18, 2016) – College student
Dallas Leong from Las Vegas,
Nev., won five of his final six
matches Sunday to win the
Professional Bowlers Association Houston Copperfield Bowl
Southwest Challenge, presented
by Global 900.
Leong, a student at UNLV
and a non-member of the PBA,
was visiting friends on spring
break in Houston, and decided
to enter his first PBA event.
He threw three strikes in the
ninth and 10th frames of the
final game position round to
overtake runner up Jonathan
Pokorny of Converse, Texas,
for the victory. PBA Challenge
events are open only to nonmembers who have not won a
PBA event and PBA members
not credited with a PBA title.
Because he is a non-member,
Leong collected the $2,500 first

Brainiacs (A.C. Adam, Mark
Estes, Charlie Mills, Xeno Garcia) qualified 5th and defeated
the Slingshots (Roger West,
Doug Hayes, Pete Thomas, Ted
Pritts) in the first match of the
Baker matchplay at Cowtown,
March 27, 190-187.
They then faced the 3rd
place qualifiers, The Strike
Kings (Gary Dickinson, Paul
McCordic, Raif Terry, Mike
Donahue) and were defeated
247-239.
Next up were the Maxxed
Out (Dave Dupont, Ron Boroff,
Mark Busscher, Eric Traylor).
In what was a great and
very close match, the Maxxed
Out prevailed 233-225, setting
up the final match with the
qualifying leaders, Alpha Max
(Bob McGregor, Jim Stephens,
Billy Oatman, Chris Johnson).
The Alpha Max dominated
the match winning 246-186.
It was the 41st title for
McGregor, the 26th for Stephens and the 2nd for Oatman.

Virginia Autry
Virginia Ann (Spence)
Autry, age 78, of Hawkins, TX,
passed away March 31, 2016 at
The Heart Hospital of BaylorPlano in Plano, TX.
Virginia was born May 29,
1937 in, Bradley, AR to Roy, Sr.
and Bertha Mae (Cox) Spence.
She was an All-State basketball
player in high school.
She, along with her husband, owned and operated
College Bowl in Texarkana
for 31 years and was recently
inducted into the PBA SW
Region Hall of Fame.
They retired from Texarkana and moved to Lake Hawkins
in 2004.
Virginia enjoyed traveling,
reading, bowling, basketball,
anything A & M, and most of
all her grandchildren.
While raising her children
in Texarkana, she always provided a home that all the kids
went to, often fed the neighborhood, kept all the kids safe,
and most importantly provided
love to all of her “sons”.
Virginia was preceded in
death by her parents; a brother,
Clyde Spence; and a sister Billy
Jean Hill.
She is survived by her
Husband, Ed Autry; sons,
Edward “Tra” Autry, Jr. and
wife Julie, of , Hallsville, TX,
and Sam Autry, and wife Charity, of Houston, TX ; brothers,
Roy Spence and wife Clarice,
of Springhill, LA and Jesse
Spence and wife Pat, of Springhill, LA; sister, Pat Norris and
husband Jim of Cleveland , GA;
grandchildren, Dalton, Alyssa,

The USBC Open Championships are off and running and
there is a Texas team standing
on top of the leaderboard.
“Who’s Eddie Byrd?” shot
3241 to take over the Team
Event lead last week and the
National Bowling Stadium in
Reno, NV.
The team is made up of
Stefanie Johnson (600), Lynda
Barnes (604), Jim Stephens
(617), Brett Sterley (671), and
Eddie Byrd (749). Byrd shot
288 the last game to push the
team into the lead by 39 pins
over previous leaders, Wickliffe
Lanes of Mentor Ohio.
Johnson, Barnes, and
Byrd have bowled together
in previous years, but added
Sterley and Stephens this year,
and it proved to be a winning,
or at least leading recipe. But
you rarely bowl well at the
USBC Open if you don’t have a
full pair of good bowlers, and
Byrd’s pair had more than their
fair share.
Their companion team
consisted of Chris Johnson,
Paul Fleming, Lonnie Waliczek, Justin Hromek and Rick
Steelsmith. Not too shabby
huh? Each member of that
team either has a national PBA
title or a PBA Rookie of the
Year trophy sitting on their
mantle at home.
“It was amazing to be
on that pair with that much
talent. It was a classy and
relaxed group. We laughed
about our team versus theirs,
but ultimately Eddie was the
difference,” said Stephens.
The scores are starting off
pretty low this year after only a
month of competition, but that
is sure to change as more and
more bowlers hit the lanes. The
score that the new leaders shot
would have netted them 5th in
last years’ event, so either way
they are destined to finish well
up the board.
“I felt my 617 was a really
good score considering the
conditions. Stef had the best
look when we started but all
the guys broke them down and
moved way left. A team that
all hooks it should do well this
year. A mix of straight and
hook players may struggle,”
added Stephens.
Stephens was a late add to
the team but certainly held
up his end of the bargain, and
you can’t win the tournament
until you lead the tournament,
and that’s exactly how “Who’s
Eddie Byrd” left Reno.
For Stephens, well, “it was
euphoric,” just like it should be
to lead a USBC Open event.

throw a ball…baseball…but
more importantly, the world’s

Rangers.
It’s baseball time in Texas
folks…finally!
Nothing gives me greater
joy than knowing that I have
something to do each evening;
watch the Rangers play. I was
thinking on the way home
today…I don’t know how I
make it through the winter
months without baseball.
Football is only played two
days a week, mostly, basketball
is every night but my team
only plays every three days…
but baseball delivers almost
every single day 5.5 months.
I’m very excited for the
Rangers this year; the rotation
looks solid, I expect the bats
to be better than last year, and
the bullpen should start as
strong as they finished. This is
a recipe for success.
There are several strong
American league teams, so it
will be a fun and fascinating
season.
But hey, don’t worry
about what I say, lets here

and the World Series over the
Chicago Cubs, you gotta love

– the available options seem
to grow every day. The fact
there are so many ways to be
able to access a TV program
speaks to the power of that
glorious screen found in living
rooms and bedrooms across the

That is why the fact that
CBS Sports Network will
broadcast 23 bowling events in
2016 is such tremendous news
for the industry. It’s a shot in
the arm for the burgeoning
Professional Women’s Bowling
Association and an investment
for everyone involved in bowling as we continue to build a
future for the sport.
The televised events include
live finals of the U.S. Open,
USBC Queens, PWBA Players
Championship, U.S. Women’s
Open and Smithfield PWBA

national television every week
from May to September.

collaboratively funded by USBC
and the Bowling Proprietors’
Association of America (BPAA).
Besides the Intercollegiate
Championships, youth bowling
will see more coverage as the
growing Junior Gold Championships presented by Storm,
Roto Grip and Master will be
televised for the second consecutive year. And then there
is the inaugural USA Bowling
National Championships.
Regional tournaments were
held throughout the country
to determine the U12 and
U15 youth teams that would
compete for the first USA Bowl-
ing National Championships
titles. The event showcases the
team concept for youth bowlers, much like Little League
Baseball, and everyone has
seen TV’s impact on that sport.
With Junior Gold and collegiate participation at all-time
highs, more kids than ever are
bowling, and these programs
are helping student-athletes
fund their educations with
bowling scholarships. Putting
the youth programs in the TV
spotlight only can help educate
more people about the opportunities in youth bowling.
The TV package also will
help put the sport top of mind,
which could attract new bowlers. People scrolling through
TV listings will notice bowling
is on TV … and maybe will
tune in.
Such is the power of
television, and, in 2016, it’s
bowling’s turn to step into the
spotlight.

two days of best-of-three-game,
single-elimination match play
Tuesday and Wednesday.

Maine Shootout, presented by
Xtra Frame, is the first of 10
PBA Tour Xtra Frame events
scheduled for 2016, and it’s
the second PBA Tour event
held in Maine. The match
play eliminations begin with

competitors plus a group of
Maine area amateurs and three
women, with winners advancing to the Round of 32 later
Tuesday. Those winners will
battle Wednesday in elimination rounds to determine the

California Bowler New Jersey Bowler Earns Chuck
Hall Star of Tomorrow Award
Oldest to Roll
Certified 800 Series
ARLINGTON, Texas - Even
at 85 years old, William Lautenschlager of Stockton, California,
still is working on his bowling
game, and changes made earlier
this year helped land him in the
United States Bowling Congress
record books as the oldest
bowler to roll a USBC-certified
800 series.
Lautenschlager put together
games of 226, 279 and 300 for
an 805 set Jan. 14 at Stockton's
West Lane Bowl, and he
claimed the record at 85 years
and 9 days old.
Chuck Foudray of Green
Bay, Wisconsin, set the bar in
December 2015, when he rolled
an 810 series at 84 years, 3
months and 28 days old.
This was the third 800 series
of Lautenschlager's career, and
first since 1996, and he didn't
even realize he'd done it.
"I don't like to look at the
numbers or what I have after
two games, and I never have,
because I think it adds unneeded pressure," said Lautenschlager, who bowls in three
leagues and still averages in the
220s. "I didn't even know I shot
800. I thought everyone was
congratulating me for the 300.
I really felt like my 800 days
were over, and I feel extremely
fortunate to have been able to
do this."
The performance came in
the Thursday Senior A league,
one of three leagues Lautenschlager participates in and
serves as president. He also is a
part-time car hobbyist, and the
combination keeps him active
and feeling young.
However, it was minor
arthritis that prompted him to
shorten his span, change his
thumb pitch and try some new
grips, which has him bowling
as comfortably as ever, and has
allowed him to continue doing
something he's done since the
1940s. It's also a passion he
shares with his wife, Kathleen.
Lautenschlager, a Stockton
USBC Hall of Famer, got his
start in bowling as a pin boy in
Nebraska during World War II,
and he picked it back up after
his own service in Korea as a
U.S. Marine.
"After I got back from Korea,
I bowled as a social thing,
but I didn't do much until I
started bowling in Stockton in
the 1980s and started taking
it seriously," Lautenschlager
said. "I've been fortunate to
meet some great people through
bowling. It's also rewarding
and competitive and keeps your
juices flowing."

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jack
Cook of Denville, New Jersey,
a senior at Morris Knolls High
School, has been selected as
the 2016 Chuck Hall Star of
Tomorrow Award winner.
The annual award recognizes star qualities, including
distinguished bowling performance, academic achievement
and civic involvement, in a
male United States Bowling
Congress Youth member who
competes in bowling and
currently is in high school or
college. The recipient of the
award, named in honor of the
former Young American Bowling Alliance Executive Director,
is determined by the International Bowling Campus Youth
Committee and the winner
receives a $6,000 scholarship.
“Receiving this award is
simply validation that my hard
work inside and outside the
bowling alley was, and is, well
worth the effort,” Cook said.
“It makes me proud knowing
that I have been chosen for
such a prestigious award out
of all those who applied. It
demonstrates to me that my
bowling skills are high enough
to compete in collegiate bowling competitions and pursue a
professional bowling career in
the future, if I desire to do so.”
Cook is a member of the
National Honor Society, Science
Honor Society, Mathematics
Honor Society and World
Language Honor Society. He
has taken several Advanced
Placement courses, earning
the AP Scholar with Distinction Award in 2015. He took
part in the Harvard University
Summer School, taking classes
in Multivariable Calculus and
Linear Algebra.
His volunteer work includes
teaching seniors at the Franciscan Oaks Senior Living
Community how to use computers and electronic devices,
teaching English to Spanishspeaking adults, and working
with the Hope House Catholic
Charities Agency. He has been
a cellist for the Lakeland Youth
Symphony since 2010, earning
first chair in 2015.
Cook said a bowling birthday party he attended when
he was 8 spurred his interest
in the sport. Shortly after, his
grandmother gave him a gift
certificate for a bowling lesson
and the pro who taught him
suggested Cook join a league.
“We came in first place that
year and every other year that
we bowled in the father/son
league,” Cook said. “I continued to bowl, and even now,
the more I bowl, the more I
love the sport. It is my passion.
Whether I am practicing or
competing, I have a lot of fun
and am happiest when I am in
or close to a bowling alley.”
On the lanes, Cook won the
doubles title at the Bowling.
com Youth Open Championships in 2014, has 11 career
scratch titles on the Junior
Bowler’s Tour New Jersey
Conference, and finished 15th
in a Professional Bowlers

Ambassador Honor
ARLINGTON, Texas – Jenna
Rose Harrington of Barneveld,
New York, and Daniel Bolan
of Orlando, Florida, have been
selected as the 2016 United
States Bowling Congress Youth
Ambassadors of the Year.
The International Bowling
Campus Youth Committee
annually honors one male and
one female USBC Youth bowler
for their contributions to the
sport, academic achievement
and community involvement.
Harrington and Bolan each will
receive a $1,500 scholarship
and may be selected to serve
on the IBC Youth Committee.
Harrington is a member of
the National Honor Society,
Student Council and Chorus/
Select Chorus at Holland Patent
Central School, where she is
in her senior year. She has accepted a scholarship to attend
Franklin Pierce University in
the fall, where she will major
in psychology.
“To be selected as the female Ambassador of the Year is
an incredible honor and privilege,” Harrington said. “Since
I was 4 years old, bowling has
been my world. I always take
the opportunity to volunteer,
coach, mentor and encourage
everyone to bowl. The sport of
bowling has helped me become
a more confident, knowledgeable and successful young
woman. Through example and
leadership, I will continue to
grow and strive to become a
positive role model of a female
bowler.”
Harrington is a Girls Scouts
of America Bronze Award
recipient, has served as a
volunteer with Habitat for
Humanity and volunteered at
a nursing home. She served
on the Mohawk Valley USBC
Youth Association for two years
as a youth representative.
She has been a member
of her high school bowling
team each year and has been a
first-team all-star three times,
including 2016 when she won
the Section III girls bowling
shootout. She won team,
doubles and singles titles at
the 2014 MVUSBC City Youth
Tournament and again won
team, placed second in doubles
and third in singles in 2015.
She placed 36th at the 2014
Junior Gold Championships.
Bolan is a junior at Bishop
Moore Catholic High School in
Orlando. He started the Strike
for Vets Charity Bowling Tournament in 2015 to raise funds
for the Stay in Step Spinal Cord
Injury Recovery Center that
helps injured veterans and
others with spinal injuries. The
event not only raised money,
but generated awareness and
introduced wounded veterans
to the sport of bowling.
He received the Orange
County Distinguished Citizen
of the Year Award for building
Mercy Garden, a memorial
garden for those who have died
in senseless acts of violence. It
was Bolan’s Eagle Scout Project
and took just over a year to
plan and build, including
raising more than $50,000 and
recruiting 76 volunteers, who
contributed 587 hours to the
project.
“It gives me great joy to
know my support and service
to the bowling community
have been recognized,” Bolan
said. “I am more than surprised to be accepting this
award, as well as very humbled
and grateful.”
Bolan, who also volunteers
as a coach with Seminole
Special Olympics, is an accomplished bowler. He was 58th in
the U15 Division at the Junior
Gold Championships in 2014,
won the Great Orlando Division
I City Championship in 2015
and was selected to the 20142015 USBC Orlando Regional
Boys Youth All-City Team.
Harrington and Bolan will
be presented their USBC Youth
Ambassador of the Year awards
during the USBC Convention,
set for April 26-29 in Las
Vegas.

PBA Billy Welu Scholarship
Applications Now Being Accepted
CHICAGO -- The PBA has
announced it is now accepting
applications for the 2016 PBA
Billy Welu Scholarship Award
which recognizes exemplary
qualities in male or female
college students who compete
in the sport of bowling.
The winner will receive
a $1,000 scholarship. To be
eligible candidates must be
amateur bowlers who are currently in college (preceding the
application date) and maintaining at least a 2.5/4.0 GPA or
equivalent. Applications must
be postmarked by June 15.
The scholarship was established to annually recognize a
college student who combines
outstanding bowling talents
with academic excellence.
Welu, who passed away in
1974, was best known for
his expert analysis alongside
legendary ABC broadcaster
and PBA Hall of Famer Chris
Schenkel on the “Pro Bowlers Tour” series. Welu was a
two-time PBA Tour champion
and a member of the PBA Hall
of Fame’s inaugural induction
class in 1975.

Massachusetts Bowler Celebrates
Five Decades at USBC Open
RENO, Nev. - What initially was a quest to earn a
coveted eagle at the United
States Bowling Congress Open
Championships turned into a
lifelong journey for Ed Gagnon
of Swansea, Massachusetts,
who celebrated 50 years of
tournament participation
Wednesday at the National
Bowling Stadium.
The 68-year-old left-hander
got his USBC Open Championships start like so many others
- he was invited along by a
fellow league bowler. That was
for the 1966 event in Rochester,
New York, and the experience
was memorable enough for him
to plan a return visit the next
year.
Success at the 1967 tourna-
ment in Miami Beach, Florida,
and the opportunity to see his
name atop the leaderboard
before an eventual 21st-place
finish in Regular Singles,
ensured Gagnon's commitment
to the world's largest participatory sporting event.
The last five decades have
been filled with coast-to-coast
travel, competition and camaraderie, all culminating in an
emotional march down Center
Aisle in the most fitting venue the Taj Mahal of Tenpins.
"I've been working toward
getting this in Reno because
there's no place like this in
the world," said Gagnon, who
received a chevron, plaque and
special lapel pin to commemorate his achievement. "I've

death. I'm never at a loss for
words, but I just didn't know

The Open Championships
has given Gagnon a chance to
see places he might not have
visited otherwise, enjoy the
local cuisine in each location
and make friends, both on the
lanes and in the host city.
At the NBS on Wednesday,
86-year-old Wilbert Bellamy
of New Britain, Connecticut,
looked on from the next pair of
lanes, making mental notes of
what to expect when he makes
his own milestone march next
year at the South Point Bowling
Plaza in Las Vegas.
A post-bowling conversation between the two revealed
they've actually met before and
had many friends in common
from their days on the lanes in
the New England area, further
proving how close-knit the
bowling community really is.

I was blown away by all the
comments and congratulations,
even some by hall of famers.
That's been the best part getting to know and bowl with
and against the greats like Dick
Weber and Joe Norris."
As a spry and still-competitive 68-year-old, Gagnon has
considered the idea of chasing
down the tournament's partici-
pation record of 71 years, now
shared by USBC Hall of Famers
Bill Doehrman, Norris and
Sylvester Thiel of Lake City,
Minnesota, who tied the mark
earlier in the 2016 event, but
he'll take it one year at a time
and continue only as long as he
still feels competitive.
This year on the championship lanes, Gagnon shot 590 in
singles, 571 in team and 466 in
doubles for a 1,627 all-events
total. In 50 tournament appearances, he has knocked down
81,345 pins for a 189.6 career
average.

selected by the International
Bowling Campus Youth Committee to receive Gift For Life
Scholarships in 2016. All 12
of this year's recipients are
seniors in high school.
The Gift For Life Scholarships annually are awarded to
12 United States Bowling Congress Youth members who are
in need of financial assistance
to obtain a college education.
Applicants must be current
USBC Youth members in high
school and have a grade-point
average of 2.5 or higher (based
on a 4.0 scale).
To be considered for a Gift
For Life scholarship, applicants
were required to supply two
letters of recommendation,
submit an essay and discuss
their community service efforts
as part of the application
process.

announced today the hiring of Alex Hoskins, as
Technical Customer Service
Representative.
Hoskins is passionate about
bowling and has been part
of the bowling industry his
entire life. He constantly works
to learn as much as he can
about the sport. Hoskins has
competed on the lanes since he
was a youth bowler and began
working in a bowling center in
2008. In 2012 he opened his
own pro shop so that he could
share his knowledge of bowling with others and help them
improve their games. He was
responsible for all administrative aspects of the shop including marketing, placing orders,
invoicing, and other accounting

RENO, Nev. - The members
of Junior Team USA Support 1
of Eagan, Minnesota, entered
the 2016 United States Bowling
Congress Open Championships as defending champions,
something they've experienced
each year since 2014, and some
logical questions surrounded
their appearance at the National Bowling Stadium this
weekend.
Could they become the first
team since powerhouse Lodge
Lanes in 1998 to successfully
defend a Team All-Events title?
If they were able to claim a
third win in four years, should
the word dynasty enter the
conversation? Could team
member Anthony LaCaze, the
2014 Regular All-Events champion, become the first bowler
in USBC Open Championships
history to win a title in four
consecutive tournaments?
Two days and nine games
later, Junior Team USA Support
1 is back on top of the Team
All-Events standings with a
9,672 total, well short of the
team's 10,131 average the last
three years, but a performance
team captain Erik Vermilyea is
especially proud of.
"With as hard as they
were in team, and how things
started today, I'm really happy
with how we grinded and
how things turned out," said
Vermilyea, who made his 12th
Open Championships appearance and was able to maintain
his 222 tournament average.
"When it's going well, it's easy
to put something together.
This year, we really worked
at it, and I'm proud of how we
fought through it and still put
up a decent number."
The team grinded through
doubles with a 202.6 average
and then performed under
pressure, averaging more than
231 in singles to move past
previous Team All-Events
leader, Wickliffe Lanes of
Mentor, Ohio, which topped the
standings with 9,598.
Junior Team USA Support
1's latest effort at the NBS also
has brought up a new question
- is it enough?
"It's always special taking
the lead because of the history
and prestige here, whether you
bowl the first weekend or late
in the event, and we're excited
to be in that position again,"
Vermilyea said. "I'd love to tell
you it's enough, but I honestly
don't think it is. There's too
many good teams coming,
and even more talented teams
being put together. The bar
will continue to get higher, and
it will get harder and harder to
win each year."
Steve Novak led the way for
Junior Team USA Support 1
this year with a 2,019 allevents total and was followed
by Vermilyea (1,988), Matthew
Tuckfield (1,961), LaCaze
(1,942) and left-hander Jeffrey
Mersch (1,762).
The group, which finished
second in the team event
last year, also made a run at
the lead in Regular Team on
Saturday, before unfortunate
final-game carry left them in
third place with a 3,167 total
on games of 1,069, 1,087 and
1,011. Who's Eddie Byrd? of
Fort Worth, Texas, leads with
3,241.
Now, the waiting game begins for Vermilyea and company, who first found themselves
in this position in 2010, when
Vermilyea and Mersch left with
the lead in Regular Doubles.
Their 1,500 total would've won
in most years, but they ended
up 14 pins short when the
tournament concluded in July.
That experience taught them
a lot about the event and the
process and has made them
mentally stronger overall. It
also made the leaderboard
watch in 2013, 2014 and 2015 a
little less stressful because they
realized worrying and obsessing wasn't going to change
the outcome. They put up the
best numbers they could, and
they'd enjoy the experience and
emotions, whether it lasted a
day, or until the last ball was
thrown.
Regardless of how things
turn out in 2016, the old Chicago Cubs mantra rings true
for Junior Team USA Support
1 - there's always next year.
"Going back to 2010 when
we took the lead, so many
things had to go right for us
to be in a position to win even
once, and not winning was
heartbreaking because we
thought that could be our one
real chance," Vermilyea said.
"We've been fortunate to be
able to put together a group
that not only includes talented
players, but great friends who
really gel and work well
together. We definitely feel like
we can contend every year, and
even if we don't win this one,
it makes us look forward to
next year that much more."
Vermilyea did say the
moment in time everything
clicked for the team was their

Zikes of Palatine, Illinois, is

ARLINGTON, Texas - Every
sport has its ups and downs.
This year’s NCAA Men’s
Basketball Tournament once
again has shown us that.
But the only thing athletes
want is a level playing field.
Sure, one team or one person
might “look better on paper”
but we know games are contested on perfect fields where
ability, and perhaps a little
luck, determine the best.
In bowling, our playing
field is the lanes. Each year the
USBC Equipment and Specifications Team works with associations throughout the country to
make sure the playing field is
the same for all bowlers as we
continue to build a future for
the sport.
Making sure lanes are set to
specifications should be simple,
right? Well, it would be easy if
all lanes were constructed the
exact same way with identical
materials. But some bowling
lanes are made of wood and
others are made of synthetic
materials. Those wood lanes,
for example, need protection
– we’re not even talking lane
oil yet – and there are several
substances that can be applied
to keep the wood from being
damaged by heavy balls being
rolled or thrown on them.
Besides the lane itself, you
also would need to check the
gutters, the pin deck (where
the pins are set), the kickbacks
(the sides of the lane at the pin
deck), and many other things
to make sure a bowling ball
rolls the way it is supposed to
roll and the pins react the way
they are supposed to react.
So how is it possible to
check every lane in every center? Well, that’s where the local
associations step up to help.
Each year, USBC local associations visit the bowling centers
in their area and use a variety
of tools to perform a physical

year, the inspection process
usually starts in April with
inspectors contacting centers.
Associations can inspect the
center and give the center
operator time to make needed
corrections, then re-inspect and
certify the center before the
center’s certification expires.
Associations do try to handle
their inspection before the
middle of June so it can submit
the paperwork needed to have
a center approved for certified
competition.
While the center inspection is detailed, late last year
USBC and Lane Analytics took
the inspection process a little

FAMER CHUCK CLEMENS
PBA Hall of Famer and
long-time PBA executive Chuck
Clemens died on Monday,
March 28 of complications
from diabetes. He was 80.
Clemens was inducted
into the Meritorious Service
Category in 1994 in recognition of his contributions to the
organization as its financial
director, a position he held
until his retirement in 1996.
He designed various programs
involving health, insurance and
investing for the organization.
Clemens was also responsible
for all financial aspects for the
nearly 200 PBA Tour, Regional
Tour and Senior Tour tournaments conducted every year.
He is survived by his wife,
Carol Jean (Margo); children,
Chris (Dan) Krinsky, Bob
Clemens and Cheryl (Tim)
Goergen; grandchildren Robyn

First-timer leads two
events at 2016 USBC Open
Championships
David Hjelm of Wheaton,
Minnesota, had a memorable
debut at the United States
Bowling Congress Open
Championships, and he left the
Reno, Nevada, as the leader in
Classified Doubles and Classified All-Events.
The 42-year-old right-hander
rolled sets of 587 in singles,
586 in doubles and 540 in team
to finish his first USBC Open
Championships with a 1,713
all-events total. David Kettell of
Lindenhurst, New York, previously held the lead with 1,661.
"It really hasn't sunk in yet,"
said Hjelm, who bowls regularly at Shoreline Restaurant
Bar and Bowl in Battle Lake,
Minnesota. "I know there's a
lot of time left in the tournament, but it's great. I just bowl
to have fun. That's what this
sport is for me, but this was a
great experience."
In addition to his individual
success, Hjelm teamed with
Gary Sundby Jr. of Dalton,
Minnesota, to take over the top
spot in Classified Doubles with
a 1,155 total March 24. Sundby
contributed a 569 series to help
them past Randy Robinson
and Crystal Forkner, both of
Higginsville, Missouri, who
previously held the lead with
1,118.
Hjelm's singles effort also
got him into the top 10, and
he's now tied for seventh place
in Classified Singles. Kettell
leads with 644.
The Classified Division is for
doubles teams with combined
entering averages of 360 or less
and individual bowlers with
averages of 180 and below.

Pass, Oregon, and Bryon Smith
of Roseburg, Oregon, both
have had success in Reno,
and that continued as they
helped their team into second
place at the 2016 USBC Open

Warren, who won the 1990

28 at the National Bowling Stadium to lead Eagle Taxidermy
of Vancouver, Washington, to
games of 1,105, 1,023 and 1,027
for a 3,155 total.
Lucas Stone added a 636
set and was followed by Rob
Edwards (626), Donnie Allen
III (614) and Bryon Smith, the
2003 USBC Masters winner and
a 2007 Regular Team champion, both at the NBS (580).

USBC Convention is a
Time to Share, Celebrate
ARLINGTON, Texas - In just
over one month, nearly 1,000
USBC association representatives and athletes will come
together for a week of recognition, education and governance
at the USBC Convention.
The American Bowling
Congress held the first annual meeting for the sport
of bowling back in 1895. At
that meeting, the regulations
and specifications for tenpin
bowling was determined. The
Women’s International Bowling
Congress was formed 100 years
ago as the governing body
for women’s bowling. Youth
bowling was organized under
a few different entities with
the Young American Bowling
Alliance becoming the national
organization for youth bowlers
in 1982.
The ABC, WIBC, and YABA
united in 2005 as the United
States Bowling Congress to
serve all bowlers. To this day,
those rules and governance
have led to the sport’s consistency and fair play that embody
what the organization was
founded on, ensuring A Future
for the Sport.
The legislative session is a
big part of the USBC Convention. Usually held the last two
days of the convention, the
legislative session is when
delegates vote on proposals
involving changes to USBC
bylaws, league rules and
tournament rules and also vote
on open positions to the USBC
Board of Directors.
But the convention also is
a time for delegates to come
together to learn from one
another about ways to better
serve the sport in their communities. From Alaska to Florida,
representatives from local and
state associations take part in
workshops to learn best practices for their local association.
In 2016, seminars will include
discussions on the evolution
of associations, recruitment,
networking sessions for state
associations and association
managers, plus much more.
Nearly every delegate who
is part of a local association is
a volunteer, and the passion
these association representatives have for the sport is
unmatched. They are the ones
who volunteer their time to run
local and state championship
tournaments, host their local
association’s Hall of Fame inductions and inspect the lanes
in their association’s centers to
ensure everyone is playing on
the same field.
Recognition of bowling’s finest also takes place at the USBC
Convention. The USBC Hall
Allen and Stone returned to
the lanes March 29 and moved
into fourth place in Regular
Doubles with a 1,320 total,
while Allen landed in sixth
place in Regular All-Events
with 2,003. The group also
moved into fifth place in Team
All-Events with a 9,254 total.
A look ahead
Three bowlers will reach
milestones at the USBC Open
Championships this week,
while the National Bowling
Stadium welcomes the first
defending Regular Division
champions of the year.
Ed Gagnon of Swansea,
Massachusetts, will become the
third bowler of the 2016 event
to celebrate 50 years of tournament participation when he
marches down Center Aisle on
March 30 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Jody Bass of Beavercreek,
Ohio, will join Gagnon in the
50-Year Club on March 31, and
James Grzesiak of Saginaw,
Michigan, will add his name to
the list April 5.

the Year and the USBC Youth
Ambassadors of the Year. It
also is a time to recognize
outstanding bowling leaders
with three special national
awards – Helen Baker Award
for Outstanding Association
Service, Joyce Deitch Unity
Award and Proprietor of the
Year.
USBC charitable contributions, possible because of the
tremendous support from
associations throughout the
year, also is celebrated during
Convention with presentations for Bowlers to Veterans
Link and Bowl for the Cure,
a partnership with Susan G.
Komen.

I don’t need a coach or
lessons
The persistent outlook
seems to be that buying another ball will “fix” it. I don’t
know of a great player in any
sport who didn’t have a coach
who guided them to where they
are or who doesn’t currently
have a coach to help them stay
there.
It is a pervasive attitude,
particularly in our sport, that
a coach is not necessary. Every
bowling coach out there has

had this conversation: “What
do you do?” “I’m a bowling coach.” The non-verbal
response is either a smirk,
laughter (thinking you're kidding), or shock. The translation
is that they didn’t think anyone
needed a coach to bowl. After
all, you just stand here and
throw there. How hard can it
be?
If perfection is a strike and
a three year old can do it now
and again, this can’t be too
hard. I haven’t heard of a three
year old getting a hole-in-one,
thus a bit of a credibility gap.
Most people wouldn’t think of
going to Pebble Beach to play
golf right after they went to
one of the “-Marts” to buy their
clubs. They go to the driving
range to practice and get some
coaching, even with “-Mart”
equipment. That coaching
comes from someone they have
never heard of, by the way.
They don’t ask his handicap or
how many holes-in-one he has
as a standard for judging his
worthiness as an instructor.
It is so much more fun to do
it on purpose. Having a coach

are leaving 10 pins or splits
and what should they do? I ask
what kind of 10 pins or what
kind of splits. They get really
vague and tell me, “Oh, all
kinds.” The fix for weak 10s is
different than the fix for ringing 10s, just like high hit splits
require a different adjustment
than light hit splits. You’ve got
to know which you’re leaving
to know how not to do that
anymore!

“comprehensive evaluation”
part of the process. How comprehensive? Well, each board
of each lane was inspected and
leveled every 42 inches in 18
locations per lane. This basically reduced the severity every
dip and every hump on every
lane.
If you want to get down to
the nitty-gritty technical part
of this, each lane was within
twenty-thousandths of an inch
of flat. That’s 0.020 when the
standard is +/-0.040.

inspected each year and why
did USBC team with Lane

The word 'angle' wasn't
heard much in bowling
parlance after the AMF Angle
series ushered in the urethane
ball era thirty-five years ago.
It wasn't until Brunswick tour
ball rep Rick Benoit began
describing either opening up
or closing ball entry angles on
the back end of the lane in the
late 90's and early 2000's. He
would then offer advice telling
Brunswick staffers (like me at
the time) to choose the right
ball, not to give up that angle
affording the most potential for
strikes.
Little different than hearing
which ball to use and when?
Oh, yeah. He further explained
certain players naturally create
certain angles, so they had a
few more options in the ball
line. Terminology like this is
almost commonplace now, but
very unique back then.
Over the years whenever
I've asked Rick Benoit a question, it is rarely a short answer.
Whether it be as an unknown
staffer or as a reporter, it is not
a boring answer, either. If you
remember the column on the
25th anniversary of his brother
Bob's TV 300 game, Publisher
Tony and I were dumbfounded
as to what could be edited out
for space, every paragraph as
compelling as the one before.
A couple of questions turned
into segments of the next three
columns.
The other part of this
response, you'll read next
week. But for now, Benoit, currently the Saudi Arabian head
national coach, responds to the
March 31 column questions:
JPA: Brian Voss would
rather see the game head back
to rolling a ball with the thumb
inserted and using just the
arm attached to that thumb.
You mentioned if technology is
going to evolve, the game has
to evolve with it. How does the
game do that?
Rick Benoit: There are
3 constants of our sport.
They are pin configuration,
dimensions of the lane, and
the presence of transition (oil
movement).
Every decision made with
our rules and regulations
should take this into consideration. Everything that has
been going on in our industry
has broken the limitations of
these constants. Either the
constants need to change or the
limitations need to be governed
because the only alternatives
are destructive. I personally want to maintain present
constants for recreational
bowling and alter the constants
for sport bowling so there is an
obvious difference and greater
challenge for sport bowling.
JPA: Another area was about
sponsorship. You mentioned
attitudes and definitions inside
the United States with the need
to change the structure and
definitions of the game. What
has happened to drive sponsors
away? How would the structure
and definitions of the game get
changed to create more sponsorship opportunity?
Benoit: No wise investor is
going to attach their name and
money to the whining attitudes
and constant complaining that
is obvious in the United States.
It takes about 15 minutes on
the Internet or in a bowling
center to recognize investing
money to a non-loyal crowd
with negative attitudes is a bad
investment no matter how good

You asked about structure
and definition and that is
the fundamental flaw if our
industry. We do not have a
structure from recreation to
professional sport. We don't
have an accepted definition for
what bowling is, let alone any
other definition. This confuses
how to grow and develop as an
athlete or industry. Sponsorship starts with gaining media
attention and contagiously
exciting environments. It is less
about the actual competition
and more about the environment at a competition event.
Bowling is popular at every
level of social classification but
it is unrealistic to think that
social classes want to interact
with one another. To attract
sponsorship we must be more
active at all social classifications. A country club environment is more appealing to a
potential sponsor than what we
have available. We need lesser
expensive bowling opportunities. We need better attention
at age classifications and what
they consider fun. We need to
separate recreational minds
and competitive minds. We
need to build more high class
low volume environments.
We need to attach bowling
with other sport participation
activities so it isn't a standalone. We need to create an
athletic version of bowling that
changes the perspective and
reputation we have as athletes
and sport.
What has happened is we
never evolved from a recreation
and leisure competition. We
never evolved to attract the

environment to join. The
participants want to think
the viewer gets excited about
a ball rolling down the lane
and the pins falling. It is more
important to create a party like
atmosphere with participation activities like tailgating,
dances, dinners, drama,
team events, cheerleaders,
Jumbotrons, and impressive
athletic skills. All we invite
are critics and silly arguments
that a leisure bowler should be
considered an athlete. Basically
there has been no creativity or
adaptation just clinging on to
what was and that is not going
to satisfy sponsors or fans in a
constantly evolving society.

* Long-time Rio Rancho
bowler, Bo Bolon set a new
three-game house record during Monday's "Family Affair"
youth/adult doubles league at
Tenpins & More.
Bolon started the series with
287 that included ten strikes
in a row before leaving an
unfortunate 7-10 pocket split in
his eleventh shot.
He followed this with eleven
strikes in a 278 before finishing with twelve strikes for 300
and 865, beating the previous
record set by Luke Richard in
2001 by eight pins.
Bolon has been undergoing
heavy treatment for throat
cancer, so everyone was happy
for him. From 35 shots, he
bowled 33 strikes.
* Demost Quintana has won
back-to-back Doubles Marathons at Tenpins & More, the
first to do so, this time with Ed
Thorman, as they went 7-1 in
the match-play format. Quintana contributed a 228 average
while Thorman carded 217.
There was a four team tiebreaker needed to decide those
on 6-2. Sara Vargas and Robert
Barteau threw a huge 245/266
set for second ahead of Richard
Marquis and Robert Edwards,
whose 232/227 would have
won almost any other play-off
held in the last seventeen
years. They took third.
Brothers, Angel and Cris
Ortega got fourth followed by
Estela Rico and C J Valencia
in fifth.
Sixth went to Daniel Price
and Jeremiah Martin, then
another play-off for teams on a
5-3 record that resulted in Ron
and Tammy Michel coming
