Celebrating the 40th anniversary of their

When The Specials reformed in 2008
for a one-off surprise performance at
the Bestival Festival, few would have
banked on the band still playing to huge

An evening of stirring themes. The
famous horn calls of Sibelius’s Fifth
Symphony were inspired by swans flying
overhead. The quiet, dignified opening
of Brahms’s Violin Concerto rises up into
a swelling theme, setting the tone of the
work’s intimate grandness. The concerto
is performed by Latvian violinist Baiba
Skride, who has been described by The
Guardian as “a passionate, heart-on-sleeve
player”.
Opening with Vaughan Williams’ lush
and unmistakably British Fantasia on a
Theme by Thomas Tallis, this programme
moves on to Vaughan Williams’s teacher,
Ravel, whose expansive Piano Concerto in
G is performed by Swiss pianist Francesco
Piemontesi. The first ever recording of
Walton’s Symphony No. 1 – one of the
most enduring of English symphonies –
was made by the Philharmonia in 1953,
conducted by the composer himself.

Russian-themed programme culminating
with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5,
famous for its memorable melodies and
‘fate’ motif, which weaves throughout
the symphony in different guises, from a

violinist Sergey Khachatryan performs
one of the most virtuosic violin concertos
in the repertory, by Jean Sibelius.

Wagner’s opera The Flying Dutchman (Der
Fliegende Holländer) takes on the myth
of the ghost ship fated to spend eternity
at sea, while fate knocks on the door in
opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,
arguably the most famous moment in the
history of orchestral music.
Performed by superlative pianist
David Fray, Schumann’s evergreen
Piano Concerto was premièred by the
composer’s wife, Clara, on New Year’s
Day 1846. A lifelong friend of Robert
and Clara Schumann, Brahms wrote his
Third Symphony during a summer spent
holidaying on the Rhine. Playing through
her two-piano version, Clara wrote to
Brahms: ‘All the movements seem to be of
one piece, one beat of the heart.’
