PAGE 7 TECHNICAL NOTES The Building Code of Australia requires: • All treads to have a non-slip or adequate non-skid strip near the edge of the nosing. (clause D2.1 3(e). • Step edge visibility for people with disability a strip not less than 50mm and not more than 75mm wide on the tread at the nosing in a contrasting colour in accordance with AS1428.1 requirements • Stair treads should preferably offer an even uniform surface. Any variation at the rear edge of the nosing may become a trip hazard. Basic Maintenance All stair edges and floor trims should be cleaned at least once a week to maintain their appearance and prevent the build-up of dirt or grease which could prove hazardous. Aluminium can be lightly burnished with steel wool (mill finish). Brass should be cleaned regularly with a proprietary metal polish and a duster taking care not to discolour the nosing inserts. Inserts and Stairtile are best cleaned with a mild alkaline detergent. N.B. Do not use solvent cleaners, floor sealants or polishes which will reduce the slip resistance properties.
