transition in move to Internet

RANSITIONS can be hard on peo-
ple, but they happen anyway.
After two years—109 weekly
issues—of publication, the newspaper you’re reading is in transition. It is
moving from ink and paper to the
ether of the Internet.
In some ways, that’s sad. Hundreds
of readers have written us over these
years to let us know how much
they love our paper. It
has a loyal core of
readers, many of
whom might prefer
that we stay in
print.
But a Web site
newly redesigned
and upgraded is a
cost-effective way to
reach our readers with all
the features, especially the
bargains of our classified
ads, that we’ve come to look
forward to every week.
Beginning this week, readers can
visit the Web site (www.tradersguideoftexas.com) to not only place free
private-party classifieds but, if they
like (and for a nominal charge), dress
them up in colorful borders, screens,
graphics and even animation.
Instead of the ads staying on newsstands for one week, classifieds submitted through the Web site will
remain up for a whole month.
We haven’t forgotten our substantial number of readers who do not
have computers. We will accept and
happily continue to publish classifieds submitted over our phone line,
through the U.S. Postal Service or by
fax. In trying to determine how best
to serve ad submitters who don’t have
ready access to computers, we decided to continue to support the triedand-true ways of submitting ads.
Since there is no practical way for
those advertisers to visit
the site and cancel their
ads in case the advertised items sell before
the month is out,
we decided to
specify that the
time the free private-party classifieds
stay online after being
submitted by phone, fax
or mail is one week
We are already constantly updating and improving the site. We welcome suggestions, letters to the editor, any kind of
feedback our readers might choose to
pass on to us in an effort to help us
serve them as best we can.
We encourage those of you who do
have computers to check with us at
least once a day to see what we—and
our advertisers—are up to.
It’s a time of transition, all right.

starts with a delicious pecan-bar mix.
You simply add dried cranberries and
some orange juice and zest, then bake

Pecan & Cranberry Orange Bars
1 package Krusteaz Pecan Bar
Mix (1 pouch each crust mix,
filling mix and pecans)

4 cup ( ⁄2 stick) butter or margarine, softened
3⁄
4 cup dried cranberries
1⁄
2 cup orange juice
1 egg
1 teaspoon orange zest
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place
crust mix in medium bowl. Cut in butter or margarine with a fork or pastry
blender until crumbly. Press crust mixture into lightly greased 8-by-8-by-2-
inch pan. Bake 8-10 minutes or until
edges begin to brown. Sprinkle pecans
and cranberries over crust. Set aside.
In medium bowl, whisk together
filling mix, orange juice, egg and
orange zest until blended. Immediately after stirring, pour gently over
pecan and cranberry layer. Bake 2832 minutes or until center does not jiggle when lightly shaken and top
begins to brown. Cool completely
before cutting. Makes 16 bars.
For an easy and elegant tart, press
crust mixture into bottom and up sides
of lightly greased 9-inch tart pan.
Bake at 350 degrees 14-16 minutes.
Set aside. Proceed as directed for bars.

Yesterday we were swimming
with the stingrays in Stingray
City, but this morning on day six of
our cruise we arrived at the island of
Cozumel, Mexico.
The cruise from the Grand
Caymans to Cozumel overnight
was uneventful.
Of course it
was uneventful.
We were asleep
the whole night
without a clue of
whether we were
at sea or solidly
planted on terra
firma.

This morning
Roza and I enjoyed a late breakfast,
late for us, as we watched the
Rhapsody of the Seas drop anchor
offshore of the Island of Cozumel
around 9:30.
We have scheduled a trip ashore to
snorkel off the coast of fabulous
Palancar Reef on this day. It is one of
the most beautiful coral reefs in the
Caribbean.
Since we had a couple of hours to
kill before snorkeling, we again
H
decided to do the tourist thing and
browse the small shops along the harbor.
It turned out actually to be more a
shopping trip than a buying trip for a
change.
The one sole exception was that I
purchased a black-and-white T-shirt
with a line drawing of three iguanas
standing at a bar in colorful Hawaiian
shirts.
When you bring it out in the sunlight it blossoms into a rainbow of
colors.
Grandson Brian would get a kick
out of that, I thought.

After about an hour we had seen
everything we needed to see, so we
wandered back to the dock and our
modern high-speed skiff, which
would take us to Palancar Reef.
Cozumel is Mexico’s largest
island, nestled only 12 miles off the
coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
It is 28 miles long but only 10
miles wide, with some of the most
beautiful white sandy beaches anywhere.
The climate is subtropical and the
original inhabitants were of Mayan
descent.
Cozumel was a sleepy little fishing
village until Jacques Cousteau
declared it one of the most beautiful
scuba-diving areas of the world in
1961.
The underwater life is abundant
and the clarity of the water means 100
level 50 or more yards away. Below right: This is a seashell our guide dove

to 200 feet visibility, depending on
the weather and season.
Everything needed, such as masks
and flippers, is provided, and newcomers are schooled in how to adapt
to the underwater world in minutes.
I have a small underwater Nikon
camera that, although suitable for
only depths of 10 to 12 feet, is perfect
for snorkeling.
I took one picture with the Nikon
just at water level and our skiff some
50 yards away looking as though it
had left us stranded. (See the photo on
this page.)
The water where we were snorkeling was some 75 to 100 feet deep, and
all were required to wear life jackets.
I find them to be cumbersome. Although we were required to wear them,
we were not required to inflate them.

should one wish
to dive down for
some underwater shots of aquatic life. (See the

beautiful conch
seashell with the
live conch still

All good things
One quickly loses all sense of time
on snorkeling voyages, with the
never-ending panorama always
fascinating.
However, all good things must at
some point come to an end, and, since
our good ship Rhapsody would be
hoisting anchor at 6 o’clock, we had
to leave the Palancar Reef.

The power of now
After dinner we finished packing
and set our bags outside the cabin.
Sunday morning we were at
dockside when we awoke and
disembarked the grand ship Rhapsody of the Seas by 11 for our trip
back to Holly Lake Ranch.
Both of us agreed it was one of
the most relaxing trips we had
experienced in a long time.
When cruising, we both are in
agreement that it doesn’t matter so
much where you travel. Much of
the adventure is not in the destination but in the journey.
For the price of less than $100 a
day, without the hassle of airports,
cruising offers elegant dining,
entertainment and a constantly
changing outdoor scenario whether you’re on top of the water or
underwater.
Currently Royal Caribbean has
the largest seagoing hotel afloat,
called The Freedom of the Seas,
which is supposed to have a capacity of more than 3,000 passengers.
We have not decided whether
so large a ship would be for us or
not. One might have to stay aboard
for a two-week sojourn just to find
out where everything is.
On the other hand, the thought
has some intriguing possibilities.
We wholeheartedly recommend
you try the cruising vacation at
least just once sometime during
your lifetime.
You may find what other seafarers have found down through the
ages: that there is something highly
addicting about sailing the high seas.

Magic light show
On our final day we mostly
lounged on deck and recovered
from a little too much sun exposure from the previous day.
That night, Saturday, we were
again entertained, this time with a
great troupe from Argentina called
Los Pampas Gauchos.
They put on a great drum and
dance performance with swinging
bolas and an incredible light show
called “Fluorescence” that was
purely magical.
The stage was in total darkness
while fluorescent animals and
puppets flew everywhere with
wild abandon.
Although we were sitting up
close, we had not a clue of how
they were able to pull the effect off
so flawlessly.
