family member and would like to join the registry

Join the marrow registry.
You could be the one to save a life.
Am I eligible to join the registry?
How else can I help?
On any given day, thousands of men, women,
and children are searching for a life-saving donor.
These are people who have been diagnosed with
leukemia, anemia, lymphoma or another lifethreatening blood disease that requires treatment
with a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, in
which cells from a healthy donor are transplanted
into a patient. About 30 percent of patients will find
a matching donor within their family; the remaining
70 percent will need to search a worldwide registry
of unrelated donors for a “miracle match.”
To join the registry, you need to be:
− Between the ages of 18-60
− Willing to donate to any patient in need
− Able to meet certain health guidelines
In addition to joining the marrow donor registry,
there are other ways you can get involved:
Operated by the National Marrow Donor Program
(NMDP), the Be The Match Registry® is the
largest, most diverse marrow donor registry in the
world. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a fully
accredited member of the NMDP and is committed
to growing and diversifying the registry to help
more patients get the transplants they need. By
joining the registry, you could be the one to save
a life.
On the cover: The process to join the registry is simple, involving
swabbing the inside of your cheek to collect a sample of cells. Your
commitment is much greater though: it can mean the difference
between life and death for the patient who needs a donor.

Volunteer. We need volunteers to assist with donor
registration drives on days, evenings and weekends.
Volunteers are also able to help educate the public
and spread the word about the opportunity to
save a life.
Donating platelets. Platelets are the clotting
agents of the blood. Many patients receive platelet
transfusions as part of their treatment. If you donate
platelets three times at the Kraft Family Blood Donor
Center at Dana-Farber, you are then invited to join
the Be The Match Registry, if you’d like to register
as a potential donor. To learn more about the need

Donate blood or host a blood drive. Brigham and
Women’s Hospital Blood Donor Center collects
whole blood and has a mobile unit that can come
to your school, business, or other community
