I was surprised when I started to compile this
list by how many people are working with glass
in Scotland today. Although the industrial side
continues to decline, the number of glass artists
and craft workers has grown dramatically since
the beginning of the studio glass movement in
the country during the 1960s. The book Scotland’s
Glass: 400 Years of Glassmaking, 1610–2010 by
Shiona Airlie and Brian Blench finally makes a
comprehensive history available (see inside rear
cover for details).

This booklet reveals the wealth of glass made
in Scotland today: stained glass, traditional and
modern; fine art to the highest standards; and
innovative beads, jewellery and engraving, which
ranges from one-off copper-wheel and diamondpoint work to higher-volume production. A few
companies continue to produce technical and
scientific glass, and products for giftware, but
most of the entries are individuals or small teams
making all manner of decorative goods.
Having a window or glass vessel custom-made
is not expensive and you could ask some of the
people listed here if they can create objects based
on your ideas. Some will even teach you how to do
it yourself!
Scotland also boasts many fine galleries where the
work of those listed can be purchased, but these
were not included in this booklet, as there were far
too many.

Today, we often look for information on the
Internet and Scotland’s glass features there too.
I built the site Ysartglass.com some 10 years ago
and it has grown and grown with input from
collectors worldwide. Scotlandsglass.co.uk was
started to provide a space for the rest. Using open
source software, it is intended to be owned and
run by the community. In addition to offering
encyclopaedic coverage of all glass Scottish, it
acts as a community hub for its users. Everyone is
welcome to get involved, just get in touch.
About the Listings
Although I tried to locate and contact everyone
involved in glass, there are omissions; the
on-line version of the listings will be updated
throughout 2010. The Scottish Glass Society and
CraftScotland.org both list their members on
their websites: see the organisations section for
details. Those makers we did not get first-hand
confirmation from are listed to the best of our
ability. These are coloured blue, as they may
contain errors.
There are many more buildings containing
interesting glass than those listed, but I have tried
to find the more usual and important ones, as well
as a selection of those with recent installations.

The museums of Scotland house a vast heritage
of the earliest known Scottish glass. For glass
collectors, Scotland has a lot to offer: from fine
exhibition-quality examples from the 19th century
such as the work of Christopher Dresser to the
20th century Monart and Vasart glass and the
more modern styles of Caithness Glass, Edinburgh

Crystal and others. Glass from earlier times
is much harder to find, yet there must still be
many pieces sitting in cupboards, forgotten and
unidentified. The output of the many bottle works
is also hard to pin down but the whisky bottle
collector has many opportunities from the labels.

A Selection of Buildings where Glass is evident
Scotland has a rich heritage of buildings with stained glass and its many glass practitioners continue to
maintain those existing, as well as introduce modern design. Fused, etched and engraved glass is also
being increasingly used in public buildings and private homes. But glass is also used as a structural
material and here specified by architects more than artists. Traquair House, near Edinburgh also has an

Loch Maree in Wester Ross where glass started
in Scotland shows no trace of the iron and glass
foundries (archaeologists please note!), but it is
still a beautiful spot to visit. There are still some
sand mining operations for glass in Scotland but
the most remarkable is Lochaline (see photo,
right), which is one of the few underground
sand mines in the world that operated from the
1940s to 2008. Not open to the public but has the
potential to be a remarkable tourist attraction
with its vaulted caverns created from extraction
of the fine quality sand. Alloa and Perth offer the
best of preserved glass history in Scotland.

Glass Collection: A small collection of
Scottish vessel glass, mainly domestic
ware. One or two pieces are eighteenth
century and have Jacobite associations.
Beer and wine bottles are included.
There are also some pressed plates. On
permanent display are five Alloa “chip”
engraved brown bottles, marked with
dates ranging from 1845–1874.
The stained glass on permanent display
includes a Walter Scott-themed stair

Glass Collection: Comprehensive
collection of British, and particularly
Scottish, glass dating from the early
18th century to the present day, plus a
fine collection of 19th and early 20th
century stained glass salvaged from
within Glasgow. A rare set of early 18th
century tear drop glasses. They have all
the major names from the 20th century in
the collection, too. A good Venetian and
Spanish glass from 17th century to the
19th century.
Glass Collection: A fine collection of
glass, primarily produced in the city, and
dating from the early 18th century to the
present day. Highlights of the collection
include a glass made for Charles Edward
Stuart, some of the best examples from the
Holyrood Glass factory, and an engraved
wedding service made for the Duke and
Duchess of York (later King George V and
Queen Alexandra)
Throughout 2009 & during the first half
of 2010, visitors can see a temporary
exhibition of highlights from the collection
at nearby Rozelle House Art Gallery and
Museum free of charge. The new museum
will be open in Summer 2010.
Summer 2010 exhibition of some of their
finest Scottish glass. Including one of the
earliest bottles ever made in Glasgow,
fine 18th century goblets, glass from the
art nouveau period and some of the best
glass made in Scotland in recent times.
Normally hidden in storage, this fabulous
collection will be a must-see for any glass
enthusiast.
A series of glass lectures are planned
through the summer months.
By autumn it is hoped that Glasgow's
museum stores will be holding guided
tours of their substantial reserve glass
collection.

Glass Collection: Important collection
of Perth Glass. John Moncrieff, Monart,

display at Perth Museum & Gallery
focuses on the story of Perthshire glass

of glass at the Perth Ink Manufactory to
