sit on. Is that poo? Can we go home?” But things have changed. Now she has outside
slippers. She can tell a chaffinch from a tit (hey). But she still can’t tell if it’s an owl or
her husband’s asthma.

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Fantasia on a

RAVEL Piano Concerto in G
WALTON Symphony No. 1
An evening of stirring themes. The
famous horn calls of Sibelius’s Fifth
Symphony were inspired by swans flying
overhead. The quiet, dignified opening
of Brahms’s Violin Concerto rises up into
a swelling theme, setting the tone of the
work’s intimate grandness. The concerto
is performed by Latvian violinist Baiba
Skride, who has been described by The
Guardian as “a passionate, heart-on-sleeve
player”.
Opening with Vaughan Williams’ lush
and unmistakably British Fantasia on a
Theme by Thomas Tallis, this programme
moves on to Vaughan Williams’s teacher,
Ravel, whose expansive Piano Concerto in
G is performed by Swiss pianist Francesco
Piemontesi. The first ever recording of
Walton’s Symphony No. 1 – one of the
most enduring of English symphonies –
was made by the Philharmonia in 1953,
conducted by the composer himself.

Ben Gernon opens the season with a
Russian-themed programme culminating
with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5,
famous for its memorable melodies and
‘fate’ motif, which weaves throughout
the symphony in different guises, from a
funeral theme to a triumphant march. In
the first half, the outstanding Armenian
violinist Sergey Khachatryan performs
one of the most virtuosic violin concertos
in the repertory, by Jean Sibelius.

SWAN LAKE
THE NUTCRACKER
The greatest romantic ballet of all
time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s
haunting and unforgettable score. From
the impressive splendour of the Palace
ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans
glide in perfect formation, this compelling
tale of tragic romance has it all. From Odile,
the temptress in black tulle as she seduces
the Prince by spinning with captivating
precision to the spellbound purity of the
swan queen, Odette as she flutters with
emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette/
Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable
technical challenges.
The critics said…”The production is a
triumph.”
This most famous of fantasy ballets for
all the family begins as night falls on
Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall outside,
the warm glow of the open fire sends
flickering shadows across the boughs of
the Christmas tree and all the presents
beneath. When midnight strikes we are
swept away to a fairy-tale world where
nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring
to life, the Mouse-king and his mousearmy battle with the Nutcracker Prince and
we travel through the Land of Snow to an
enchanted place where the magic really
begins...

The most poignant of all classical ballets
is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling
and heart-rending tale of love, treachery
and forgiveness from beyond the grave.
The moving story of delicate Giselle and her
aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht
is set to a glorious score. From the visual
splendour of the rustic villagers happily
gathering the harvest at the start of the
story to the eerie moonlit forest haunted by
beautifully drifting spirits, this production is
unforgettable.
