For years Tara Hearn dedicated herself to providing
advice and guidance in the field of education.
Then, about six years ago, she decided it was time
for a change as she moved into a very different line
of work and became a real estate agent.
Along with real estate agents Joanne Broderson,
Jane Johnston and Neil Bodset, Hearn founded 100+
Real Estate Agents Who Care. It’s an organization
modeled on an international charitable movement
called 100 Women Who Care in which members
dedicate themselves to providing direct donations to
charities chosen by the group.
“I had discovered that Victoria’s real estate agents
were an amazing group…a generous and caring
group of individuals…and we were confident they
would respond to the idea,” said Hearn.
She was right. The group got a lot of support from
individual realtors, brokerages and corporate sponsors
and has already managed to raise and distribute over
$30,000 to five local organizations.
Their first recipient was the Laren Society, a Community Living Support group whose deeply rooted
belief in the importance of family and community is
applied to strengthening the link between the community and the prison system.
The next recipient of the realtor-based charity was
Artemis Place; a project providing educational options
for young women who have been unable to succeed
in the regular school system. “When we got the
donation from 100+ Real Estate Agents Who Care,
it was incredibly important. We couldn’t provide our
program to these young people without that kind
of generous support,” said
Rachel Calder, the project’s
executive director.
The next two recipients
were Anawim House and

provide housing and support
for the most disadvantaged

It’s a commitment to community that
has its roots in a 2005 document adopted by the Victoria Real Estate Board
(VREB) over a decade ago. In 2005 the
VREB set out a statement of principles
to provide a framework for their profession’s government relations, community
outreach, and communications activities.
It was called “Quality of Life” and based
upon five guiding principles…principles
that, to this day, are at the heart of a legacy.
The first was the call for economic
vitality, based on the wish that full employment was the single most important
element for a healthy community. The
second principle was based upon a belief
that everyone has a basic right to safe,
decent and affordable housing. It’s a
principle that led the VREB over the years
to involve itself in issues like action for
the homeless, women’s housing issues,
and non-profit housing.
Thirdly, there was a call for environmental sustainability. Realtors addressed
policies to save watersheds to supporting
a schools.
The VREB called upon government
and industry to help support property
ownership as a fundamental right.
While it’s grand to have guiding
principles, the proof of the VREB’s commitment can be found in its Community
Donations Program. Every year the board
collects donations and then calls for
funding requests from the community.
The criteria for qualifying for financial
support is based upon the Quality of Life
principles.
In 2015 and 2016 the VREB presented
HeroWork, a citizen’s counseling centre,
with a $20,000 donation.
“Think of it as a modern-day
barn-raising,” said Paul Latour, executive
director of the HeroWork Society.
With the help of the VREB’s donation, the “radical renovations” target
the non-profit infrastructure of the city,
including shelters, soup kitchens, and
youth housing. In 2016 the target was
the Rainbow Kitchen, a facility that
serves more than 36,000 meals a year.
Another recipient is Habitat for Humanity, working to provide housing to
residents who might never otherwise be
able to afford a home. The initial support
has continued, with realtors helping Habitat’s Re-Store Kitchen Donation Program
advocating its use both for the donation
of material and the purchase of materials
for their own renovations.
“Last year alone we generated over
a third of a million dollars through the
program,” said Jim Walker, the Manager
of Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store. “We
would never have achieved that level of
support without the help of Victoria’s real
estate agents.”
As well, the VREB funds and supports a variety of other charitable causes
throughout the year. On July 15, they
will be supporting the Mustard Seed
(food bank) in an event dubbed “five
hole for food”. It’s a street hockey tournament to raise funds for the organization’s much needed service to the city’s
disadvantaged.
For almost six years now, Tara has
worked as a realtor – the past two with
Century 21 Queenswood Realty. She is
currently on the board for the Canadian College
of Performing Arts, event chair for Pamper with
Purpose, which she produces annually along
with an amazing committee to raise funds for the
Eldercare Foundation.
Hearn is also the co-founder, along with three
other realtors, of 100+ Real Estate Agents Who
Care – a fundraising collaborative modelled on
100+ Women Who Care and an international
movement of fundraising. The group meets four
times a year to pool resources and donate to local
charities that support home-fulness in the city.

Kitchen refresh? Call Habitat’s Restore

Victoria’s housing market has never been hotter
and, as any realtor will tell you, renovations are often
a big part of both buying and selling a home.
Frequently, realtors are advising their clients
wishing to sell their home on how some low cost
renovations, particularly to dated kitchens, can add
significant value to their property. But expensive renovations may be a daunting proposition. Jim Walker,
the Manager of Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store, said
he may have the solution.
Habitat offers a kitchen donation program whereby homeowners can donate their appliances, cabinets, countertops and other kitchen material to ReStore for resale. The material is then made available
to customers looking to do some renovations in their
homes, updating their tired kitchens with the donated
material at a fraction of the cost presented by new
materials.
“It’s really a win/win situation,” said Walker. “The
material we pick up from homes is always of very
good quality and just what home owners might be
looking for to update their own kitchens. The people
who have donated the material may just have tired of
their old countertops for example, but they’ll be perfect for another kitchen...really representing a major
improvement in the new home.”
Part of Walker’s strategy for procuring and selling
the kitchen materials comes from a close partnership with Victoria’s realtors who help to inform their
clients about the program. He explained that their

clients can do everything from replacing tired cabinetry and countertops to installing fresh appliances
at a reduced cost, all the while helping Habitat for
Humanity as they work to provide affordable homes
for qualified families in the community.
Last year, the program generated over $350,000
for Habitat for Humanity, while reducing the needless
disposal of over 200 tons of quality materials to the
landfill.
But selling materials to home owners looking to
sell their homes is only half of the equation. Walker
said that Re-Store also picks up donated material
from new home owners who are looking to update
the kitchens in their new homes.

will not only pick up the material, but
will also issue a tax receipt for the value
of the material.
Walker is also very excited about
a new part of that
pick-up service being
explored by Re-Store.
“We’re looking at
not only accepting
cabinets and countertops, but we’re
developing a service
where we will help
with the renovation
by doing the physical removal of that
material from the home, using trained
volunteers,” said Walker.
Another portion of the Re-Store
program in which the partnership with
local realtors is critical is the removal
of materials from the homes of clients
who are downsizing.
“Realtors will put us in touch with
people who are selling their family
home and moving to a smaller home
and have all this furniture, tools, and
garden equipment that they can’t use,”
explained Walker. He said that Re-Store
helps out those individuals by accepting
those items for re-sale, again to benefit
Habitat for Humanity. A tax receipt is
provided and the realtor’s clients and
those clients know that their surplus
possessions are going
to support a good
cause.
Last year Habitat
generated $750,000
through those generous donations.
Habitat for
Humanity, Victoria,
currently has an inventory of 22 homes
and is working on
four more properties for sale in the very
near future. The families who qualify
for the homes must have an annual
salary of under $65,000, provide 500
hours of volunteer labor to Habitat,
