Inadequate and incomplete information related to natural resources rights (i.e. water) and the understanding of the aquaculture industry by financial institutions for operating loans further deters growth. Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center (NRAC) Dan Miller is WV’s only representative on the NRAC Technical and Industry Committee. No report from Dan in 2012 or 2011 NRAC chose not to participate in this meeting in any way. Little relevance to WV aquaculture. Oxygen cost went up >8.5% Feed cost increased 20.4% As a result wholesale trout prices will increase to $2.00/lb versus $1.75/lb in late 2011. This price increase still leaves Mountaineer with tighter profit margins than in 2011. Cost: $15/adult/day $9/child (0-12yrs)/day (limit 4/person a day) Annual Pass (individual): $600 (limit 4/day) Bill Miller renovating an old church as a restaurant. Marlinton Cliff Lester New fee fishing business near Beckley Brought in a 24 X 14 building to serve as a fly shop and office for the fee fish operation. Small pond that serves as a sediment pond dug out to 10 feet. Ten tandem loads of dirt were removed after ten years accumulation. Trout in the Family Room Robert Slider, Fairmont Water well dug prior to 1900 (originally drinking water source) The well is 18 feet deep and keeps about 10 feet of water. Temperature 61 - 63 F year round. The inside 'pond' is in the family room and is 6 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 28 inches deep. It holds 260 gallons of water. Water is filtered as it is pumped into the 'pond'. An overflow drains the water back into the well. So it is a flow-thru system. The 'pond' contains two aerators. Twin Fork Trout (George Cottle, Mercer County) Been in business 40 + years. Stream fishing going OK – October to July. Sell everything I can raise. Prices up, water is down. Start at $2.65/lb. High protein feed – can get them too fat. “Handle a lot of money, just don’t get to keep it.” Provide guide service in the area and have a fee fishing pond to complement cabins, gift shop, etc. Demand for Trout Fishing is good, don’t really want to be any busier. Price went up to $4.50/lb. Cleaning fees increased to $2/fish gutted or filleted. Mitigation plan has been set, now must find a way to monitor and report for the next 4 years. Would like to produce trout for the lake. Wholesale business declining - went from 15 to 3 pay lakes. Small businesses couldn’t take the price increasing. Prices increasing on both trout and catfish (up $0.35.lb). Currently paying $2.25/lb for trout and $1.85/lb for catfish.
