We all Have a Dark Side
We all Have a Dark Side “Night and Day, TV3’s revelatory series for this season, is very good. It is one of the channel’s best in-house productions, if not the best. Particularly because it aims to offer something that goes beyond what we have seen to date. In terms of script, acting, directing, setting and lighting, Night and Day has shown that the bar can be, and has been, raised for future productions.” Mónica Planas. Diari ARA. 03/03/2016 Night and Day is a realistic thriller centered around medical examiners, police, judges…people whose day to day work brings them in constant contact with the darkest side of reality. Sara Grau (Clara Segura) is a forensic pathologist happily married to a high-level corporate executive. Night and Day starts off the day that, while performing an autopsy on an unidentified body, she thinks she recognizes him as someone with whom she had shared a brief affair in the past. This discovery turns her life upside down, revealing a hidden truth lying beneath a veneer of apparent stability. From that point on, Sara finds herself trying to juggle between determining the cause of death in a string of murders, and maintaining a stable and normal life that includes the decision of whether or not to have a child with her husband. Life and death in constant play. Shot on location in Barcelona, especially in the Ciutat de la Justícia legal complex, Night and Day is also a portrait of this city, with all of its lights and shadows. Very like Sara Grau. “The puzzle that Night and Day lays out, addresses the dark side of the human condition. That is what makes it a grand series, demanding more of the viewers and perfectly capable of meeting their raised expectations.” Joan Burdeus. La Vanguardia.03/02/2016 A REALISTIC SERIES WITH HIGH PRODUCTION VALUES Night and Day is a true-to-life series, not a fictitious work with implausible characters and situations. It is a realistic thriller, aimed to truthfully reflect the work of judges, forensic experts and the police. It skillfully combines two contrasting aspects of the characters-light and dark-with the mystery, intrigue and tension generated by the different murders. Rather than explaining what is involved in the scientific process of a criminal investigation, the plot delves into the personal impact of the characters’ constant contact with the horror involved. What sets Night and Day apart from other thriller series is the fact that more focus is placed on how the characters feel and what is happening to them, than on the crimes they are trying to solve. All of the characters have their light and dark sides: a judge trapped between a stale marriage and ambition; a psychiatrist traumatized by a past event; unscrupulous executives; and hard-core delinquents. And, of course, a psychopath who plays the role of angel during by day, and devil by night. The actors offer first-rate performances and each character brilliantly reveals his/her two sides: one which appears normal and another which hides ambitions, fears, strengths and weaknesses. In short, reflecting the tension between who we are and who we appear to be. The mise-en-scène also establishes a delicate, if often difficult, balance between what is real and what leaves room for emotional expression, both spoken and unspoken. The necessarily thorny scenes also maintain this fine line between credibility and morbid fascination. The powerful image projected is meant to call up feelings within an atmosphere that is at once disturbing and calmly deliberate. This high-quality series is designed to both captivate thriller enthusiasts and attract new fans to this genre. Televisió de Catalunya’s new hit series, following the successful runs of Red Band Society and Merlin. Night and Day is the story of Sara Grau, a medical examiner who tries to balance the harsh realities she faces in her job, with a calm and stable personal life. That is sometimes easier said than done. Her constant contact with the darkest side of society is not innocuous, and leaves its toxic mark on her day-to-day life. Nonetheless, Sara, along with her colleagues at the Institute of Legal Medicine, does her best to cling to lightness, to life, to what we naïvely refer to as a normal existence. The series introduces us to the lives of a group of individuals involved in the investigation of a series of crimes that have been committed in the city. It is a group portrait of their weaknesses, anxieties, and efforts to forge ahead and overcome the contradictions that surface in their lives. The police procedural genre allows us to lead the characters to confront their fears and weaknesses, thus pushing them to the limit and forcing them to make difficult and sometimes questionable decisions. Our view of them aims to be as realistic as their lives, showing exactly who they are, without judgments, accusations or forgiveness; just objectively observing them. Finally, Night and Day is a realistic portrait of the city of Barcelona, a world of contrasts, between life and death, and between lightness and darkness. Lluís Arcarazo and Jordi Galceran Recently, TV series have practically picked up the baton of traditional film and become one of the main focuses in entertainment. It was probably the series “Twin Peaks” that first gave this TV format a prestigious name. Since then, hundreds of memorable works have been produced that can be considered a proud match to film, with the advantage of instantaneous and broad outreach through the TV set straight into homes, and skipping the box office. Those of us who love film embrace this new medium which, in effect, is a continuation of the hallowed art of film, as well as a means of survival in these turbulent times within our industry. Despite whatever differences between the two genres, Night and Day is a laudable effort on the part of Televisió de Catalunya to put their support behind this format, with regard to both form and content. Night and Day is a perfect combination of thriller and drama, of plot and character. It is a series of contrasts, of light and shadow, from the perspective of characters who live daily with the darkest sides of human nature. We are fully confident that this series is firmly in the league of other internationally successful European series such as The Fall, Borgen and The Killing. Manuel Huerga and Oriol Paulo SARA GRAU – Clara Segura Medical examiner. Rational, intelligent, with a scientific mind. She wanted to be an actress, but her cocaine addiction led her to prostitution. She’s lost all contact with her family and only has Fajardo, a seasoned delinquent who wants to marry her. CONSOL JANÉ – Carme Sansa Marc Ramos’ mother and Adrià’s grandmother. A very religious and strict woman who has apparently softened and become more tolerant over time. She is surly with her son, though affectionate with her grandson Adrià. She is in utter denial of something she suspects in her own mind: that her son is a murderer. ADRIÀ RAMOS – Ivan Luengo Marc Ramos’ son. He loves and also fears his father. He feels that his father wants him to be braver and more decisive.
