happy New Year. I hope you had a
wonderful Christmas and holiday
season, are rested up, and ready to
tackle the upcoming year!
We are starting out at a fast pace!
We have many events planned for
the next several months: Legislative
Day on the Hill, January Membership
Meeting with Sanjay Bhagchandani
presenting, New Members at the
Virginia Museum, Give Kids a
Smile and the Carl Misch all day
CE course. And that just takes us
through February! Please read this
newsletter closely and mark your
calendars!
Something that brought me joy
was the turnout for our November
Membership Meeting. There were 142
present! In addition to our members,
we had 20 students, 7 sponsors, the
VDA Officers and several guests.
I’m told that this was the largest
attendance EVER at a Richmond
Dental Society meeting!! Thank you such as these that are the best way
for coming in such numbers and to grow our membership. With this
for inviting new members to attend in mind, I would like to challenge you
with you. Also, thank you to those to pick up the phone and call a nonof you who sponsored students. We member dentist or a member who

2014-15 Budget
Presented by Claire Kaugars, D.D.S., Treasurer, and the Budget Committee
The Board of Directors presents the following 2014-15 budget after careful review and critical discussion. Our primary
recommendation is a dues increase of $50 due to a number of trends we observed: annual small percentage losses of members,
decreased participation in the RDS sponsored continuing education courses, decreased reimbursement from Virginia Dental
Services (the businesses with which the VDA has negotiated member use with membership financial reward), increasing meal
costs, and the employee compensation package. On an exciting note, vendor advertising/marketing revenue has increased over
the past several years largely due to Linda Simon’s diligence and rapport with the vendors. The Richmond Dental Society budget
is trim and very efficiently used—we accomplish very much with our budget!
How can each of us help maintain the budget? Continue your membership and be informed—membership value continues to
appreciate with local programs and programs and products available at the VDA and ADA levels. Read the RDS newsletter and
check out those VDA/ADA websites. Let’s enhance our local CE programs with fantastic speakers you have heard. You simply
need to forward the speaker’s name from your smartphone while sitting in a lecture and the RDS will work at bringing that speaker
to Richmond. If all of us take advantage of these local CE courses, as Norman Marks reminds us, it will bring more revenue to the
RDS and maintain our dues and actually be a cost savings to each of us in travel/hotels/food. Look to buy more products from
the Virginia Dental Services. The RDS will receive a sum of a percentage of those expenditures back into our treasury. Thank the
vendors who come to our meetings, and thank the vendors who support our meetings even if your only opportunity may be to say
thank you when they stop by your office. Both the RDS and VDA truly could not provide quality CE without vendor sponsorship!

November 18, 2013
Dr. Kit Sullivan, President, called the
meeting to order. Members present

There was a presentation from WSI
Digital Marketing about potential
options available for website, advertising
and digital marketing.
The Board
recommended that this be referred to the
Technology Committee for further review.
Dr. Claire Kaugars, Treasurer, gave the
Treasurer’s Report and discussed the
upcoming Proposed Budget which
was approved by the Board and will be
voted on at the January Meeting. Dr. Al
Stenger reported on behalf of the Audit
Committee and made recommendations
to the Board. Dr. Fred Certosimo gave
the ADA House of Delegates Report and
Dr. Lanny Levenson reported on behalf of
the VDA Board.

a giveaway for 2 children’s books written by
our own, Graham Gardner!
Dr. Claire Kaugars, Treasurer, gave the
Treasurer’s Report and announced that
the Proposed Budget was approved by
the Board and will be published in the next
Newsletter. The Budget will be voted on
at the January Membership Meeting. Dr.
Sullivan announced that the Audit Committee
has met and made their recommendations to
the Board.

available for the upcoming February 28th
CE with Dr. Carl Misch AND Registration
forms for GKAS on February 7th. We NEED
volunteers for GKAS! She also asked for
recommendations for the Harry Lyons Award.
Dr. Trisha Krause reported on the many
activities being put on by the New Member
and Membership Committees.
The Harry Lyons Award is the most prestigious Award given
by the Richmond Dental Society. The Award was first given
in 1981 to Dr. William B. FitzHugh. Since that time, there
have been 12 additional recipients:

Dr. Chris Richardson, Chairman of the
Nominating Committee, notified the members
that his committee will be working on the
Slate of Officers for the coming year. Anyone
interested, please notify him.

There was discussion about combining
the New Member and the Membership
Committees. The Executive Director,
Linda Simon, reported on Give Kids A
Smile and Vendor participation among
other things.
Dr. Sullivan made several announcements
and the meeting was adjourned.
We were fortunate to have three
representatives from the VDA at our
Membership Meeting. Dr. Ted Sherwin spoke
about the VDA activities and their focus for
the coming year and Dr. Mike Link discussed
the VDA Ad Campaign. Also with us was Dr.
Steve Forte, VDA Treasurer.
Dr. Sullivan introduced our speaker for the
evening, Dr. Will Perkinson who gave an
outstanding presentation on “Preventing
Endodontic Failures”.
The January Meeting will recognize Retired
Members. Our membership is varied and
we appreciate all levels of Membership! The
meeting was adjourned.

Report from your VDA Board
Lanny Levenson, D.D.S.
VDA Board Strategic Retreat
The Board held a strategic retreat
November 15 and 16. The focus of
the meeting was to develop a plan
for the next year to make the VDA
more relevant to and proactive with
the membership. The VDA directors
and officers were present along
with several past presidents, the
membership and young dentists
committees, Dr. Dickinson, VDA
staff, Joel Rubin with Rubin
Communications and the facilitator
John Sarvay with Floricane.
The strategic plan was broken
down into the following areas and
tasks for 2014
1.Leadership Development:
a. Identification of leadership

12th Annual Give Kids A Smile® - Friday, February 7, 2014

Richmond Dental Society in conjunction with the American Dental Association, Virginia Dental
Association Foundation and VCU School of Dentistry are participating in the 12th Annual Give Kids A
Smile® program on Friday, February 7, 2014.
Since 2003, over 7,000 Richmond area children have received desperately needed dental treatment
thanks to numerous dedicated dental professionals and other volunteers. Many of those who
participate in GKAS suffer from mild to severe tooth decay and oral diseases. For some, this is their
first experience with dental care.
Dentists, hygienists, assistants, administrative staff, dental and hygiene students and non-dental
individuals are needed to volunteer 8:00 am to approximately 2:00 pm. Children are scheduled 9:00
am through 12:30 pm and will receive a visual exam, toothbrush prophy (cleaning), fluoride varnish
and oral hygiene instructions. Volunteers are requested to arrive no later than 8:30 am to sign-in and
receive instructions. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Tyler Ball is a practicing general dentist in Richmond,
Virginia. He was born and raised in Honaker, Virginia,
a small rural town located in the southwestern corner
of the state. As a teenager, Dr. Ball spent many hours
shadowing his dentist father, Steve, who provided the
initial interest to pursue a career in dentistry. After
finishing high school in 2004, he attended RandolphMacon College in Ashland, Virginia where he was a
member and captain of the Football team. In 2008, Dr.
Ball graduated from Randolph-Macon with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry
and Religious Studies. He claims that his four years at
Randolph-Macon are the best years of his life, primarily
due to the meeting of his future wife.
Dr. Ball received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree
from Virginia Commonwealth University School of
Dentistry in 2013, where he was awarded the American
Academy of Implant Dentistry certificate of recognition.
He is currently a member of the American Academy of
Implant Dentistry, American Dental Association, Virginia
Dental Association, and Richmond Dental Society.
After receiving his dental degree, Dr. Ball decided to
stay in the city of Richmond and practice. He currently
works at Jessup Family Dentistry and enjoys going to
work everyday. Dr. Ball loves what general practice
has to offer and enjoys performing procedures of the
various disciplines.
Dr. Ball was married in June 2013 to his wonderful wife,
Nicole, who serves as a Chaplain at Mary Washington
Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The newlywed
couple currently resides in the Richmond museum

What is Peer Review and how can it help me?
Peer review is the evaluation of work performed within a field of work by those same members of that field. It is a way to selfregulate the quality of work performed by a profession. Many professions have a peer review process. It is seen in the fields of
medicine, law, engineering, and aviation to name a few. Our own ADA, VDA, and RDS have a peer review process.
Peer review is a voluntary, informal mediation process that allows a patient to have their case reviewed by another group of
dentists with no costs to the patient or dentist. A patient’s alternative might otherwise be to contact the Board of Dentistry or an
attorney. The peer review process can be less antagonistic, less stressful, and does not take action against the dentist’s license
or access fines.
A patient contacting the local dental society where the treatment in question was performed initiates the peer review process.
If the dentist in question is a member of the society, then a mediation form is completed. The peer review committee chairman
reviews the complaint and determines if the case is eligible for review. The peer review committee will obtain records, review
those records, and perform a clinical examination if deemed necessary. If the committee recommends a monetary award, it is
limited to the fee charged by the dentist for the treatment in question as a refund or an adjustment. If the dentist is not found
at fault, the committee will then educate the patient as to why. Hopefully this education process will prevent the patient from
seeking a litigation route or contacting the Department of Health Professions.
