Receiving the award (Left to Right) Ahmed Al Sayegh CEO Dolphin Energy, Nasser Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO ADNOC, Yousif Al Hamar Director SCENR , Dr Thabit Abdel Salem Director, Razan K. Al Mubarak, Managing Director EWS 14 Dolphin and its partners in the ongoing coral reef study received muchappreciated recognition from their peers in the regional energy industry on December 3, 2006. The popular oil and gas magazine ‘Pipeline’ held its annual awards ceremony at the Abu Dhabi Officers Club on the occasion of the first Gastech exhibition to be held in the UAE. The magazine invites readers to vote for a number of awards, including project of the year, personality of the year etc, and Dolphin has twice won previous awards. For 2006, Pipeline readers selected the three year research project: ’Inventory & Mapping: Coral Reefs of Abu Dhabi and Eastern Qatar, Jan 2005-Dec 2007’ as winner of the Pipeline Environmental Award for Excellence in 2006. The award recognizes the work of the important partnership behind the project: the Emirates Wildlife Society, the World Wide Fund for Nature, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and Qatar’s Supreme Council for the Environment and Natural Reserves. Dolphin CEO Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh told us: “It is very motivational to win an award that has been voted by fellow-professionals in our challenging industry – it is also a matter of pride that this great regional partnership has been able to achieve so much in such a short period.” The study is proceeding on schedule and on budget – with completion planned for the last quarter of this year. AWARD FOR CORAL STUDY The recent ‘OFFSHORE ARABIA’ conference, held in Dubai during December 2006, honored Dolphin with its “2006 Excellence in Environmental Projects and Products Award” for a detailed and comprehensive paper presented to delegates. Graham Rae, VP-HSE, receiving the award from RECSO Chairman Khamis Juma Bu-Amim | Dolphinsight MAJOR ‘CONSENT TO OPERATE’ PERMITS RECEIVED 5 years work to meet HSE standards The conference is organized annually by RECSO (the Regional Clean Sea Organization), whose members include ADNOC, QP, PDO, Saudi Aramco, Iranian Offshore Oil Co and other producers with regional operations. The paper, “Developing a Regional Coral Conservation Strategy – the Dolphin Energy Perspective” was presented by Environmental Engineer Marwan Al Kendi. These ‘Consent to Operate’(CTO) permits have been issued by the Qatar Supreme Council for the Environment & Natural Reserves (SCENR) and the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD), the two regulatory bodies that control strategic environmental initiatives in their respective countries. The Qatari CTO is dated January 9, 2007 and is renewable every two years; the Abu Dhabi CTO was issued on December 28 2006, with annual renewal terms. MANDATE Commenting on the CTO, Graham Rae, VP-HSE for Dolphin Energy, said: “From its beginning, Dolphin has been mandated by its shareholders and CEO to follow international industry standards in all aspects of its quality, health, safety and environmental activities and therefore ensure regulatory compliance. “These CTOs are essential to our operations – and they represent the culmination of much work by many people across the company over five years.” Graham explained that in order to qualify for the permits – and to function as a gas production and processing company – Dolphin had completed extensive environmental baseline studies, detailed environmental impact assessments and management plans. The company had also carried out thorough preparation for commissioning and start up of our production platforms, pipelines, umbilicals, processing plant and receiving facilities, as well as our gas distribution network in the UAE. He added: “A key element of our social responsibility approach is that we protect the environment, maintain a strong safety program at work and promote sound occupational health standards. “QHSE has thus become part of everything that we do. The CTOs recognize our hard work and become benchmarks for our future operational activity.” EXPORT PIPELINE JOINS QATAR AND UAE The final link in Dolphin’s 364 kilometer, 48 inch subsea Export Pipeline, passing through Qatari and UAE waters, was made in August 2006. The pipe laid from Qatar (right) is linked with the shorter section laid from Abu Dhabi. Dolphinsight | Exhibition report: DOLPHIN CO-HOSTS GASTECH... D olphin Energy was the official co-host (alongside ADNOC) for the December 2006 Gastech Exhibition and Conference – held for the first time ever in Abu Dhabi. As a result, CEO Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh offered welcome remarks to guests at the Pipeline Magazine Awards dinner the night before the show. The CEO told the Pipeline audience how much he appreciated the ‘Excellence in Energy’ Award concept – and not only because Dolphin had won in earlier years! He subsequently delivered a formal Abu Dhabi’s ADIPEC exhibition in November 2006 saw the last appearance of Dolphin’s familiar ‘gas terminal’ cylindrical steel stand – a much larger redesigned pavilion was specifically introduced for the major Gastech show in December, also in Abu Dhabi. “The former stand fulfilled the need to catch the visitor’s eye at formative stages of the Dolphin Gas Project,” said Mirna Hijazi, Corporate Communications Manager. “Now we approach completion of construction and first gas. The global Gastech exhibition’s first appearance in the UAE | Dolphinsight keynote address to VIPs, energy ministers and delegates on the opening morning of the event, December 4, during a glittering ceremony at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Welcoming the guests warmly, the CEO said that this was a “particularly exciting time” for Gastech to visit our shores. Over the last 40 years, Abu Dhabi had built up its oil and gas industries together with experienced international partners – and the results were plain for all to see. “However, back in 1999, when the Dolphin Gas Project was announced, many of our peers were baffled” he observed. “Seven years later, gas is a hot topic and the answers are very plain indeed – at a time when we have customers queuing for Dolphin gas, even before we go to market…” Mr Al Sayegh referred to future “courageous initiatives” such as Dolphin, which also depended on vision and self belief. Abu Dhabi was now looking at new strategic and creative gas projects in coming years – particularly the development of ...AND WELCOMES GLOBAL GUESTS its extensive sour gas deposits and gas related hydrogen production. “As we prepare to supply some 30 percent of the UAE’s power requirements,” he concluded, “Dolphin is already planning ahead for its own potential expansion. We hope that within a few years we’ll be able to bring a further 1.2 billion scf/day to the booming markets of the UAE and Oman… subject to a further agreement between the governments of Abu Dhabi and Qatar.” was the right time to introduce a much larger stand – with a direct focus on receiving and hosting larger numbers of important professional guests, as well as showing our new video presentations inside and outside the stand.” VIP visitors during Gastech included The newly commissioned Dolphin pavilion, built by Pico International, drew much favorable HH Sheikh comment from Gastech visitors throughout the event. Dolphin Energy CEO Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh commented: “These students, who are all keen to work in the regional energy sector, were exposed to the gas industry’s current issues, forthcoming projects and potential employers. They joined UAE and other international engineering undergraduates for two days of information and recruitment meetings, plus visits to both conference sessions and exhibition stands. This networking “They had a real opportunity to learn about the practical needs of gas producers and utilities – what is on offer to new graduates, as well as what is expected of them.” Dolphinsight | Exhibition report 2: INNOVATIVE WELL SYSTEM SHOWN TO SPE IN USA AND ABU DHABI Four Dolphin staff members have received appreciation from fellow members of the prestigious Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) at SPE conferences in the USA and Abu Dhabi. The group has developed an innovative method of Misfer presenting the innovative well system paper in Texas EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS BY CEO: BBC, CNN AND MEED Misfer Al Hajri and Bruce Macdonald preparing for their session at ADIPEC, Abu Dhabi, in November 2006. testing gas reservoir levels deep underground. This not only minimizes reservoir damage, but also allows sequential testing of a well – without time-wasting removal of the test string in between tests. What is more, the method has been used with success on Dolphin’s North Field data well NFD1-1. Marcellin and Emmanuel Segui. The title of the paper was: “Innovative Well Testing System for High Rate Sour Gas Khuff Well in the North Field Qatar” and the authors are Dolphin engineers Misfer Al-Hajri, Bruce Macdonald, Patrick The second presentation was at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) on November 6, 2006: Misfer made the presentation, together with Bruce. The paper was selected by the SPE for its initial presentation at the 2006 SPE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition in San Antonio, Texas, USA on September 26 last year. It was presented by Misfer, with Patrick in support. During November and December 2006, CEO Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh held one-on-one meetings with leading world and regional media – to update international business markets on Dolphin’s progress and its plans for first gas to flow from Qatar to the UAE in summer 2007. The television interviews were with CNN International and the BBC: both were duly broadcast and repeated across the Middle East. The MEED magazine discussion with deputy editor Angus Hindley resulted in the regional business weekly’s first cover story of the New Year. The CEO told Hindley that although there had always been a robust economic case for the Dolphin Project, “because this is a cross-border deal, some people (in 1999) were not sure that the project would go ahead. So we did not focus on the emotional things but on the practical issues.” One aspect of Dolphin that THE NEW DOLPHIN LOGO HISTORIC VIDEO TELLS THE DOLPHIN STORY Recent construction achievements feature in the new Dolphin video Since 2003, Dolphin activities have been videoed at regular intervals by film crews operating in Fujairah, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, on and offshore Qatar and – most recently – even in Norway. The results were stored (under the rather tame professional title of ‘B Roll’), ready for the day when all these historic pieces of video could be | Dolphinsight edited and strung together to tell the actual story of operations, from the very beginning. The resulting 12-minute video made its appearance at the Gastech exhibition in December 2006, suitably equipped with explanatory sound-track and computer-generated explanatory visuals – where it attracted wide interest. Dolphin’s new logo has now been implemented across the entire range of our activities. It is – quite literally – a vital symbol of our business: a prominent corporate reference that is visible to all who come in contact with us. This rebranding exercise was launched in the UAE and Qatar during the first week of July last year. The new logo uses stronger and cleaner typefaces than before to strengthen the impressions of our various audiences about the company – with colors that have been carefully chosen to reflect our extensive marine energy interests. The spherical shape of the central element symbolizes a pipeline. In a wider context it also represents ‘the routing of energy’ from one point to another. MEED highlighted was Dolphin’s proposed fast-track volume build-up, immediately after first gas arrives. Mr Al Sayegh was quoted: “Back in 1999, the one thing we were not sure about was whether the full 2,000 million cf/d would be needed in six, 12 or 18 months after the pipeline was commissioned. Now we do, and we will hopefully ramp up over a six-to-eight month period. “If I could do it in one month, I would, but this is not possible.” EASTERN GAS DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM PROGRESSES The upgrade construction and installation work on the all-important Eastern Gas Distribution System (EGDS) is on schedule for completion by November this year. The EGDS is the last major contract for the Dolphin Gas Project, and it will The three spikes represent the three areas of activity – upstream, midstream and downstream. Abu Dhabi, Total of France and Occidental Petroleum of the USA) as well as the three GCC nations cooperating on the venture: Qatar, the UAE and the Sultanate of Oman. Dolphinsight | UAE / QATAR QATAR News ANNUAL STAFF MEETINGS: FEEDBACK RECEIVED FROM QATAR AND ABU DHABI issues related to project completion, staff benefits and other matters of broad significance. The CEO also told staff that every question raised through submission of the (anonymous) forms that had earlier been circulated would be constructively dealt with during the subsequent two months. Omar Al Ameri, newly promoted to the position of DVP-HR, was duly tasked with follow up procedures. The Annual Staff Meeting in Abu Dhabi For the second year in succession, Dolphin Energy has held staff meetings for all employees in both Qatar and Abu Dhabi – hosted by CEO Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, EVP & Qatar General Manager Sandy Lowe and EVP-Operations Ibrahim Ahmad Al Ansari. The gatherings were held to show the company’s appreciation to staff, to offer an opportunity for them to raise issues of either general or personal concern – and to have these addressed either in open forum, or privately subsequent to the occasion. The meetings were held on November 15, 2006 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Doha and on November 19 at the Rotana Beach Hotel in Abu Dhabi. In each case they were followed by dinner. In his inaugural addresses in each venue, the CEO commented on the enormous distance that Dolphin had come in just six years. This was due entirely to the commitment and enthusiasm of employees, he said, and he wanted to honor all of them for their professionalism and dedication. In each city the CEO, Sandy and Ibrahim then took selections of presubmitted questions about Omar told DolphInsight: “We have now conducted surveys to benchmark a full range of market conditions, in order to make the most suitable, factbased recommendations to management on behalf of employees. “The positive results are now being seen by staff, and I want to congratulate my team on their hard work for this initiative.” HSE CHAMPIONS RECOGNIZED IN THE UAE A number of Dolphin managers and employees in the UAE and Qatar were publicly recognized for their outstanding HSE performances during the Annual Staff Meetings held during November. Dolphinsight | DOLPHIN ‘MEETS OR BEATS’ KEY SAFETY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs) IN 2006 The year 2006 was by far the busiest in Dolphin’s history because of extensive project engineering, supply and construction. Yet the safety performance of Dolphin staff members and our contractors, on and offshore, in Qatar and the UAE has led to substantial safety achievements. Dolphin measures safety performance in our industry by recording the number of injury or illnessrelated incidents that we experience per million hours worked – the ‘total recordable incident rate’ or TRIR. During 2006, the TRIR was 1.37 for employees and 1.65 for our contractors – against a pre-set target of 4.5. For comparison purposes, Dolphin’s QHSE Department benchmarked these results against established standards of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (OGP). Their worldwide and Middle East TRIR values for 2005 were respectively 3.05 and 2.99. Dolphin CEO Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh commented: “In both the local and global context, this has been excellent HSE performance by any measure.” Our project and operations managers have worked closely with site teams and contractor management to identify all hazards and reduce risk wherever possible. Notable Dolphin 2006 milestones reflect the following achievements, all without a lost-time injury… •Dolphin staff worked 3 million hours •UAE operations at Al Ain-Fujairah pipeline •JGC (Qatar Gas Plant STAFF PARTY 2006! A SPLASH IT REALLY WAS! contractor) achieved 25 million hours •JRM (Offshore Platform construction) completed 3 million hours •Noble Gene House drilling rig (North Field) worked 750 days •Wells Operations contractors: 1 million hours •Wells Operations warehouse: 950 days Graham Rae, VPHSE, concluded: “The challenge for 2007 is to do even better!” VISIT TO AFP PROJECT SITES AND TAWEELAH The 2006 DolphinSplash on December 16 was one of the best – although it had to be postponed for two days, due to the fact that this year, we really had a winter (some global warming would have been appreciated at the time…) The Emirates Palace Hotel provided a splendid backdrop for lots of fun and games. The magnificent buffet and the entertainment went on till late – and as usual it was the kids who didn’t want to leave… Senior management visited the Al Ain Fujairah Pipeline during October 2006 on a tour of inspection – a similar inspection visit was made later during December 2006 to the Taweelah receiving facilities. 10 | Dolphinsight Dolphinsight | 11 W A LIFE IN THE DAY… elcome to our third Dolphin-sight turtle installment, updating you on Dolphin’s efforts to protect endangered Hawksbill and Green Sea Turtles on and around the beach areas where we have been performing construction activity (photo: turtle nesting at RLC). NOURA AL KAABI Head of Training & Development I come from what you might call a ‘military family’ to which I am devoted– my father is a senior officer here and my brother is studying at Sandhurst in the UK (No, he doesn’t know Prince William, he’s one course after him!). My mother is a Principal at an Abu Dhabi High School. an MBA, but probably in the wider HR arena. I don’t want to confine myself to training, and recruitment is a sector that has always interested me: people selection and development… As for constructive leisure, I am a very enthusiastic photographer! I have A colorful scene in Venice, Italy… I DO My key function is to provide the correct training and career path planning for all Dolphin Associates, in both Qatar and the UAE. Currently, for example, I am involved in delivering what we call ‘matrix training’ for QHSE at Taweelah and for the Al Ain-Fujairah Pipeline. This is a necessary safety awareness program that must be completed by relevant employees, even before they start actual technical training: employee safety is just so important! My next major project in 2007 will be to complete a cycle of successful “succession planning” – this will help to prepare nationals for higher positions over the longterm, and it will also apply to non-national staff as well, at all levels. Here we 12 | Dolphinsight are really looking three to five years ahead… I AM I am a graduate of the UAE University in Al Ain, with my Major in Management Information Systems – somewhat different to what I do now. This background is very helpful, however, as I am always seeking ways to automate and administer, using MIS-type employee tracking systems which save time and effort for all involved. It is my interest in people that took me into the HR arena. I was previously a Supervisor at Zayed Military Hospital, where I looked after support staff and handled internships for IT. I joined Dolphin in April 2004 as a Senior Training & Development Officer, so I will shortly have achieved three years. … plus a stunning image from East Africa So you can see that I come from a very organized background: that helps me to be focused in all I do! I ASPIRE I anticipate many challenges, and I also need to handle the current ones, while deepening my knowledge and experience. In terms of work and study, I am keen to do taken many, carefullycomposed black-andwhite and color pictures in such charming countries as Turkey, Italy, even Tanzania. I especially like Nikon cameras for their quality and versatility. I also (of course) aspire to do better at my work. I greatly appreciate the atmosphere created here by senior management – and also the support that I get from my hardworking team! Dolphin achieved another successful turtle monitoring and protection season in 2006. With the majority of shoreline construction works completed earlier in the year, the Dolphin RLC beach area was largely re-instated to it’s original profile. In close cooperation with RLC Environment Department, an environmental awareness initiative was undertaken when local high school kids were given a tour of our beach area and helped in cleaning up trash and other debris which had drifted onto the beach from further out in the gulf waters. A fun day was had by all. The students were very interested in Dolphin’s turtle protection program, and the beach ended up pristine and clean afterwards such that turtles could nest without any obstacles. In fact, we are happy to report that turtles nested successfully in 2006 on the beach directly above where are pipelines were installed and covered back over with sand. Prior to construction, the beach sand had been carefully kept stored separately from other excavation material such that the same sand was used to return the beach to it’s original condition (see inset photos). Turtles started nesting a bit earlier than previous years in RLC, but our monitoring team was ready for them once again. Based on our experience from previous years, and in coordination with RLC, we barricaded a small area of beach where our umbilical cables were to be installed across the shoreline (see previous inset photo). In this way, we protected turtles from nesting in the small area we needed to work in, and DOLPHIN PROTECTING TURTLES …PART III at the same time avoided any project delays. Turtles nested happily on either side of this protection area, and later hatched completely undisturbed by any Dolphin project activity. The first turtle nest was recorded in March’06, as compared to April when the turtles typically start nesting. All nests found within and adjacent to Dolphin’s Rightof-Way (ROW) were again monitored (a nest egg count is shown in photo above) and protected by installing plastic mesh barriers around them (shown in photo is the same technique applied by Dolphin on the UAE side of the pipeline project). The Dolphin team has continually worked very closely with RLC Environment Department towards common turtle protection and monitoring goals. In August 2006, Dolphin received a letter of commendation from the Director of RLC (Misnad Al Misnad), expressing appreciation of Dolphin’s ongoing environmental protection efforts; stating in part, “Dolphin Energy’s efforts within this programme over the last two years represents one of the single most important marine conservation initiatives involving marine turtles within RLIC, indeed Qatar.” . The Project HSE team would like to thank the RLC Environment Department and the Dolphin Project Management Team, and it’s Contractors, for their environmental protection support again during the 2006 turtle season. With only minimal beach construction activity remaining to be undertaken, Dolphin will ensure that the beaches around it’s pipelines are fully restored and ready for turtles to nest again in 2007 and onwards… Written by: Steve Sayle, Project Environmental Specialist: Dolphin Energy Limited Dolphinsight | 13 IT & A Report: TRANSFORMING THE I T ENVIRONMENT WITH WORLD-CLASS SOLUTIONS Dolphin’s new IT “Standardization Initiative” will define and implement a common office application core for all Dolphin Energy sites – as well as providing world-class synergetic solutions to support business goals. The project will begin in Q1 2007, with completion likely by year end.
