All firearms that have been converted using the UTM Conversion Kit and UTM Ammunition must be treated as a live firearm. Follow all standard firearm safety rules. All users and bystanders must wear eye protection. If the firearm fails to fire, point the muzzle in a safe direction, wait 30 seconds and unload it carefully, avoiding the muzzle. Discharging firearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead, a substance known to cause cancer, birth defects, reproductive harm and illness or injury. Use in properly ventilated areas only. Wash hands thoroughly after any exposure. WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. PRIOR TO USE OF THE UTM CONVERSION The UTM Conversion, combined with UTM Ammunition, will permit full and realistic functioning of your firearm. Please note that the UTM Conversion and UTM Ammunition should always be used under the same operating guidelines that are specified by the firearm manufacturer instructions, and in its instructions for the use of conventional ammunition. Be sure to follow all operating instructions provided by the firearm manufacturer including, but not limited to, the cleaning and lubrication of your firearm. The proper cleaning and lubrication of your firearm is essential both to ensure your safety and for the reliability of your firearm. Before firing any ammunition, the firearm must be cleaned and lubricated. Most new firearms are coated with protective grease that is great for preventing rust and corrosion, but is not suited for lubricating the moving parts of a firearm. In order to ensure the proper functioning of your firearm with the UTM Conversion, and to ensure its reliability, you must properly break in the firearm prior to using the UTM Conversion. To do so, we recommend that the user fire, under normal operating conditions, a minimum of 100 rounds of conventional ammunition through the firearm. Always handle and operate your firearm as if you are shooting conventional live ammunition and always treat every firearm as if it were loaded! • Although your firearm will have been converted for use with UTM Ammunition, you must observe all safety precautions as you would with a standard firearm. Abide by all firearm safety rules, and remember that you - the Owner - are the ultimate firearms safety device. Guidelines for the safe use of the UTM Target Shooting Kit: • WARNING! Always inspect your firearm to ensure it has been converted using the UTM Conversion prior to firing it into the UTM cardboard target! • DANGER! Ensure that you do not fire into the UTM cardboard target either a firearm that has not been converted using the UTM Conversion, or a firearm that has been converted back to conventional ammunition! • Always wear eye and ear protection when converting firearms to prevent injury in the event of an accidental discharge. • Use UTM Conversions and UTM Ammunition only in conjunction with modern firearms that are in good condition and that have been properly maintained. • UTM Ammunition should only be used in a well maintained, properly functioning firearm which has been converted using a UTM Conversion Kit. • Ensure that there is no conventional ammunition available or present when using the UTM Conversion. DO NOT, for any reason, attempt to load ANYTHING other than UTM Ammunition into a firearm that has been converted using a UTM Conversion. • Handle and store UTM Ammunition under live ammunition controls and conditions. • The BORE and the CHAMBER of the host firearm MUST BE CLEANED AND INSPECTED prior to firing UTM Ammunition. • With the firearm unloaded, ALWAYS clean the barrel after using UTM Ammunition, in order to remove any possible obstructions. Failure to do so prior to returning to the use of conventional ammunition could result in SERIOUS INJURY / DEATH, and/or damage to the firearm. • UTM Ammunition is NOT re-loadable. Do not attempt to reload UTM Ammunition cartridges. • UTM Ammunition may discharge if the primer is struck. Handle UTM Ammunition carefully, and do not drop it. • UTM products should not be used near doors, windows, hallways, or other areas where persons, pets, or property could be in the line of fire. • UTM products should not be used near electronic equipment, or any other fragile items that could be damaged if struck by a projectile or by an ejected cartridge case. • Use only UTM Targets and inserts. Ensure the cardboard target inserts are properly inserted into the projectile trap portion of the target. • Prior to each use of the UTM Target Shooting Kit, thoroughly inspect the cardboard target insert and the projectile trap portion of the target for wear or damage. Discontinue using the UTM Target Shooting Kit if there is excessive wear to the cardboard target insert, or if damage to the projectile trap is visible. IF THE PROJECTILE TRAP IS DAMAGED, IT MUST BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE ANY FURTHER USE OF THE UTM TARGET SHOOTING KIT. Contact UTM for assistance in replacing either the projectile trap, or the cardboard target insert. pg 14 • Only shoot at the cardboard target. Shooting at anything other than the cardboard target could cause ricochets, which can lead to personal injury and property damage. Some general statements about firearm safety: • Safety is your responsibility. It is essential for your safety and the safety of others that you abide by all firearms safety rules. If you are unfamiliar with firearms, you should seek instruction and training through firearm safety courses provided by your local gun clubs, by certified instructors, or by qualified organizations. • Firearms should always be considered to be loaded and ready to fire. A loaded firearm has the potential to seriously injure or kill. You, the handler, must personally verify that the firearm is safe to handle. Never leave a firearm unattended, even if the magazine is removed. Exercise extreme caution after removing the magazine. You must personally verify that the chamber is empty before field stripping the firearm for cleaning, or for any other reason. • Always clean firearms before and after each use. • Always keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it. Store unloaded firearms and ammunition separately, out of the reach of children and unauthorized persons. • Avoid jarring or dropping a loaded firearm, as this could cause an accidental discharge. • It is always possible that ammunition may still be in the chamber of your firearm, even though a loaded or empty magazine is removed or inserted. It is also possible to accidentally chamber ammunition if the bolt is inadvertently closed on a loaded magazine. Any ammunition in the chamber of a firearm will discharge upon pulling the trigger. Always release and remove the magazine first, retract the bolt, and then visually inspect both the chamber and the magazine to ensure that no ammunition has been chambered. Always check twice! • If your firearm has a safety, keep the safety engaged until you are ready to fire. You should not, however, rely on safeties. Safeties are not a substitute for safe gun handling. Never test safeties when a firearm is loaded or pointed in an unsafe direction. Safeties can - and do - fail! • Always keep your finger off the trigger and the trigger guard (including, but not limited to, those times when you are loading, unloading, or converting the firearm) until your sights are on the target! • When squeezing the trigger of a firearm, you must expect the firearm to discharge. You, and only you, are responsible for the consequences of a discharged firearm. • Keep yourself and others clear of the firearm’s ejection port. • All users and bystanders must wear eye protection. • Never engage in horseplay while firearms are present – this could result in accidental discharge and accompanying serious personal injury, death and/or property damage. • Never use firearms while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If you are on medication, before using UTM products, talk to your doctor about whether it would be safe for you to shoot. • If the firearm fails to fire, keep it pointed in a safe direction, wait one minute, and unload it carefully, avoiding the muzzle and keeping it pointed in a safe direction. • Always keep firearms pointed in a safe direction! • Never handle a firearm while anyone is downrange of the muzzle! • Always know your target, your backstop, and what’s beyond them! • Discharging firearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead, a substance known to cause cancer, birth defects, reproductive harm, and/or illness or injury. Use firearms only in a wellventilated area, and wash your hands thoroughly after exposure. pg 15 Important Please retain this manual with your UTM Conversion.
