Festival set to blow its top

AWKINS—The 26th annual
Hawkins Oil Festival is set to
begin Saturday at 7 a.m. with
a waffle breakfast at the fire station to
benefit the Hawkins Volunteer Fire
Department.
Al and Pat Harris, festival cochairmen, invite the public to bring folding
chairs and enjoy the day’s festivities.
An arts-and-crafts show also starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 5
p.m. will take place behind
the City National Bank,
which is on the west side
of FM 14 a block north
of Highway 80.
A 5K fun run sponsored by the bank is
also scheduled for the

to be held in the pavilion behind the

The annual parade begins at 11

take place after the parade west of the
pavilion behind the bank.
The Hawkins FFA chapter will
play host to an ag show from 10 a.m.
until 2 p.m. at the Red Harris Pavilion
behind Hawkins Elementary School,
off FM 14 south of Highway 80.
The day’s events will include food
booths, all-day live entertainment and
party jumpers for kids.
The festival will culminate in a
street dance sponsored by Wood
County Electric Co-op from 7 p.m.
until 10 p.m. at the pavilion
behind the bank.
Why has Hawkins been
the site of an oil festival
for more than a quarter of
a century?
The community had a
population of 200 in October 1940, when former
lightweight boxer Bobby
Manziel made the first
major oil discovery in
Wood County, a wildcat
well 31⁄2 miles north of
town. Hawkins became
an overnight boomtown.
When later that same year independent operators Steve Rotundi and
F.R. Jackson hit oil within the city
limits, land prices soared and lots sold
anywhere from $500 to $10,000.
Humble Oil & Refining (later Exxon) became a principal driller in the
Hawkins field just north of town.
As late as 1960 the Hawkins Camp
(originally the Humble Camp), a
densely populated oil-refining area,
stood just north of the city.

Canned, frozen and dried tart
cherries are a welcome ingredient in just about any pantry. This versatile, nutritious fruit can play a tasty
role in a wide variety of meals.
For example, when the weather
turns crisp, here is a fun variation on
traditional cherry pie.
It can be a great addition to family
get-togethers, school gatherings,
even for a fall picnic.
It’s quick and easy to prepare, and
the ingredients are easy to have on
hand.
Cherry Crisp Pie
1⁄
4
cup (1⁄2 stick) butter or margarine
3⁄
4
cup quick-cooking or oldfashioned oats, uncooked
1⁄
2 cup all-purpose flour
1⁄
2 cup firmly packed light-brown
sugar
1⁄
2 cup chopped pecans, if desired
1⁄
2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 (21 oz.) cans cherry-pie filling
1 (9 oz.) prepared graham-cracker crust (10 inch)
Melt butter in medium saucepan.
Remove from heat and stir in oats,
flour, brown sugar, pecans, if desired,
and cinnamon. Spoon pie filling into
crust. Sprinkle oats mixture over top.
Place pie on a baking sheet.
Bake in a preheated 375-degree
oven 40-45 minutes or until topping is golden brown. Cool on
wire rack, then refrigerate at least
4 hours before serving.
Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Red sails in the sunset could not have been more romantic

was still pleased with my $65 part of

I did notice fellow bingo players
out across the waters in the wake.
They can fly up to 100 meters, sometimes dipping down and touching the
water before going airborne again for
another short flight or so.

OLLY LAKE RANCH—In last
week’s episode it was the early
morning of day three of our
seven-day Royal Caribbean cruise
aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas.
Early mornings are my favorite time
for writing. It’s a time when I find my
mind most fresh and many fewer distractions before the rest of the world
awakens.
As promised, I
carried juice, coffee and a roll to the
child bride, Roza,
and while I
watched a preview
of the day’s events
she got ready for
our leisurely breakfast at Windjammer Cafe.

choose the starboard side of the ship, as
close to the windows as we could get.
The plates are a large oval, maybe
more than a foot in length, and much
more adequate than necessary for us.
We are nibblers, choosing to take a
little bacon, maybe turkey sausage and
various fruits and rolls because you can
always go back and start over with a
new plate anytime.

leisurely breakfast we discussed the
day’s schedule.
Roza had decided to try her hand at
cash-prize bingo with the Bingo Boy
from Austin at 10 a.m.
He claims to have earned four
degrees from universities, but now here
he is calling balls aboard ship in a bingo
parlor.
He justifies it, though, because he
tells his mom he’s captain of the ship.
Actually, he is a little more than bingo
caller, probably assistant entertainment
director.
I noticed that he also takes part in
several of the musicals in the evenings.
We decided to take a tour of two or
three of the top decks, maybe check on
pictures that had been taken of us so far
on the trip.

real hassle aboard ship, but not anymore.
The Internet cafe on Level 8 is open
around the clock and is much too easy
to access. Any time of the day or night
you may just walk up, swipe your

After walking a couple of floors,
Roza and I parted company on Level 6
at the atrium (see the photo), from
which one can have a dissected view of

hours.
Again, Roza and I split up with a
promise to meet back on ship at a prearranged time.

Where’s Roza?
Upon my return to the ship, I
intended to rendezvous with Roza,
but she was nowhere to be found.
I first thought about going back
ashore, but what chance would I
have of finding her?
From Level 9 I looked in every
direction, but no Roza. So I returned
to our room.
Once inside I pulled back the curtains and looked out and, believe it
or not, there she was resting on a
park bench near the waterfront a few
blocks from the ship. I could not
believe my luck.
She had taken a wrong turn and
gotten lost and had been walking
away from the ship for the last couple of hours.
Fortunately, some kind soul got
her turned around and headed back
dockside.

a 12-story
huge ship in
the harbor,
but such was
the case. (See
