Catholic education – Who benefits? It has been 84 years since St. Mary of
the Assumption High School was established. Much has changed in those 84
years, but one thing remains the same – the commitment to deliver a superior
education within the spiritual heritage of the Catholic faith.
Perhaps many of us have taken St. Mary’s and Catholic education for granted.
Maybe this was because we were fortunate to have received a Catholic
education ourselves and expect the same for our children; or maybe because
from the outside looking in, everything seems to be fine. Unfortunately, the
time has passed when any of us can presume that this outstanding institution will be able to continue
this tradition.

The costs for meeting our students’ educational and spiritual needs are rapidly increasing. In recent
years, prudent fiscal policy and improved monitoring have strengthened St. Mary’s financial position.
But much more needs to be done!
The 84 year old building is aging and we need to take care of the aches and pains. You know how
expensive it is to keep up your home, imagine what the cost is to take care of the school. The
infrastructure needs to be improved, and the technology needs to be upgraded.
SAVE THE DATE!
Please think of St. Mary’s – today!

As you search your heart in support of our annual appeal campaign, we hope you will demonstrate your
generosity in your pledge. Without your support this high school, which sets the standard for overall
excellence, will decline in the face of the new demands of the 21st century. The price to pay for this
will be measured in much more than just dollars.

WELCOME DAVID EVANS!
A warm welcome to our new Principal David Evans!
Mr. Evans was chosen among many applicants and
joined our staff this past summer. He has an
extensive background in education at all levels. Mr.
Evans is continuing the fine work started by his
predecessor Janet Malko, as well as implementing
the recommendations suggested by the Transition
Team.
David Evans and Janet Malko
HAPPY RETIREMENT MS. JANET MALKO!
Ms. Malko came to St. Mary’s in
1969 as a teacher of mathematics, and
quickly became an integral part of the
St. Mary’s community. In addition to
teaching math during her following

they could come into her office to
ask questions, chat, or express
concerns. She also set the tone for
respectful, considerate behavior for
everyone in the building. One
student who came to St. Mary’s
after having been bullied in middle
school was afraid that the pattern
would continue in high school. He
related that “The turning point
came on my first day as a student
at St. Mary of the Assumption. . .
To my surprise my first day was
amazing. The Principal was so nice, caring, and
friendly. She reached out to me and assured me that I
did not have to worry.” The student gratefully
completed his years at St. Mary’s without harassment
and always found a welcoming smile when he came in to
see Ms. Malko in her office.
Ms. Malko was a brilliant math Janet Malko
teacher who not only understood calculus but who could
also relate higher level math to everyday situations. She
liked to have fun in the classroom, using innovative ways
to approach problems, and many students have come back
from college testifying that their freshman math was easy
because they used her shortcuts and techniques. Even after
becoming principal, Ms. Malko continued to teach at least
one course each year so she could have first-hand Ms. Malko knew how to stretch the resources in the

BEST WISHES MRS. MARYANN RENZULLI!
After 20+ years at St. Mary's, Mrs. MaryAnn Renzulli,
Chair of the Science Department, has retired. Mrs.
Renzulli wore many hats during her time here. By her
own calculations, she has taught Earth Science, Biology,
and Environmental Science; when called upon, she has
also conducted classes in Money Management, Law,
and seminars in study and organizational skills as well.
However, for the last several years, she concentrated on
Biology for the 9th graders and Environmental Science
for the upperclassmen. Mrs. Renzulli tried to make her
freshman classes see the connection between their lives
and the world around them through varied and fun
activities. Who can forget making models of cells with
jello, or "cell" cakes decorated with all the correctly
labeled parts? Whether it was tracking the growth rate
of mold on bread, or watching potatoes sprout vines, the
students got hands-on experience.
Over the years, Environmental Science classes planted,
weeded, and seeded the grounds of St. Mary's, learning
what best grew in our soil. Students studied volcanoes,
tornadoes, and hurricanes. They studied epidemics and
pandemics. They learned what they, as responsible
citizens, could do to reduce pollution. They examined a
variety of issues and problems from around the globe,
and saw what individuals and governments could do to
ensure clean water and the growth of healthy crops.
Mrs. Renzulli often said that, aside from the
academics, she tried to get students to follow
directions, organize, and focus on tasks, actions that
would serve them well beyond their high school years.
Her influence was evident as many former students
returned from time to time to let her know she had,
indeed, made a difference. And she took great pride
and pleasure in their success.
Mrs. Renzulli enjoyed working with the students
outside the classroom, too. She served for many years
as an advisor to the senior prom and took great care
planning the decor, selecting the menu, and quietly
arranging financial assistance for some who might
otherwise be unable to attend. She spent countless
hours working to provide the graduating class with
many wonderful memories of their big night.
So what does the future hold for her now? As faculty,
staff, and students know, Mrs. Renzulli is an inveterate
traveler. That's what on her agenda these days. She will
be taking short trips, long cruises, and of course, seeing
her ten grandchildren. After her long, dedicated service
to our school, she is taking time to relax and enjoy
retirement. She now has the opportunity to pursue a
variety of interests, and we wish her well. We are
grateful for all she has done to educate, counsel, and
mentor the students of St. Mary's.

LUNCH WITH SCHOLARSHIP DONORS AND
STUDENTS
Last spring, Principal Janet Malko,
along with Mary (’48) and Bill Ard and
Gail (’56) and Frank Mertz, scholarship
donors, were joined by the scholarship
recipients for lunch at St. Mary’s.
Incoming scholarship freshmen from
Our Lady of Guadalupe also enjoyed
lunch and met their very generous
donors. This scholarship program is
based on need, and the students would
not be able to attend St. Mary’s without
this aid. Thank you Mary, Bill, Gail and
Frank for your continued support of our
school and students.
In the fall, another luncheon was held
with Principal David Evans, Assistant
Principal Christine Acevedo and
Guidance Counselor Bridget Jackson,
doers, donors and students. Students
were joined us by a number of alumni
and friends as well as staff. We plan to
make this a semi-annual event with more
of our doers and donors.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
VANNESA MARTINEZ (’99)
Although I attended St. Mary’s for grades 7-12, it’s been a
part of my life basically since I was born… my sister Maria
(Martinez) Styron graduated in 1981 (one month before I
was born!), and some of my earliest memories are of her
St. Mary’s friends hanging out at our house. I got to
reconnect with some of them this summer when they came
into town for their 33-year reunion.
As for my own experience at St. Mary’s, I’ll never forget all
of the great times I had, whether it was planning events
with the Student Council, rehearsing for school plays like
West Side Story and Godspell, and most of all promoting
school spirit as a cheerleader. I cherish the memories I
made with wonderful friends, whether or not we’ve kept in
touch over the years (a big thank you to Facebook on that
front!). There was also studying… A LOT of studying!
But mostly, I am grateful for a place that prepared me for
the next steps in my education and helped me develop the
skills, knowledge and confidence that have continued to
serve me well on every step of my professional path.

After graduating from St. Mary’s as part of the great Class
of 1999, I went on to study at Princeton University. I had
an amazing four years at Princeton, where I majored in
Politics and minored in Political Theory and Latin
American Studies. After graduation, I went on to study law
at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). I graduated in
2006 and worked at major law firms in Los Angeles and
New York before finding my way into higher education
law. I worked for two years at my alma mater, Princeton,
and since 2012 I have been working for Yale University,
where I am currently an Assistant General Counsel.
On the personal side, I was lucky to have been introduced
to a nice young man from California named Mike when he
moved to New York and began medical school with my best
friend from college, and he’s been my partner in crime for
over six years now. We live in New Haven, CT, where he
is completing his residency at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Wherever life takes us next, St. Mary’s will always have a
special place in my heart!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
RUTH SHERIDAN HUNTER (’34)
Ruth Hunter
In 2003, as St. Mary’s was preparing
to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its
first graduating class, school officials
thought they had found the school’s
oldest alumni when they contacted
members of the Class of 1934. They
were wrong —something they learned
when Ruth Sheridan Hunter offered
them a picture of her St. Mary’s
graduating class taken on the steps of
the school in June 1928.
The previous year when Ruth finished her freshman year at
Hamilton Junior High School in Elizabeth, she had been
looking forward to continuing on to high school, where her
diploma would be her first step towards becoming a
teacher. Her mother, however, had other plans for the
youngest of her five children.
Ruth was told she was to attend a “commercial school” —
a forerunner of the familiar high school secretarial track
and gain the skills that would enable her to get a job in an
office. The only thing that softened the blow for the
teenager was the fact that she could enroll in a newly
opened commercial program at St. Mary of the
Assumption.
“We just loved St. Mary’s,” Ruth remembered, “especially
Sister Cecilia Monica,” who taught the 20 students
everything from typing and shorthand to elementary
Spanish.
Manufacturing Company in Elizabethport for two years,
she left the business world when they decided it was time
for her to stay at home to raise the family they anticipated
having. Eventually they had two daughters: Jean Marie,
who is now retired from Mobil Oil Company and living in
Mesa, Arizona, and Kathleen, who is the Dean of Arts and
Sciences at the College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown.
In June 2003, Ruth had one of the greatest thrills of her life
when Joan Gallagher, then Director of Development and
then-Principal Janet Malko invited the Hunter family to
participate in the annual Awards Assembly marking the end
of the school year. Urging the students not to take their
opportunities for granted, Ms. Malko introduced Ruth as
someone who had not had the chance to attend four years of
high school and called her forward to receive an honorary St.
Mary’s high school diploma, 75 years after she had completed
the program at St. Mary’s Commercial. As the student body
stood and cheered, it was obvious that the decades separating
the 92-year-old from more recent students didn’t matter. They
clearly agreed with Ruth’s estimate of her Alma Mater: “St.
Mary’s is a wonderful place.”
Ruth passed away in 2008, but new home buyers in
Cranford recently came upon a St. Mary’s Commercial
diploma from 1928 while they were renovating. They
posted a picture of the document on Facebook hoping to
find relatives of the scholar who had studied at St. Mary’s
almost 90 years ago. The name on the diploma? Ruth
Dolores Sheridan.
The program was apparently well-regarded by the
business community, since the Underwood Typewriter
Company in New York City offered a job placement
service to any of the top five graduates who could pass
their typing and shorthand tests. “It was such an honor
when Sister Cecilia selected me to go,” Ruth recounted.
She landed a job as a secretary with Thomas Loughlin
Marine Supplies—a position she held for eight years. The
combination of her excellent training from the Sisters of
Charity and her natural ability enabled her to run the New
York office of the Maine-based company for several years
after her boss died.
Ruth had married James Hunter in 1935, and after
working as an executive secretary for the Diehl
1928 Graduates

PEP RALLY SURPRISE BOARD OF REGENTS
During 2004-2005, St. Mary’s
celebrated its 75th anniversary. At each
celebratory event, Sr. Regina O’Connell
had alumni sign a small square. Sr.
Regina sewed the squares together to
make a quilt which was hung in the first

our pep rally this past December and at
the event, Principal David Evans

TOUR DE ELIZABETH
Students and alumni participated in
the Tour De Elizabeth bike tour on
Sunday May 18, 2014. Many alumni
stopped at the St. Mary’s table to chat
about their experiences with students
who volunteered for the day. Some
students and alumni joined in the tour
and fun was had by all!
Reverend Manuel D. Rios, pastor of
Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish,
has established a Board of Regents in
support of the school's new
administration and its long-term
renewal plan. In December, principal
David Evans and Pastor Rios officially
welcomed the first six regents at the
Board’s inaugural meeting.
Regents include three members of
the 2014 Transition Team: Elliot
DeSanto ('72), Robert McGowan
('72) and Gary Reece ('64).
Joining this nucleus are alumnus,
Robert Halleck ('60), who is
retiring this year as the high school
athletic director and Patrick
Murray (’60).
Two newcomers to St. Mary's have also
been appointed as Regents: Denise
Mylson, director of marketing and
public relations at Young Audiences of
New Jersey and Erica Parkes, deputy
attorney general. Additional regents
will be named this spring.
The Regents Board will concentrate on
school operations. Top oversight
priorities include budget, enrollment
management, institutional advancement,
educational programs and overall
strategic planning.
For many years, St. Mary's has
benefited from an Advisory Board that
focuses on fundraising events that
support the high school. This alumni
group will continue its work.

STUDENTS WORK FOR
COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES
St. Mary’s School Counselor, Ms.

several in person events to help
parents and students with the
college application process.
In February, parents of juniors and
seniors filled the room of a Saturday
morning
workshop
where
information on steps in the college
application process was presented.
During the first semester, college
representatives came to St. Mary’s to
present information on their colleges
to the St. Mary’s seniors and juniors.
Juniors also attend an off-site
College Fair where they can interact
with representatives from scores of
local colleges.
Students meet with campus
representatives and make their best
cases for why they should be
accepted.
In the beginning of this semester,
several colleges came to St. Mary’s
to conduct Instant Decision Days on

events that allow students to bring
their transcripts, standardized test
scores, recommendations and
personal statements to a campus
representative for evaluation in
order to learn immediately whether Juniors Nicole Fernandes and Ashley Bolivard

2014-2015 BASKETBALL SEASON
Congratulations to our girls’ basketball team who
finished with a 19-4 record, winning the Sky Division of
the Union County Conference as well as the Benedictine
Christmas Tournament Invitational and establishing St.
Mary’s as one of the top teams in Union County.
Coach Anthony Jackson’s Lady Hilltoppers used a
smothering defense and an up-tempo offense that
wore out our opponents and gave us a season to
remember.
Senior girls basketball players – Back row: Desiree Watson; Maya Brown; Keslyn Milien, Nazjae
Imes and Ziykara Hicks; Front row: Termonica Jones and Zsade Byrd
Our boys’ team finished with a 17-7 record winning a very
tough Mountain Division of the Union County Conference,
winning The Al LoBalbo Christmas tourney and appearing
in many polls as the 15th best team in the state. Coach
Anthony Colletti’s squad was fun to watch, had a 1000 point
scorer in Dontay Julius (’15) and brought out many
colleges to scout our players. Several seniors will move on
to play at the next level, while the colleges are already
excited about the team coming back next season.
The Union County Basketball Coaches Association have
chosen Dontay one of the top five players and Frank
Rokins (’15) one of the top fifteen players in the county.
Congratulations!
Back row: Joshua Jones (’17), Keyshawn Roache (’15), Xavier Sanchez (’15), Kyle Heath
