Big
Cedar
Lodge,
located
in
the
heart
of
the
Ozark
Mountain
region,
is
a
very
special
place
for
me.
My
wife,
Jeanie,
found
this
majesHc
spot
on
the
shores
of
Table
Rock
Lake
and
it
has
become
a
place
of
passion,
fun
and
inspiraHon
for
me.
The
combinaHon
of
the
mountains
and
hills
of
the
Ozarks,
the
beauHful
rock
formaHons…
including
caves,
the
wonderful
flora
and
fauna,
and
the
crystal
clear
waters
of
Table
Rock
Lake
make
this
locaHon
one
of
a
kind.
This
locaHon
is
of
majesHc
beauty
and
has
been
a
place
where
folks
from
all
over
the
world
have
been
coming
for
decades
to
enjoy
the
incredible
beauty,
the
cultural
delights
and
the
wonderful
recreaHonal
opportuniHes
from
hunHng,
fishing,
boaHng,
hiking…or
simply
watching
a
beauHful
sunrise
or
sunset
paint
beauHful
colors
in
the
sky,
on
the
water,
and
within
the
mist
of
the
mountain
landscape.
A
secret
of
the
Ozarks
is
its
magical
beauty,
its
unique
Hillbilly
culture,
its
grand
menu
of
outdoor
recreaHonal
opportuniHes,
its
peacefulness,
which
combine
to
pierce
your
sole
with
everlasHng
memories.
…and
the
lasHng
desire
to
go
back
again
to
rekindle
a
special
joy
that
the
Ozark
Mountains
provides
with
every
visit
and
every
exploraHon.

The
porHons
of
the
property
that
Big
Cedar
Lodge
encompasses
have
passed
through
several
hands.
IniHally
it
was
purchased
from
the
Army
Corp
of
Engineers
in
1901,
by
Robert
F.
Hubbard
of
Cazenovia,
New
York.
In
1927
Julian
Simmons
of
Springfield
purchased
80
acres
of
the
land.
Then
Harry
Worman
and
Irving
Schwab,
a\orneys
from
Springfield
MO,
purchased
an
addiHonal
320
acres.
In
1946,
the
land
was
then
endowed
to
The
School
of
the
Ozarks
and
Shriner’s
Children’s
Hospital
by
Worman.
Then
the
land
was
purchased
by,
Madry
and
Faucet,
a
local
logging
firm.
In
1947,
Dan
Norris,
a
California
Developer
purchased
the
land,
with
the
intenHon
to
open
the
area
as
ranch
called,
Devil’s
Pool
Guest
Ranch.
A`er
Dan’s
death,
ownership
fell
into
the
hands
of
Ford
Motors
Credit
Company.
In
the
1970’s
it
was
purchased
by
Oakmont
Development.
And
finally
in
1987,
Johnny
Morris
purchased
the
land
that
is
today,
known
as
Big
Cedar
Lodge.

As
you
wind
through
our
wooded
entrance
to
Big
Cedar
Lodge,
the
ruggedness
of
this
remote
seong
will
surely
inspire
curiosity
about
the
NaHve
Americans
and
wild
creatures
who
roamed
these
hills
for
centuries,
living
in
harmony
with
the
land.
Tucked
deep
in
the
heart
of
the
Ozark
Mountains,
the
area
was
accessible
only
by
horseback
or
foot.
Just
a`er
the
turn
of
the
twenHeth
century,
railroads
made
their
appearance
and
this
phenomenal
retreat
from
the
everyday
world
became
a
vacaHon
paradise
for
travelers.
The
1920s
found
two
prominent
Missourians
making
plans
to
build
lavish
back
country
resort
homes
on
land
adjoining
the
Long
Creek
Arm
of
the
White
River
known
as
Big
Cedar
Hollow.
Together,
Jude
Simmons,
business
entrepreneur,
and
Harry
Worman,
Frisco
Railroad
execuHve,
acquired
a
total
of
300
forested
acres,
and
construcHon
began.
Simmons
chose
a
log
mansion,
reminiscent
of
the
grand
wilderness
hunHng
lodges
found
in
the
Adirondacks
region,
while
Worman
constructed
his
retreat
in
the
tradiHonal
Tudor
style
of
stone
and
stucco.
NaHve
materials
were
used
throughout
both
homes
leaving
the
hillsides
more
vulnerable
to
erosion.
As
the
Great
Depression
le`
the
American
economy
in
decline,
travel
became
more
difficult
and
the
two
families
were
unable
to
spend
Hme
here.
The
property
was
later
owned,
for
a
short
Hme,
by
a
very
consumpHve
logging
firm
before
being
purchased
in
1947
by
Dan
Norris,
a
real
estate
execuHve
and
hotel
operator.
His
addiHon
of
a
lodge,
swimming
pool,
and
stable
created
the
Devil’s
Pool
Guest
Ranch.
Following
Bass
Pro
Shops’
acquisiHon
of
the
property
in
1987,
founder
John
Morris
chose
to
restore
the
Simmons
and
Worman
buildings
to
their
original
prominence,
iniHaHng
a
rigorous
commitment
to
renew
the
natural
beauty
of
Big
Cedar
Hollow.

As
you
become
a
part
of
the
Big
Cedar
Lodge
family,
the
extravagant
pages
of
our
past
will
mingle
with
the
more
recent
awareness
of
our
environment
to
surround
you
in
warm
Ozark
hospitality,
lots
of
friendly
smiles,
and
the
a\enHon
to
detail
that
you
will
soon
realize
are
a
part
of
everyday
life
in
our
resort.
Come
se\le
in
to
the
sheer
enjoyment
of
the
Ozark
Mountain
countryside
wrapped
around
the
shores
of
prisHne
Table
Rock
Lake.
In
1958,
the
White
River
was
dammed
to
form
Table
Rock
Lake
and
the
stage
was
set
for
the
Ozarks’
premier
wilderness
resort.
The
Spirit
of
Dorothy
Harry
and
his
wife
Dorothy
Worman
were
some
of
the
first
residents
of
Big
Cedar
Hollow
and
enjoyed
many
years
in
the
secluded
Ozarks
wilderness.
Unfortunately
the
two
divorced
in
the
mid
1930’s
for
reasons
unknown,
but
there
were
always
possible
explanaHons:
the
age
difference
between
the
two,
the
a\racHon
that
Dorothy
shared
with
her
neighbor
Jude
or
the
fact
that
Harry
was
frequently
away
on
business.
A`er
the
divorce,
Dorothy
would
sHll
visit
Devil’s
Pool.
Dorothy
eventually
remarried
and
shortly
therea`er
traveled
to
Mexico.
While
in
Mexico
City
she
died
under
sudden
and
mysterious
circumstances.
Some
sources
say
she
was
murdered
but
there
is
no
concrete
evidence
of
foul
play.
Others
claim
she
ran
away
to
Mexico
with
one
of
the
Devil’s
Pool
caretakers,
a
story
that
lacks
credibility.
Whatever
happened,
her
body
was
cremated
and
her
ashes
sent
back
to
Devil’s
Pool
to
be
sca\ered
near
the
Worman’s
home.
People
say
that
Dorothy
Worman’s
ghost
walks
the
grounds
of
Devil’s
Pool,
perhaps
because
of
the
mysterious
circumstances
surrounding
her
death.

Ernest
Hemingway
The
world
knows
Ernest
Hemingway
as
an
inspiring
author
who
wrote
several
classics
of
American
literature
and
who
received
the
Pulitzer
Prize
for
FicHon
in
1953
and
the
Nobel
Prize
in
Literature
in
1954.
However,
Hemingway
was
a
great
Sportsman.
He
went
on
several
safaris
in
Africa
as
well
as
hunHng
trips
out
West
and
discovered
his
passion
for
sport
fishing
in
Key
West.
Hemingway
highlighted
his
respect
for
anglers
in
The
Old
Man
and
the
Sea,
perhaps
his
most
famous
work.
It
is
primarily
for
this
love
of
the
outdoors
and
his
contribuHons
to
hunHng
and
fishing
that
Big
Cedar
Lodge
dedicated
a
cabin
to
Ernest
Hemingway.
