Well worth seeing, whatever your politics, purely for Meryl Streep’s astonishing, all but flawless performance; a masterpiece of mimicry which re-imagines the Iron Lady in all her half-forgotten glory. J. Edgar Wed 28 Mar 8pm TBC | 137mins | Clint Eastwood Clint Eastwood-directed biopic following the career of controversial detective J. Edgar Hoover (impeccably played by Leonardo DiCaprio), the first director of the FBI. In his later years many felt he abused his power, using illegal methods to gain evidence and gathering secret files on political figures during his long and notorious career. W.E. Sun 1 Apr 5pm | 8pm TBC | 115mins | Madonna Andrea Riseborough, as a sympathetic and vulnerable - rather than opportunistic - Wallis Simpson, and James D’Arcy, as King Edward VIII, star in Madonna’s lavish and visually stunning retelling of the story of a glamorous outsider whose romantic yearnings made her one of the most notorious women in the world. Payne’s first feature since his bittersweet smash hit Sideways treads the same prickly, seriocomic ground. Carnage Wed 4 Apr 8pm 15 | 79mins | Roman Polanski Following a scuffle their children have had at school, two New York couples meet to discuss things ‘in a civilised manner’. This comedy of manners veers heavily towards the comic, so things hardly go as planned and all too soon parental dignity takes a nose dive into a pitch-black farce of unbearable tension. With Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet. The Woman In Black Easter Sat 7 Apr 5pm | 8pm TBC | TBC | James Watkins Supernatural chiller based on Susan Hill’s bestseller. Young lawyer Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) travels to a remote village to organise a recently deceased client’s papers, where he encounters the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance. “What she wants is unknown, but she always comes back. The spectre in darkness, the woman in black”. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Easter Sun 8 Apr 5pm | 8pm TBC | TBC | John Madden A group of British retirees are hoodwinked into checking into an apparently plush luxury retirement home in India, but all is not what it appears to be. The Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways. The national treasure of a cast includes Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith and Dev ‘Slumdog’ Patel. War Horse Easter Mon 9 Apr 2pm | 5pm TBC | 146mins | Steven Spielberg Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s bestselling novel, this tells the tale of a boy who heads to the Flanders trenches in 1915 to rescue his beloved nag. Spielberg brings us a sweeping epic of the Great War, replete with a veritable who’s who of established and up-and-coming Brit thesp talent and a stirring, grandiose score from the unmistakable John Williams. A Dangerous Method Tue 10 Apr 11am | 2pm | 8pm 15 | 99mins | David Cronenberg Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud. Both men fall under Sabina’s spell. Scripted by Christopher Hampton from his play The Talking Cure. Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close Wed 11 Apr 8pm TBC | TBC | Stephen Daldry Jonathan Safran Foer’s sophomore novel comes to the screen courtesy of Billy Elliot director Daldry. A nine-year-old amateur inventor, jewellery designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player and pacifist searches New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father when he was killed in the 9/11 attacks. Starring Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks. FILM Box Office: 01892 678 678 Red Dog 21 Sun 15 Apr 7pm PG | 92mins | Kriv Stenders Set in the colourful Australian outback and based on Louis de Bernières’ book, this is the quirky and endearing true story of a dog that befriends a whole mining community before choosing his master. The distinctive red dust of the landscape is a perfect match for the coat of the film’s star - a lovable red cloud kelpie. A bonzer family film! Martha Marcy May Marlene Wed 18 Apr 8pm 15 | 101mins | Sean Durkin Haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman struggles to reassimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult. Elizabeth Olsen scores with a star-making turn in Durkin’s mesmerising feature debut, a smart, suspenseful reflection on insidious cults and the psychological vulnerabilities on which they prey. Anonymous Sun 22 Apr 8pm 12A | 129mins | Roland Emmerich On the eve of the day traditionally celebrated as Shakespeare’s birthday, Trinity brings you this taut political thriller, brimful of treachery, betrayal, secrets and illicit affairs not unlike the works of the Swan of Avon himself – which questions the true authorship of all the plays, sonnets and poems bearing his name. With Vanessa Redgrave and Rhys Ifans. Coriolanus Tue 24 Apr 11am | 2pm | 8pm 15 | 122mins | Ralph Fiennes Trinity’s celebrations of the Bard continue with this modern updating of his tragedy about a Roman general (Fiennes) and war hero undone by his own integrity. For his directorial debut, Fiennes has assembled a terrific cast - Vanessa Redgrave, Jessica Chastain and Brian Cox – who deliver a rousing primal drama, sure to appeal to action fans and Shakespeare lovers alike. Black Gold Wed 25 Apr 8pm TBC | TBC | Jean-Jacques Annaud Set in the 1930s Arab states at the dawn of the oil boom, the story centres on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. Antonio Banderas, as rapacious desert sheikh Emir Nesib, and Freida Pinto as Princess Leyla, star in the biggest Middle Eastern epic since Lawrence Of Arabia. Bill Cunningham New York Sun 29 Apr 8pm TBC | 84mins | Richard Press CINEMA Converting our Cinema to digital, including our new state of the art sound system, has cost Trinity over £70,000. Whilst we have had a generous grant from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council we still need to find about 70% of that ourselves. To help us we are asking that you make a modest 50p contribution to digitalisation in your ticket price. We hope that you will find this well worth the improvement in your cinema experience at Trinity, and even with this we are still the cheapest cinema in Tunbridge Wells! DIGITAL Documenting uptown fixtures (Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe et al), downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, octogenarian photojournalist Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair. A delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace. 22 CHILDREN & YOUTH trinitytheatre.net Trinity Youth Theatre Company In a safe, professional, working environment, young people are encouraged to develop performance and theatre-making skills, grow in confidence, work as a team and develop an appreciation and enjoyment of theatre. From an idyllic riverside setting, through the snowbound Wild Wood via Toad’s motoring misadventures to the final battle for Toad Hall, this enchanting production about selfless friendship is interwoven throughout with the real spirit of British adventure. £5 | Ages: 5+ Aesop’s Fables Cat’s Grin Theatre Company Sun 19 Feb 3pm Young Aesop lives on the edge of a big forest that is home to an assorted collection of animals. Each animal has an important lesson to learn, featuring in his or her own cautionary tale (such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Tortoise and The Hare) and appearing in other fables too. This “near soap-opera” approach makes the animals’ characters more rounded, allowing a young audience a clearer appreciation of the human frailties depicted. £5 | Ages: 5+ Our children’s season is sponsored by Kent College 23 24 CHILDREN & YOUTH trinitytheatre.net NT Connections: Alice By Heart By Steven Sater & Duncan Sheik Trinity Youth Theatre Company in association with Chichester Festival Theatre and the National Theatre Sun 11 Mar 3pm In the throes of adolescence, determined Alice Parsley convinces her seriously ailing friend Alfred to follow her one last time ‘Down the Hole’ and play White Rabbit to her petticoated heroine. Photographic portraits and text. Frances Bloomfield Thu 26 Jan - Sat 11 Feb Failing To Notice Frances Bloomfield’s work explores the narratives of dreams and the ‘improbable’ scenarios that we unconsciously construct. The models/ sets juxtapose a variety of elements, most of which are recycled, rediscovered or refashioned. Like a dream they raise questions about what we fail to notice around us. On show will be a collection of art boxes and photographic prints. www.francesbloomfield.com David Peduzzi Tue14 Feb - Sat 3 Mar A Sense Of Space Here are uplands and cliffs, light and air. The images describe two different landscapes in Sussex and Scotland, and the flight of birds. Sussex based artist David Peduzzi shows drawings, prints and pastels inspired by the character of these open spaces and the movement of birds over the hills and sea. www.davidpeduzzi.co.uk GALLERY Box Office: 01892 678 678 Ruth Anderson Tue 6 - Sat 17 Mar Reflections Ruth Anderson is both artist and curator of her photographic images. Through this exhibition she becomes the communicator of the relationship between reflection, consumerism and reality. She creates a conversation carefully coaxed into being through layers of captured reflection and exposes the viewer to a host of reflections within the spectacle of the high street. Jo Louca Tue 20 Mar - Sat 7 Apr In The Light Of Day Through her contemplative approach, Surrey based artist Jo Louca portrays the essence of the land in translucent layers of traditional oil glazed paint. She concentrates on the elemental power of light, atmosphere and mood rather than a figurative representation of it. The initial inspiration for paintings comes simply from gazing up at a light-filled canopy, the magical effect like a stained glass cathedral canopy of trees. www.jolouca.com Town and Country Foundation Showcase Tue 10 - Sat 21 Apr Celebrating the start of our third year in partnership with Trinity, Town and Country Foundation is delighted to showcase a host of vibrant artworks from our talented communities across Kent. Will Taylor Tue 24 Apr - Sat 12 May Natural Studies ‘Natural Studies’ is an exploration of the science of natural forms. Inspired by the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci through to the fauna of Kent and Sussex, Will Taylor’s drawings and prints draw you into a close-up examination of mathematical ideas, then make you stand back to take in enlarged botanical and animal studies.
