(TLUSA) has decided to periodically publish a newsletter. In addition to customers, this newsletter is designed for distribution to agents and distributors. Sales Trends Our sales have grown steadily over the past few years. After the financial crisis in late 2008, sales in 2009 fell (approximately the same level as in 2006). Now, in 2010, it appears that the decline has stopped, and we’re beginning to see some positive numbers. Let’s hope the trend continues throughout the year. 2 SUMMER | FALL 2010 Organization Products In December 2008, Mr. George Landmann Also, in 2008, Mr. Jim Zelko joined our (Managing Director) retired from Total Glass N.A. team as Technical Services Manager, Lubricants Europe (TGLE). This very clean and efficient lubricant can increase blade life, provide reduction in shear marks and help the IS machine work at high speed, with no gob cutting problem. Thanks to its high dilution ratio (from 1:1,000 to 1:1,500 and higher), this lubricant is also economical. 4 SUMMER | FALL 2010 To provide maximum performance, Two highly recommended systems are systems utilizing KLEENKUT 2050 Graphoidal’s (Louis Rondot Group) SSU should meet the following water and MSU shear spray units. Working jointly quality requirements: with the Rondot Group, and combining 1) Total hardness (TH) should not exceed 50 ppm CaCO3 2) Total dissolved solids (TDS) should not exceed 100 ppm 3) pH should be between 7.5 and 8.5 4) Water must be free from bacteria and fungi. The defect appeared as a white-grey marker on the bottle’s surface, as shown in the photo. Our customer asked us to investigate the cause of the defect, so we employed an ESEM with EDS to characterize the defect. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) A high resolution imaging technology, with magnification up to more than 20,000 times, allows us to observe a micro-image of a specimen’s original surface in its normal environment. Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscope (EDS) This technology detects the elemental profile of a specimen under an ESEM, by collecting the x-rays generated by a focused electron beam. The ESEM/EDS combination is able to provide surface information of the micro-image/ morphology of the defect and its elemental composition. The subject bottle is a typical soda-lime glass containing Si (silicon), O (oxygen), Na (sodium) and Ca (calcium), and the ESEM image of the defective area shows various holes on the bottle’s surface. Some holes are quite clean, but most contain debris with graphite-like flakes. EDS spectra 1 and 2 show the same elemental composition for both the normal glass surface and the clean holes in a defective surface. Spectrum 3, from the debris of graphite-like flakes, shows a much higher carbon content and minor amounts of S (sulfur) and Cl (chlorine), in addition to the glass components. 6 SUMMER | FALL 2010 Normal surface — glass components Si Glass components: Mainly O (oxygen), Si (silicon), Na (sodium) and Ca (calcium) Full Scale 869 cts Cursor: 0.163 keV (2 cts) O Na Ca Al C 1 2 3 Ca 4 5 keV Clean hole — glass components Si Glass components: Mainly O (oxygen), Si (silicon), Na (sodium) and Ca (calcium) Full Scale 858 cts Cursor: 0.138 keV (1 cts) O Na Ca Al C 1 2 3 Ca 4 5 keV Debris — much more C, extra S and Cl C Glass components: Much more C (carbon), extra S (sulfur) and Cl (chlorine) in addition to glass components Si Full Scale 560 cts Cursor: 0.064 keV (131 cts) O Magnification of 1034 Defect area contains shallow holes and debris Fe Na Mg 1 S SCl Cl 2 3 Ca Ca 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 keV Conclusion Based on an ESEM/EDS examination of The test results suggest a typical case holes with graphite, carbonized residue and the defective bottle, holes and debris of applying mold lubricants on delivery other additives from mold lubricants. contaminated by carbon flakes, carbon equipment. Dubbed REACH (for All substances produced in the EC countries or imported had to be pre-registered prior to December 2008 by the producer or importer. Under the requirements of REACH, if a company is not based in the EC, it has to hire a so-called Only Representative (OR), which can be a subsidiary or an independent consultant. This OR has to fulfill all European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) requirements and file information on all imported quantities and downstream users. Every company that sells chemical products in the EC has to guarantee that all included substances are pre-registered in the files of ECHA. Otherwise, the usage or sales of such materials are forbidden. Next, the Registration phase begins. Involved companies are permitted up to 11 years to register these chemical substances based on their volume or risk. Registration means that the the Registration, Evaluation, ECHA will advise which kind of tests (Health and Safety or Environmental) have to be done. Authorization and Restriction The specific requirements depend on the risk level and the users. Although some natural of Chemical substances), this law was intended to improve the protection of human health and the environment through better and earlier identification substances are exempt, the cost for testing some dangerous products can be up to a few million per substance. Plus, if a finished product is a formulation based on several single substances, each substance has to be pre-registered, and the finished product has to be registered. If companies do not fulfill the requirements of REACH, the ECHA or local authorities can severely penalize these companies, up to and including closure of the companies. Because Total USA produces only a few of its own substances (such as grease), Total Glass Lubricants Europe (TGLE) serves as the OR for Total USA, and will register substances based of the intrinsic properties of on ECHA’s requirements. Total USA buys all other substances or pre-formulations from chemical substances. At the suppliers based in the USA or other countries. TGLE could not do the pre-registration for same time, innovative capability these substances or act as the OR for them, since we do not know the individual substances or the quantities in their formulation. Nor do we know the total quantities imported into the and competitiveness of the EU EC. Some of the substances we use are exempt or classified as re-imported products from chemicals industry should be the EC (which are also exempt, as long we can show the material flow to the authorities). In enhanced. It is anticipated that benefits of the REACH system order to guarantee that we fully comply with REACH, we are only buying now from preregistered companies with an OR located in Europe. This is still an ongoing process, since, during the registration process, we must regularly will be realized gradually, as provide our suppliers with information about the quantities and usage of our products. We more and more substances are also have to register our own substances. There will be an impact during the registration phased into REACH. process, as the ECHA will ask for specific tests based on usage of the products. Although TGLE GmbH is named in the files of our suppliers and in the files of their OR as a downstream user, we do not sell our products to so-called end users (average people on the street). We also only sell for industrial use, which will save some costs, and expect that our suppliers can or will increase some raw material prices based on the tests they must perform. 10 SUMMER | FALL 2010 Glassflow Supreme is a Revolutionary Scoop Oil “...a new generation of products has emerged, led by Glassflow Supreme.” by Don Shea Sales Representative, East Coast In years past, water, shear spray and The advantages of Glassflow emulsified oils had been used with varying Supreme are many: success as the standard lubricant.
