Our goal is to provide the most current information and helpful articles for seniors and there families. You choose how to use us. In print, Online or In-Store. FEBRUARY 1ST, 2015 Free Guidance for Seniors and Families 4 Aging Tree.com Letter from the Editor AGING TREE ILLUSTRATED began in February of 2014. Now, marking our one-year anniversary, we celebrate the belief and hope that we’re making a difference in Volusia County and helping you, the reader, through our wonderful writers and messages. corey shenk, editor in chief A song lives in our mind, but a moment of real understanding shows itself occasionally. Understanding our place in the world and the people we have the good fortune of engaging with in life often loses its true value (and is nearly impossible) if one isn’t truly paying attention. A moment of clarity bread from another can last a lifetime. However, conveying what’s in our mind is sometimes hard to do, and transferring heartfelt thoughts to paper can be even more difficult. On the one-year anniversary of this publication, this first “letter from the editor” is very important to me. What exactly is this paper, and who or what is here for you? Well, it all starts with those that put their heads down to make it happen. I feel so enriched and fortunate to have the opportunity to know our writers and staff here at Aging Tree Illustrated (ATI). We work hard to put together thoughtful, quality editorials, illustrations and educational pieces. In addition, we work hard to bring you relevant advertisers that have the same beliefs and ethics as we do – those that work hard to earn your business. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Corey Shenk ASSISTANT MANAGING EDITOR Priscilla Kincaid ART EDITOR & GRAPHIC DESIGNER Mona Quinn COPY & RESEARCH Carol S. Grigas Vickie Pleus Courtney Senecal CONTRIBUTORS Loren Fish Tekla Thornton AD SALES Janet Dixon Sometimes we don’t see the light from the dark. Sometimes we don’t see the proverbial forest from the tree: I feel fortunate to have more moments of clarity these days than not. Searching my thoughts for this, my first letter from the editor, was important to me. It’s my truth. I want to be completely transparent regarding what ATI represents, and on my behalf, I want you to know that the design of our message is so very important to us. We take great responsibility in our product, and the message we truly believe combines that of conveying knowledge, overcoming life challenges, the pursuit of happiness, and more––All things that touch us and affect us when we allow the opportunity and we are really paying attention. 866-320-8803 Kohl’s Plaza-Orange City From the Roots 2014 brought a great evolution of this publication: from birth, to crawling, to walking, and now running – in just 12 months. We continue to receive so many compliments from all of you, and I for one want you to know that we heard each and every one. It tells us we are moving down the right path and have made choices that were for the right reasons. Now this doesn’t mean we’re content! As with any endeavor of this nature, you’re always trying to improve. I’d like to encourage our readers to email me or call me with any questions, comments, suggestions, or concerns at anytime. Knowledge and growth cannot be received without feedback. In 2015, we have adjusted our format slightly and we are very excited about the ease of readership, the lightness, enjoyment, and the educational opportunities we have planned. Aging Tree Illustrated has evolved, and in 2015 we are committed first to a positive, happy approach to editorial and content. I want our readers to feel good when they read ATI: I want you to smile. We have also committed ourselves to more pictures and graphics that help the human eye smile. After all, we all are more visual that we think! In closing, I would like to say thank you to our readers, advertisers, and staff. It is such an honor to be surrounded by you. 2015 looks very bright, and as a publication we will always try to recognize those moments of good fortune, of engagement with our readers through our writings and of conveying the true value that is our life here and now. corey shenk CEO, AGING TREE, L.L.C. A History of Valentines Day W hat do ancient Roman religious rites, Papal edicts, medieval beliefs, and English poets have to do with one of America’s favorite holidays? Quite a lot! While today Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate romance and love, the holiday’s origins are remote and its purposes murky. Although the Catholic Church no longer officially honors a St. Valentine, archaeologists have uncovered a catacomb and church dedicated to a martyr of that name, historians acknowledge that Valentine’s Day has both Roman and early Christian roots. I (494–96) abolished the ritual, but whether he replaced it with anything else is disputed. The Christian origins of Valentine’s Day are also shrouded in mystery. Around 197 C.E., a Christian bishop, Valentine of Interrama (now Terni) was martyred in the reign of Emperor Aurelian. Little is known of his life, but that he was supposedly imprisoned, tortured and beheaded in Rome for his Christianity on, according to tradition, February 14th, probably a later addition to the growing legend of St. Valentine. ON THE WAY TO THE ROMAN FORUM In about 289 C.E., a second Valentine, a Christian priest or bishop, was martyred under Emperor Claudius. He was apparently arrested for giving aid to prisoners. While in jail, Valentine converted his jailer when he restored the sight of the man’s daughter. According to another version, he is said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine.” One source of our 21st century ‘spend fest’ is the ancient Roman religious festival of Lupercalia, dedicated to expunging evil spirits and purifying Rome, releasing health and fertility. It was observed on February 13th through 15th, and, led by the Luperci, a holy order of priests, a goat and a dog were sacrificed and eaten, and salt meal cakes prepared by the Vestal Virgins were burnt. Some argue for that more licentious activities took place, but scholars, using sources from antiquity, refute those connections, emphasizing Lupercalia’s links to fertility and safe birth Rome’s Lupercalia pagan festival deliveries. By the 5th century C.E., public observance of pagan rites was outlawed by Rome’s now Christian emperors. However, the Roman populace, although nominally Christian, still clung to the Lupercalia festival. Pope Gelasius A good story, but discounted by historians. This Valentine was supposedly executed like his namesake on February 14th, a coincidence also doubted. EUROPE AND SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE It was the French who boosted the holiday’s association with romantic love. In medieval times, handmade paper cards became the gift of choice of French aristocratic gallants emboldened by courtly love to send to their beloved. Moreover, supposedly on St. Valentine’s Day the French opened the ‘High Court of Love’ in Paris to attend to cases of the heart: marriage contracts, divorces, infidelity, and beaten spouses. And in 1415, it was a French noble who sent the first recognizable Valentine card to his wife. Charles, Duke of Orleans, penned the missive while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, England’s infamous jail for the famous and unlucky. As a high level asset, Charles was ransomed, and unlike St. Valentine died decades later of old age. Receiving a bit more credit for our present-day Valentine’s Day celebration is Geoffrey Chaucer, the 14th century English poet famous for writing the Canter- By Carol S. Grigas, Ph.D. Dr. Grigas is an adjunct professor of history at Daytona State College. bury Tales. So argues Dartmouth English Professor Peter Travis, citing Chaucer’s poem The Parliament of Fowls, which drew on a belief in Europe that birds chose their partners in the middle of February. The poem explores the ideals of cosmic order, political order, and erotic desire. Finally, Nature encourages all her birds to choose their appropriate mates.”1 Or, as Chaucer put it, “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day/ When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.” But Chaucer meant this for the birds! It was William Shakespeare, in his play Hamlet, in 1601, who linked St. Valentine’s Day to cont. pg. 24 Experience Life in Motion Should you or a loved one suffer a stroke, spinal cord injury, hip fracture or major multiple trauma injuries, you need absolutely the best in care. But probably the celebration will play on… at least until the next special day designated for gifts and card… When is Mother’s Day? THE POSTAL SERVICE AND MASS PRODUCTION By the mid-1700s, in England, the passing of love-notes was popular, and some made cards of lace and paper. In 1797, The Young Man’s Valentine Writer was published with suggested rhymes and messages. As postal service grew more affordable, the anonymous St. Valentine’s Day card became popular. By the early 19th century, cards were so popular that factories started to mass-produce them. Hallmark Cards from the 1920s ST. VALENTINE’S DAY IN AMERICA In 1847, Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, received an English Valentine, inspiring her to design her own and to sell them through her father’s stationery store. In 1879, Esther Howland formed a partnership with Edward Taft, head of his family’s enterprise, the New England Valentine Company. In 1881, in an early example of industry consolidation, the New England Valentine Company combined with the Whitney Valentine Company. Despite competition from the Hallmark Card Company which opened in 1910, the Whitney Valentine Company prospered. It was the largest greeting card business in the world until 1942, when a World War II paper shortage caused its liquidation. promoting Valentine’s Day as a time for giving a special piece of jewelry, and another “tradition” took off. By 2010, an estimated one billion Valentine’s Day cards were sold, making it the second most card-heavy celebration after Christmas. Today, the holiday is even bigger business: According to market research firm IBIS World, Valentine’s Day sales reached $17.6 billion in 2014; this year’s sales are expected to total $18.6 billion. Interestingly, about 19.4% of Americans will buy gifts for their furry friends. For some commercialization has ruined the day. But consumers, according to Helen Fisher, a sociologist at Rutgers University, only need to stop buying cards and candy to return Valentine’s Day to its less commercial state. A February calendar tends to be decorated with cupids and red hearts, chocolate and roses - symbols of romance and love in our society today. These markers serve to remind us men that we had better come up with some thoughtful way of letting our spouse know that we love and appreciate them. There is a problem though, and that is that I can use the word love to talk about my favorite team, a beloved pet, my first choice for lunch, or my spouse, “I love my wife”. Love is a many splendored thing, but it has a long list of definitions, as broad as it is long. There are some languages that seem to understand the importance of having several different ~ What is ? ~ has the idea of emotional love. While AGAPE emphasizes the complete giving of love to another person, PHILEO emphasizes the affection, emotion, a fondness one person has for another. 3. EROS: Eros refers to love between a husband and wife. It is more than love making, because it also includes embraces, longing, and caring. 4. STERGO: Stergo primarily refers to love between parents and children. It sometimes refers to love between people and their ruler and also to love between a dog and his owner. LOVE x words to be able to articulate the particular kind of love one is wanting to express. In Greece, for example, there are four major categories of the word love: 1. AGAPE: It has the idea of a person giving all his or her love or favor to another. 2. PHILEO: This Greek word Other words for love, in Greek, combine different words to make a special point. The meanings of these words are here briefly given. AGAPETOS: Beloved or loved one. ASTORGOS: Without love. PHILADELPHIA: Brotherly love. PHILANTHROPIA: Love for mankind PHILEMA: A kiss. PHILIA: Friendship love. PHILOS: A love for a friend or relative. PHILOSTORGOS: Tender love or affectionate love. An impressive list indeed. And any guy would feel well qualified to woo his sweetheart with such a bouquet of words as this in hand. The Bible’s New Testament was written in the Greek language and uses several of these meanings for our word love. By Loren Fish, LCSW The most prominent of these is the word Agape, which is used a total of 259 times as a verb or as a noun. Philos and Phileo occur 54 times. Eros and Stergo do not occur at all in the New Testament. So let’s take a closer look at this word agape. One of the texts that uses this form of the word love is found in John 15:13, where Christ, speaking of himself says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” A couple of years ago a father and his adult son who was disabled, were taking their daily walk along the ocean road, when a car careened towards them, out of control. George Tyson, 61, pushed his son Garry out of the path of the oncoming car, but took the full impact himself. He was killed almost instantly. His 32-year-old son was airlifted to hospital and later discharged after being treated for minor injuries and shock. What a heroic act by a father for a son he loved dearly. 2012, in a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado, when James Holmes opened fire, three boyfriends leapt to cover their girlfriends, shielding them from harm with their bodies, and thereby saving them, at the cost of their own lives. This showed a greater kind of love, than just romantic. Dr. Librescu was a professor at Virginia Tech in April, 2007. When a gunman began to open fire on random people. By holding the door shut, the seventysix-year-old Romanian teacher managed to stop the gunman from forcing his way into the classroom, but in doing so, he was shot 5 times himself—including a fatal bullet to the head. All but one of his students managed to escape with their lives. We might find it easy to risk our lives for someone we cared about, yet what if you didn’t even know the person you are putting your life on the line for? Do you remember January 13th, 1982? Air Florida Flight 90 had smashed into in icy Potomac river, in the middle of a snowstorm, and all but six passengers were killed. Some 20 minutes later, a helicopter arrived to rescue survivors. After getting one man to safety, the helicopter threw a life-ring to Arland Williams, Jr of Atlanta… who immediately gave it to the passenger next to him in the icy water. He continued to do this until only he was left and when the helicopter returned for him, he had drowned. What prompts someone to do such selfless acts, even for perfect strangers. In this season of red hearts and red roses, let us look beyond the romantic love, and begin to add to our lives the kind of love that is empty of self. I Corinthians chapter thirteen (the love chapter) describes this kind of love. 1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body (as a martyr), but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love (agape). (NIV). Loren Fish, LCSW is a Christian Counselor and Whole Health Educator.
