SMART Repair Process
SMART repair is a cost effective technique and can be utilised when the area to be repaired can be
contained within the area of an A4 sheet of paper.
Step 1.
Access the position, size of damage and colour for suitability to SMART repair (THINK SMALL).
3M have developed dedicated Small to Medium Area Repair Technology
(SMART) and Local Area Repair processes with 3M products to help you carry
out repairs effectively.
The processes in this guide can
help you to produce fast, efficient,
repairs ensuring you deliver a rapid
repair to your customer.

Wash and preclean the entire panel using 3M™ Professional Panel Wipes 34567
and 3M™ Adhesive Cleaner 08984.
Compound the entire panel using 3M™ Perfect-it III™ Fast Cut Plus
Compound 50417 (and 3M™ Perfect-it III™ Extra Fine Compound 80349
if a dark colour) to get the panel back to a freshly painted appearance.
Sand out the defect using a 3M™ Hookit™ Abrasive P180 or P320 76mm Disc.
Apply a stopper if required and sand using 3M™ Hookit™ Abrasive P180 /
P320 Disc or Sheet .
(Always start with the finest grade possible).
N.B. Using a 01908 Handblock with the abrasive disc will help
keep the repair area smaller than using a traditional block.
N.B. The use of 76mm discs helps to minimise the
size of the repair area.
Step 5.

Sand around the repair area using a
3M™ Trizact™ 75mm, P1000 Blending Disc 50413.
Enlarge the area further using a 3M Trizact 75mm, P3000 Fine
Finishing Disc 50415.

N.B. Remember to think small, the completed sanded
area should be no bigger than a A4 Sheet.
Step 8.
Mask out the surrounding area to be painted using 3M Soft Edge Foam
Masking Tape Plus 50421 and 3M™ Taped Masking Film 05967 with
Scotch® High Performance Masking Tape 3434 07895.

Apply the primer following the paint company recommendations.
Overspray must be kept to a minimum to keep the repair area
as small as possible.

Sand the primer using 3M™ Hookit™ P500 and /or P1000 76mm Abrasive Disc.
Apply the basecoat to the primed area using 3M™ Mini Paint Preparation
System (PPS) again following paint company guidelines.
N.B. Apply the basecoat from the outside in to keep the area small
and the overspray to a minimum.
Step 11.
Once the basecoat is thoroughly dry,
carefully ‘Tack’ the area using the
3M™ Tack cloth Aqua 50401. Apply
the clearcoat to the basecoat area
and then fade the edge away using
the blending agent.
Step 12.
After the clearcoat is fully cured, remove any defects using the
3M™ Microfinishing P1500 260L 76mm disc 00907 or the 3M™ Trizact™ A5
Disc 50079 on the 3M™ Finesse it™ Sanding Block. The 3M™ Trizact™ P3000
Grade 76mm Disc can be used on the blend area to reduce the overspray.
Step 13.
Compound using 3M™ Perfect-it III™ Fast Cut Plus Compound 50417
followed by 3M™ Perfect-it III™ Extra Fine Compound 80349 to blend
the new and old paintwork.

Local Repair Process
Step 1.

N.B. At this stage, the use of a 127mm handblock will help to
keep the repair area smaller.

Sand around the repair area using 3M™ Hookit™ Abrasive 125mm P320
and/or P500 disc.
Enlarge the area further using a
3M™ Microfinishing 125mm P1000 260L Film Disc 01053.
Any areas that will contain a clearcoat blend should be sanded with
3M™ Trizact™ Fine Finishing Disc 125mm P3000 02096.
Clean, degrease and mask out the area to be painted.
N.B. Mask adjoining panels to protect during this process.

Locally mask out the area to be primed, using 3M SEMFT+ 50421 and Taped Masking Film.

Apply the primer using 3M Paint Preparation System (PPS) following
the paint company recommendations.

After curing remove the local masking and sand the primer using
3M™ Hookit™ 125mm P500 Disc and /or P800 Grade 3M™ Soft hand
Roll Perforated 216u hand sheet.
N.B. If appropriate apply 3M Smooth Transition Tape 06800 for clear coat application

Clean, degrease and tack off the area to be painted using 3M™ Tack Cloth
Aqua 50401.
Apply the basecoat using 3M™ Paint Preparation System (PPS) to the
primed area again following paint company guidelines.
Once the basecoat is thoroughly dry, carefully ‘Tack’ the area using the
3M™ Tack Cloth Aqua 50401. Apply the clearcoat to the basecoat area
and then fade the edge away using the blending agent.

Step 14.
After the clearcoat is fully cured, remove any defects using the 3M™ Microfinishing 260L 125mm P1500 Disc 01051 or the 3M™ Trizact™ A5 Disc 50079 on
the 3M™ Finesse it sanding block 50199. The 3M™ Trizact™ 125mm P3000 Disc 02096 can be used on the blend area to reduce the overspray.

Alloy Wheel Repair Process
Step 1.
Clean the wheel using 3M Grey Scotch-brite™ and warm soapy water
to remove brake dust /road grime etc.
Step 2.
If possible push the tyre away from the rim to give better access
to the damage.
Step 3.
Sand out the defects using 3M™ Hookit™ P180, P320 then P500 disc.
This is better done using either the 76mm or 125mm size abrasive.
N.B. Care MUST be taken around the ‘spokes’ not to alter the shape.
Step 4.
Sand the area of the wheel to be painted using a 3M™ Paint Preparation Pad
Grade 1000.
Step 5.
Mask out the tyre and valve stem.
Step 6.
Apply a suitable primer.
(Follow paint company recommendations)
Step 7.
Sand primer if necessary using a 3M™ Hand Pad 216u P800 50340.
Step 8.
Apply the colour and clearcoat.
(Follow paint company recommendations)
Step 9.
Remove the masking and re-inflate the tyre.
Notes:
1. Do NOT attempt to repair a wheel if it has split.
2. Do NOT remove an excessive amount of the aluminium during sanding as this will lead to poor shape and could also weaken the wheel.
3. When filling scuffs in the wheel only use approved filler. Standard Polyester fillers should NOT be used.
