What’s New and Tried & True

W
e’re looking forward to another exciting year with five
new series and nearly 20 new varieties that enhance
the Suntory brands you rely on. These new varieties are
improvements, new colors, superior performers and novelties
that create interest. Each year, Suntory’s breeding teams sort
through thousands of hybrids to select the very best. As new
ones come in, others are phased out to offer manageable
series with the very best performers.
You will notice some changes to the catalog this year:
•S
untory Collection varieties are now organized
alphabetically by genus instead of by brand. We still have a
listing by brand on page 2 for those who find that easier.
•N
ew 10-page section showcases our special brands outside
the Suntory Collection of annuals
starting on page 38. These include
Senetti, Sun Parasol, Sunvillea,
Sunrosa, Crackling Fire and
Princettia. Now you can find the
entire Suntory portfolio of plants in
one place.
• See all the exciting new varieties
in one place on pages 6 and 7.
• Choose plants that perform by
using the recap of last summer’s
trials results on page 33. Which
plants performed the best in your
region? Throughout the catalog, you will see awards for
specific varieties from the past three years. We are keeping
track to give you the most comprehensive view over time.
You asked and we listened. We want to make our catalog as
useful as possible. Feel free to call me or drop me a line to
request additional copies and share any feedback you have.
Innovative & Independent!
Suntory Flowers dares to be different
by embracing a ”blue ocean” strategy.
F
rom the very beginning, Suntory approached the flower
business as a category creator with a ”blue ocean” strategy
– creating new demand in uncontested market space instead
of competing head to head in established markets and
categories. The place where no one is yet is most interesting.
As the world leader in food, beverage and hospitality
industries, Suntory is best known for introducing whiskey
to Japan and has since built a reputation for introducing
the finer things in life and promoting happiness. Suntory’s
breeders have created “top-shelf” varieties by putting
customer satisfaction and enjoyment first.
They approached the flower business with a fresh perspective
without any preconceived ideas or traditions in the horticultural
trade. While most flower breeders had been selecting varieties
that could produce seed, Suntory chose plants for the best
garden performance and impact. All Suntory varieties are
produced vegetatively from cuttings, which was unheard of in
the bedding plant annuals world 25 years ago.
It all began with Surfinia – the first vigorous, vegetative
petunia, which reinvented the category and kicked off the
vegetative annuals revolution. This new hybrid with wild
petunia blood was just perfect for filling out baskets and
tolerating weather extremes.
Next came Million Bells calibrachoa – a completely new genus
with a wide color range and high flower count. Twenty years
later, the gardening public still affectionately refers to all
calibrachoas as Million Bells.
Soon to follow were beautiful vegetative verbenas – Tapien
and Temari – creating a whole new category, and then Summer
Wave torenias.
Suntory keeps creating new categories as others follow. Sun
Parasol revolutionized mandevillas and took that crop from
tropical niche to mainstream. Senetti became a whole new
early spring crop, leaving its distant cineraria relative far
behind. What’s next? Stay tuned!
Beyond a passion for and dedication to truly new breeding,
Suntory is using new approaches to serve the North
American market. Instead of becoming a vertically integrated
giant, Suntory flourishes by partnering with innovative and
independent individuals and businesses. Suntory also leads the
way in developing the most comprehensive digital educational
and promotional resources for the trade and consumers through

Violina's vigor surpasses all
other violas with a success rate
of nearly 100%. An abundance
of uniquely colored blossoms
bloom in fall and early spring.
Outstanding in hanging
baskets and patio pots.
John Says:
The Violina violas
are an ideal item
to push as the first color in the
spring, because they can take
cold temperatures. But unlike the
more typical seed violas, they can
take heat and sun. Up North, we
can keep them out all summer.
