When it closed in 1991, the site was contaminated with nearly a century’s worth of oil spillage, sludge and buried pipeline. BP-Amoco (British Petroleum having merged with Amoco, the former owner of the site) partnered with the Department of Environmental Quality and the City of Casper to clean up the property. Today it stands as a shining example of how recreational development and the ecosystem can work hand in hand. Contaminated soils were removed, engineered wetlands and ponds were installed to remove iron and other contaminants, and over 2,000 trees were planted to return balance to the area. Now known as the Platte River Commons, the site features the Three Crowns Golf Course, Gegi’s Bistro, the Whitewater Kayak Park, and biking and walking paths throughout the property. Interpretive signage explains how rehabilitation occurred, but the single best way to appreciate the transformation is to stand beneath the crystal-blue sky, inhale the clean Wyoming air and view the immaculate golf course, the families of ducks wandering through the natural vegetation, the abundance of trees and the river slowly meandering by. Over one hundred and fifty years ago, when America was still in its infancy, emigrants forging West toward the promise of a new, brighter future passed through Central Wyoming. Along the way, many of them stopped at a large granite formation located about 50 miles southwest of Casper. As a testament to their journey, they would carve their names into the rock that stands 136 feet tall and is equal to an area of 24.81 acres. Today it’s known as Independence Rock, and it is a poignant reminder of the sacrifice and fortitude of those who knew a better future lay before them. Take an afternoon to visit this national historic landmark — who knows, you might just find the names of some of your ancestors! #3 GO WITH THE FLOW The North Platte River flows through Casper, and the Platte River Parkway is one of the best ways to explore it! It follows the river from Paradise Valley Park in West Casper to the North Casper Soccer Complex at Bryan Stock Trail nearly 11 miles away and was designed with recreation in mind. You can bike, run, walk and skate on the paths; float, fish, kayak and canoe in the water; or enjoy a picnic by the water or dine at the Tate #4 Pumphouse Trail Center featuring Gegi’s Bistro. Any way you choose to explore it, the Parkway will lead you to a renewed appreciation of the beauty of nature! #5 AERIAL OF THE FORMER REFINERY SITE IN OPERATION, 1920s AdventureGuide | CasperWyoming.info Fremont Canyon is located near the town of Alcova about 30 miles southwest of Casper. The North Platte River cuts through the canyon, where it is blocked by Pathfinder Dam to fill Alcova Reservoir. It’s a popular spot for boating, fishing, or just fun in the sun. Climbers from all across the country appreciate the climbing opportunities here as well; climbs range from 40 to 400+ feet and 5.6 to 5.13 in difficulty, so beginners and experienced climbers alike will find just the challenge to suit them. But the real draw of the Canyon are the breathtaking views. As the sun sets and casts a warm, rosy glow upon the canyon walls and flowing waters, you’ll be humbled by nature’s unparalleled splendor. GO CHASING WATERFALLS There’s just something about hiking up a mountain that makes everyday problems seem small by comparison. Garden Creek Falls, located in Rotary Park, at the base of Casper Mountain, is the perfect spot to hike your cares away. The trail is rated as moderate and primarily used for hiking, but the spectacular view leading up to a gorgeous waterfall makes it well worth the effort. But plan to spend the day — the recreational opportunities are only limited by your imagination. rotary park Situated near the base of the mountain, this park is home to Garden Creek Falls and the 4.5 mile Bridle Trail that offers spectacular views of the city below, beautiful scenery and even a waterfall. The park is equipped with grills and fire pits, so plan on a picnic once you've finished hiking or biking. Crimson Dawn Park & Museum Grab your bow and arrows and hone your archery skills at this practice range. Located just a short jaunt west of Beartrap Meadow, the area is also near camping and RV sites, as well as a number of public access roads and trails for those who might want to cruise around on an ATV. If you happen to be in Casper during the summer solstice, plan to visit this park and folksy museum. Named an “Editor’s Pick” by 10Best.com, this attraction draws hundreds of visitors every summer to hear about the friendly elves, witches and forest spirits that call Casper Mountain home. Casper MOUNTAIN TRAIL Center Lee McCune Braille Trail With approximately 42 kilometers of groomed trails, the Trail Center provides opportunities for both day and night cross-country skiing. The beautiful terrain and variety of challenges for different skill levels make this a popular destination. In fact, prior to the Salt Lake City Olympics, two teams trained here. Night skiing is a particularly unique experience, with the lighted loop providing enough visibility to avoid accidents, but not so much as to wash out the beauty of a star-filled night sky. A visit to the Trail Center is more than just fun — it’s good exercise and will sharpen your senses! Beartrap Meadow It’s true the absence of sight heightens the other senses, and if you don’t believe it, make a visit to the Lee McCune Braille Trail located on Strube Loop. Even if you follow the trail without wearing the visibility-obscuring glasses, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how attuned you are to the sounds of flowing water and tweeting birds, the smells of wildflowers and pine needles, and the feel of mossy rocks and knotty tree trunks. Interpretive plaques with Braille imprints make this trail a truly unique experience. 14 | Explore: Casper Mountain Adams Memorial Archery Range By far one of the more well-known spots on Casper Mountain is Beartrap Meadow, a large, open area atop the mountain. Every summer, it hosts the Beartrap Summer Festival; throughout the rest of the year, it draws visitors who want to hike, mountain bike, bird watch, picnic or camp. The crisp, clean air and smell of pine trees will awaken your spirit! Along with Alcova and Pathfinder Reservoirs, which the river helps to feed, Casper’s waterways provide countless opportunities for recreation. Here are some of the areas you will definitely enjoy: Pathfinder Reservoir This reservoir is fed by the Sweetwater and North Platte Rivers and controlled by Pathfinder Dam. It’s home to various fish species and is a great spot for camping, boating and hiking. Anyone interested in engineering should visit the Pathfinder Interpretive Center and Trail to learn about the hundred-year history of this example of American inginuity. After Grey Reef, the North Platte River meanders towards Casper and beyond. And all along the way, there are plenty of access points for floating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. There’s Lusby, Government Bridge / Miles Landing, By The Way Ranch, Sechrist, Speck / Bessemer Bend, Robertson Road and Paradise Valley (see foldout map) — all public access points, and all beautiful destinations. Floating the river is a great chance to take in Central Wyoming’s beauty at a leisurely pace. Fremont Canyon About four miles from Pathfinder Dam, you’ll find the entrance to Fremont Canyon. The beautiful rock walls on either side of the river reach high into the air and provide climbing opportunities for novices and experts alike. But even if you’re not that adventurous, it’s well worth a visit to explore Wyoming’s exposed history. Covering nearly 2,500 acres, Alcova Reservoir is arguably one of Casper’s premier destinations for sportsmen, boaters, campers and anyone looking to have fun in the sun. The lake air is filled with a celebratory spirit during the summer holidays, but with a total of six campgrounds, any time is a good time to AdventureGuide camp. Sandy, Okie and Black Beaches each merit a full-day visit, but adventurous types can also explore and find their own perfect areas to wile away an afternoon. And the Alcova Lakeside Marina is a full-service restaurant and lounge where you can also rent all types of watercraft and stock up on supplies before hitting the water. | CasperWyoming.info | 1.800.852.1889 Sportsmen, rejoice! No one knows who came up with the list, and there’s not always consensus about it, but it’s a great way to become familiar with our city. In no particular order, they are: 1 Lookout Point on Casper Mountain: Halfway up Casper Mountain Road is a spot to park where you can see Casper sprawled out before you. An old legend holds that the city was designed to resemble Wyoming’s bucking horse logo. Although Casper has long since outgrown the silhouette of earlier days, the nostalgia lives on. Still, it’s an impressive view … especially at night when the city is lit up. 2 Gravity Hill: This optical illusion is located on Casper Mountain on the road headed to Garden Creek Falls; a short distance after the turn-off, you’ll reach a large tree to your left. Bring your car to a complete stop and put it in neutral. Gradually, your car will begin rolling up the hill. You won’t believe your eyes! 5 Hidden Clock: Obscured in a downtown alley is this relic from a former era. Park on the third level of the Downtown Parking Garage and look to your left — you’ll see a faded clock in the brick wall! 6 3 Egg Beater: One of Casper’s most recognizable features is the tall, white, three-legged Wells Fargo Tower downtown. Stand beneath it and look directly up as you spin around in place. You’ll feel like you’re inside an egg beater. Not recommended for those with weak stomachs. 4 Echo Chamber: Some people call this the Center of the World. Located behind the Natrona County Public Library, this curved wall will echo whatever is spoken by the person standing in the middle of the circle, although everyone else will just hear the speaker’s normal voice. 18 | Explore: Seven Wonders of Casper Magic Mirror: Who needs a funhouse? Just check out the mirror located outside of Fashion Crossroads in Downtown Casper.
