She has already proven herself to be hardworking, imaginative and insightful- seeing to many things that will continue to maintain and improve our organization. A major endeavor for the past few years has been the cultivation of our website, in particular updating and maintaining Directory information. This year the Board decided not to send out a hard copy version of the Directory, since the website availability makes it possible to download and copy. Simply go to thehpta.com and click on Membership to find the complete Directory. Not only do we save paper, and expense, but time as well, especially when new members join in the middle of the year or changes are requested. Our website chair, Tammy Burks, can easily delete or add as needed. Other activities this year include the following: th February 14 , The HPTA sponsored the first "Formal Recital" for Intermediate to advanced students held in Orvis Auditorium. Teachers who entered students were Joanna Fan, Deborah Lee, Bichuan Li, Carol Nakaganeku, Janice Trubitt, Wendy Yamashita and Yuka Yahagi. We owe a special "Mahalo" to Dr. Thomas Yee, who accompanied on second piano for the final number, the Tchaikovsky Concerto #1. We also used this opportunity to raise funds for the annual UH benefit Scholarship. Be watching for more information regarding fundraising in the near future. Previous to the New Year, the HPTA sponsored a Concerto Competition and the winner, Jeremy Lee, student of Bichuan Li, won the opportunity to perform the Chopin E minor Concerto with the Hawaii Festival Orchestra on December th 12 at the Calvary Episcopal Church. Continuing back in time, in October, 2015, the HPTA presented a free stage makeup work shop at Neiman Marcus, held in the Mermaid Room, where a professional makeup artist provided a demonstration and also individual makeovers and unique take home gifts for all who attended. We had a great turnout of teachers and students, and lots of fun! In August 2015 we held the annual meeting at the Waialae Country Club, and our website Chair, Tammy Burks, gave a PowerPoint presentation to show how the site is developing and how it will look in the near future. More information will go out as the year progresses. th On April 19 , 2015, the HPTA presented a workshop titled, "How To Handle Your Challenging Students". Once again there was a great turn out and much helpful information exchanged. Going into 2016, we are planning another important workshop on the topic of Piano Literature for all levels from beginner to advanced. The date and time will be sent to all members and the event will go up on the website as well. Finally, we are always RECRUTING! We need members to step up and get on the Board. Feel free to contact Deborah Lee or Yuka Yahagi if interested in a position on the Board, and we are happy to take questions and suggestions as well! This year promises to be a great one for the HPTA, as we continue to move forward with our website, and develop our Formal Recital program, and present workshops. All of this is done with our members in mind- the needs and interests of our teacher members and their students. We are all busy people, but we need to continue to come together to support one another in order to enhance our teaching skills and promote comradery. Piano practice and teaching can be very solitary endeavors, and so it is nice to know we have an organization that supports us and understands our unique situation. Yuka and I look forward to working together this year, and on behalf of the other Board members, Suzanne Machbitz, Jessica Choi, Tammy Burks, Joanna Fan, and Sam Adams, we wish to thank you all for your participation and ongoing support. We not only need your support, but welcome your feedback as well throughout the year. The HPTA belongs to all its members. We hope to see each one of you throughout the year. With Warmest Aloha, Debbie and Yuka History In 1949, Cecil Allison proposed the formation of a music teachers’ organization to serve all teachers in Honolulu. Plans were laid and the first meeting of the HONOLULU PIANO TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION was held in1950 with nine teachers from the Honolulu area. Since then, membership has grown to approximately 70 teachers from the island of Oahu and throughout Hawai`i. HPTA aims to reach out to its members’ students, the members themselves, and the community. We aim to teach and seek out good music to create fellowship among colleagues, to maintain ethical standards in our profession, and to bring outstanding pedagogy to Hawai`i. Accordingly, student recitals are held bi-monthly and workshops by members and visiting pedagogues are regularly scheduled. Each year, deserving piano students are awarded University of Hawai`i applied music scholarships. The association regularly sponsors social events in honor of visiting artists. These social gatherings allow members, students, and the community-at-large to meet informally with internationally renowned musicians. We are very proud of our association, the goals we have achieved, and our growing membership. We strive to continue this success and growth in the coming year. Student Recitals Student recitals are designed to serve as preparation, alternative and/ or extra boosters to formal recitals. They provide the kind of performance environment where there is less pressure, anxiety, and fear for some of the less ambitious students, yet offer the training and experience for public performance. The recitals are offered free of charge to all HPTA members and their students. Student recitals are held at the University of Hawai`i Music Department at 2411 Dole Street, Room 36 (Chorus Room) and other locations on Oahu. These recitals are usually held on Sunday afternoons. Please submit the student’s name, age, and the title & composer of piano piece(s) two weeks before the recital date to the student recital chair- person. Check the HPTA newsletters for recital dates/times, or contact the recital chairperson for more information. Recital Guidelines • • • • • • Each piece must be memorized. Pieces for the formal recital must be original works and not simplified versions. Semi-formal attire should be worn for both formal and student recitals. (No shorts or slippers please!) A teacher may submit any number of students, but total performance time may not exceed 10 minutes. Within this time period, each student is allowed to play up to 3 pieces. Teachers are required to familiarize students with proper performance conduct and behavior in a recital hall. Teachers are required to attend the recital program in which his/her students are performing. Teachers are requested to submit the information following the format below: 1. student name - age complete name of composition / composer / time length 2. student name - age complete name of composition / composer / time length Membership Information The Honolulu Piano Teachers Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and enjoyment of piano music in Hawai`i. All members are entitled to free admission to HPTA-sponsored events and free participation in student recitals as well as a reduced group subscription rate to the Clavier Companion magazine sponsored by HPTA. Members also receive copies of the HPTA newsletter and receive a free copy of the HPTA directory. HPTA awards scholarships annually to deserving piano students. Members of HPTA may also participate in: • Lectures and workshops in music education/pedagogy, and business taught by local professionals and visiting clinicians/artists. • Master classes and recitals featuring local students, educators, and visiting performing artists, and social events providing fellowship among profession- al musicians, educators, students, and other lovers of piano music. There are four categories of membership: • ACTIVE membership is extended to those professional piano music educators, performing artists who are graduates of a recognized, reputable college or conservatory of music, or have completed a minimum of four years of private piano study beyond high school with recognized teachers and the equivalent of a mini- mum of two years in special courses covering piano pedagogy, theory, and music history. These members often provide workshops, seminars, recitals and master classes which are scheduled throughout the year for all members. ACTIVE members are given voting privileges within the association and are the backbone of HPTA’s many programs. • SUPPORTING membership is extended to members of the general public who are not teaching professionally, are interested in piano music and its education and who wish to join the HPTA. • STUDENT membership is granted to piano students aged 14 and above, at any level of instruction who are currently studying with an ACTIVE member of HPTA. • HONORARY Life membership may be granted to any individual who has given distinguished service to HPTA or to the art of piano. HONORARY membership must be granted and approved by the Executive Board. HONORARY dues are gratis.
