Longmire, aka "Morbid" America Means What does America mean? America means to fall in love, like kissing a girl for the first time. It means that your family is with you every day, and the winter days just feel like May. Do you hear it? It's the sound of food calling us. Another meaning of America! To me, America has enough love for everyone. Do not make her choose. Our nation has so much to offer, and the love she has is loose. -Elie Muller Justin Drew Bieber I can remember it like it was yesterday, when that brownish-blonde haired boy stole my heart, singing "aye, aye, aye" in his gray hoodie throwing a party at Usher House, it made me curious on who was this brownish-blonde haired boy, he was cute, got on my computer and looked him up on youtube, he sang songs like "you got it bad" and other songs like "with you" by Chris Brown, I was amazed at how much talent this boy had, and everywhere I went I heard his first single one time, then he released another single called "one less lonely girl" and I knew this Canadian pop star stole my heart, but I didn't know that it would take over my whole life, now I buy his cd's, t-shirts, wanting his concert tickets I'm so hooked on this boy, I never knew Justin Drew Bieber would become not only my hero but inspire me so much -Monique Washington Smile There are so many reasons to smile Good as well as bad Smile Even though you feel as if the world is on your shoulders Smile Even when your heart is steadily breaking into a thousand pieces Smile Even if the ones you love desert you Smile Even if it kills you because they are watching, waiting for a tear Smile Because between every letter & every word They see only what you deem them to see And in total privacy you can later allow the tears to flow The heartache to pour The utter misery to spill from your very being Yet all they saw was your smile Smile To spite the world And all of the doubters and haters Smile Because you've made it —LaTavia Davis American I Am American I am I am free to be me free to choose my own path free to choose my own destiny the person I am, who I become American I am I am free to love free to make my own choices free to not be brought down by the man American I am I am American living in a world with contradiction, judgment, hate, and non-acceptance, but I am free to not listen to those words of hate and disgrace but free to live my life as an individual and go down my own road without hearing the voices of society but only hearing one voice MY VOICE American I am -Dejah Williams American Essay What it mean to be an American to me? I say being an American is about freedom; the freedom to make our own choices. It is also about the freedom to be able to question authority. I think it's also about being fair. Threat others the way you want to be treated. An American is not willing to look down on others because the color of their skin or they're religion. An American is wise about how to use their freedom and fairness. -Gabriel Cooper Loving You The moment when you first talked to me. The moment when you gave me that first hug. The cute moment when without asking me you just kissed me. That one day that all I could of do was think about you. The moment when I began to feel butterflies every time you talked to me. The moment when you asked to be your girlfriend I couldn't stop and think about it but just say yes. The time when your ex tried to get between us but instead you chose me. The moment when everything I wanted to do was to be with you and keep loving you, and for you to always stay by my side. Loving you is dangerous but I can't make it stop, all I know is that "I Love You" -Anonymous An American Hero A long time ago, a boy named Craig was fighting with a girl named Cloudy. They were fighting about American heroes. Blood was all over the sidewalks because they were fistfighting during the argument. All of a sudden, a teacher named Ms. Sunshine said: "Stop! American heroes do not fight with their fists. In fact, American heroes are nonviolent. What is going on here?" Craig said, "I told Cloudy that American heroes are real, but she didn't listen." Cloudy replied, "That's because all heroes need capes like Batman." "That's not true," yelled Ms. Sunshine with rage. "What about George Washington? He helped us to get revenge against Great Britain in 1776." Craig asked: "Did Abraham Lincoln stop slavery in 1865?" Ms. Sunshine replied: "Yes, he did! Of course, many free blacks had to do a lot of fighting for that to happen." Cloudy angrily replied: "What is the point on all of this?!" Craig responded: "The point is that American heroes help us do a lot of things." Ms. Sunshine added: "Also, you should both know that nobody should use violence for anything, not even heroes." Cloudy and Craig apologized to each other, and they've also thanked Ms. Sunshine. At that moment, they turned around and walked home. When Cloudy got home, she and Craig hugged each other good night. As Cloudy walked to her house, Craig said to himself: "Ms. Sunshine is an American hero." -Elie Muller LaTaviaisms 1 Doing what you love may not be something that'll keep you financially stable (or legal), so choose something similar, or something that makes good money and do what you love as a hobby. II As long as no one is putting their hands on you, let them say whatever they want, as long as they stay out of your personal space. Ill If you're as bad as you say you are (or think you are) you shouldn't have to advertise it every day. IV Don't chose (or try to take) what's not yours (or what you can't have); if you wait it just might come to you and if not, get over it. V Teenage love is for the idiotic. Being an American: A Mexican-American Perspective Most people don't see eye to eye. Everybody thinks differently, so walk in someone's shoes for a day. I have grown up as a Mexican American; both my parents were born in Mexico, but they had the documents stating they could live in the Unites States. I am typical in several ways: I was born on the far south side of Chicago, in the Roseland community by the "Mexican side" where everything was always separated. I didn't have a choice; I personally don't like Roseland because of the gangs. We all live in the United States, but we don't all get along. The constitution is a piece of paper that was written and signed on September 17,1787, over 200 hundred years ago, stating that we would be free with conditions. Nothing in that document said anything about being treated badly because someone is brown, black, yellow, purple, old, and new. Why is it this country just became culturally diverse not too long ago? How is it that someone gets killed walking out their house, or that a baby gets killed for even laughing? People with chinky eyes are automatically Chinese, people who speak Spanish are automatically Mexicans, Muslims are automatically Arab, and whites are automatically rich. In America, people are supposed to be treated equally, so why is it that two people of the same sex can't be married? Being an American means so much, and yet, people don't realize it. It's the government's fault why this country is so chaotic, and yet they gave us our freedom. Being an American; that I can't do anything about. -Dinora Gonzalez First Two Weeks I used to live in Minnesota but now I live in Chicago it all started when I came home from school just like any other day but when I got home this day this day was different something changed it was a weird vibe my mom was smiling more than she ever have my brother and sister was the same but something was still different. "Magical, sit down," my mother said. "Urn ok". "What happed at school today"? I laughed a bit and said like I always say: "Same old same old." "Mmm, I got something I want to tell you ... we are moving." "Ok where?" "Chicago yay," she said. My tummy felt like I'd been punched in it a thousand times my eyes felt like a waterfalls my heart was beating so loud to where I could hear it in my ears. "NO! This is a joke right? Right?!" "Why would this be a joke? I thought you'd be happy." "Mom, my whole life is here, friends, family, home. I mean you just can't take that away from me." "Look, I am the mom you the kid I say what it is not you!" "Yep ok." I went in to my room and shut my door. I was thinking all that day about what she said (we're moving"). It replayed like a movie I wanted to run away. The next day was so different I didn't sit by people nor talk to people but then my sort of kind of best friend asked me, "Ok girl, what sup with you?" I said with the saddest voice in the world, "I am moving." "Urn where?" "Chicago." "WHAT! So you not gone be here for my birthday?" I couldn't even look her in the eyes it seemed to her like I was being cold. "Nope," I said "Fine, forgets you then." She walked back to her seat and sat down and didn't speak to me the rest of the day. When I got to the hall everyone started hugging me and saying don't leave. "Who told you guys?" I asked someone. "Erianna," someone said. "Oh... well yes I am moving but I'll come back and visit sometimes." Close to the end of the day the office told me, "Well good luck!" and I said "thank you." When I got home we started to pack up our stuff we were moving I could not believe it but it was true I walked into the rooms for the last time then it was a long ride to Chicago but I was sleep for most of it. When we got to Chicago it was different but my mom has a boyfriend and well we already met his family then I started to go to a whole new school it was weird but I kind of liked it anyway but yeah I hope tomorrow is better now I'm sitting here writing this story well bye. -Magical Lyric Fletcher Individualism The desire for revenge is unbearable, but is it necessary to retaliate? Relationships Some people can't find a way to show friendship, and so they use aggressive actions to represent that bond. -Lovinsky Joseph Mickle Maxim 1 You work hard to get something but when you get it you don't work hard to keep it. Mickle Maxim 2 You lose money chasing girls but never lose girls chasing money. -Antwon Mickle What does it mean to be an American? Every day, there is one question that really makes me feel confused. "What does it mean to be an American?" Whenever I hear this question, I start to think about everyone smiling. Then, I start to wonder why everyone is smiling. This leads me to ask the following questions. "What is going on here in America?" "Have we gone crazy?" Then, I look at how many friends that they have. At the same time, I've looked at my family, while meeting new people. All of this has made me think of an answer to the previous questions. Being an American means to be nice to everybody. It also means to love everyone that you know. The world is a strange place because of all of the wars. However, we will be fine as long as we love each other and never argue. To sum up this essay, America is love. Without love, America will just be another horrible country in fear. I do not want to live in a country of fear. That would tear my entire family to pieces of rocks, and I don't like it one bit. Let's just love one another! It's the only thing that we have now. -Elie Muller Just Some of the Sayings in the Bowen Community, Circa 2013 ify" I 1 "you do too much" "I ain't for none" "youathot" "I ain't no lame" "swindle "aye brodie" "turn down for what?" Williams is a man of science that is trying to make a pill to help people lose weight. All of a sudden, he noticed that something was missing from his life. Dr. E. Williams: I'm happy that I'm successful, but something's missing. (Dr. Craig, Dr. E. William's assistant who recently got married; enters the lab) Dr. Craig: Good evening, Dr. E. Williams! What seems to be the problem? Dr. E. Williams: I need somebody that I can call a lab partner. Dr. Craig: What you need to do is to build a Love Machine. It can help you get a lab partner for your weight loss invention. Dr. E. Williams: Great Idea! Your parents must be smart robots! Dr. Craig: I get that comment every night! Narrator: As Dr. Craig leaves the Lab, Dr. E. Williams begins to work on the Love Machine. End of Scene 1 Scene 2 Setting: The Next Day in the University of Chicago's Science Lab Dr. E. Williams: I've done it! The Love Machine has been invented! I hope that my lab partner will come out right away! I don't how it will work, but I'm ready for the results. Here goes nothing! Narrator: Dr. E. William pushes a button on the Machine, but a lab partner did not appear. Dr. E. Williams: (sadly) My Machine has failed! What am I going to do now? Dr. Craig: (enters through the door as he says) Good Morning, Boss! What happened over here? Dr. E. Williams: What happened?! The Love Machine failed, and it's your entire fault! Dr. Craig: I wanted you to build it, but t didn't say that it would work right away. Dr. E. Williams: That's it! You're about to get fired! (Dr. E. Williams chases Dr. Craig all over the Lab when Nurse Diana came out of the machine from its bottle) Nurse Diana: Hi! I'm Nurse Diana, and you must be Dr. E. Williams! Dr. E. Williams: Oh, Have Mercy! Dr. Craig: I told you so! End of Scene 2 Scene 3 Narrator: Later that night, Dr. E. Williams and Nurse Diana were coming up with ideas for weight loss inventions. Dr. E. Williams: I thought that we should create something that will help everybody lose weight. However, I haven't come up with anything huge yet. I'm thinking of doing some kind of pill. Nurse Diana: That's great! Let's make it so that nobody would have to starve themselves. I don't like to lose my appetite. Dr. E. Williams: I don't want that for me, either! (Quietly) Oh, My! She's nice and so smart! Where has she been all of my life?! Nurse Diana: I only said that because I'm hungry! (To herself) He's a smart and cute Man! Did I mention that he's kind and funny? I need him in my life! Dr. E. Williams: I should put flowers in the Lab! What do you think? Nurse Diana: Sweet! That should help us think! End of Scene 3 Scene 4 Narrator: A few days later, Dr. E. Williams and Nurse Diana's "Big Weight Loss" pill was sold to every person in the entire planet. While everything was sold out in 40 seconds, Nurse Diana and Dr. E. Williams were getting millions of dollars an hour. Dr. E. Williams: We make a pretty good team, Nurse Diana! Nurse Diana: I second that emotion, Dr. E. Williams! I do have something to get off my chest, though. Dr. E. Williams: What would that secret be? I'm starting to get nervous. Nurse Diana: I'm in love with you! Dr. E. Williams: That's funny, because I'm in love with you, too! Nurse Diana: That's interesting! I think that I want to kiss you now! Dr. E. Williams: I'm starting to get that feeling, too! (Dr. E. Williams and Nurse Diana kiss each other for 30 seconds.) Dr. E. Williams: That was so good! Nurse Diana: It feels just right! Dr. E. Williams: You don't think that we should.... Nurse Diana: Get Married?! Both: Yes! I do! Narrator: Later, at the weddingPriest Harvey: Do you both take each other to love and to hold forever until you go home with the Lord? Dr. E.Williams: I do! Nurse Diana: I do! Priest Harvey: By the power invested in me and everybody here in the school, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss each one another. (Dr. E. Williams and Nurse Diana kiss each other for 40 seconds.) Narrator: As they were both driven off by a limo driver, a big question was coming up from Dr. E. Williams' mind. Dr. E. Williams: Do you think that we should raise a family of our own? Nurse Diana: Yes, we should! Should we start now, or wait until later? Dr. E. Williams: Let's worry about it later! For right now, let's go to Los Angeles, California for our honeymoon. Narrator: And so, Dr. E. Williams and Nurse Diana went on their honeymoon in Los Angeles, California. As for Dr. Craig, he promised to never build anything silly ever again. Then again, he never fulfilled any of his promises in his entire life. -Elie Muller Bowen Pillow Book Entry 1: Attending Bowen High School has been an interesting experience so far, and, finally, it's my last year here. As a senior I witnessed countless accomplishments, recognitions, and failures of the students over the past year. I could see those students grow everyday even after being recognized or disapproved of, and they learned from their mistakes and strived even harder to get to where they needed. Some of the students who struggled in being accepted by others found ways to be accepted by changing their styles and attitudes or by meeting me. Entry 2: Through my senior year I was still very quiet and avoided confrontations with many people, but by meeting new friends and reconnecting with past ones, I have now become more open. Sharing my experiences with my friends and experiencing new ones, I grew as an individual who is now recognized and well known. When I present myself to friends, they show their friendship by smiling back at me or yelling my name, and it comforts me to have them as friends. However, some friends I hung out with either gave up on school or fell into the wrong crowds. But that's life and you have to learn from your mistakes. Entry 3: Witnessing students cause problems for others has caused me to be wary about trusting others, but not just me; it has passed on to other students and teachers as well. This has caused us to have to build and earn the trust of people because of others' mistakes. Most friendships now are not connected based on honesty or kindness but on affiliation and somewhat ethnicities of others they think they share connections with. I've seen some of my old friends get torn apart by others who they thought were truly their friends, and now they are lonely because of this. Entry 4: Teachers I've met this year have now shown more focus on rules and evaluations that cause them to be strict, sometimes uncalled for ways. This has effectively created greater respect towards them, but also causes students to avoid teachers more often because of intensive work. Despite this change I have become even closer to teachers I once knew and met this year, as wel! as be viewed as a student who they wish other students were more like. Having that connection with some teachers can benefit you in ways that can get you out of tight spots and places you in better situations. Entry 5: Overall, my experience up until now has been worth it as I've learned many new things that will aid me in my life. Bowen has its ups and downs, but what doesn't? Being disciplined to enter a world beyond high school should be a blessing as there is no one else to teach us this rarity because of the cycle of labor. Going to school may be a drag sometimes; however, it is where we build our character, meet lifetime friends, share great experiences, and basically grow as individuals. I enjoy my time here and do all I can to experience the most I can while I'm here, so I will continue to pursue my dreams and goals as a game designer by making sure f succeed in school and graduate with flying colors. -tavinsky Joseph I Love You They say they love you, just to then hate you. They hold your hand in public, just to kiss another girl behind closed doors. Why say! love you when you're lying in their face? Why hold hands when you know you love someone else?—when she know you're gonna want her back but she doesn't love you anymore. -Anonymous A Well-Blended Family One-Act Play Characters: Lina, little sister Michelle, big sister Jacqueline, Michelle's mother John, Una's father Scene 1 (scene starts with Jacqueline waking the girls up for school) Jacqueline: Lina! Michelle! Get up, girls! Time to get ready for school! Come on, girls, get up and get ready so you can eat breakfast! Lina: Okay, Mom! Michelle: K, Mom! (John comes downstairs) John: Good morning, honey, how are you? Jacqueline: I'm good. How are you? John: Good. Got a busy day ahead of me at the office, so I'm gonna go head and leave. (John gives Jacqueline a kiss on the cheek, grabs his cup of coffee and heads out the door) Jacqueline: All right, honey, bye. Love you. John: (yelling from the car) Give the girls a kiss for me and tell them I said bye. Jacqueline: Come on, girls, let's go. We're running late! (The girls come downstairs) Jacqueline: Hurry up and eat so we can go. Lina: Thanks, Mom. Breakfast was good. Michelle: Yeah. Thanks, Mom. Jacqueline: You're welcome, girls. Now get you things so we can go. (Everyone gets their things and gets in the car. Jacqueline drops Una off at school first) Jacqueline: Bye, Una, have a good day. Love you. Una: Bye, Mommy. Michelle: I don't see why we had to move with John and his daughter and leave everything we had behind. Jacqueline: Well it was time for a new start, honey, and plus it's not so bad out here. Michelle: Yeah, but it's not the same as it was back home. (Pulls up to Michelle's school) Jacqueline: Please just give them a chance, Michelle. Love you and have a good day. Michelle: Yeah, Mom, whatever. Jacqueline: Bye. I've see you at home. (Jacqueline drives to work) Scene 2: (At three in the afternoon, the girls are now getting off the bus) Lina: Hey Michelle! How was your day? Michelle: Leave me alone, Lina. Lina: I don't see why you gotta be so mean to me, Michelle. I didn't do anything to you! Michelle: Just leave me alone, okay! Lina: Fine! You big loser. (The girls enter the house) Lina: I'm hungry. Michelle: So go for something to eat then. Lina: You know I can't do it by myself. I'm too little. Michelle: Well too bad. (Michelle goes upstairs and shuts her door) Lina: Michelle, I'm hungry! Michelle: So what? I don't care!!! Lina: I hate you!!! (John walks in just as Una's screaming) John: Hey, what's all screaming and yelling about? Lina: Michelle won't fix me a snack and I'm hungry. John: Honey, it's all right. I'll fix you something to eat. You got any homework? Lina: Thank you, Daddy, and no, no homework today. John: All right, well why don't you go on upstairs and get cleaned up. Lina: Okay, Daddy. (Lina goes upstairs and washes up as Jacqueline arrives at home) Jacqueline: Hey, honey, how are you? John: Good. Are you just now getting off work? Jacqueline: Yes, and I've had a long day and I'm really tired. Are the girls home? John: Yeah. They are fighting again. Jacqueline: About what? John: Well, Lina wanted a snack and Michelle didn't fix her one. Jacqueline: I swear I don't know what it is with that girl. I have told her over and over again to at least try to get along with Lina, but I just can't seem to get through to her. John: Well it just takes time, but she'll come around. I know it. Jacqueline: Well I hope so. John: She will. Just give it time. Jacqueline: All right. Well I'm gonna go upstairs and talk to the girls. John: All right. Dinner will be ready in a few. Jacqueline: Okay! Scene 3: (Jacqueline knocks on Michelle's door) Jacqueline: Hey, honey. What's up? How are you? Michelle: I'm good. How are you, Mom? Jacqueline: I'm good. So John told me that you and Lina had an argument today. Michelle: Yes we did. I don't see why I have to take care of her and feed her when she's not even my daughter. She's John's daughter, not mine. Jacqueline: True, I understand that but we're a family now and you're gonna have to get used to her being your little sister, Michelle. Michelle: All right, Mom. I'll try. (Jacqueline gives Michelle a hug) Jacqueline: Dinner's almost ready, so wash up and come downstairs. Michelle: Okay, Mom. Jacqueline: I'm going to say hi to Lina now. (Knocks on Una's door) Jacqueline: Hey, Lina. How are you, baby? Lina: Good morning. How are you? Jacqueline: I'm good, honey. How was school? Lina: It was good, Mommy. I had a really good day with all my friends. Jacqueline: Good. Well Dad's making dinner, so wash your hands and come downstairs. Lina: Okay! John: Girls, dinner is ready. Come eat! (Everybody comes down to eat) Scene 4: Lina: What's for dinner, Daddy? John: Chicken tacos. Lina: Yea! That's my favorite. Michelle: Smells good. John: Thanks. Jacqueline: Smells delicious, hon. John: Thanks, babe. Well let's sit down and eat. (Everybody sits down, fixes their plate, and begins to eat) John: So how was everybody's day? Everybody: Good! John: Well that's good. So Lina and Michelle, I have a nice weekend planned for the three of us. Michelle: Cool. Where we going? John: To a water park. Lina: Really! I love water parks. Yea! I'm so excited. John: It should be fun. Michelle: Hey, Lina. I'm sorry about earlier. Lina: It's okay. I forgive you. Scene 5: John: Well we're here, guys. Michelle: Wow, this is huge. Lina: Dad, look at all the rides. John: Well, guys, let's go inside. (All walk inside) John: Our rooms are upstairs. Michelle: Can we go swimming yet? John: Yes, go ahead. But be careful and keep an eye on your sister. Girls: Okay! Michelle: Come one, Una. Let's go! (John calls Jacqueline) Jacqueline: Hey, how's everything? John: Good. I think the girls are getting along now. Jacqueline: Really! That's good. John: Yeah, well I love. Jacqueline: Love you too. Bye. John: Bye. Michelle: You having fun, Lina? Lina: Yes. I'm glad you came. Michelle: Yeah, me too. I'm sorry for being mean to you. I promise I'll be nicer to you. Lina: I love you. Michelle: I love you too.
