Upcoming events
Plan to be at these events for a great time. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people or spend time with old
friends. Don’t have a ride? I’m sure someone has a seat. Don’t forget your camera!
NOTE: PLEASE CHECK THE CLUB CALENDAR FOR UPDATES
October 2016
ADOPT-A-RANCH
 Oct 8 at 8:30 AM. Meet at the southwest corner of Houghton & I-10.
 Run Leader: Rheal Tetreault (682-0273)
 Trail Rating: Not Given
 Destination: Deer Creek Ranch
We will make our way to Willcox and head north from there. When we get to the primitive camping area, we set up camp
and have lunch. If the rancher has any work for us, we will go out and do that. In the past we have moved rock to areas
that were eroding to help slow the flow of water. After the work we head back to camp and enjoy the evening. You don't
have to camp. The trip can be made in a day. We just prefer to do it in two. Bring your work gloves and camping gear if
staying overnight.
RED ROCK CANYON
 Oct 15 at 8:30 AM. Meet at the southwest corner of I-10 and Houghton.
 Trail Rating: 4.5 HARD
According to the run calendar as of 10/3, “More info to follow.” The meeting announcement indicated that the group
would be *leaving* the meeting point at 8:30 AM.
ASA4WDC LAND WORK RUN
 Oct 22 at 7:30 AM. Meet at the Bashas’ in Catalina (Oracle Road and Golder Ranch).
 Run Leader: Rheal Tetreault (682-0273)
 Trail Rating: Not Given.
 Destination: The ASA4WDC acreage near Florence
We will be starting some work on the ASA property. The first thing on our agenda is to remove the Teddy Bear Cholla
from the majority of the parcel. It will remain along the borders as a buffer. We will knock it down and make piles for a
later burn. We will need a few tractors, rakes, shovels and gloves.
November 2016
4 PEAKS CLEANUP AND ASA4WDC QUARTERLY
 Nov 5 at 7:30 AM. (Meeting location not specified)
 Run Leader: Rheal Tetreault (682-0273)
 Trail Rating: Not Given
 Destination: 4 Peaks area north of Phoenix
CopperState 4 Wheelers put together the 4 Peaks Cleanup every year. They start at 7:30, provide a lunch and do a couple of raffles. 4 Peaks is located north of the Phoenix Metro area along Highway 87 (toward Payson) about 10 miles
past Fountain Hills. The ASA Quarterly is on Sunday in the staging area for the cleanup.
RICE PEAK WORK RUN
 Nov 19 at 8:30 AM. Meet at the Bashas’ in Catalina (Oracle Road and Golder Ranch).

Upcoming events (Cont’d.)
 Destination: Rice Peak
On our last work run here, we started a repair on the south entrance road. The fence was installed and some material
was put in the hole. We will continue to fill in the hole against the fence. Bring your lunch, work gloves, shovels and 5gallon buckets. I anticipate working for an hour or so; then we will continue on the road up to the peak and out the north
entrance.
POST-THANKSGIVING RUN
 Nov 25 (Time and location not specified)
 Run Leader: Bob Hval
 Trail Rating: Not Given
 Destination: Ironwood Forest National Monument
[Editor’s Note: This run is not yet on the club’s calendar. No additional information is available.]
December 2016

 Dec 17 at 8:30 AM. Meet at the Bashas’ in Catalina (Oracle Road and Golder Ranch).
 Run Leader: Rheal Tetreault (682-0273)
 Trail Rating: 4
 Destination: Charouleau Gap
As usual we have road work to do. Bring your gloves, 5-gallon buckets, shovels and wire cutters. Don't forget your lunch.
Expect to work on a repair for an hour or so, then we will continue on the road.
Have an idea for a run?
Do you have an idea but don’t want to lead a trip, or you don’t know the route? Don’t worry! Just contact a Board member with your ideas.
Please remember these trips usually are day trips which means to bring plenty of water.

Hi from Bethany Beach, DE. Below is the PP report through Sat, 9/17 and the Redington Pass Night Run. We’ll be in El
Paso on the 27th thus not able to attend the meeting.
As always, if you find that your totals don’t agree with mine, please send me an email ([email protected]) with
what you believe needs to be changed. I’m still looking for your guess of the date when our YTD total participants will go
over 1000. We’re getting close….938 as of this report. So far I have just one entry! In order to conserve space I’ve only
included totals for those members who have earned points this year.

Run Reports
Moab, Utah—and Side Trips (8/18-8/27 Phil David)
[Editor’s Note: Photos from individual runs follow this summary.]
During the 10 days the group was in the Moab area there were a total of 15 runs.
Thursday 8/17 – Nichole Thilges led a run with Mike Collins to Chicken Corners. They both noted that the
trail over Hurrah Pass seemed to be in good condition despite the rain that occurred early in the month.
Larry Narcus led a similar run on Sunday to Catacomb Rock and also noted the conditions were good.
Friday 8/19 – Phil David led 8 on a run from camp through the upper half of Kane Creek, this part of the trail is a 4 rating.
The lower half had been washed out and was impassible. Down a steep decent Phil took a line that dropped off a 4 foot
ledge hit a hole at the bottom of the ledge and laid the Jeep over on its right side. No major damage except for a bent
header bar in the roll bar assembly. He made it back to camp without incident.
Saturday 8/20 – Phil David led a group of 10 on the Poison Spider trail, rate this trail as a 4. The trail had several spots of
wet sand that made it interesting. Lockers were needed in many spots. All in the group decided to do the V-Notch at the
top of the trail, fun to watch several of the Jeeps get serious air. Great weather this day and plenty of sun.
Sunday 8/21 – Mike Collins led a group of 4 on the 4+ rated Pickle/Mashed Potatoes run. Mike was the only one to make
it up the first obstacle, The Pickle; the rest were strapped up. The next 2 challenges, Spicy Pickle and Jalapeno Pickle
were all made with a fine eye for the line. The group had lunch at the top, Mashed Potatoes area and continued back to
camp.
Sunday 8/21 – Phil David led a total of 3 Jeeps on Behind the Rocks. We came in the trail from the Pritchett Canyon side
and the first major obstacle was UP-Chuck which 2 of the Jeeps went down; the other Jeep took a multiple ledge route.
At the bottom we all decided to take that by-pass to High Dive rather than try to go up it. A very interesting trail with plenty of challenges.
Monday 8/22 – Phil led 9 Jeeps and 4 guests on the trip to Mesa Verde National Park just east of Cortez, Colorado. A
great day and beautiful weather. We all spent time at the visitors’ center and then most went on two of the guided tours
of the ruins. This is must-see for anyone interested in the history of the west and its Indian settlements. After the tours
we retreated to the hotel for the first real hot shower of the week and later enjoyed a great meal at one of the local restaurants.
Tuesday 8/23 – Phil led the group from Cortez to Telluride for the start of the Imogene Pass run. The drizzle started as
soon as we got to Telluride and started on the trail. The first half mile of the trail we encountered many hikers and some
cyclists. We noticed that many of the aspen trees on the way up had carvings and dates, some back to the mid-60s. As
we inched up the trail it got colder and we started to encounter snow. We stopped for lunch and brief break at the famous
Tom Boy mine, which at one time was the highest-elevation operating mine in the northern hemisphere. The mine closed
in the early 1920s after producing millions in gold, silver and other ores. We reached the summit about 1:00 (13081 feet)
and encountered blowing snow and very windy cold conditions. We made a quick exit towards Ouray and mines in the
Savage Basin area. We made a couple of stops to check out several old mines and then proceeded on to Ouray. Despite
the rain and cold at the summit everyone had a great time.
Wednesday 8/24 – Phil led the group towards the start of the Black Bear Pass trail. There is a gradual ascent up the
mountain to an elevation of about 12,000 feet over many switchbacks. The trail then descends down toward Telluride
which can be seen in the distance some 5,000 feet below. This part of the trail takes complete attention as there are
many tight switchbacks and one off-camber spot that leans you toward a 50’ drop into a rushing stream. Once through
the tight spots you can really enjoy the beauty of this historic ski/vacation town. Most of us stopped for a quick lunch and
headed back over the 130 miles to Moab. Put this one on your bucket list.
Thursday 8/25 – Mike Collins led 3 Jeeps on the 4.0 Gold Bar Rim trail. This is a scenic trail with plenty of obstacles that
ends at the overlook to highway 191; then the trail becomes the Gold Spike trail and leads to the Golden Crack. On the
return the waterfall obstacle was easily made after Mike found the perfect line. All enjoyed the run and the challenge.
Thursday 8/25 – Phil David led 3 Jeeps on the 4+ Rusty Nail Trail. We split off from Mike’s group at the intersection of
the 2 trails. This trail has a serious gatekeeper obstacle, actually 2, that if you make it you are somewhat committed. Phil

made the first 2 obstacles and winched up a third to anchor for the other Jeeps. Andy Sacio pulled up the 3rd Jeep. We
all made it through the Wall with a little spotting and proceeded to the No Left Turn, which is exactly that, this is maximum test of articulation. A great run and we met up with Mike at the Golden Crack and followed his group back Golden
Spike and Gold Bar Rim.
Friday 8/26 – Phil led Andy Sacio and Leo O’Campo on another shot at Behind the Rocks. This time we would have
gone down the famous High Dive but again decided to bypass it. Andy and Leo made quick work out of Up-Chuck after
they found the right line. We proceeded to Hummer Hill and after getting lost for a while we found the infamous White
Knuckle Hill. The last obstacle before White Knuckle commits you to the beast, so we decided to walk it. A 7-foot vertical
drop was more than any of us wanted to deal with so we left with tails between our legs to camp and called it a day.
Friday 8/26 – Paul Siskind led the 4+ Moab Rim trail. This is a must if wheeling in Moab. All made it up Devils Crack with
a little effort and some help. The Z Turn presents a challenge but all found the line both going and coming with no incidents. At the top the group stopped for a scenic view of Moab before making the return trip down.
Saturday 8/27 – Nichole Thilges led the Top of The World Trail. This is a scenic trail that requires clearance and 1 locker.
It is a short but challenging trail with some of the best views of Moab and the surrounding area.
Larry Narcus led 2 runs on Saturday and Sunday. He and his group visited Shaffer Canyon, Gemini Bridges and the Hurrah Pass/Catacomb Rock area off the Kane Creek trail.

Guajolote Flat & Soldier Basin (9/17 Jim Molter)
Saturday morning (Sept. 17) at 8:30, nine vehicles left the Longhorn Grill parking lot and headed south.
We were heading to the trail head to Guajolote Flat which is on FR4695 off of Duquesne Road. After a
short distance we stopped to air down. The
trip up to the flat passes the Four Metals
Mine on a steep rocky switchback road. Arriving at the top we crossed the flat passing
the Paymaster Mine on our way down to Harshaw Road.
Knowing there was not a good lunch spot in Soldier Basin,
we drove to Harshaw Cemetery and had lunch under a
large Sycamore Tree.
After lunch we backtracked to FR4698 and headed up into
Soldier Basin. We first stopped at the stone line cabin then
to the remains of the stone ranch house. We returned to
Harshaw Road and started toward Patagonia. At Flux Canyon Road some of the group decided to take that road back
to Highway 82 and home. A mining company is doing a lot
of test drilling along the canyon road and it wasn't long before we were stopped by a security guard who told us the
road was closed to the public and the gate was locked in the direction we were heading. Yet another road closed to the
public by the mining companies. All in all a great day of wheeling.

Changing a Flat Made Easier
Article and Photos by Paul Siskind
Sooner or later we all experience flat tires
out on the trail. On stock vehicles the tire
and wheel is not too heavy, but on modified
vehicles with 35" or 37" tires (or larger) they
can be darn heavy. My 35" wheels with
beadlocks can be hard to lift onto the spare
rack even with a helper. If you wheel alone
or without help to lift the flat tire back up, I
have a little trick that can make it easier. I
found a tri-fold ATV ramp at Harbor Freight
that folds flat and allows you to roll the
wheel up to bumper height, then spin the tire
90 degrees and shove it onto the lugs. It
also works to remove the tire from the rack if
necessary. The ramp also works for loading
a dirt bike or ATV if you buy 2.

Editor’s Corner
I noted last time that September might be a quiet month—it turned out not so quiet, after all. Two of our club m\embers
led non-Trail Dust Days-related runs; you can see photos and write-ups elsewhere in this issue. Also in the “Run Reports” section, you’ll find a lot of great photos from the trip to Moab and Colorado back in August. I hope you enjoy them!
If you want more, go to “The Photo Gallery” on the club’s website and look at Albums 158, 159 and 161 for Moab & Colorado, and Albums 162 & 163 for the local runs.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It’s time to think about the 2016 Male and Female 4-Wheeler of the Year, and the 2016 Run of the
Year. If you have suggestions for any or all of these categories, please send it/them to Chris Richardson (email:
[email protected]). THIS IS NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST, so please include your reason for the nomination!
Why do you believe this person / run should be honored?
Be prepared for a HUGE October issue! Trail Dust Days will be prominently featured! Congratulations to all the award
winners and to the winners of the FOUR major prizes! Kevin Fitzgerald outdid himself this year and I congratulate him on
a job well done! THANK YOU, Kevin!
I won’t be at the October meeting due to international travel. As a result, y’all get an extension of the submission deadline for items to be included in the October newsletter. Please have everything in by November 2; I’ll begin work on the
October issue on November 3.
