As a funeral director you are most certainly aware of the obstacles put in place by government when called upon to serve a Veteran of Canada’s Armed Forces. If you are a member of Funeral Service Association of Canada you are also aware that FSAC has been lobbying government for the much needed increase to the funds made available by Last Post Fund. Prime Minister Harper has remained dismissive and seems unwilling to discuss when questioned by media and by government opposition. On the other side, FSAC, and the Last Post Fund committee, are vocal when it comes to creating awareness in regards to the on-going fight for fairness pertaining to funding for Veterans funerals. FSAC View: “Government action is needed to ensure that Canadian veterans are able to receive the funerals they deserve,” said Phil Fredette, Government Relations Chair, Funeral Service Association of Canada (FSAC), “Previous Ministers of Veterans Affairs have recognized this as an important concern, and the current government has the mandate to act.” The Last Post Fund is a non-profit organization that offers financial benefits for funeral related expenses to eligible veterans and disability pensioners. Despite a constant rise in funeral costs, funding rate levels for the Last Post Fund have remained constant since 2001.
