ORLANDO – PURE
ENJOYMENT IN THE
SUNSHINE STATE
With around 300 days of sunshine a year,
it’s not for nothing that Florida is known
as the Sunshine State. The Hapimag
Resort Orlando lies in the heart of central
Florida in Lake Berkley.
The Hapimag Resort is in the ideal location for get
ting in your hired car and driving in any direction to
explore the Sunshine State of Florida. Including all
its big leisure parks, of course. The renowned Walt
Disney World parks and Sea World are only around
8 kilometers away, and it’s only 10 kilometers or so
to Universal Studios. You can drive to the Atlantic
coast and the Gulf of Mexico in an hour or two as
well.
In the immediate vicinity of the resort you will find
numerous restaurants and a 24-hour shopping
center.
The Hapimag Resort
Orlando is built in
the style of a typical,
colorful American
town house.

History
HISTORY
AND CULTURE
Orlando takes its name from the US army
officer Orlando Reeves. The first step
towards it becoming the holiday paradise
it is today was taken when Walt Disney
World Magic Kingdom opened in 1971.
Before the first European settlers arrived in 1836
the area around Orlando was sparsely settled by
the Muskogee and other Native American tribes.
By 1842 more and more settlers had found that
they liked central Florida. Among them was Aaron
Jernigan, who founded the settlement of Jernigan
near Fort Gatlin, an old army camp. In 1857, when it
consisted of a collection of shacks and a few saloons,
it was named after the US army officer Orlando
Reeves, who had been killed by the Seminole in
1835. In the 1850 s and 1860 s, cattle-raising was still
its defining industry. A first courthouse was built in
1863, which also served as a school and church.
Popular and well known
Orlando is the fifth largest
city in the state and is
thought of as the tourism
capital of the US. It owes
its reputation, above all,
to the theme parks Walt
Disney World and Universal
Studios.

USEFUL THINGS
TO KNOW
Opening hours and eating times, how
they tell the time and how you take
money out: what you need to know.
– Americans use a 12-hour clock (morning is from
12 a. m. to 11:59 a. m.; afternoon and evening
is 12 p. m. to 11:59 p. m.). So midnight is 12 a. m.,
and noon is 12 p. m.
– Americans eat early in the evening, between
6 p. m. and 8 p. m. A service charge is rarely in
cluded in restaurant prices. A tip of 18 to 20
percent is normal, depending on the restaurant
and service.
– Many gas stations and drug stores are open
24 hours a day. The large Walmart supermarket
1 kilometer from the Hapimag Resort is also open
around the clock.
– On cash machines (ATMs) there are signs indicat
ing which credit cards are accepted. It is generally
not possible to exchange money in banks. When
it is possible, the charges are very high. When you
pay using a credit card, you are asked two things
by the card reader. First: “Debit or credit?”
Choose “credit.” “Debit” means American debit
cards only. Then: “Cash back, yes or no?” Many
Americans choose “yes” to get cash from their
account. Tourists generally don’t do that.
The phone has a key for the
emergency number 911.
The US emergency number
is stored on the phone
in all holiday apartments
in the Hapimag Resort
and can be called by press
ing the emergency key
on the keypad.

SAFE JOURNEY
In Florida things may be very different
from what you are used to at home.
Starting with driving.
–Always keep a few dollars with you to pay the tolls
on the freeway. Many car rental companies offer
a Florida Sun Pass as part of the deal.
–Fuel is sold in gallons (1 gallon = 3.78 liters). There
is a large selection of fuel types. Just choose the
cheapest. If your credit card doesn’t work at the
pump, tell the cashier how much fuel you want.
–At traffic lights you can turn right on a red light –
unless there is a sign explicitly prohibiting it. It’s
nice and practical, but it isn’t mandatory. If you are
in any doubt, wait for a green light.
–You must not pass a stationary yellow school bus if
it has its flashing lights on.
–The car parks are huge! Make sure you know where
you have parked your car so that you don’t have
to spend a long time looking for it when you come
back.
Exactly the right speed
Speedometers and GPS
systems show miles per
hour (1 mile = 1.6 km). The
speeds shown are exactly
right. In other words, there
is no tolerance value as
there is in most European
cars.

Theme parks
ENJOYMENT IS
THE THEME
Orlando without a visit to a theme park?
Not possible. Let these magical worlds
cast their spell over you.
Walt Disney World alone has six large parks for days
full of enjoyment. Two of them are water parks. Each
of the four theme parks has its own main attraction:
Magic Kingdom has Cinderella’s castle, Epcot has its
huge geodesic sphere, Disney’s Hollywood Studios
has the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard,
and Disney’s Animal Kingdom has its Tree of Life.
Film lovers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit
Universal Studios. Experience how Hollywood
Productions are made. A variety of themed areas
provide fun and excitement. The Harry Potter
attractions in the two Universal parks of Adventure
Island and Universal Studios are a must for all
fans of the little magician.
Other theme parks
– SeaWorld, a very popular
theme park with a marine
life theme
– Legoland Florida
– Kennedy Space Center
– Busch Gardens
– Island of Adventure
You can get information
on these at reception.

SEE ALLIGATORS
UP CLOSE BUT
IN SAFETY
At Gatorland you can look forward to
magnificent scenery, animals and
impressive shows. It is not just alligators
that are at home here.
The adventurer Owen Godwin wanted to allow peo
ple to get close to crocodiles and alligators without
exposing them to danger. With that idea in mind, he
founded the Florida Wildlife Institute in 1949. Today
the park is known as Gatorland and runs its own
breeding program.
Several hundred alligators, crocodiles and snakes
live here and can be observed. There are a number
of different shows put on every day. The more
daring visitors can take a zip line ride for a view of
the park from above.
More information is available at reception.
White alligators
One of the highlights
at Gatorland are white
alligators, which look
as if they have been
painted. They haven’t
of course.

Excursions

EVERGLADES ON

swamplands and nature reserve that are
inaccessible to normal boats.
With the wind in your face and the vibration of the
boat’s propellers under your feet, take a trip to the
Everglades, Florida’s most famous natural wonder.
Discover a world of alligators and turtles living in
the wild, exotic birds and tropical swamp plants. It’s
an unforgettable adventure for the whole family.
You can get detailed information on the various trips
at reception.
The best time of day
In order to see as many
animals as possible, book
your trip before 11 a. m. in
