WELCOME TO CASPER
AND NATRONA COUNTY
With one foot in the
past and an eye toward
the future, Casper is a
year-round destination
that offers the very
best in nature, history,
recreation, culture and
entertainment.
4 | Welcome
so you’re planning a visit to casper — wyoming’s adventure capital. Good decision!
Our climate and natural setting offers an exceptional variety of activities within a relatively
small area. An abundance of wildlife along with our mountains and rivers make Casper a
destination for enjoying the great outdoors. Although Casper has grown considerably in the past
few decades, it hasn’t been at the expense of nature. Wildlife and city life blend seamlessly here,
as evidenced by the antelope that occasionally stroll through town. A gorgeous pink sunrise in
Casper is rivaled only by a fiery orange sunset on the vast canvas of our open sky. Sagebrush
covered plains and cottonwood trees provide a snapshot of how our country looked hundreds of
years ago. It’s a vista that is both rugged and regal.
The landscape is a nice frame to the thriving community within its borders. Casper has a
vibrant art and culture scene guaranteed to make an evening on the town one to remember. The
shopping opportunities here rival that of many larger cities, but we also have antique shops,
local bookstores, western boutiques and family-owned restaurants to help visitors reconnect with
the spirit of small-town America. And with the countless local acts, international touring acts and
large-scale productions that regularly hit the stage here, you won’t be lacking for entertainment
when you visit.
The spirit of adventure is what defines Casper, and it’s what you’ll find when you visit.
Check out CasperWyoming.info for adventures, itineraries, vidcasts, must-see attractions,
accommodations, and more. Be sure to use the Top 5 lists in this guide for suggestions on things
to do, see and enjoy while you’re here.

MAKE THE TREK TO
INDEPENDENCE ROCK
VISIT THE CROWN JEWEL OF CASPER
Once upon a time, there was an oil refinery near the North
Platte River just west of downtown Casper that played a
major role in the world’s economy. When it closed in 1991,
the site was contaminated with nearly a century’s worth
of oil spillage, sludge and buried pipeline. BP-Amoco
(British Petroleum having merged with Amoco, the former
owner of the site) partnered with the Department of
Environmental Quality and the City of Casper to clean
up the property. Today it stands as a shining example
of how recreational development and the ecosystem can
work hand in hand. Contaminated soils were removed,
engineered wetlands and ponds were installed to remove
iron and other contaminants, and over 2,000 trees were
planted to return balance to the area. Now known as the
Platte River Commons, the site features the Three Crowns
Golf Course, Gegi’s Bistro, the Whitewater Kayak Park,
and biking and walking paths throughout the property.
Interpretive signage explains how rehabilitation occurred,
but the single best way to appreciate the transformation
is to stand beneath the crystal-blue sky, inhale the clean
Wyoming air and view the immaculate golf course,
the families of ducks wandering through the natural
vegetation, the abundance of trees and the river slowly
meandering by.
Over one hundred and fifty years ago, when America was still in its infancy,
emigrants forging West toward the promise of a new, brighter future passed
through Central Wyoming. Along the way, many of them stopped at a large
granite formation located about 50 miles southwest of Casper. As a testament to
their journey, they would carve their names into the rock that stands 136 feet tall
and is equal to an area of 24.81 acres. Today it’s known as Independence Rock,
and it is a poignant reminder of the sacrifice and fortitude of those who knew
a better future lay before them. Take an afternoon to visit this national historic
landmark — who knows, you might just find the names of some of your ancestors!

GO WITH THE FLOW
The North Platte River flows
through Casper, and the
Platte River Parkway is one
of the best ways to explore
it! It follows the river from
Paradise Valley Park in
West Casper to the North
Casper Soccer Complex
at Bryan Stock Trail nearly
11 miles away and was
designed with recreation in mind.
You can bike, run, walk and skate
on the paths; float, fish, kayak and
canoe in the water; or enjoy a picnic
by the water or dine at the Tate

Fremont Canyon is located near the town of Alcova about
30 miles southwest of Casper. The North Platte River cuts
through the canyon, where it is blocked by Pathfinder Dam
to fill Alcova Reservoir. It’s a popular spot for boating,
fishing, or just fun in the sun. Climbers from all across the
country appreciate the climbing opportunities here as well;
climbs range from 40 to 400+ feet and 5.6 to 5.13 in difficulty,
so beginners and experienced climbers alike will find just the
challenge to suit them. But the real draw of the Canyon are
the breathtaking views. As the sun sets and casts a warm,
rosy glow upon the canyon walls and flowing waters, you’ll be
humbled by nature’s unparalleled splendor.
GO CHASING WATERFALLS
There’s just something about hiking up a mountain that makes
everyday problems seem small by comparison. Garden Creek
Falls, located in Rotary Park, at the base of Casper Mountain,
is the perfect spot to hike your cares away. The trail is rated as
moderate and primarily used for hiking, but the spectacular
view leading up to a gorgeous waterfall makes it well worth the
effort.

Lee McCune
Braille Trail
With approximately 42 kilometers of groomed
trails, the Trail Center provides opportunities
for both day and night cross-country skiing.
The beautiful terrain and variety of challenges
for different skill levels make this a popular
destination. In fact, prior to the Salt Lake City
Olympics, two teams trained here. Night skiing
is a particularly unique experience, with the
lighted loop providing enough visibility to
avoid accidents, but not so much as to wash out
the beauty of a star-filled night sky. A visit to
the Trail Center is more than just fun — it’s good
exercise and will sharpen your senses!
Beartrap
Meadow
It’s true the absence of sight heightens the
other senses, and if you don’t believe it, make a
visit to the Lee McCune Braille Trail located on
Strube Loop. Even if you follow the trail without
wearing the visibility-obscuring glasses, you’ll
be pleasantly surprised at how attuned you are to
the sounds of flowing water and tweeting birds,
the smells of wildflowers and pine needles, and
the feel of mossy rocks and knotty tree trunks.
Interpretive plaques with Braille imprints make
this trail a truly unique experience.

HIT CASPER’S WATERWAYS
The North Platte River is a
680-mile river that flows
right through the heart of
Downtown Casper. Along
with Alcova and Pathfinder
Reservoirs, which the river
helps to feed, Casper’s
waterways provide countless
opportunities for recreation.
Here are some of the areas
you will definitely enjoy:
Pathfinder
Reservoir
This reservoir is fed by the Sweetwater
and North Platte Rivers and controlled by
Pathfinder Dam. It’s home to various fish
species and is a great spot for camping,
boating and hiking. Anyone interested in
engineering should visit the Pathfinder
Interpretive Center and Trail to learn about
the hundred-year history of this example of
American inginuity.
After Grey Reef, the North Platte River meanders towards
Casper and beyond. And all along the way, there are
plenty of access points for floating, canoeing, kayaking
and fishing. There’s Lusby, Government Bridge / Miles
Landing, By The Way Ranch, Sechrist, Speck /
Bessemer Bend, Robertson Road and Paradise
Valley (see foldout map) — all public access
points, and all beautiful destinations. Floating
the river is a great chance to take in Central
Wyoming’s beauty at a leisurely pace.
Fremont Canyon
About four miles from Pathfinder Dam,
you’ll find the entrance to Fremont
Canyon. The beautiful rock walls on either
side of the river reach high into the air and
provide climbing opportunities for novices
and experts alike. But even if you’re not
that adventurous, it’s well worth a visit to
explore Wyoming’s exposed history.
Covering nearly 2,500 acres, Alcova
Reservoir is arguably one of Casper’s
premier destinations for sportsmen,
boaters, campers and anyone looking
to have fun in the sun. The lake air is
filled with a celebratory spirit during the
summer holidays, but with a total of six
campgrounds, any time is a good time to

camp. Sandy, Okie and Black Beaches each
merit a full-day visit, but adventurous types
can also explore and find their own perfect
areas to wile away an afternoon. And the
Alcova Lakeside Marina is a full-service
restaurant and lounge where you can also
rent all types of watercraft and stock up on
supplies before hitting the water.

Sportsmen, rejoice! The Grey

not just bragging — American

Platte River
Parkway
Located on the outskirts of Downtown Casper,
the Platte River Parkway is an ideal spot
for flyfishing. It also features a manmade
whitewater park for anyone wanting to spend
an afternoon kayaking; nothing makes for
memories of fun and excitement like riding
the waves of the river as it crashes over the
rocks. And with a park right there, it’s a
terrific spot to picnic and view Casper’s

MORE TO EXPLORE…
VISIT The SEVEN Wonders of Casper
For a fun way to pass an afternoon, visit the Seven Wonders of Casper. No one knows who came up with the list, and there’s
not always consensus about it, but it’s a great way to become familiar with our city. In no particular order, they are:
1
Lookout Point on Casper Mountain:
Halfway up Casper Mountain Road is a
spot to park where you can see Casper
sprawled out before you. An old legend
holds that the city was designed to
resemble Wyoming’s bucking horse logo.
Although Casper has long since outgrown
the silhouette of earlier days, the nostalgia
lives on. Still, it’s an impressive view …
especially at night when the city is lit up.
2
Gravity Hill: This optical illusion is located on Casper Mountain
on the road headed to Garden Creek Falls; a short distance after the
turn-off, you’ll reach a large tree to your left. Bring your car to a
complete stop and put it in neutral. Gradually, your car will begin
rolling up the hill. You won’t believe your eyes!
5
Hidden Clock: Obscured in a
downtown alley is this relic
from a former era. Park
on the third level of the
Downtown Parking Garage
and look to your left — you’ll
see a faded clock in the brick
wall!
6
3
Egg Beater: One of Casper’s most recognizable features is the tall,
white, three-legged Wells Fargo Tower downtown. Stand beneath
it and look directly up as you spin around in place. You’ll feel like
you’re inside an egg beater. Not recommended for those with weak
stomachs.
4
Echo Chamber: Some
people call this the
Center of the World.
Located behind the
Natrona County Public
Library, this curved wall
will echo whatever is
spoken by the person
standing in the middle
of the circle, although
everyone else will just
hear the speaker’s
normal voice.
18 | Explore: Seven Wonders of Casper
Magic Mirror: Who needs a funhouse? Just check out the mirror
located outside of Fashion Crossroads in Downtown Casper.
If you stand halfway behind the mirror and move your arms and
legs, the image is repeated in the mirror … so to anyone watching,
it appears as if the person is suspended in midair. A fun thing for
kids — and adults too!
7
Spiral Staircase:
Another hidden
treasure in a
downtown alley!
This giant spiral
staircase behind
Toy Town on Center
Street used to lead
to apartments, but
now it just stops.
The structure is a
poplar location for
senior portraits as
well as providing
a unique view of
downtown Casper.

go green … LITERALLY!
Going green has a dual meaning at Three Crowns Golf Club
in Casper. The 18-hole course, a par 72 Robert Trent Jones,
Jr. Championship design, is one of the premier golf facilities
in the country. Thanks to a comprehensive rehabilitation
effort, the former oil refinery site is now home to a beautiful
course sprawling across 110 acres just west of downtown
with stunning views of Casper Mountain and the North
Platte River. The greens feature lush Kentucky Bluegrass,
white sand bunkers, eight lakes and a practice facility, as
well as a full-service golf shop and a restaurant. With a
clear blue sky overhead, deep green grass underfoot and
a family of ducks motoring across a pond, you’ll want to
spend all day at this crown jewel of Casper.
FLOAT THE RIVER
5
Change your outlook on life in one afternoon. All you need is a
watercraft (inner tubes work surprisingly well), life jackets and
a willingness to go with the flow. Floating the North Platte
River is a beautiful and relaxing way to enjoy the lazy days
of summer. There are plenty of places you can start and stop.
For a longer float, you can go from Bessemer Bend to Robertson
Road; for a shorter trip, try Morad Park to downtown Casper.
Along the way, you’ll see a variety of birds skimming the water
as they snag something to eat, wildlife along the banks, and
even the occasional fish leaping in and out of the water. Plan
to relax, soak up the sun and enjoy the untarnished beauty of
Wyoming. Life jackets are available to borrow free of charge
from the Casper Fire Department.

Teddy Roosevelt was known for his love of hunting, and there’s no
better place than Wyoming to understand his appreciation of the
sport. Wildlife is abundant in Natrona County, making it a destination
for game hunting enthusiasts throughout the country. Mule deer,
elk, waterfowl and pronghorn antelope — North America’s fastest land
mammal — are in abundance here. Casper has several supply stores
and outfitters, as well as taxidermists and meat processing facilities
to make your hunt successful and worry-free. So brew up a thermos of
hot coffee and don your orange vest — it’s open season for adventure!

BRUSH UP ON YOUR
BRAGGING SKILLS
Fishermen have been known to stretch the truth just a
little bit, but that’s generally unnecessary around here!
American Angler Magazine recently named the North Platte
River Grey Reef Section the Number One Big Fish Fishery
in the World, so you’re sure to catch something that will be
the envy of your friends. Fishermen can nab trophy-sized
catches in the 18” - 20” range, and although most weigh
around 4 pounds, it’s not unheard of to land one weighing
10 pounds or more! Here are some of the fish that are
abundant in our region:
TURN TO THE PROFESSIONALS
Before heading out for a big day on the water, be sure you are fully prepared.
Fortunately, Natrona County has plenty of convenient places to stock up! In
addition to outlets such as Sportsmen’s Warehouse, Rocky Mountain Discount
Sports and The Ugly Bug Fly Shop, many guide services sell equipment as well.

in world-class trout fishing all winter long, while Crazy Rainbow Fly Fishing &
Wingshooting has been branded the Orvis Endorsed Outfitter on the North Platte
River. Grey Reef Anglers & Wingshooting offers fishing float trips for trout on the
Grey Reef and Miracle Mile sections of the North Platte River.
North Platte Lodge is located on the Grey Reef section of the North Platte

Cutthroat Trout
A somewhat elusive catch, this fish is primarily found
in the Snake River below Grey Reef.
Rainbow Trout
Found in the North Platte River, Pathfinder and Alcova,
this is the most common fish to catch.
Once you’re outfitted for adventure, you’ll
need to decide where you want to cast

their preferred locations at Miracle Mile,
Pathfinder Reservoir, Seminoe and Alcova,
as well as trophy ponds. But the North Platte
River offers several public access points,
including Lusby, Government Bridge /

and Paradise Valley. Each of these spots has
its own unique beauty and challenges for
fishing, so you may just decide to head out
on your own and explore the region.

you’ll see stunning architecture ranging from Colonial Revival to

SATISFY YOUR SWEET TOOTH cravings

What’s that saying about feeling like a
kid in a candy shop? You certainly will at
Donnells Candies located in Downtown
Casper in the Atrium Plaza! The first thing
you’ll notice is the warm, comforting smell
of freshly melted chocolate. Then the
huge selection of sweet treats to choose
from — homemade ice cream, traditional
and unique fudge flavors, caramels, nut
clusters, toffees, truffles, peanut brittles,
popcorn, pralines … the list goes on. And
every last piece is made on site by the
Stepp family, who have been producing
quality candies since 1956. Be sure to buy
a little extra to take home.
LET THEM ENTERTAIN YOU
Casper has a thriving live
entertainment scene, and there’s
a little something for everyone.
Theatre enthusiasts can enjoy
Broadway without going to
New York by attending one of
the Casper Events Center’s
Best of Broadway shows or
taking in a production from the

If you’re like a lot of people, you probably pass up all sorts of little
indulgences because you feel too guilty. Well, good news: Casper is a guiltfree zone, so now’s your chance to pamper yourself! Book a day at one of
Casper’s spas and let all your cares melt away while you enjoy a personal
massage and refresh with a body wrap at Bamboo Spa & Salon, luxuriate
with a mani-pedi at Casablanca Hair Gallery and Spa or try out a new
hairstyle at Seasons Day Spa. There are a number of establishments here that
serve women, children, and yes, even men, so book your appointment now.
You’ll go home feeling — and maybe looking — like a whole new person.
DINE AROUND THE WORLD … LOCALLY
One of the best things about traveling is dining out. Aside
from not having to cook your own meals, it’s fun to taste
new dishes or enjoy a local restaurant’s take on an old
favorite. Well, we’ve got dozens of local restaurants to
satisfy any appetite! Wyoming is beef country, of course,
and we’ve got some of the best around. FireRock and Poor
Boys Steakhouse are both known for their award-winning
U.S.D.A. handcut steaks, while the world-famous Wonder
Bar has lots of variations on the classic hamburger — try

From national chain
stores to one-ofa-kind boutiques
and everything in
between, shoppers
can always find what
they’re looking for
at a price they can
afford. Here are top
destinations to get
you on your way:
DIRECTORY
Downtown Casper
Sometimes it’s just fun to head downtown,
grab a beverage and take your time exploring
the shops that make Casper a prime shopping
destination. Blue Heron Books & Espresso
and Wind City Books are both good places
to start — you can browse for gift books from
local authors while your drink is being made.
Then you might want to head out to Fashion
Crossroads for women’s fashions; Sierra West
for home decor items; Toy Town Children’s
Store for toys, games and more; The Merry
Peddler for must-have kitchen items; or
Bushwells Sporting Goods for all your athletic
equipment needs. You’ll also find restaurants
where you can refuel, and 13 movie screens to
catch the latest crowd pleaser.
Eastridge Mall
The 60+ stores at the Eastridge Mall make this the largest shopping mall
in Wyoming. Of course, there’s the convenience of strolling from store
to store in a temperature controlled environment, but there’s also the
abundance of great deals. Target, JCPenney, Sears, Macy’s and Best
Buy are the major anchor stores, but there are plenty of specialty shops,
such as Aeropostale, American Eagle, C.J. Banks and Pro Image. Bed,
Bath & Beyond has everything for the home, Bath & Body Works has a
rotating stock of yummy-smelling lotions and candles, and Game Stop
has the latest in video and computer games. Pair that with a food court
and vendor kiosks, and you’re all set for a complete shopping adventure!
Sunrise Shopping Center
On the west side of Casper, you’ll find the Sunrise Shopping Center, the
first enclosed mall of its kind in the United States. This indoor stretch
of stores runs the gamut from Finishing Touch Custom Framing Art
Gallery to Harbor Freight Tools to Envy Tanning & Rejuvenation
Studio. You’ll also find a furniture store (Flanigan’s Furniture), a
teaching supply store (Tomcats Learning), a fitness equipment store
(Cowboy State Fitness Equipment), a clothing boutique (Cadillac
Cowgirl) and more. Let the kids go bowling at Sunrise Lanes while you
grab a hot coffee at Sunrise Coffee Cafe and stroll the 1/4-mile long
indoor walkway in front of the shops.
Mountain Plaza
Located at the juncture of CY Avenue and Wyoming Boulevard,
Mountain Plaza has something for everyone! It’s anchored by three
large retailers: Sutherland’s Lumber and Home Improvement Center;
Farnham’s Furniture Gallery; and Walmart Supercenter. Rounding out
the plaza are Aaron’s Furniture-Electronics-Computers-Appliances,
Radio Shack, Dollar Tree, Alltel Wireless, Game Stop and Great
Clips, not to mention a nail salon, fitness centers and a few financial
institutions. It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon here, given that
there are also several dining establishments: McDonalds, Burger King,
Domino’s Pizza and Johnny J’s Diner. Bring your shopping list, grab
some java at Starbucks and see what deals you can find!
