[Early Printing; Botany] [Theophrastus] Incunable: Single Leaf from Theophrastus’ Peri Phyton Altion [On the Causes of Plants] Aldus Manutius, Venice, 1497. Pages 133/134 of the edition of Peri Phyton Altion, or On the Causes of Plants, printed by Aldus Manutius in 15th century Venice. Theophrastus was a successor to Aristotle in the Peripatetic school at the Lyceum, and is often considered the father of botany, though his writings treated a variety of other scientific and philosophical topics. This particular work was influential in Renaissance science: it and his other major work on the subject, Enquiry into Plants, are among the most important botanical works of the period, and put forward the first mode of systematization within the discipline. Equally important (if not more so) is the publisher of this $425 edition: Aldus Manutius was a very important printer and publisher in 15th century Venice, known for his Aldine Press, the invention of italicized type, influence of our modern usage of the semicolon and comma, and the marketing of inexpensive, portable books which presaged the popularity of modern paperbacks. His publisher’s device, a dolphin wrapped around an anchor, was instantly popular and widely pirated. It is still used by Doubleday. During his career, he made a number of innovations related to binding and design, and his efforts to publish Greek classics (such as this one), as well as Latin and Italian ones, played no small role in the survival of many works to the modern day that would otherwise have been lost to history. Near fine. Matted and framed. Slight wrinkle, but overall extremely well-preserved - no tears, stains, chips, or other markings. $45 10. [Education; Women’s Studies] Vanderpoel, Emily Noyes More Chronicles of a Pioneer School, from 1792 to 1833: Being Added History on the Litchfield Female Academy Kept by Miss Sarah Pierce and Her Nephew, John Pierce Brace New York: The Cadmus Book Shop, 1927. Limited edition, #563 of 750 copies. xii, 376 pp. 8vo. Frontispiece of the academy, photographic plates in text, index of 5 pupils and general index follow text. A history of the Litchfield Female Academy, compiled by the vice president of the Litchfield Historical Society from the journals of John P. Brace and Caroline Chester, as well as other primary sources. Litchfield is among the most important institutions of female education in the United States, and prominent figures such as the Reverend Lyman Beecher taught there (Beecher did so in exchange for free tuition for his children). Fine. 11. [Ephemera] Town of Penfield, New York 1879 Broadside Advertisement: 4th of July Festival. Including Martial Music, Singing, Poems, Speeches, Dinner, Fireworks, etc., on the Baptist Parsonage Lawn, Penfield, [New York] July 4th, 1879. Singing by Mr. G.W. Rockefeller and Glee Club. [Independence Day] Fairport Herald Print., 1879. 6 x 8 7/8. A broadside advertisement printed 85 years after the foundation of the town that has been known as Penfield, New $175 York since 1810 (it was previously called Northfield, changed to Boyle in 1808, and was divided into several towns in 1810). The company that printed the ad, Fairport Herald, was a newspaper that was only 6 years old at the time (it used this name from 1873-1925). The broadside mentions ice cream was served, which is an interesting note given that ice cream was just becoming popular - the first American ice cream factory was not opened until 1851, and industrial refrigeration was not available until the 1870s. Before these innovations, it was considered a luxury. Appears unrecorded - none located in OCLC. Near fine. Three faint horizontal creases, one vertical crease, faint crease on bottom corner, toned. 12. First thus. xviii, 587 pp. 8vo. Part one of Cervantes’s epic satirical masterpiece, with beautiful color illustrations by Salvador Dali. The farcical nature of Quixote’s ill-considered exploits pair wonderfully with the fantastical nature of Dali’s images. An excellent edition of an important work. Very good. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably 6 entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. I consider myself an entertainer.” These four stories -- “Gimpel the Fool”, “Esther Kreindel the Second”, “The Spinoza of Market Street”, and “The Black Wedding” -- are infused with Singer’s wit and imagination, wisdom and humor. The book was designed by Armand A. Bigle and produced by Marc Barraud from the original French language edition ‘Walt Disney Lions d’AFrique.’ Printed in Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland. This work is important for a number of reasons: as an artifact of early American efforts in documentary nature films; as a piece of Walt Disney memorabilia; as evidence of early conservation efforts; and as a notable example of book design, and of tipped-in photographs in 7 particular. While we found between two and three dozen copies in institutional holdings, this title appears to be rather scarce in the trade. Near fine. Tiny ding on rear board, boards lightly rubbed, spine lightly foxed, ink names on front endpapers. 20. S.N., 1878. 33 pp. Blue printed wrappers. A pro-Mormon review of the ruling from the first freedom of religion case to come before the United States Supreme $750 17 Court, focusing on the Mormon practices of bigamy and polygamy. George Reynolds, the plaintiff, was secretary to the First Presidency of the LDS Church under Brigham Young. This court case was a response to prosecution attempts under the Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act of 1862. Mormons planned to prove that the act was unconstitutional, but needed a ‘test defendant’ to bring the matter before the courts; this led to Reynolds being indicted and found guilty in two trials held in lower courts. Ultimately the appeal to the Supreme Court was unsuccessful, and the prison sentence assessed for Reynolds’s original conviction held. He was released from prison in 1881, and continued his involvement with the Mormons, publishing a number of related books. Henry Reed, the ‘old lawyer’ who wrote this review, concludes that the Supreme Court’s ruling was unjust, stating that, “it was, in fact, Mormonism and its domestic relations that were on trial; and when the Act of 1862 was passed, the judgments against them was foreordained... The court has done its work... but they have not done justice. They have won a round of applause of a number of fanatical men and silly women, whose fanaticism and silliness so far as lies in their power, they have made the law of the land.” Scarce - none in trade, no auction records in last 50 years.
