee • April 6th, 2016 A hurried dash…That was the beginning for Demi & Jeremy. It was April 7, 2014 on the campus of Auburn University at Montgomery. Demi worked diligently in the computer lab on an assignment all the while unbeknownst to her, she had caught the eye of a handsome stranger. Mesmerized, he scrambled to complete his work to hopefully make time for an introduction; however, he was not quick enough as she had begun to pack to leave before he could finish. Once he exited the lab, he noticed Demi was quite a distance away. “Excuse me ma’am!” he shouted as he attempted to catch up to her. Jeremy went on to explain his reasons for stopping her & asked if could take her out to lunch sometime. She agreed & they went to lunch the next week. The connection was so strong, chemistry so apparent, that they went on a dinner date later that same evening. This was just the beginning of the divine encounter between the two. A whirlwind romance ensued. Endless conversations revealed not only similar goals for the pair, but equally similar foundations. As one of the couple’s favorite Bible verses reads, “For I know the plan I have for you,” declared the Lord, “plans to prosper you & not to harm you, plans to give you the future you hope for.” Jeremiah 29:11 After getting settled into his career as a police officer, Jeremy proposed a year later on the day of Demi’s graduation from nursing school. The two are planning an intimate wedding in April 2016 in Cancun, Mexico in the presence of their closest family & friends. www.alabamabride.com Raquel Ruehl, Photographer 31 Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:58 PM Page 28 W Wedding Rings If your fiancé did not surprise you with an engagement ring when he proposed, you can enjoy the fun of choosing one together. Although some couples choose from the vast array of precious stones available, the diamond remains the most desirable. A diamond’s unmatched brilliance, hardness and rarity are what make it so precious. Making a wise diamond selection requires a certain amount of knowledge both on your part and a reputable jeweler. Contrary to first impressions, diamond value is not determined by size alone. The most important things you should know about diamonds are the five Cs: Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat, and Certification. Cut refers to the shape and the skill and precision through which a diamond is transformed into a brilliant, faceted gemstone. The most popular cuts are: brilliant, oval, marquise, pear-shape, and emerald. ROUND HEART OVAL PEAR MARQUISE EMERALD Clarity refers to the absence of serious flaws or blemishes in the stone when viewed through ten times magnification. Color refers to body color, not the surface that reflects light. Diamonds come in a variety of shades. Your jeweler can advise you on this. Carat refers to total weight of the stone. A carat is divided into 100 points. Remember that cut, clarity, color and carat combined determine the overall quality. Certification refers to a process developed by the International Gemological Institute that provides unquestioned proof of your diamond’s identity. For further information, consult your jeweler. 32 Montgomery Bridal Directory Bridal - Mont. 35th.qxp_Bridal - Mont. 25th 4/3/16 1:58 PM Page 29 H How to Address Invitations Use your file cards and carefully address the envelopes, marking each card with a check as you complete it. Address both the inner and outer envelopes in the same hand. Always write “and.” Symbols are not permissible, except when used as a title. (Ex.: Dr., Rev.) “John” not “J.” No initials are permissible. If you do not know what the initials stand for, omit them. Never write “and Family.” Inside envelope should have “and Guest” (or name). Write out “Forty-First.” Use no figures except for the house numbers and the zip code. Write out “East,” “West,” “North,” “South.” Write out “Street,” “Boulevard,” “Road” and so on. Spell out the State—Alabama—again, no abbreviations. All invitations must be handwritten, preferably in permanent black ink. Never typewrite an address on a formal invitation. Children under sixteen may be included by writing their first names in a line below their parents’ names on the inner envelope. Older children in the family should receive a separate invitation. The inner envelope is inserted in the outer envelope upper side up so that the writing faces the back of the outer envelope. Place invitation in the inner, ungummed envelope. Folded invitations are inserted with the folded edge down. Always send invitations and announcements sealed, with stamps (no meters), first-class mail. Invitations should be sent four to six weeks prior to the wedding. Wedding announcements are addressed in the same way as invitations but are mailed the day of the wedding. 1.
