Flood victims cry
discrimination in relief
distribution
Appeal DDC
SYED ALI HAMDANI
Srinagar, Nov 17: The
inhabitants of Mehjoor
Nagar, Gurduwara Lane,
Ram Bagh Payeen, Ram
Bagh Balla and Nati Pora
Monday complained that
the Revenue officials have
resorted to discrimination
in distribution of relief
cheques.
The victims said the
concerned distributed
cheques of Rs 75000, Rs
12,500 and Rs 3,800 but that
instead of genuine cases
influential people were
given undue relief.
“There’s not only discrepancy in the distribution of cheques but the
amount sanctioned. Some of
the houses which were not
fully damaged have been
given Rs 75,000 whereas poor
people have been left to fend
for themselves,” the locals
said adding that the areas
fall in the Patwar Halqa Nursingh Ghar.
“As such we request
DDC Farooq Ahmad Shah to
kindly look into the matter
personally and direct the concerned Tehsildar/Patwaries
to release the relief amount
in favor of the left out flood
victims after proper verification of losses,” the locals said.

Khanday
Colony ,
Colony Woes
Nowgam
have complained that their locality
is reeling under darkness
for the past many days.
“We get electricity for
mere one to two hours in
24-hours which is too less
for us,” the locals said
adding the locality transformer was of low capacity.
They appealed the SE
Hashmat Qazi and the concerned Executive Engineer
Muhammad Yousuf Baba
to look into the matter.
Vivek reaches out to flood-hit
Says people of Kashmir very much part of India, Visits
Shafqat Rehabilitation Center
GK NEWS NETWORK
Srinagar, Nov 17: In a bid to
reach out the flood-hit people
of Kashmir, Bollywood
actor Vivek Oberoi Monday
arrived in the summer capital starting his humanitarian work from Shafqat Rehabilitation Center (SRC) for
specially-abled children at
Bemina highway even as he
distributed relief kits among
some flood-hit families.
The event was organized
by Voluntary Medicare Society and American Kashmir
Society at SRC. Oberoi interacted with the flood affected
families and spent some time
with specially-abled children.
The Bollywood actor
said there was a need to shed
the bias against the people
of Kashmir and northeast
India to give the youth from
these places a chance to connect with their counterparts
in rest of the country.
"We say that we are
ready to go to war but would
never let anyone take our
land as Kashmir is ours. We
have raised this slogan of
'Kashmir Hamara hai' (Kashmir is ours) so many times.
When will we raise the
slogan of 'Kashmiri Hamare
Hein (Kashmiris are ours)?
When will we shed that bias?
When would we say that the
people of northeast are ours?
It is not a matter of land but
people.
MUBASHIR KHAN/GK
"And when the people of
Kashmir also shed that bias,
then there will be a chance to
be one and a connection will
be created among the youth
of the country," Oberoi told
reporters. The 38-year-old
actor said the people of Kashmir have gone through a lot
of anger and pain and time
has come for a change.
The star of Sathiya fame
reached Bemina venue
around 3:30pm. Instead of
entering directly into the
hall where he was scheduled
to attend function, he walked
out of the main gate to get
a firsthand account of the
devastation in the neighborhood.
As he walked on Bemina
bypass, the bystanders took
out their mobile phones to
capture the moments.
Oberoi also had a look
on Hajj House from its main
gate. "Was this the flood
water level. We all need to
make collective efforts to
rebuild this paradise (Kashmir)," he told some people
while discussing water
levels with them. He was
courteous enough to allow
his fans to take pictures with
him.
At the SRC, he visited
various sections of the facility including classrooms and
equally took stock of damages. He also met the admitted
patients.
Talking to media persons on the sidelines of the
event, Oberio said he would
put his best efforts to help
in rebuilding the SRC infrastructure. The facility suffered losses worth millions
in the September floods.
He said that SRC is
“doing wonderful job. "I
met some of the patients who
have left reputed institutions
in Delhi. They are admitted
here and are happy."

2 months on, survey of losses awaited
Officials busy with election preparedness, victims say
GK CITY REPORTER
Srinagar, Nov 17: Over
two months on since the
floods hit Srinagar on
September 6, the authorities have failed to undertake survey of looses in
many affected areas, the
victims said.
The residents of
Kani Kadal said till now
no Revenue official visited the flood affected
houses in the locality.
“We have been told that
the concerned officials
have been formulating
list in some closed door
meetings having no
knowledge of the ground
situation,” said the delegation.
Masood Ahmed of
Karan Nagar said the
ground floor of his house
was badly damaged in the
floods but that till now
no official has visited his
house for survey of losses.
“Till now we have already
repaired some walls as
otherwise living in such
damaged house would have
been impossible,” he said.
The residents of
Nowgam said survey of
many houses was pending. The flood-hit inhabitants of areas like Baghwan
Pora Pir Bagh said nobody
from police or civil administration has bothered to
make survey of losses in
the locality. “Residents
of adjoining areas like
Humhama have even been
granted relief cheques
whereas the survey of
our area is awaited,” said
Farooq Ahmed a local.
A senior official in
Revenue department said
the administration was
busy with election related
arrangements. “The same
staff is into survey of losses
and the election duty, managing two tasks at a time is
impossible. Moreover election preparedness has to be
the priority,” he said.
