“Our sales have
grown steadily
over the past
few years.”
by Dave Townsend
Vice President, Glass Business
In order to better inform customers about our glass products and services, Total Lubricants
USA, Inc. (TLUSA) has decided to periodically publish a newsletter. In addition to customers,
this newsletter is designed for distribution to agents and distributors.
Sales Trends
Our sales have grown steadily over the past few years. After the financial crisis in late 2008,
sales in 2009 fell (approximately the same level as in 2006). Now, in 2010, it appears that
the decline has stopped, and we’re beginning to see some positive numbers. Let’s hope the
trend continues throughout the year.

KLEENKUT 2050 and
GRAPHOIDAL Shear Spray Unit:
Synergy for Success
by Dr. Lorenzo Lanzetta
Sales Manager, Europe
KLEENKUT 2050, a well
known, vegetable oil-based
lubricant, has become a
market leader in shear
lubrication. This very clean
and efficient lubricant can
increase blade life, provide
reduction in shear marks
and help the IS machine
work at high speed, with no
gob cutting problem. Thanks
to its high dilution ratio
(from 1:1,000 to 1:1,500 and
higher), this lubricant is also
economical.

Technical Service —
Characterization of a Defective Bottle
by Karen Lin
Product Manager
We received a defective bottle from a glass plant. The defect
appeared as a white-grey marker on the bottle’s surface, as shown
in the photo. Our customer asked us to investigate the cause of the
defect, so we employed an ESEM with EDS to characterize the defect.
Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM)
A high resolution imaging technology, with magnification up to more than 20,000
times, allows us to observe a micro-image of a specimen’s original surface in its
normal environment.
Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscope (EDS)
This technology detects the elemental profile of a specimen under an ESEM, by
collecting the x-rays generated by a focused electron beam.
The ESEM/EDS combination is able to provide surface information of the micro-image/
morphology of the defect and its elemental composition.
The subject bottle is a typical soda-lime glass containing Si (silicon), O (oxygen), Na
(sodium) and Ca (calcium), and the ESEM image of the defective area shows various
holes on the bottle’s surface. Some holes are quite clean, but most contain debris with
graphite-like flakes.
EDS spectra 1 and 2 show the same elemental composition for both the normal glass
surface and the clean holes in a defective surface. Spectrum 3, from the debris of
graphite-like flakes, shows a much higher carbon content and minor amounts of S
(sulfur) and Cl (chlorine), in addition to the glass components.

can be a subsidiary or an independent consultant. This OR has to fulfill all European

that all included substances are pre-registered in the files of ECHA. Otherwise, the usage or

Next, the Registration phase begins. Involved companies are permitted up to 11 years to
