Although these medications are generally allowed by the FAA for flight duties, there are variables with each individual's situation that could render a particular medication inappropriate for flying because of case history or adverse side effects. Some medications are being used "off label". This means that a drug is prescribed for symptoms that do not fall within the FDA's approval guidelines for that drug. This is just one example of why the FAA might not approve a drug that is on the list. FAR 61.53 prohibits a person from acting as pilot in command or as a required pilot flight crew member while that person (1) "knows or has reason to know of any medical condition that would make the person unable to meet the requirements for the medical certificate necessary for the pilot operation": or, (2) "Is taking medication or receiving other treatment for a medical condition that results in the person being unable to meet the requirements for the medical certificate necessary for the pilot operation."
