USETEC (supported
by RESALE), the
world’s largest trade fair for
used machinery and associated
technologies, is set to take place
on 13-15 April in Karlsruhe,
Germany. The event thus returns
to its original date and runs at the
same time as the largest industrial
show in Germany – the Hanover

Sandvik wins Volvo award
Cutting tool and tooling systems expert
Sandvik Coromant has been honoured
by automotive giant Volvo Cars in the company’s
Awards of Excellence. The efforts of Sandvik
Coromant over the past year were rewarded in the
Special Recognition category after the completion
of several successful projects to reduce cycle times
and boost productivity and profitability. In 2014 a
total of seven projects with projected savings for
Volvo were identified and documented. Overall these
projects have not only improved quality and reduced
downtime, but extended tool life to deliver a 39.8%
saving in tooling costs.

open days at XYZ
XYZ Machine Tools is
hosting two open days
aimed specifically at the education
sector to highlight the benefits of

Mazak expands
parts centre
Yamazaki Mazak has
more than doubled
the capacity of the company’s
spare parts operations with
the opening of its expanded
European Parts Centre. Located
in Leuven, Belgium, the centre
has increased the company’s
warehouse capacity from 2700
m² to 4600 m², and is capable
of shipping 97% of 35,000
Mazak part numbers on the
same day. The new facility also
has the capacity to ship over
20,000 parts per month with
orders being processed 365
days a year. A second stage of
expansion to the centre is due
to complete in 2022, which will
increase warehouse capacity to
5528 m².

relocates

WNT invests to
make carbide
greener
WNT (UK) has
announced a groupwide recycling service to
customers using carbide tooling.
In a similar process to WNT’s
existing carbide drill regrinding
service, any customer wishing to
recycle old carbide can simply
contact WNT (UK) to receive
a green recycling box. When
full, the box will be collected by
WNT and sent for recycling. The
customer will then receive credit
on account based on a fixed price
per kilo of scrap carbide, which
can then be used to purchase
new tools from WNT’s range.
“We all know we should
recycle, but it is often seen as
a chore. Therefore we have
designed this recycling initiative
with simplicity and efficiency in
mind,” says Tony Pennington,
Managing Director, WNT (UK). “All
the customer has to do is e-mail
or telephone our office in Sheffield
and we will organise everything,
from delivery of the recycling box
to its collection when full.”

MTA names MACH sponsor
The Manufacturing Technologies
Association (MTA) has announced that
Lloyds Bank is to be the headline sponsor of the
largest event of its kind in the UK – MACH 2016.
The announcement sees Lloyds Bank sponsor
the event for a third time, further strengthening
the long term relationship between the bank and
the MTA, the organiser of the event. MACH takes
place every two years and in 2014 attracted over

Copper Alloys invests
in Danobat bandsaw
Stoke-based Copper
Alloys Ltd is a
specialist in the manufacture of
copper- and nickel-based alloy
materials, as well as cast, forged
and machined components for
engineers around the world.
The company is known for
its expertise in the defence,
aerospace and petrochemical
industries, supplying products
for use principally in the marine
environment, from oil rigs to
nuclear submarines.
After encountering speed
and accuracy difficulties with an
existing production bandsaw,
managing director John Dudley
says he knew exactly who
to call to solve the problem,
having previously purchased two
Danobat bandsaws from Prosaw
for similar applications.
The process in question
involved cutting cast aluminium/
bronze billets of up to 810 mm
in diameter. The billets are cast
adjacent to the cutting facility, to
where they are transferred on
cooling.
The machine specified by
Prosaw is a Danobat HDS8
bandsaw, which benefits from
the capability of an automatic
feed system that automatically
positions the billets in the correct
location for cutting following each
completed cut, thus facilitating
continuous production. This
is an important upgrade on
the previous system as the
Danobat machine requires little
or no operator interaction and
is reliable enough to operate
automatically for 24 hours each
day. In fact, aluminium/bronze
billets are now cut up to four
times faster than previously
possible.
The company’s
standardisation on Danobat
bandsaws has a further
advantage in that all three
machines now operate using
the same program, leaving the
operator free from the necessity
of reprogramming.
“We purchased our first
Danobat machine from Prosaw
10 years ago and have always
been delighted with the quality of
the machines and the excellent
service provided,” says Mr
Dudley. “The replacement of
our previous machine with
the Danobat means that the
improved speed and straightness
in cut will increase our yield and
significantly reduce the risk of
producing scrap products.”

Saw blade technology
goes mobile
LS Starrett has launched a mobile version
of its PowerCalc bandsaw selection tool,
which has been developed to help with choosing the
correct bandsaw blade for any specific metal cutting
application and provide guidance on the correct
blade size for a huge range of bandsaw machines.
Free to download and use from the Starrett website,
the original PowerCalc software is said to be
easy to install and runs on any Windows-based
computer device. Now, the PowerCalc app has been
developed to work on mobile device technology,
including handsets running Apple, Android, Windows,
and BlackBerry operating systems.
Starrett’s technical support team leader,
Graham Munro, explains that whichever version
of PowerCalc is used, the data required by the
software is straightforward and user friendly. “It
requires the composition of the material to be cut to
determine the hardness,” he says. “From a simple
table, the shape and size of the raw material to
be cut is selected and the details regarding any
bundling are input, along with the bandsaw being
used and if it is a cooled cut or not. This allows the
software to determine the optimum blade type that
should be used as well as the blade dimensions.

Along with the Starrett bandsaw blade, the
software will also display the recommended
operating information relating to the
number of break-in cuts, cooling
recommendations, and cutting time and
speeds under both break-in and normal
conditions.
“Choosing the right blade for the
job and applying the correct blade
speed and feed rate are really
important factors that directly
influence the performance and
life of the blade,” says Mr Munro.
“The PowerCalc software, used on a
desktop PC or mobile device, takes
the stress and strain out of blade
selection and application cutting
data.”

Circular saw blade
sharpener unveiled
Vollmer has launched
its CHC840 and
CHC1300 grinding machines for
the sharpening of carbide tipped
circular saw blades. With four
CNC controlled axes, the new
machines are said to provide
accurate grinding of virtually all
tooth geometries in a single cycle.
Furthermore, Vollmer says that
the flexibility and user friendliness
of the CHC840 and CHC1300
is provided via a new multifunction hand wheel that selects
and controls the axes through a
single module. The hand wheel
avoids operator error and can also
be used as a potentiometer to
conduct speed adjustments when
running in automatic mode. This
optimises machining times and
improves surface finishes through
the variable input of speeds for
different surfaces.

Bandsaw proves ideal
for tube cutting
The first bandsaw from
the new KASTOwin
range to be purchased in the UK
was delivered directly from its
launch at Kasto’s Milton Keynes
open house to Dyn-Metal, a
specialist bronze foundry and
machine shop in Acton, London.
Since the machine was
installed, it has been the
mainstay of the firm’s long
production runs of automatic
sawing-to-length of bronze
tube, used principally in bearing
production. The material is
used in ships’ transmissions, oil
and gas rigs, off-road vehicles,
cranes, steel mills, mining
equipment and machines in
general, including machine
tools.
The bronze alloys are
produced in six centrifugal
casting machines at the Acton
foundry, one of which is among
the largest in the UK, capable of
producing 2 tonne castings. The
phosphor-, lead-, aluminium- and
manganese-bronze tubes can
be cast up to 1.2 m in diameter,
although larger is possible
depending on length and weight.
However, most material is below
330 mm, which is why DynMetal chose a KASTOwin A3.3
bandsaw of that capacity.
Managing director Stephen
Capper says: “We supply
standard bronzes as well as
our own special varieties with
modified grain structures,
which result in bearings lasting
up to three times longer than
commercial castings of similar
composition. Self-lubricating
varieties with embedded solid
lubricant are included in our
range.
“Practically none of our
customers hold stock, so they
ask for quick delivery of material
to ensure that production
output is not interrupted,” he
continues. “To be successful in
this business, you have to be
competitive not only on price,
but also on order turnaround.
We needed another horizontal
bandsaw to replace an older
model of a different make that
was causing bottlenecks as our
order intake has returned to prerecession levels.
“When I saw the new
KASTOwin at the supplier’s
launch, the machine’s competitive
price, small footprint and ability to
tackle long automatic runs made
up my mind on the day, so I
placed the order there and then.”

In a development it
describes as continuing
to redefine the reciprocating
saw blade category, Lenox has
introduced a curved reciprocating
saw blade. The curved design,
T2 technology and precisionapplied titanium coating come
together in the new Lenox Gold
Power Arc curved blades to
deliver up to two times the cutting
life of standard Lenox straight
blades. The Gold Power Arc
curved blades are designed for
metal and wood cutting, as well
as demolition and extreme heavy
metal cutting applications.
“Lenox Gold Power Arc
curved blades are designed for
the heavy reciprocation user
who understands the value of
investing in a premium product
that will deliver superior cutting
performance,” says Matt
Savarino, brand manager for
Lenox. “These blades last
up to twice as long as
standard straight Lenox
reciprocating blades, allowing
trade professionals to be more
productive on the job, and
achieve more efficient results.”
The Power Arc’s curved
design is said to optimise the
cutting angle, allowing the blade
to cut aggressively and more
efficiently in comparison with
a straight blade. In a series of
laboratory tests using typical
reciprocating saw parameters,
Power Arc blades outperformed
competitive brands when cutting
materials such as nail-embedded
wood, black pipe, uni-strut and
other common construction
materials, says Lenox.
An aggressive blade design
and proprietary technologies,
such as T2 technology and a
titanium coating, enable Lenox
Gold Power Arc curved blades
to achieve extended life. T2
technology and the titanium
coating help to disperse heat – a
common reason reciprocating
saw blades wear out quickly,
allowing the blade to last longer.

Rapid line incorporates
carbide circular saw
The Rapid from Ficep is
a new high speed CNC
drilling line for angles and flats.
Ficep says that the machine’s
powerful spindles with their high
rotational and feed speeds,
enables the use of indexable
carbide drilling tools to enhance
productivity and cost efficiency.
Furthermore, a CNC materials
handling system loads angles on
to the conveyor track, which then
clamps the workpiece in position
automatically. Subsequently,
every process takes place
sequentially.
The two drilling heads
are equipped with direct drive
spindles and an automatic
toolchanger featuring six
positions for each of the
spindles. The CNC controls
spindle positioning and feed
rates, while linear guides with
controlled servomotors and
ballscrews ensure precision on
every axis, says Ficep. A new
additional auxiliary axis of 200
mm allows independent control
of the two spindles in the X-axis.
It is said that the independent
movement of the two auxiliary
axes maximises the productivity
achievable with each spindle
within the stroke.
Rapid CNC drilling lines
are modular and can therefore
incorporate scribing, hard
stamp marking, single or double
shearing or alternatively, a
high speed circular carbide
saw. Optional hard stamping
CNC marking units have eight
selectable cassette types, each
one including 13 characters.
Depending on the Rapid
model selected, fast cutting is
provided by either a single cut
hydraulic shearing unit or a high
speed circular saw with hardened
carbide inserts.
The processed angles,
scrap or swarf created after the
sawing or shearing operations,
can be offloaded automatically
at predetermined or selectable
positions along the unloading
area to reduce manual handling
and sorting. This further improves
the productivity of the process
with handling of components
being minimised.
Ficep says that the Rapid
offers faster drilling and scribing
speeds at minimum cost, slotting
in any direction, angle heel
milling, and other machining
features. With the option of using
indexable carbide drilling tools
the company says the machine is
one of the fastest on the market
today.

and the software-controlled
clamps can be adjusted without
tools. Consequently, the
machine is especially suitable
for companies that, in addition
to high volume jobs, must
also regularly process one-off
pieces.
A new controller delivers
better handling while the safety
hood offers work safety and
reduced noise emissions. The
energy consumption has also
been reduced: thanks to new
drive technology, the motor draws
only the amount of current it
needs (regardless of its power
rating) for the load it is handling.
This saves operating costs and
increases the service life of the
motor.

Elumatec unveils profile
machining solutions
Elumatec presented
new solutions for profile
machining at the recent BAU
2015 exhibition in Munich that
are aimed at companies in the
metal construction and industrial
sectors. A prime example of
this was the SBZ 628 for the
machining and length cutting of
aluminium profiles for windows,
doors and curtain walls.
Elumatec says the SBZ
628 is pitched at users who
want to reach the next level of
productivity using automation, but
don’t want a high-end machine
to do so. Thanks to the rotating
milling spindles and infinitely
variable pivoting saw, the SBZ
628 can accomplish even
complex machining tasks in any
number of angle combinations,
says the company. The machine
features a compact layout, a
