ASSIGNMENT :
29th Annual Auction
Operation OES: Aardy’s Mission Possible
March 14, 2015
Montgomery Park
DATE :
LOCATION :
Dear Aardvarks:
Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to infiltrate this highly attended, thoroughly
entertaining event at Montgomery Park. Our intel shows that although OES prides itself on
being Always Open, this event sells out and you purchased your tickets quickly to successfully
complete your mission.
The identified purpose of Operation OES is to raise annual funds for our school to support
programs that enhance our students learning experience. Upon successful completion of our
2015 mission, we hope to fund ongoing programs such as AASK and employee professional
growth and development. We would also like to consider supporting projects such as:
purchasing a new school bus, modernizing classroom furniture to create better opportunities
for experiential leaning, and completing additional gym safety improvements.
There are a few key targets without whom this event could never have happened. Behind the
scenes, Cindy Plummer is one everyone clearly depends on, supported by exceptional leadership
from Chair Lisa Kellogg and her Co-Chair Michelle Fitzhenry. How they manage to coordinate
this mission and wrangle their “volunteers” is one of the secrets we hope to discover.
Report back immediately following the event. Our goal is to have the most successful auction
ever—and with your focus and attention, it will be.
Sincerely yours,
Mo Copeland
Operation OES / Case Files / 5
To maintain your deep cover, you must arrive appropriately attired in your working undercover
togs, flaunt your bid number at every occasion, silently take over the Wall of Wine, and
generally add to the frivolity of the evening. Our inside information leads us to believe that
attendees are generally there, surprisingly, to have fun. Report back what you observe, and
be careful not to reveal your identity.

ASSIGNMENT: 29th Annual Auction
Operation OES: Aardy’s Mission Possible
DATE:

LOCATION:
Montgomery Park
Dear Friends,
I need your help with a serious matter. I am assigned to this case and I cannot solve it
alone. I NEED your help!
Countless hours have gone into the planning of this mission. Auction chair Lisa Kellogg
and her co-chair Michelle Fitzhenry, along with many volunteers, have put in countless
hours getting stuff, putting stuff together, making stuff happen.
OES continues to deliver a world-class education to our children, but they cannot do it
alone. Over the years, the OES auction has raised funds that support this very important
mission by providing funding for professional development, enhancing vital resources
at our school, and continuing to improve our physical campus. But these things cannot
continue to happen without your acceptance of this mission. I beg you to accept!
1. Connect with friends
2. Celebrate OES
3. Buy lots of stuff (not just a little, but a lot)
4. Raise your paddle (not just in the auction but during the paddle raise)
5. Make a positive difference
This message will self destruct.
Sincerely yours,
Agent K
(AKA Kate B. Lieber)
Operation OES / Case Files / 7
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is as follows:
THANK YOU LISA AND MICHELLE
FOR MAKING OUR MISSION POSSIBLE!
Mr. Hunt, this isn’t mission difficult,
it’s mission impossible. “Difficult” should be
a walk in the park for you.
— Mission Commander Swanbeck / Mission Impossible
MESSAGE FROM
THE AUCTION CHAIR
I welcome you with great passion and
delight to the 29th annual Oregon Episcopal
School Auction. This year’s auction is
operating under the code name, OOES—
Operation Oregon Episcopal School: Aardy’s
Mission Possible. Our Secret Agents have
accepted their mission from the OES Secret
Service and have been working diligently on
their assignment for months. Tonight is the
night that our secret mission is exposed.
Our Secret Agents have used
their highly honed skills and expertise to
make tonight perfect. They have devoted
themselves to our mission. The parent
volunteers have given hundreds of hours
of their time to develop tonight’s amazing
event. Their devotion to the mission is
second to none. I thank each and every one
of them so very much. Get ready for an
auction full of excitement and adventure!
My co-chair, Secret Agent
Michelle Fitzhenry, has a brilliant mind and
a generous heart and has been beside me
every step of the way. Together we worked
under the code, “In union there is strength”
and completed our mission to bring you
a special night devoted to raising funds for
our wonderful school. Not only did I have
the best Secret Agent by my side, but also
I now have a lifelong friendship that I will
forever cherish.
I would also love to thank
Cindy Plummer, our Auction Coordinator.
I have had the privilege of working with
Cindy for the past two years. I will forever
remember all the words of wisdom she
taught me and the many laughs we shared.
Cindy, you are the “Bond” that holds our
Agents together.
No mission would succeed without
the most important assets in the world:
family and friends. My husband, Jordi,
has always looked at me with task in hand
and believed with his whole heart that I
will succeed. Chairing this auction was no
exception. Staring deep in my eyes he said,
“You will do a great job!” I responded quickly
with, “Are you sure?” Thank you babe, I
could have never done this without you.
I love you to the moon and back!
A very special thanks goes out to
my little ones, Jordi Jr, Bella, and Sebi!
Thank you for your patience and support.
Each of you understands the importance of
giving back to our communities, and you
encouraged me every step of the way.
Big hugs and kisses to all of you!
And to all of my friends, thank you
for always asking what you could do to help
or being an attentive listener when I needed
someone to review ideas with. Without each
and every one of you, we would not be
where we are tonight.
And so, here we are. The Secret
Mission is no longer secret and is now yours
to accept. Your mission, should you choose
to accept it, is to raise your bidder cards
high and often. Don’t let the competition
trick you with their marksmanship! Each of
us has a bond, a real bond to OES, and
tonight is your night to review your catalog
carefully and develop your bidding strategy.
I welcome all of you to eat, drink, mingle,
and most importantly… BID, BID, BID!
Remember, for our beloved OES,
the World is Not Enough. Let’s make this a
Mission Possible.
Shaken, not stirred,
Lisa H. Kellogg

Silent Auction
The extremely popular Wall of Wine returns this year to Aardy’s Mission Possible.
The auction committee has procured over 100 bottles of wine through donations from
OES friends, family and supporters. The Wall of Wine features wine valued anywhere
from $20 to over $100. Purchase a paper bag-wrapped bottle and find out what fun
wine you have purchased!

Silent Auction
To bid on a Silent Auction item, clearly write your name and bid number on the bid
sheet at the specified level you want to bid for the item. If you are out-bid, you may
re-bid at a higher level. Bids may continue to be entered until the close of that Silent
Auction section. The last and highest bid at the close of that Silent Auction section
shall win the item. The closing time for each Silent Auction section is posted and
announced. Upon the closing of a Silent Auction section, a Silent Auction volunteer
identifies the winning bid for each item. This person has the final authority to
determine the winning bid and this decision is final.
To determine if you are the winner of a Silent Auction item, proceed to Check Out
after 9:20 p.m. and request an accounting of your purchases. Please do not remove
any items from the tables. Volunteers will collect your items for you once you present
your receipt at the Will Call area at the end of the evening.

How to Pay
To bid during the Live Auction, hold your bid number high until the auctioneer
acknowledges your bid. The amount of your bid is the amount being called out by the
auctioneer at that moment. If you are the winner of a Live Auction item, the auctioneer
announces your bid number as the bid winner. A volunteer asks you to sign a “runner
sheet,” which validates you as the bid winner. You must sign this to validate your
acceptance as the bid winner.
You must pay in full for all purchases during the night of the Auction.
At Registration, we encourage you to register with the credit card you would like to
use for your purchases (VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express).
This will significantly simplify and expedite Check Out for you and greatly reduce the
administrative burden on the auction team. However, OES Auction does accept
checks, cash, or credit cards at Check Out. You may pay for Paddle Raise donations
of $1,000 or more with stock transfers.
Check Out opens at 9:20 p.m. If you must leave before 9:20 p.m., please let the Check
Out staff know approximately 15 minutes prior to your departure and they will arrange
for your invoice, payment, and pickup.
Prior to leaving for the evening, please proceed to Check Out to review your final
invoice and complete payment. Payment can be completed by either confirming billing
to the credit card you provided during Registration or by paying with check or cash.
Credit cards will be charged on Friday, March 20, 2015 to allow adequate time to
review purchase data for accuracy. Once payment is completed, a receipt is provided
showing all the items purchased during the evening. Then, please proceed to the Will
Call area to pick up your items.
If you check out before all items are posted to your account, a revised and complete
invoice of your evening’s purchases will be sent to you the following week.

THE OES AUCTION
“PADDLE
RAISE”
AN EASY WAY
TO GIVE
GENEROUSLY
The Paddle Raise is an easy way to support programs that
enhance our children’s learning experience. The proceeds from
this portion of the program contribute significantly to the
success of the auction and provide additional funding for
Special Initiatives. For example, the 2014 Paddle Raise helped
fund the new Theatre Arts Lab in the Upper School, new
Scoreboards for the Turf Field, Gym and SPARC, a new ceiling
in SPARC, and the new Science Labs in the Middle School. The
“wish list” of things we would consider purchasing with 2015
funds includes a new school bus, modernizing classroom furniture
to create better opportunities for experiential learning, and
completing additional gym safety improvements.
During the Paddle Raise simply hold your bidder number high
for the gift that feels right for you.
Please raise your paddle and contribute generously to
the vision of keeping OES a leader in education.

Over the past 11 years, the OES Auction has raised more than

LICENSE TO THRILL—
A DAY AT
THE RACETRACK
Mission:
Spend a day at Oregon Raceway Park (ORP) in Grass Valley, Oregon,
with OES parent, Christopher Bender. Christopher’s 007 driving experience
includes former lead instructor for the Oregon Region of the Porsche
Club of America, part-time professional driving coach, and the owner
of the dark gray street-legal race car you have likely seen flashing
through the OES parking lot at 3PM on sunny days.
The winner’s full day of conceptual and practical instruction on the art
of performance driving will include a private, covert adventure in the
passenger seat beside Christopher for a few, one of a kind, thrilling
sessions around the track — in a car with over 450 horsepower hauling
only 2000 pounds of weight. This will be one wild ride!
What’s more, you can experience a few sessions on the track in your own
personal car, with or without Christopher coaching from the passenger seat.
Restrictions:
Participation will require the signing of waivers to absolve ORP, Palatov Motorsport and
Christopher Bender of liability.
Event will be scheduled concurrently with one of Palatov Motorsport’s private testing
days at ORP.
For safety and liability reasons, winner will be unable to drive Christopher’s car on the track.
Winner may only drive personally owned vehicle on track.
Most sporty/sports cars can be driven safely on track, but all cars must pass a safety
inspection and mechanical problems and repairs are the sole responsibility of the owner.

Contrary to popular impression, driving a car at increased speed is
all about fitness and skill — and as Q would tell you, it takes years
to master. It is mentally engaging and delightfully challenging.
Most people come away from the track, smiling ear to ear, with strong
aspirations of returning soon.

Mission:
The Q branch has provided you the perfect Bondmobile getaway car – and a
getaway indeed you’ll have on this mission! The winner of this package
can pick up your Porsche Cayenne or Panamera from Sunset Porsche Audi
on Friday at noon, and take off for a long weekend in Seattle, designed
for two couples. Even James Bond would say there are few missions better

best kept secret, The Ruins, a private dining club. Here you’ll find
yourself at a very understated, yet magical place for an exclusive

himself after a day of adventure.
After a night of dining, rest up for the next day’s adventure in

2014 OES

The Portland Skyline
Ms. Erickson and Ms. Tharp
Pre-K Class Project
The children of Ms. Lauren and Ms. Colesie’s Pre-Kindergarten class
have funneled their unbridled energy into their own whimsical depiction
of the Portland skyline. Each child selected a bright color of acrylic
paint and used their sweet four- and five-year-old fingerprints to
complete a visually stunning landscape of buildings and bridges that
mark our unique city. A truly collaborative work of art, each student
learned first-hand how the whole is truly greater than the sum of
its parts!

Touched By An Aardvark
Ms. Bridgnell
Kindergarten Class Project
Ms. Bridgnell’s Kindergarten students have collaborated to create an
artistic masterpiece on gallery-wrapped canvas. Inspired by the
OES tagline, “Always Open,” the children have woven together their
individual fingerprints to create this beautiful expression of
togetherness in the shape of our beloved mascot, the Aardvark. Each
student is represented by a single color, and combined, these colored
fingerprints yield a piece of work that is sure to bring joy and a
sense of community to any home.
Child Art Tiled Mirror
Ms. Burton
Kindergarten Class Project
The children in Ms. Burton’s Kindergarten class used black ink pens to
draw pictures on ceramic tiles of things that grow. They painted their
tiles with watercolors to enhance their ink drawings. The completed
tiles were affixed to surround the frame of a mirror. The children have
been talking about things that grow in the classroom and this project
is a reflection of their learning.

Sticking Together
Ms. McAuley
Kindergarten Class Project
Our project unites three favorite explorations of Ms. McAuley’s
kindergarten class: nature, creating with yarn, and getting to know
each other’s inside stories. Working together, we collected a variety of
sticks from the OES wetlands, observing their unique markings, curves
and branches. Each student wrapped a chosen stick with yarn, taking
care to allow a bit of the stick’s “inside story” to show through. The
sticks were then arranged together and displayed in a shadow box frame
with a linen background to create a beautiful piece that represents each
child individually and the class as a whole. The framing was donated by
Village Frame & Gallery.
4004
The Dragonfly
Ms. King
Primary Class Project
A wood mosaic hand-painted dragonfly was created by the Primary class.
The dragonfly is their class name this year and the mosaic is completed

Nature Inspired Collaborative Wall Art
“Wood Sticks — Bringing the outdoors in…”
Ms. Eastman-Brown
First Grade Class Project
Using elements collected from nature walks (sticks, twigs, beaver chips,
leaves, rocks, shells, pinecones, moss, berries), each kid uses their
own imagination to create an unique one of a kind art piece showcased in
a beautiful shadowbox to express the love of outdoor explorations.

Set of 20 Hand-Painted Appetizer Plates
Mr. Whitmore
First Grade Class Project
Each 6” square porcelain appetizer plate was individually hand-painted
in a geometric pattern. The students and teachers chose a color
combination and pattern to work with. The plates are monogrammed on the
back so you will be able to credit the artist’s fine work. These plates
will be the hit of your next cocktail party.
The paint is food safe and dishwasher resistant if placed in the top rack.
POP Art: Portland, Oregon Places
Ms. Blake
Second Grade Class Project
Mrs. Blake’s Second Graders have created original watercolor works to
reflect their Portland Project Places. These original pieces were then
printed and transferred to wooden blocks. The blocks have been
mounted and framed to create a collaborative work of art that not only
expresses the originality of its artists, but also the diversity of
our beautiful city.

Portland Bridges Dessert Plates
Ms. Schilling
Second Grade Class Project
Ms. Schilling’s second graders chose their favorite Portland Bridge and
re-created it in a black line drawing onto a beautiful individual white
dessert plate. The plates were glazed and fired for a sophisticated
finish that will add character to any home! Package includes a set of
18 plates.

Not Those Traditional Nesting Dolls
Ms. Baker
Third Grade Class Project
Russian Nesting Dolls are not just pretty toys, they also have that
great balance of charm and mystery. Ms. Baker’s third graders used their
creativity and imagination to breathe life into them! The set of fifteen
blank dolls has been turned into historical characters: explorers,
pioneers, Native Americans and fur trappers. The largest doll is
decorated by eighteen circles (one for each of the third grade artists);
the circles represent Native American totem symbols. Each doll is
finished by a few layers of clear lacquer which protects art work from
fading and brings out the colors. This set is a truly unique, one of a
kind piece of art that will add warmth to any interior and put
a smile on anyone’s face!
4012
Handcrafted House
Ms. Hunger
Third Grade Class Project
We have created this wooden architecture and tailored it to meet your
pet baby’s needs and desires. This bunk bed doghouse is a functional
furniture worthy of display in your favorite room. The enclosed crate on
the bottom gives your pet the comfort and protection he/she desires to
feel safe. The top is a daybed for relaxing and watching television.
We know you have invested so much time in training, feeding and loving
your pet. Now is the time to reward them with their own little piece of
real estate to call home.
Is your family filled with kids but no pets? Children love giving this
house to their favorite doll/toy and getting lost in play for hours.
How would you like to use it? Either way you would be helping our school
make a difference in the lives of the students, teachers and parents.

Hands Around the World
Ms. Narramore
Fourth Grade Class Project
This lovely art piece was created by the fourth grade students as
they learned about the daily lives of children from the far corners of
the earth. Each student designed a hand related to their country of
study using patterns, symbols and motifs that communicate something
about their research. Each individual hand was then brought together in
this ceramic art piece as a symbol of international unity.
Operation OES / Class Projects / 75
“Chess is played with the mind and not the hands.” (Renaud and Kahn).
While this is a famous and largely true statement, it is the hands that
brought this chess board to life. Seventeen children from Ms. Mounsey’s
classroom were given two tiles and one chess piece to make their own.
This set represents just how individually creative our children are and
is an example of how the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember you have
within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the

Ms. Akehurst’s students beautifully capture the optimism and enthusiasm
of dreaming big in this colorful collage. In this wonderful art piece,
each student in the class is represented by their own uniquely decorated

Olive Oil
Tasting
You and your party of 12 will
enjoy the unique experience of
tasting olive oils from locally
grown olives, paired with wines
from Durant Vineyards. Owner Paul
Durant will discuss the growing
of olives and the wines as you
enjoy this unique tasting
opportunity. Take home a basket
of samples tonight.
Located in the heart of the
Oregon wine country, the latest
agricultural venture is growing
olives. Starting in 2005, the
Durant family planted a small
olive orchard at Red Ridge Farms
and has been adding to it every
year since. Combined with
this, the Durant family has been
cultivating and harvesting fine
wine grapes since 1973. The grapes
are provided for select wineries
in Oregon, as well as used
to produce Durant estate wines.
The Durants have focused on
producing premier Pinot Noir,
Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.
Come spend an afternoon at the
Oregon Olive Mill and learn
about the history of olive oil
and olives in Oregon. Then,
following a tour of the mill,
you and your guests will attend
a private olive oil- and winetasting/pairing.
This event will be held at the
Oregon Olive Mill, 5510 NE Breyman
Orchards Rd., Dayton, OR 97114.
This package includes
transportation to the Oregon Olive
Mill/Durant Vineyards in Dayton
courtesy of ecoShuttle, an ecofriendly charter bus and commuter
shuttle service.
Dates for tasting and
transportation are to be
mutually agreeable.

A Basic Sausage
Making Class
with the Portland
Meat Collective
Gift certificate for one person
in a basic sausage-making class
with the Portland Meat Collective.
Camas Davis is the founder
of the Portland Meat Collective,
the first meat collective
in the United States. The goals
of the collective are to put
small farmers in direct contact
with consumers in order to sell
sustainably raised animals for
food. She also teaches classes
that educate people about how to
butcher and use all parts of an
animal. She has since started a
nonprofit, the Meat Collective
Alliance, which helps people in
other states across the country
begin their own collectives.
For three years, Camas and Kara
Tambellini, Upper School English
Teacher, have offered a Butchery
Winterim class to OES students.
The students visit farms, meet
farmers, learn how to butcher
chickens, ducks and an entire pig.
Camas and Kara then rent
commercial kitchen space and teach
students how to prepare different
cuts of meat. It’s a blast for
the kids.
In April, 2013, The New York
Times sent a reporter to travel
with our group for a few days.
The resulting story ran in their
Sunday magazine.
Gift certificate can be redeemed
for any scheduled sausage class
that is not already sold out.

Family Farm Visit—
Wingham Farms
Enjoy an up-close-and-personal
farm visit for up to six kids and
adults to Wingham Farms (near
Banks), the family farm of OES
teacher Julie Sikkink and her
husband, Daniel Lee (OES alumnus
parents, Class of 2009 and 2013).
Enjoy a picnic lunch made of farmfresh ingredients, pet the farm
animals, get a milking lesson
and take home the makings of your
dinner: eggs you collected, some
garden produce, farm-grown and
raised fruit preserves, and some
fresh cheese made from the milk
of our cows.
We would like the visit to be
scheduled in advance for either a
weekend in the spring, or any day
in the summer after school gets
out until August 20. At least one
adult must come with the children
on the visit. This package
includes a basket with eggs and
jam to take home.

A Day in the Life
of An Explorer with
Tom Handel
Spend a day learning to navigate on
land and water like the pioneers
of the west. Start at 9am at OES
with Tom Handel and walk the depths
of the wetlands searching for
possible food sources (both plant
and animal). Use a map and compass
to find a buried treasure. Build a
real canvas shelter to protect you
from the elements. Cook your lunch
over a hobo stove. Finally, paddle
the Fanno creek wetlands in the
OES canoes scouting for waterfowl
and signs of the beaver.
Finish the day charting your
course and reflecting the
experience in handmade journals.
The day will end at 3pm.
This trip is ideal for students
between 8-11 years of age (and
parents too). Excursion to take
place between 6/21/15 and 8/21/15.
Group size is limited to 10.
