e-Luminate Cambridge Festival e Luminate min Festival Cambridge Festival 12–17 Feb 2016 Discover the city in a new Light www.e-luminatefestivals.co.uk e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 1 ® Curator’s introduction The e-Luminate Cambridge Festival is an annual event run entirely by volunteers. It is for the local community of Cambridge as well as to bring people to our city to explore its fascinating history whilst looking towards the future. In conjunction with the wider Festival programme, it involves local businesses, opening their doors and making Cambridge a destination. As a volunteer led organisation, every penny we receive from the public, businesses and donors goes towards creating the Festival. So they deserve a big ‘thank you’ from the whole community. For this year’s edition, we worked with some incredibly talented artists based in East Anglia, the UK and across Europe who created a series of artworks specifically for Cambridge. The theme, Connecting Lights, creates a connection between the various parts of a complex and diverse city that is fast changing yet still widely recognised as much for its history as for its new ideas, innovations and people. Gold Sponsors The programme comprises a number of commissions and special events that both mirror and exploit the way we live our online, connected lives; where technology creates both benefit and risk. The artists are addressing this in a series of conversations with iconic buildings in Cambridge. Each site will tell a story and will be connected to another site and story, through LightQuest, an interactive web-based game developed by Francesco Anselmo, a brilliant (excuse the pun) lighting designer at Arup. Silver Sponsors The e-Luminate Cambridge programme brings perspective to a number of issues relating to the future ecology of the city, regeneration, sustainable living, mobility and energy usage. In looking to the future, we are in some ways connecting to the past. The majestic buildings which are internationally recognised as a symbol of the academic enlightenment of Cambridge, become the stage for spectacular light installations. Bronze Sponsors Supporters ® The Festival offers opportunities for an interdisciplinary exploration of Light creating a living collection that shows the breadth of lighting practice across disciplines and contributes to the development of our understanding of light as a creative medium and its impact on our cultural history. Media partner Festival highlights include Senate House and Old Schools as imagined in geometric lines and kaleidoscopic colours by Susie Olczak. Ross Ashton adds his unique touch in the projection on the front of Senate House and the stunning Fitzwilliam Museum, celebrating their bicentenary in 2016, becomes animated with Light and colours. Another important anniversary is that of the Cambridge University Library with its imposing tower visible from miles out which will be bathed in colour by Philips Lighting. Proudly part of Other highlights I am truly looking forward to are our series of Light based workshops for the half term, in particular do not miss the Litre of Light activities, and the launch concert at Great St Mary’s – the best way to start your festival! 200 YEARS SINGAPORE I wish all visitors enjoy the experience and leave with a surprising new perspective on Cambridge, Light, and life. e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 3 Installations Illuminating the Heart of Cambridge Artist: Simon White Venue: Cambridge Judge Business School A Dates: 12-17 Feb Admire the architectonic features of this stunning building coming to life in the lighting scheme created by Simon White, a lighting designer with many years of experience in the sector. This is also the site of the Old Addenbrooke’s Hospital, which opened exactly 250 years ago in 1766. Dr John Addenbrooke left just over £4500 in his will “to hire and fit up, purchase or erect a small, physical hospital in the town of Cambridge for poor people”. A couple of major extensions were added to it until it became a necessary to move to a larger site in the south of the city (where Addenbrooke’s still remains today) and from 1984 the building was left empty. In 1991, generous benefactions from Sir Paul and Lady Judge, together with the Monument Trust, provided the funds for the construction of a building for the newly formed School. The architect John Outram was appointed to the project which was completed in August 1995, and officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Casting a Light Artist: Malgosia Benham Venue: Gonville and Caius College D Dates: 12-17 Feb Colour Collection Artist: Gabby Shawcross Venue: Fitzwilliam Museum B The lighting solution for Gonville & Caius will encompass the historical features of the College, complementing the structure, creating a link throughout the selected scenes. The lighting scheme is playful, having a modern edge utilising energy efficient LED technology, whilst being sympathetic to the building’s history. Dates: 12-17 Feb A celebratory moving lights show on the stunning portico of the Fitzwilliam Museum in their bicentenary year. For this piece the artist has selected and sampled 200 colours from objects in the museum to create the colour palette for the lighting. The Source of Enlightenment Artist: Mike Moreton Venue: University Library C Dates: 12-17 Feb For the installation at University Library, Philips is providing Mike with a state-ofthe-art LED lighting system to illuminate the building’s façade. The dynamic colourchanging lighting is designed to highlight the buildings architectural features 4 e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 5 Installations The Light Hub Artist: Ian Kirby Venue: Great St Mary’s Church F Dates: 12-17 Feb The title Light Hub is inspired by last year’s pop up gallery in Parker’s Piece as Great St Mary’s is in 2016 becoming the centre for not just a wonderful installation by Ian Kirby, but also the backdrop to other main events in the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival. Twinkling Artist: Eleonora Nicoletti Venue: Great St Mary’s Church Garden F Dates: 12-17 Feb Venn Colour your City with light Artist: Ross Ashton/Susie Olczak Artist: Susie Olczak Venue: Senate House front Venue: Senate House/old schools E E Dates: 12-17 Feb Dates: 12-17 Feb Lines and shapes merge in this stunning projection by Ross Ashton featuring Susie Olczak. Reminiscent of the Venn diagrams, this piece is a tribute to John Venn, English logician and philosopher who studied at Gonville and Caius College. For the third year, Susie Olczak will collaborate with Pulsar for the creation of a low energy interactive light installation onto the façade of Senate House 6 e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 Twinkling is a dynamic, shimmering sculpture composed of upcycled CDs that are all interconnected through thin cables to form a wavy, suspended surface that continuously sparkles while trembling in the wind. e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 7 Installations Pong Regency Now Artist: Jack Beccegato and Carlo Fiorini Artist: Paul Butler Venue: Market Square Venue: Barr Ellison building G Mirage Artist: Visual Poke & Zero Kb I Dates: 12-17 Feb Dates: 12-17 Feb 2016 Jack Beccegato and Carlo Fiorini, an international duo of creators and pioneers in the arts and entertainment sector, are participating in this year’s e-Luminate Cambridge Festival with an interactive projection mapping called Pong. The Barr Ellison building is an elegant Regency town house. The artist’ concept of a colour uplift is to change the aspect of the streetside visualisation, from close quarters and across Parker’s Piece to make it stand out from the modernist Police Station and other similar buildings close by. Rather than going for a full colour pallet, Paul Butler has selected strong Regency red to start either side of the building , getting more and more purple blue to the centre with column uplighters in a bright cool white, and background wash to enhance the 3D effect of the entrance portico. Inspired by the much-loved Atari video game from the 70’s, the piece will be projected over the façade of one of the buildings in Market Square, and includes an interactive section where people living in that very building will have the opportunity to interact with the projection and play the game, as well as creating a large scale artwork for the public to enjoy. This entertaining piece aims to show how our daily use of light impacts on our surrounding environment and will be enhanced by a selection of projection mapping pieces from various light artists that are associated with the duo. 8 e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 Sequence Artist: Simon Cox Venue: Guildhall H Dates: 12-17 Feb A colourful sequence creating ripples of light onto the facade of the Guildhall. We are grateful to the Cambridge City Council for their continue support of the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival. Venue: Cambridge Judge Business School, weekdays 8am-6pm A Dates: 12-17 Feb A bespoke sculptural piece for TTP Group, based on their newly developed “Mirage” glass concept. The sculptural piece, simply called “Mirage,” will display imagery in a unique format, rotating sheets of the Mirage glass, will suggest facets of an overall piece of creative content…where the viewer seldom gets the chance to see the whole frame. The piece will be a mesmerising walk-round where the view will constantly change and you may never see the same combination of facets and image alike. The exceptional ability of the transparent Mirage glass to reflect light in front projection will be revealed through the dual projector format, displaying imagery on both sides of the glass simultaneously. Custom content creation by ZeroKB will bring the piece to life. e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 9 Installations Inner Light The Moon Seat Artist: Simon Fisher Venue: St Giles’ Church J Artist: Alexander Jenkins and Owen Hindley Dates: 12-17 Feb Venue: Cambridge Union This project aims to highlight a hidden gem of Cambridge: the Nave Windows of St Giles’ Church. The artist has picked out the 9 windows on the south side and lit them with powerful LED lights to make them shine, as the title hints, with an inner light. Dates: 12-17 Feb LightQuest K The moon has been the subject of many myths and numerous folklore tales throughout human history. We wonder at its mystical power over us or just marvel at its celestial majesty. However, we live in a time when artificial light is removing our innocent and perhaps naive relationship to the night, so employing artificial means to summon back ideas and notions outside of the norm feels appropriate. Join us for an illuminating quest around Cambridge. From 12th February til 17th February, an ideal half term activity. Around different sites in our city, we have placed some innovative creations; interactive lanterns that respond to Bluetooth technology. Each lantern is embedded with a beacon, and as you approach with your mobile phone with downloaded web based app, you will light up the lantern and have some information about the site delivered to your phone! The Moon Seat is a playful installation that draws the audience closer, entertaining our inner child whilst simultaneously courting long forgotten childhood fears. Participants will become instigators breathing life back into the myth, at once entertaining themselves, one another and all the while connecting through long shared stories and imaginings about the mysterious power of our ever watchful moon. A fantastic way to learn some facts and stories about our city, and marvel at the clever technology developed by Francesco Anselmo, lighting designer at Arup. The Competition We would like you to discover all or some of the e-Lanterns, and record your finds on your phone. Take a picture of you and perhaps your friends with the lantern, upload to our LightQuest Facebook page, tag with #LoveLight2016 and you could win a prize! All the sites have pledged a prize, and we will award these to the posts with the most likes. You might be lucky enough to PYRAMID win champagne afternoon tea for two at Hotel du Vin and other A scaffolding structure that holds a single ‘moon’ globe which acts as both ambient light and projector housing. fantastic prizes. Registration will be available from 12th February 2016. Visit http: http://bit.ly/1Qv4bNZ for instructions and start the fun! Lets kick off your quest at Great St Mary's Church. The journey can be completed at any time of day, but to maximise your experience, we suggest you wait until sundown. 10 e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 11 Installations Programme Itinerary Mirage by TTP Group, Visual Poke & Zero Kb Illuminating the Heart of Cambridge L ga Brunswick Gdn s oad el R Em m Anton Kan and Bernardo Pollak, at Jesus College R ad Ro POLICE STATION I st lS t m an ue Em Cla ren do nS tre et Ed en Str ee t Anglia Ruskin University Mumford Theatre S T H Pl ac e YMCA nv il le Fenner’s Cricket Ground Gr es ha m Hughes Mi ll R Hall oa d Len V Hil Lyndew ode Rd Wine Tasting at Gonville & Caius College X Trail of Light at Emmanuel College Y Kilowatt Challenge by Outspoken Cycles CUER Showcase – Solar Car Display ls R W oa d Cambridge Railway Station COE FEN Statio n Road by Cambridge University Eco Racing Team at Cambridge Museum of Technology To Addenbrookes Hospital Z Enter the LightQuest by scanning this QR code e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 I’m Laughing at Clouds by Daisy Farris Dance Collective Outside ARU Health Building, Young Street Cambridge University Botanic Garden 12 Electric Universe by Paul Malone at Cambridge Science Centre Ro Rd Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge Harnessing Light for Medtech by Richard Kirk, Victoria Revell at Cambridge Judge Business School U ad ld sfie Litre of Light by Mike Stephenson at St Giles’ Church F G Trail Of Light at St Catharine’s College Porters Lodge I Go Street Hobson Lo Lamento by Victoria Geaney, N Ea ane Tho m lP lac e Ro w Al bi on Po rtu Ro un d Q CINEMA Gwydir St d d ce rra t Te ee nt Str nt’s ge Re oa h am R ay eth W dR lan e Guided Tours at Guildhall main entrance E ge wn Elizab k Auc St P B C Re T sid Scott Polar Research Institute w ay e St nag et Downing College ad Ro Fitzwilliam Museum Pa rk urt Co A h A PARKSIDE POOLS nis L ig V PARKER’S PIECE e Str Pl rle Light Painting Workshop by Matt Widgery at ARU, East Road, Lord Ashcroft Building H THE GRAFTON CENTRE ria St Par ker St ’s rew in g Ear A Archaeology & Anthropology Museum Ten COE FEN SHEEPS GREEN LAMMAS LAND Pembroke College to n Peterhouse Stre et College The Moon Seat by Alexander Jenkins and Owen Hindley at Cambridge Union St ke bro uare Elm Bu St har dS t l St Orc Vic to Fitzroy St Ne Parkw Sq Emmanuel College X d An St Zoology & Whipple St ing Science wn Museum Do Pem o Pars P H wn N CAMBRIDGE A N Y RE LIOCENT D AN E GR CAD AR B Fe n C au se at St Giles’ Church K J CHRIST’S PIECES t’sBUS STATION ris Chane L Do The Mill Pond Inner Light by Simon Fisher King Street Christ’s Z College N Road ket Newmar Westcott House g J Sidney Sussex L O y Cur F G etty ill P RD H Peas Q Jesus Lane B in mp Tru at Barr Ellison building Newnham College t yS ne Ridley Hall Sid Law Faculty U ADC Theatre St Catharine’s College R Queens’ College et tre M ne rS l La ve Mil Sil Museum of Classical Archaeology Sidgwick Avenue K Senate House E Clare College King’s College Harvey Court St rch K u Ch Arts & Craft Night Market at Market Square MIDSUMMER COMMON e Regency Now by Paul Butler Trinity Hall Queens’ College West Road Selwyn College at Guildhall I Garret Hostel Ln O Jesus College St ex en t uss Trinity Lane Gre rke e SSt Ro a sag t M se s tS W D Cr Pa arke es M Trinity St Kin gs Parad C St Johns St Sequence by Simon Cox t eS idg Br Robinson College Clare Hall nue Ave St H JESUS GREEN Make Your Own Hologram by Liza Read, Inaki Beguiristain at Makespace Y ria e en at Market Square l da Pong by Jack Beccegato and Carlo Fiorini Trinity College THE BACKS The Light Hub by Ian Kirby Twinkling by Eleonora Nicoletti at Great St Mary’s Church G St John’s College Q uee n’s R oad F Magdalene College St John’s College Venn by Ross Ashton/Susie Olczak Colour your City with lights by Susie Olczak at Senate House/Old S by TTP Group, Visual Poke & Zero Kb at Cambridge Judge Business School chools ag Casting a Light by Malgosia Benham at Gonville and Caius College E es Ch de ra Pa Westminster College ton ter S to Vic J M Open Air Pool e Lan rk Pa The Source of Enlightenment by Mike Moreton at University Library D Castle Mound M C t le S by Gabby Shawcross at Fitzwilliam Museum son sL St Edmund’s College st Ca Colour Collection w y Ro le el Sh Mo nt unt lesa P B ad n Ro terto s Che New Hall Launch Concert by Dowsing Sound Collective at Great St Mary’s Church anu by Simon White at Cambridge Judge Business School Ne A Events Luminous Solutions for Global Inequalities Christ’s College e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016 13 Events Arts & Craft Night Market Lo Lamento Venue: Market Square Venue: Jesus College O Dates: 13-14 Feb 3pm-8pm For the first time ever and for one night only, the creatives of Cambridge take over part of the permanent covered market stalls as part of the opening celebration for the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2016. The installation nurtures an arresting visual and physical dialogue through the flow and glow of soft blue bioluminescent arteries pumping air and life through the piece. The centrepiece is a glowing garment, damp and alive with bioluminescent bacteria, exploring potential body-garment interactions facilitated by a biological symbiosis. Glass orbs surround the garment, filled with bioluminescent bacteria, lighting the room and the audience with a soft blue glow.
