Hi Triple Crown Residents,
It’s May, and soon school will be out and we will soon be vacationing and spending lazy days at the pool. We would like to
feature our 2016 graduates; if you have one or know of one please
make sure they email me
the info listed below.
We feature many of the activities that go on around Triple
Crown, like golf, tennis and the swim team. We have two Ryle
High school student writers that are contributing for the teens.
I always try to feature the many wonderful fundraisers our resident ladies are involved in. If you have a suggestion or idea you
would like to see in the magazine, please let me know.

family spotlight
Meet The Lang Family
Love happens when you least expect it. Such was the case
for Rhonda. She saw Kevin Lang at a volunteer event for
the American Cancer Society. He was raising money by
dressing up for the song “Dude Looks Like A Lady” and
caught her eye. The rest is history. Rhonda and Kevin got
married three years ago and have been happy ever since.
Their blended family consists of three boys: Carson (age 10), Cole (age 8), and
Kaden (age 7). They enjoy the companionship of the only girl in the house, Rapunzel, the family cat. The family frog, Cheddar, also brings joy to this family of five.
They built their home in Triple Crown over two years ago and moved in on
December 23rd. “It was a dream come true,” shares Rhonda. They were excited
to hear Fischer was building in Triple Crown. They enjoy all the amenities that
Triple Crown offers them: the clubhouse, pool, walking trials, and the new park.
The Langs like how social the neighborhood is, which suits this active family to a
tee. Prior to living in Triple Crown, they resided in a condo in Florence.
Kevin was employed with Delta Airlines for 17.5 years and made a career
change in February 2016 to GE Aviation. Rhonda works part-time, wearing a
number of hats. She is a fitness instructor for Crunch fitness, doing Zumba,
Boot Camp, and Cardio Sculpt. This fitness enthusiast is also an Assistant
Cheerleading Coach for St. Henry High School. In addition to these two jobs,
Rhonda does paint and pour parties at Studio 25 on Friday nights. Around
40-45 women gather together and create a unique work of art under Rhonda’s
guidance. She gets paid to do what she loves!
As a family, everyone loves to spend time together. The Langs especially like to
fly the friendly skies on average of once a month. One of their favorite vaca-

In their spare time, the boys love to play together and build forts. Playing
sports in the backyard and playing in the media room (built just for them) are
popular pastimes as well. Rhonda shares, “They also love to play with all of the
kids in the neighborhood, especially any who have a trampoline.”

tions was going on a Disney cruise to the Bahamas.
They have visited the Nickelodeon theme park in
Minneapolis. Kevin and Rhonda even traveled to
Paris last May. Holiday travel often involves going
to Florida, where Rhonda’s family resides. Another
big trip is currently in the works. The Langs might
visit Disney World in California, or go to Paris as
a family, or even Hawaii. They are excited to see
where they go next!
Happy 40th Birthday Rhonda
We are honored to feature the Lang family in this month’s Family Spotlight! Be
sure to say hello to them if you haven’t already. They would love to meet more
friendly folks in the neighborhood!
One unique thing about the Langs is family game
night. During their “power hour,” the family powers
off their technology to power up their family. The
boys love playing bingo and competing for small
prizes on the prize cart. Making cookies together is
equally fun for everyone.
Family dinners take priority for the Langs. Four
times a week, everyone gathers together to reconnect with one another over a meal. Their morning
room was built for the purpose of family dinners –
something that everyone looks forward to!
Expect to see this family out and about this
summer. Rhonda shares, “In the summer you will
see our family at the Triple Crown pool a lot. The
boys love the diving board and concession area.”
Or you could find the Langs around their fire
pit in their backyard, roasting s’mores or telling
ghost stories.

Triple Crown Life Magazine Network Meeting
Triple Crown Life magazine held a network meeting in the Library at the TCCC
on Wednesday March 30th. We were introduced to the following businesses:
Troy Russell is a Bath and Kitchen designer with Kelly Bros. He can help you
to design that basement, kitchen or bath remodel or help with decking needs as
well. They have excellent showrooms where you can view their many designs
in Covington and Walton. You can view his ad in the magazine.
Denise Coop with Zija products and Essential Oils. Denise can help with
weight loss and overall health with her Smart mix, enhanced Moringa Blend
drink mix and the many Oils that help with everyday concerns. If getting good
sleep is an issue, she can help with her Lavender Oil. You can view her ad in
the magazine.
Bridgette Beatrice is a realtor and talked about her love of working with clients
to help them sell or buy a new home. B also represented her husband Bob with
Beatrice Insurance. He sells health insurance, as well as long term care. They
are both resident business owners.
Renee Moore introduced her photography business, Dream Moore Photography and showed us some of her beautiful work from her laptop. Renee and her
husband Dannie are both involved in the business. We enjoyed seeing examples
of Renee’s work of before and after photos. One of her specialties is editing each
photo for the most beautiful effect. They are both resident business owners.
The meeting is open to all magazine advertisers and TC resident business owners. We are all about building relationships and take the time at every meeting
to get to know each other and talk about our businesses. A great example of
how much we enjoy our meetings is; we usually have the meeting for two hours
but are still there most months at for two and a half hours! It is a great way to
meet other business owners and get to know them
and you can come and stay as long as you like.
Our next meetings in the Library at the
TCCC are:
Wednesday April 27th from 9 to 10:30 – we are trying a morning meeting!
Wednesday May 25th from 5:30 to 7:00 – evening
Hope to see you there!
Are You A Resident Business Owner?
You Are Invited To Attend Our Monthly Networking Event To Spread The Word About
Your Business.
Each month, N2 Publishing organizes an event
where our current advertisers, resident business
owners and guests are able to meet a variety of new
contacts to further establish relationships and grow
their businesses.
Networking is ultimately about "who you know"
and "who knows you!" This is a great opportunity
to get your business noticed by other like-minded
professionals. I will be sending an invite each
month, so please email me your email address so
you can be included. Come for just a few minutes
or stay for the entire time (5:30-7:00 p.m.). Please
bring business cards! Please email [email protected] to be added to the evite list or if

Triple Crown Golf Cart Paths!
Please be aware that when jogging or strolling
on the golf course for your personal enjoyment you are putting yourself and or child
at risk for a serious injury. With the warm
weather and longer daylight more and more
community residents are spending their time
outdoors. Whether you’re taking a stroll or
hitting the pavement for a hard run, please
use the walking trails. The golf course and
golf cart paths are private property. They are
for Triple Crown Country Club golf members
and their guests to use during their rounds.
Anyone using the cart paths is risking injury,
distracting golfers, and trespassing. A major
concern is an errant golf ball striking a small
child and causing serious injury. Thank you
for your cooperation.

At Ohio Swimming Jr. Olympics
Congratulations to Triple Crown Man O' War members Avery Floyd
(13), Blake Koenigschnect (10), Anna Palen (12), Brady Parke(10),
Andy Pleiman (9) and Brandon Wu (10) for Qualifying and Competing
in the Ohio Junior Olympic Swimming Championships held at The
Ohio State University pool last month!
The Ohio Jr Olympics are consistently one of the Top 10 Age Group Swimming
Championships in the country. Qualifying for the Championships alone places
a swimmer in the top 100 in their respective age groups in this region of the
country! The age groups are divided into 13-14, 11-12 and 10 and under. Qualifying is done based upon time standards set up for each stroke, distance, age and
gender. Time standards at extremely tough at any age, but they are especially
difficult when you are at the younger end of your current age group.
Competing for their year-round swimming team, the Northern KY Clippers,
these Outstanding Man O' Wars continued the growing tradition of superfast swimming and amazing accomplishments by Triple Crown residents
and members!
Led by Anna Palen's Incredible 11 Top 14 finishes in a variety of swimming
strokes and distances ranging from the 50 Breaststroke to the 500 Freestyle;
the sensational six met the challenges of the region’s best swimmers and returned better, faster and more accomplished than ever!
16 Triple Crown Life • May 2016
Andy Pleiman (9) and Brady Parke (10). Andy had four events: Two
individual cuts in 50 free and breast and two relays in 200 free and
medley. Brady had a 200 medley relay.
Swimming is an incredibly demanding sport! The
swimmers practice four-to-six times per week
and are some of the most physically fit individuals
you will ever meet. Their steadfast commitment
to themselves, their teammates and swimming
as a sport has helped, along with their dedicated
parents, craft these individuals into strong, healthy
young people!
Triple Crown Swimmers are now integral parts of
the many area swim teams such as: The NKY Clippers, the YMCA Barracudas, the Cincinnati Marlins,
as well as the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Gray Middle
School Champions, Ryle High School Teams, swim
teams at Villa Madonna HS, St Henry HS and
Holy Cross HS and of course, the 2016 Undefeated
League Champion Triple Crown Man O' Wars!!
Congratulations Again to the sensational six for
your accomplishments last month in Columbus
-- and we look forward to watching each of you
and your teammates continue the improvement
and excellence this summer at Triple Crown CC
and beyond!

It's springtime and e river is caing.
A program we have been working on
for several years now is the Minnows
program. Minnows will be swimmers 4
years of age and older who have never
had swim lessons before or are swimmers requiring assistance in the water.
If you are interested in lessons for your
child, no matter what their age, let
Mark Fowler know (see info below).
"The Knot" is your source for marine adventure.
Our full-service marina can be your local home for fun on the water.
• Authorized Dealer: Starcraft, Starweld

Once we get kids to the point they can
swim a lap, we put them on the swim
team. The Man-O-Wars swim team is
the competitive arm of the program and
is comprised of children ranging in age
from approximately 5-6 to 18 years.
The swim team, 150 strong, is made up
of kids from all skill levels of swimming.
No matter the skill level, from relative
beginners to Junior Olympic qualifying
swimmers, the Man-O-Wars have them
all. Matter of fact, no teenager is too
old to learn (or begin) in the program.

The 2015 Man O’Wars went undefeated
during the regular season in the Greater
Cincinnati Country Club Swim & Dive
League. The team then went on to win
the league outright by capturing victory
at its Championship Meet. The team
thanks all its previous swimmers and
parents and looks forward to seeing
them again in 2016!
2016 Triple Crown Man-O-Wars
Swim Team Adds Diving!
The league champion Man O’Wars swim team is gearing up
for another stellar year of competition and comradery
in 2016. The team is looking to grow in exciting ways in
2016 and build upon its success from 2015. First off, the
team will be offering multiple levels of instruction
PLUS adding diving into its repertoire. We are excited;
the Man O’Wars will now offer a dive team for the first
time! Any child who feels comfortable upside down
(you have one of those?) should come join the dive team!
Cheerleaders and gymnasts would excel at diving and
Karen Hughes, newly appointed Head Dive Coach, has
years of experience to help them succeed. We can’t wait
to see this program blossom!
While being successful against our
competitors is part of the Man O’Wars
goal, individual improvement, sportsmanship and teamsmanship are equally
important. The season is brief, June 1
to July 18 and the program is a bargain
at around $2.50 an hour of instruction!
Once the competitive season is complete, the team celebrates its season at
the annual swim banquet. There will be
a registration event April 27 at 6 p.m.
at Triple Crown Country Club; Q&A
Session at 7 p.m. Please come and bring
your swimmers!

Winter Travels 2016
Written by resident Pam Porter
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry
and narrow-mindedness, and many
of our people need it sorely on these
accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot
be acquired by vegetating in one little
corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” -- Mark Twain, The Innocents
Abroad/Roughing It.
“Remember, my Regatta friends, you
are no longer tourists; you are world
travelers.”—Ms. Julie James, Tour
Director of Oceania’s M/S Regatta.
Very true, Ms. Julie; and Mr. Clemens, as per your recommendation,
on January 20th, Ron and I boarded
Oceania Cruises’ M/S Regatta in
Miami, cruising to Lima, Peru/Machu Picchu via the Panama Canal.
This 73-day odyssey, aptly named
“The Bridge of the Americas Tour”,
originated in Los Angeles, and we
sailed for 19 of those days. It’s one of
Oceania’s smaller ships, carrying 684
passengers and 400 extremely attentive crew members. Oceania prides
itself for providing the finest five-star
cuisine at sea, and the culinary team
on the Regatta provided an extraordinary dining experience, using the
freshest, premium ingredients-many
brought on board when we docked at
various ports. I may have had lobster
five days in a row, until I decided to
try the Wagyu beef that was one of
their many delectable menu choices.
Eighteen evenings later, we had also
enjoyed roasted quail, crispy duck,
chateaubriand, escargot, and Chilean
sea bass … Bon Appetit!
Day 1: spent boarding, unpacking and
getting acquainted with the ship’s
layout, which was much easier, being
a somewhat smaller ship; some pool
time, lovely lunch then Bon Voyage
at 6 p.m.! Day 2; stopped in Key
West; took a trolley tour to visit our
old haunts from a visit back in ’95,
20 Triple Crown Life • May 2016
ending up once again at Sloppy Joe’s
for a bit of conch fun; visited Mel
Fisher’s store and purchased two of
his coin treasures recovered from
the sea’s pirate booty. Day 3/4: at
sea, then a stop at Cozumel, Mexico;
weather didn’t permit snorkeling,
but with new friends Dennis and
Karen in tow, the guys took turns
driving and we did a jeep tour along
a beautiful coastline and visited a cacao plantation to see how handmade
chocolate is still produced; later we
visited a shop that sells only organic
tequila-Regalo de Dios-made from
10-year-old agave plants. Originating
in Jalisco, Mexico, this is not available in the U.S., so we did make a
purchase. Or two. Move over, Patron
... the real deal is from Jalisco. Day
5: we were quite excited to visit
the Mayan ruins of Kohunlich and
Dzibanche, in the Yucatan peninsula.
Sadly, my remembrance of fourth
grade history classes re: the world’s
explorers did not go into the devastating details of how the Spanish
Conquistadors completely ravished
and destroyed this once dominant
and beautiful society. During our
two-and-a-half-hour coach ride,
our guide also pointed out various
mounds and hills whose ruins will
not be excavated. And because it’s a
small world after all, we met folks
from Findlay, Ohio whilst enjoying a delicious, authentic Mexican
lunch at a local restaurant! Day 6:
Belize City, Belize, beckoned so off
we went for a jungle walk and cave
tubing expedition on the Cage River!
This was quite fun, especially with
new friends Cathy and Mark joining
us to enjoy the beautiful 75-degree
weather. Day 7: we berthed in Santo
Tomas, Guatemala, and our tour
began as a boating exploration on the
Rio Quinto River, one of the most
beautiful waterways we’ve ever traveled. Along the way we spotted dolphins, egrets, blue herons, parrots
Mosaic statue in Montecristo, Ecuador dedicated to their famous hat weavers
and other birds. Our highlights included a visit
to an indigenous Mayan river community, a fresh
shrimp lunch, folk dancing and exploration of the
tiny Mayan fishing village of Livingston; further
down the river, we stopped at a private boarding
school on the river, exclusively for children of the
river communities. It is funded through a nonprofit business in Chicago. This was also a special
treat for the students, as they do not have much
interaction with people outside their communities. I got to practice un pequito Spanish, and try
my hand at making a corn tortilla … thankfully the
students weren’t depending on me for lunch! Day
8: this was an easy, welcomed beach day for us in
Roatan, Honduras; we tendered off the ship then
boated over to the island of French Key for some
relaxation and fun in the sun. Spotted a few fish,
crabs and a baby barracuda offshore. And that’s
why I wear water shoes. Day 9/10: at sea, then on
to Puerto Limon, on the east coast of Costa Rica!
We opted for the seven-hour Rainforest Extravaganza, which hiked us through a private reserve
dedicated to the preservation of the area. The
butterfly sanctuary was so beautiful, with many
examples, and with a small museum lab dedicated
to their existence. A tram ride then took us to the
350 steps spiraling to a beautiful waterfall ravine,
and of course who goes down, must trek back up …
we finished with a boat ride along the Moin River,
looking for wildlife. This time we spotted sloths,
howler monkeys, a toucan, various sandpipers,
herons, iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards, an elusive
caiman and the semi-ferocious leaf-cutter ants;
seems like they’re everywhere in Central America,
and you must use caution not to step close to their
fairly huge mounds. And do not poke them with
your walking stick. Just sayin’.
Mayan steps in Kohunlich ruins near Costa Maya, Mexico
Rainforest tram ride in Costa Rica
Almost through the Panama Canal heading to the Pacific Ocean
Coastal Mira Flores in Lima, Peru
Cage River cave tubing in Belize
Day ll: the ‘Bridge of the Americas’ has
arrived! Going through the Panama
Canal was just about an all-day eventvery interesting, and much to see; our
ship pays $175,000.00 one way for the
privilege of having an assigned time to
use the canal; larger ships can pay as
much as $300,000.00. Enjoyed yet another gourmet dinner with new friends
Serena and Tom, and then went to
dance the night away on the deck …
Canal Party! Day 12: we had no tour
at the port of Fuerte Amador, near
Panama City, but we did walk several
miles and saw participants of a triathlon taking place. Enjoyed a nice lunch
at the wharf, and took advantage of
their free wi-fi, our first since the trip
started. Day 13: another poolside day
at sea, but with a special twist, because
we had crossed the equator during the
night. All ships who cross must celebrate in some way, to ensure smooth
sailing. The Regatta hosts a ‘King
Neptune Ceremony’, to bless all of us
‘polliwogs’ crossing for the first time,
and turn us into proper ‘shellbacks’.
This means you must sit in front of
King Neptune (the Captain), get slimed
(it was actually runny cake batter) and
then kiss the fish (yes, it was a real
tuna and very large). Of course we did!
Day 14: we docked in Manta, Ecuador
(tuna capital of the world), and had a
really fun excursion to Montecristo,
home of the original Panama hat. We
went via Chiva bus, the open colorful
buses once used locally for transportation of not only people, but livestock
and whatever else they could fit in or
on top of the bus! This time we had a
lively band playing on top, and we were
all given Ecuadorian kazoos (whistles)
to add to the merriment! There are no
hat factories-only individual families
who do the weaving, and it was so
very interesting to watch this intricate
process. We love our genuine Panama
hats! Catherine, on the entertainment
team, invited Serena, Tom, Ron and
me to dine at her table that evening,
and a good time was had by all. After
the nightly show, the party continued
in the Regatta Lounge … Day 15: we
berthed in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest
city aka the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ and
the nation’s main seaport. We opted to
stay on ship for a little R&R-lol.
Day 16/17: another sea day and
scheduled to dock in Salaverry, Peru,
but due to high waves at the port, we
were not permitted to come ashore;
luckily we never experienced whatever caused that issue. We did see
thousands of tuna and numerous
dolphin pods -- amazing! The entertainment team put on a wonderful
farewell show that evening, and the
party continued! Day 18: we arrived
in Lima, Peru, to enjoy our final day of
the cruise. We shared a cab to check

out the JW Marriott, overlooking the
Costa Verde highway in Mira Flores,
a beautiful, very hilly area along the
coast. It was amazing to watch the
untethered parasailers … they took
off on one of the cliffs, and then used
air currents to sail around before
returning to their launch area. We
hiked a couple of miles down to the
beach, had lunch and cervezas in
the upscale Galeria shopping center,
then returned to the ship. Time to
pack and say goodbye … Day 19: farewell to a truly wonderful cruise and
all who made it so, new friends and
cheers to wonderful memories madeso far. Many will disembark and go
to Machu Picchu via the cruise line’s
tour … but do we have other plans!
Back to the JW Marriott for the
night, then on to ‘Part Two of Our
Most Excellent Adventure’, which
includes about three more weeks
visiting South America. Pura Vida!

Marley is king in our castle, but he is very friendly with all the
little, cute dogs on our street. He treats everyone in the household differently. He loves walks but knows which human walks
the longest, the slowest, and the fastest. He also knows who to
sit by during the family dinner. Dad! He used to have a favorite
toy that looked like a stuffed Dracula. Now any squeaky toy is
referred to as Dracula.
He likes any dried dog food that is on sale at Kroger. He also loves
bread which we know is not good for him. White, not wheat. His
favorite snacks are Greenies, which luckily help with his breath.
Marley eats like a cat, which make sense because his foster mom
mostly raised cats. Nibbles at food, stares at you if you give him
table scraps that are not pre-cut, doesn’t scarf food down in one
bite (except pizza) and can eat off a fork.
Marley likes to lean on people with his whole body and stand on
your feet. If you stop petting him too soon he will swat you with his
paw to encourage you to continue. Being part St. Bernard, Marley
likes to lie around with his front paws crossed over each other and
luckily for us does not drool. He has collie ears which often give
away his thoughts as they go up and down as his facial expressions.

though she knew that bigger dogs were harder to adopt she decided to take him in and be his foster mom. We had recently lost
our first family dog Brutus. We started a casual internet search
for a new furry friend, when Marley’s picture popped up on the

lovable, gives great big hugs, friendly and would make a great
family pet. That description still holds true after nine years.

- multiple floods, landslides and the Great Depression, to name a few. Through it all, the store and its
recognizable front facade remained an unmistakable landmark in Northern Kentucky culture.
A devastating fire was reported about 9:15 p.m.
last night and at about 11:30 p.m. firefighters
pulled down the picturesque facade of the store.
Later, the front sign of the store was salvaged
from the wreckage and stored in a nearby barn.
The fire that began inside the iconic general store
late Saturday night was too much for the old,
mostly-wooden structure, however. It burned
throughout a nearly five-hour firefight in nearsub-zero temperatures and was destroyed.
The store had been in continual operation since 1831,

World Headquarters of Colonel De Herbs & Spices for the “Rabbit Hash Bash”
event on March 12, 2016. This community event was created to help rebuild
The Rabbit Hash General Store, which perished in a devastating fire on February 14, 2016. The General Store has been in existence since 1831. The Store
is listed on the National Registry of Historical places. The Landmark houses
memories for not only locals but also people from all over the country. Included in that group was local business owner, De Stewart of Colonel De Herbs
& Spices. He felt compelled to help after learning the General Store was a
complete loss and insurance coverage was minimal.
28 Triple Crown Life • May 2016
“I was completely heartbroken after learning the
news from my dear friend Don Clare,” remarks
De Stewart, the founder of Colonel De Herbs &
Spices. Don Clare, President of the Rabbit Hash
Historical Society, and Colonel De have spent
many weekends together making and listening to
music in Rabbit Hash. “We are so thankful for this
event and all the support we have been receiving
since the fire,” states Don Clare of the Rabbit Hash
Historical Society. “We can’t thank Colonel De
and all these people here who have taken time out
of their day to stop by and share stories with us.
This is over the top.”
Guests enjoyed live local music from bands such as Mack West, Pappy’s Jam
Band and Serenity Fisher & Michael Ronstadt under the Big White Tent. All
of the fabulous food was donated and the Rabbit Hash Bash was fortunate
enough to “christen” local restaurant owner Jim Dandy’s newest smoking pit
for the pig roast. In attendance were Northern Kentucky Locals, elected politicians and media who have a passion for Rabbit Hash and the General Store.
The live and silent auctions incorporated local specialties to local experiences. There were many items up for grabs from the remains of the Rabbit
Hash General Store that were recreated into memorabilia. Artist’s renderings, as well as photographs were amongst the most popular items up for
bid. A featured item was a painting by Food Network star Chef Loreal a.k.a.
“The Butcher Babe” who is not only a chef but an artist as well. Chef Loreal
painted a picture of the Rabbit Hash General Store during the event. A formal
check presentation is in the works that will take place in Rabbit Hash, KY …
Stay tuned!
About The Rabbit Hash General Store
In a world that seems to be changing constantly, the Rabbit Hash General Store
is a heaping slice of Americana from another era. A working general store
since 1831, the Rabbit Hash General Store is the heart of historic Rabbit Hash,
a quaint little Northern Kentucky river-town whose fortunes literally have
risen and fallen with the waters of the Ohio River.
February 14, 2016: In its approximately 185 years in existence, the Rabbit Hash
General Store in Boone County withstood all manner of threats to its existence
About Colonel De Herbs & Spices
De Stewart learned at his mother’s apron strings.
During the ‘50s and ‘60s his house seemed to be
one of the hubs for the Hillbilly Diaspora that
was taking place. People would show up at the
house, everybody would hug, and then the women
would attack the kitchen and cook wondrous and
magical things. He learned a lot by observing but
had the feeling there could be more to it than just
salt, pepper, and lard. Later De went on a pursuit
to learn all he could about herbs and spices. This
exercise culminated in the creation of his first
book, which was an e-book, titled, All About Herbs
& Spice. The book is an encyclopedia of culinary
herbs and spices.
In Northern Kentucky, when De had a cable cooking show, he was known as the “Businessman
Chef”. He was a founder of the Madison E-Zone
(a technology incubator), served on the Northern
Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Executive Committee for several years,
served on the board and was Chair for two years on
the Workforce Investment Board (covering an eight
county region). Now with stores in Historic Findlay
Market, Jungle Jim's at Eastgate, The Friendly
Market in Northern Kentucky and now their World
Headquarters located in Ft. Thomas, KY, De is
simply known as “The Colonel”. Proud to be a
Kentucky Colonel, he really doesn’t mind. The store
boasts over 500 herbs, spices and blends. Colonel
De even provides consulting and produces custom
blends for over 50 chefs and/or restaurants. For

Eye Position
Written by Wayne Oien, PGA Director of Golf, Triple Crown Country Club
The proper putting setup is an important ingredient in a golfer’s success.
Setting the eyes in the correct position is one of the critical factors that
is often overlooked. On that subject,
there are two schools of thought.

One method is to set the eyes directly
over the ball, along the target line. If
you putt this way, a center-shafted
putter is probably the right tool to
Director of Golf, Wayne Oien
use. With your eyes directly over
the ball, you are setting up to take the putter straight back and
straight through, never deviating from the target line. A centershafted putter is made precisely for this type of stroke because
the club head is balanced to swing like a pendulum. Brad Faxon
and Mark O’Meara putt this way.
The other technique is to situate your eye line inside the target
line so that you look out toward the ball. If you’re more comfortable in this position, a heel-shafted putter is probably best. Ben
Crenshaw and Lee Trevino have had tremendous success with
this method over the years. When Crenshaw putts, for example,
his putter head swings slightly inside the line, squares up at
impact, then swings back inside on the follow through, much like
the arc on a full swing. The putter head effectively swings like a
door opening and closing on a fixed hinge. The fact that the shaft
is in the heel of the club head helps accomplish this stroke but
timing is at a premium.
To discover which stroke is best for you, be sure to experiment
with your eye line setup, but make sure to have the right tool in
your hands to complete the job.

Celebrating Our 75th Year Anniversary In April Of 2016
In 1941 William Hagedorn was the milkman in Erlanger and did
lawnmower repair on the side. During WWII Maytag stopped
building washing machines and started building pistons for the
B 17 bomber. They continued making washing machine parts so
William, aka Bill, would order all the parts to the Maytag washers and then would build them himself. After the war he opened
up his own shop called Hagadorns, and began selling washing
machines and lawn mowers.
Currently Hagedorn carries the
following product lines: Maytag,
Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Electrolux,
Bosch, subzero, Whirlpool, Samsung.
Napoleon Grills just to name a few.
We are celebrating our 75th Year
Anniversary in April of 2016 - and all
year long!
The "Maytag Man" And Tony Terlau
Jay, Bill's son, took over Hagedorn Appliances in the 1960s after
Bill’s death and built the second store, which is located in front of
the old store. In 1982 Jay sold the business to Tony Terlau and
Tony’s wife Sherry (Hagedorn) Terlau. They owned it until 1996
when Rich Kopser took over. In 1992 Hagadorn became a full appliance store, leaving lawnmowers behind.
Hagedorn beats the box stores in customer service and is still
very competitive when it comes to pricing. We keep our costs
down because we have been a part of a buying group for 22 years.
Our sales team has over 170 years of experience in the appliance
industry. We service everything we sell, with our service team
having over 160 years of experience. Our customers are much
more educated when they walk in the door about what they want.

Ryle High School has an excellent sports program, but sports are
not all Ryle excels in. Alongside Ryle’s Theatre and Art programs, Ryle has an excellent Choral Program. Numerous high
schools have choir programs, but few have ones as prestigious as
Ryle High School’s A Cappella Ensemble. Their specialty involves
plucking harmonies out of the air, as they learn songs with no
instrumental music to guide them. They perform with no piano
or guitar, just a conductor and voices of twenty-four girls. Every
girl has auditioned to be a member of the group; they are all hard
workers with a passion for singing. They work every day to learn
complex harmonies and rhythms.
Every year the choir performs throughout the state, attending
competitions, festivals, and retirement homes to entertain audiences and grow as a choral program. This year, they attended the
“Choir’s of America” vocal music event, which took place in New
York City. For three days, the choir attended rehearsals, workshops, and performances all around the big apple. Then, Ryle
High School’s choir was able to perform inside Carnegie Hall, a
huge honor in the music world.
Ryle High School’s A Cappella choir is a fun, challenging class
recommended for anyone who loves music and singing. Alongside
A Cappella Ensemble, Ryle High School offers “mixed choir”,
a fun class that can act as a springboard into A Cappella. It is
also an excellent way to achieve an arts credit, as no audition is
required for mixed choir.
Ryle High School has a fabulous sports program, but sports
join the arts as an impressive facet of Ryle’s impressive history. Ryle High School’s choral program is a fun, exciting, and
challenging course that has grown tremendously in the past five

Making Sports FunKeeping Kids Healthy
Dr. Robin Warner
By Resident and Pediatrician, Dr. Robin Warner
Recently, Dr. James Andrews, one of the nation's
foremost orthopedic surgeons, offered the following
advice. “The best medicine to help prevent youth
sports injuries is to avoid playing year-round and
not to specialize in one sport.” To this, he added,
“And, don't approach a child's athletic pursuits like
he is a miniature version of Tom Brady or Lebron
James. Don't treat 6-and 7-year old kids like they're
professional athletes. They're not ready for that level
of high-intensity training.”
He noted that youth sports are the leading cause of adolescent injuries, with 3.5 million children under the age of 14 being treated
annually for sports-related injuries. He advised against playing a
single sport year-round. Ideally, he recommended three-to-four
months off per year, with a minimum of two months off. In addition to injuries, 60-70 percent of kids drop out of sports by 13
years, due to parental, peer, or coaching pressure.

and kids have their own expectations—which have to be considered equally to yours.
Set realistic goals for your child, the team and the coaches
Emphasize improved performance is key, not just winning
Resist the temptation to recreate or reinvent your own athletic past
through your child. Stay focused on your child’s unique abilities,
interests and goals.
Maintain a positive attitude, and don’t yell at other players,
coaches, or officials.
Be a role model. Show respect and your child will follow
your example.
Communicate openly. If you disagree with a coach’s approach or the
behavior of other parents, discuss it with them respectfully at an
appropriate time and place.
Here are some tips, from www.stopsportsinjuries.org, to
help parents:
Most parents who watch their kids in athletic events have seen an
inappropriate action involving a coach, player or another parent.
To some sports are all about winning, and the value of building
teamwork and increasing physical fitness can be lost in the drive
to come out on top. To overcome this pressure, it’s important
for parents to work together with coaches, athletes and other
parents to create a positive athletic environment. The following
tips can help:

training and equipment—for them to enjoy and succeed in athletics.
• From the first day of practice, work with the coaches and other parents to define and communicate clear goals, values and procedures
for everyone involved.
• Understand that some coaches in youth sports are volunteers
who are not professionally trained. A travel team and high school
coaches are more likely to be professionally trained and certified.

Call me to discover
your opportunites
If April showers bring May
flowers … then mint and herbs
can’t be far behind! There’s
nothing like being able to step
outside your kitchen door and
clip a little flourish to add to
your food or drink. I think my
ol’ Kentucky is home to the
most glorious spring display Mother Nature can paint in the U.S. of
A. This comes in particularly handy, as The Bluegrass State moves
to the international forefront the first Saturday in May -- it’s Derby
time! Louisville takes pride in hosting this celebrated event, and
while the party du jour takes place at Churchill Downs, the downtown landmark Brown Hotel will once again be the place to see and
be seen before and after the big race.
In the 1920s, dinner dances at the Brown Hotel drew more than
1,000 guests. During band breaks, hungry revelers refueled on
chef Fred Schmidt’s late-night eats. His signature? The Kentucky
Hot Brown, a pillowy cushion of toasted bread topped with sliced
turkey and an avalanche of Mornay sauce-all broiled until golden
brown. Crisp bacon strips and tomato added the final flourish.
In need of a little comfort? Tuck into this classic knife-and-fork
sandwich. If you’re not in the mood to cook, then I’ll suggest you
mosey on down to Warsaw and check out Jewell’s on Main. Their
version of the KHB is simply … fabulous! And, if you’re just not in
the mood for a Mint Julep this Derby Day, may I suggest my new
favorite libation: the Royal Filly. It will put a little giddy up in
your step.
Kentucky Hot Brown
• 4 thick white bread slices (can substitute other if you wish)
• ¾ lb. sliced roasted turkey
• Mornay Sauce (see below)
• 1 C shredded Parmesan cheese
• 3 plum tomatoes, sliced
• 8 bacon slices, cooked
• Fresh chives cuttings (optional)
Mornay Sauce: Melt 1/2 C butter in 3 qt. saucepan over medium
high heat. Whisk in 1/3 C all-purpose flour. Gradually whisk in
3 ½ C milk, bring to boil, whisking constantly 1-2 minutes, until
thickened. Remove from heat and stir in ½ C Parmesan cheese,
¼ tsp. salt and ¼ tsp. pepper. Preheat broiler with oven rack

6 inches from heat. Place bread on baking sheet and broil 1-2
minutes each side, until toasted. Arrange bread slices in 4 lightly
greased broiler-safe individual baking dishes. Top bread with
turkey. Pour hot Mornay Sauce over turkey and sprinkle with
Parmesan. Broil 3-4 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned.
Top each sandwich with tomato then bacon (garnish with chives)
and serve immediately. Four servings.
The Royal Filly
Fill a short glass with ice. Add 2 oz. club soda, 2 oz. Grey Goose
vodka and a splash of cranberry juice. Garnish with a slice of
lime (and a sprig of mint on Derby Day).

Don’t Skip
The Most
Important
Meal Of
The Day!
Written by N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe
healthy
living
With the demands of early morning meetings, getting Johnny and Jill to school, or just the hustle and
bustle of life, it’s easy to “forget” to eat breakfast.
After all, you can get your calories in later, right?
Not so fast. Before you head out the door without
some nourishment in your belly, think again. The
word “breakfast” is essentially about “breaking
a fast.” By the time breakfast rolls around, most
people won’t have eaten or drank anything for 10-12
hours. It is critical to eat something to kick start
your metabolism. But it’s even better when it is a
protein-packed, fiber-rich meal, which will help you
avoid blood sugar spikes.
Students have a lot to gain by chowing down on the
most important meal of the day. According to the
Food and Nutrition Service, eating breakfast can
improve academic performance and can help students do better on tests. But that’s just the beginning! Higher math scores, decreased absences, and
decreased tardiness are all tied to eating breakfast.
If you really want to maximize the potential of
breakfast, opt for a low-glycemic meal. Students
will be able to sustain attention longer in the classroom, improve memory, and even exhibit fewer
signs of frustration when accomplishing tasks. Get
their day started on the right foot with a veggie
omelet with cheese or an old-fashioned bowl of
oatmeal sprinkled with walnuts.
Did you know that eating breakfast can help overweight people lose weight? That’s right. Breakfast
has far-reaching consequences for those trying to
win the battle of the bulge. People who eat breakfast
generally consume the bulk of their calories before
5 p.m. – eating earlier in the day can aid weight loss.
One misconception in today’s world is that skipping
breakfast will help cut calories. Nothing could be
further from the truth. Those who skip breakfast
often indulge in more calories throughout the day.
According to the National Weight Control Registry,
eating breakfast is a daily habit for those who have
maintained a 30-pound (or more) weight loss for
a year or longer. Ninety percent of those surveyed
report eating breakfast at least five times a week.
Give your brain a boost with breakfast. Eating breakfast can enhance the speed of processing information
and reasoning. Not to mention increasing attention
and even creativity. So before you leave your home
with a growling stomach, do what’s best for your
body. Don’t delay – eat a healthy breakfast today!
