Pg Issue #4 2 3 4 6 7 Tri-Valley Local School District April 2015 2 A message from the superintendent . . . The 2014-15 school year is down to the last six weeks and preparations for the 2015-16 school year are well underway. The school district has several staff members who plan to retire and there will be several new faces to start the school year in August. We are currently in the interviewing process for many of these positions. Our Straight “A” Grant partnership and the response to the new dual enrollment course offerings at Tri-Valley High School has been very positive. High school students are scheduling now and there are an even greater number of courses available that will result in college credit for many of our students. This school year was the first under the new hour requirement for Ohio school districts. This year’s calendar worked out very well in terms of the severe weather and not having to schedule make up days. The TV Board of Education has adopted a similar calendar for the 2015-16 school year which is currently located on the district website. I frequently find myself trying to explain decisions made at the state level to Tri-Valley residents. The recent PARCC testing and the number of Tri-Valley parents who opted out their children has received significant media coverage around the state and even in the national media. Ohio House Bill 7 was recently passed, which means there will be no negative consequences to our students and families who made this decision. There will however, still be some consequences for the individual school districts in terms of their state report card rankings. The Tri-Valley school district is much more concerned about the loss of instructional time because of over-testing, then we are the arbitrary rankings found on the Ohio Department of Education District Report Card. Traditionally, Tri-Valley has been one of the highest ranked school districts in the state and we were the only school district in the county to meet all 24 performance indicators last year. It remains to be seen if we will even receive a ranking for the current year based on the number of students who did not participate in state testing. We have several summer projects already underway that include re-seeding the lawn at the main entrance to the high school, warranty work on the roofs at both Adamsville and Frazeysburg Elementary, and renovating in order to create additional classroom space at Nashport Elementary. The entire Tri-Valley community is invited to attend our annual commencement ceremony to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2015. The graduation Ceremonies will be held at Jack Anderson Stadium on Friday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. The spring sports season has arrived! It has been a long, hard winter and it is very encouraging to see the baseball, softball, and track teams outside again. I wish them all a great season! Go Scotties! Mark K. Neal, Superintendent 3 Nashport Elementary’s Outdoor Learning Center Imagine an outdoor learning center where children can put classroom information into real world practices. Science, math, social studies, language arts and music all come to life, engaging all the senses. The Outdoor Learning Center will consist of: A 24 x 40 foot open air structure with lighting and power outlets A 24 foot wall for presentation purposes and a retaining wall for seating & safety Immunization Reminder Attention Parents of Incoming Kindergarten & 7th Grade Students The Ohio Department of Health states that all Kindergarten students have their immunizations up-to-date prior to the first day of school. These include Dtap, Polio, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) and Varicella (Chickenpox). The Ohio Department of Health also requires students entering the 7th grade to receive a Tdap vaccination before entering middle school. Please call your family physician to evaluate if your child has received the required vaccinations. If you do not have a family physician, you can receive vaccinations at the following locations: Muskingum County Health Department Call 740-454-9740 to schedule an appointment (please take your immunization record with you) Theater seating for 100 students The budget needed for the center is $35,000. The Nashport PTO has planned school-wide and community fundraisers and is continuing to research and apply for local and national grant money to support the project. If you would like to show your support, plan to participate in one of these upcoming fundraisers: The Annual Walk-a-Thon which will take place on May 15, 2015. Sponsor a student to complete as many laps as possible. Free Childhood Immunization Clinics Walhonding Valley Fire Department Fridays - May 15 & July 17 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. (take your immunization record with you) Updated immunization records showing that your child received the required vaccines need to be turned into the school your child will attend prior to the first day of school this fall. Students who have not presented proof of vaccination may be excluded from attending school. Nashport Elementary is excited to host Camp Invention this summer! Pathway to Learning - purchase a custom engraved brick and be a permanent part of the Outdoor Learning Center. Your brick will be used in the construction of the project. Camp Invention is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) based summer enrichment camp for children entering grades 1-6. The camp will run June 22 - 26, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. More information is available on the Nashport Elementary Website. Be sure to check out the district website for more information and registration. 4 Adamsville Grade 2 Slade Armstrong Dyllon Ault Audri Cramer Zack Gill Felicity Grable Wyatt Gregg Caiden Hogue Amelia
