August 2013 - Hamilton Car Club
August 2013 Hi all, and welcome to our August bulletin. We are now well into the second half of 2013, with the days getting longer and warmer - goodbye to winter! There has been a good amount of club events run in the last month or so, keeping everyone busy. Having just competed in the 2wd rally based at Taupo race track, it was a timely reminder that Motorsport can be relaxing and good fun, with various stages set up around the track and pit roads, managing a total of 80ks of special stage and 2kms of touring in a completely fun but competitive event. Bill McEwan in his immaculate Ford Escort was there along with Dennis Carson as well. We have had good representation from our club members in other events as well with the MPOB club mans rally being run with Denis Carson joining the gravel bashers with his new Datsun rally car and Gloria McElwain co driving in her first rally with Miles as well. Hamilton also sent a timing crew over as well to look after the start and finish of stage 1 and 4, and the weather held out for a great day. Another 3 of our club members, Bernard Veryt, Mark Holand and John De Veth competed in the 12 hour endurance event run at Hampton Downs, coming away with a fantastic result. Read the report elsewhere in this bulletin. Another great concept run by Campbell Robertson from Fiat Club Waikato was a motorsport licence evening held at the club rooms for those wanting to sit their completion licence. This was a hugely successful evening with 23 people completing their licence. For anybody feeling the process may be difficult, this method of a group situation put everyone as ease. This weeks club night we have motorcycle racer Andrew Stroud as a guest speaker so should be a great night . As most of you will be aware the new club website is mostly complete, and Brent Shaw from Flashpoint has done a fantastic job but still needs more high quality photos to boost the gallery. If you have any constructive input into the content of the website, please contact a committee member Remember that your reports from events that you have competed in are always welcome. The Hampton Downs dual sprints are on next weekend with MBOP car club as a joint venture so still time to enter, and check the events page for other upcoming events. Remember that memberships were due for renewal at the end of last month, so don’t leave it to the day before an event. Steve Wilcock Club President www.hamiltoncarclub.org.nz In This Issue... Registration and payment needs to be made by Friday the 16th of August, and you can contact Quentin on 027 292 1483 or email [email protected]. Important Info Fiat Club Waikato Tarmac Series Fire extinguisher mounting The Fiat Club Waikato Tarmac Series is on again for 2013, with 2 out of 5 rounds completed already. Please note that an important amendent to the motorsport manual has taken place from January 2013: The next event is the Sainsbury Road Hillclimb on Sunday the 11th of August, with an entry fee of just $80. Check out the ‘Coming Events for Club Points’ on the next page for dates. Day Licenses If you need a day license at an event you must remember that there is now a set of questions that you need to answer. There are 10 questions and you need to get at least 8 of them correct. The Drivers Guide booklet that came out with this year’s motorsport manual has the answers. Addresses on Entry Forms At the recent enquiry into the fatality at the Hamner Rally it was noted that a number of the entry forms had illegible addresses. This was then discussed at the stewards’ meeting, and the issue of requiring a physical address was also raised. We are not able to accept post office box numbers as an address, as if the worst happens, the police will be looking for a physical address to be able to visit and break the bad news. Please ensure you fill your entry form in with where you live, not where you want your mail sent. It’s time to renew your membership We’ve included a renewal form in this month’s Bulletin which you can either post to us, or bring it along to the next club night. The membership form will also available for download from our new website. Originally started by the Taupo Car Club, this year it was run and organised by Hampton Downs itself. It was a well organised event, with thirty six cars starting on the grid, which had either entered the one, three, six or twelve hour categories. In the 2 weeks leading up to the race, Karly from Motorsport Services rang John De Veth and I, asking if we would like to drive a Porsche 997. Both John and I thought it was an opportunity that we could not miss and if we wanted to do the twelve hour we had to find two other drivers! Mark Holland (another HCC member) and Phil Gill from Pukekohe were asked, also jumping at the opportunity. We only had a few days to get organised, not leaving us much time to prepare “How do you get fit in ten days to drive a Porche in a twelve hour?” Stop drinking beer! Qualifying started on the Friday - a day before the race began, which was a nervous time for all four drivers as none of us had driven a car like this before. Tuition started early in the morning with Dave from Motorsport Services explaining how the Motec system and sequential gear box worked, which none of us were familiar with. It was a long day, with the race starting at 9am right through to 9pm. We were all hoping it would be a fine day, which it turned out to be as none of us were keen to drive in the wet for twelve hours. We all agreed to do a short one hour stint to start the race to give all four drivers have a turn. The race started well for us, with John De Veth behind the wheel, me doing the second drive, Phil Gill third and Mark Holland doing the fourth stint. It was agreed amongst our team at the start of the race that we would probably not be that competitive, as there were a lot of other faster cars and drivers in the race, so our goal was to go out and have a good time but also bring the car home in one piece. Much to our surprise after all our drivers finished their one hour stint that we were not that far away from the front of the field. As the race progressed, the one, three and six hour cars had finished and left the track, making way for the remaining cars in the twelve hour, at which point we were only four laps from the lead car. It was decided to push a bit harder, which then put in some good lap times. We had a good fuel stop and driver change under a safety flag, resulting in us being second on the track outright, giving us a slight chance to push for the lead. Unfortunately we ran out of time (“in a 12hour race”) resulting in us coming second and only one lap down. Looking back if we had not done our one hour stints making us do two extra pit stops the result could have been a little different. It was an exciting car to drive, with heaps of power, unreal brakes, a gear box that you could flat shift every gear, and had an amazing amount of grip. I really enjoyed my experience and would jump at the chance if it ever arose again. I would like to thank Dave and Karly from Motorsport Services for the opportunity to drive their car. Cheers, Bernard Verryt Hampton Downs 12 Hour, 26th-27th of July - Bernard Verryt Thanks to Motorsport Services, Time & Place Photography, and Race & Road for the photos. Fiat Club Waikato Tarmac Series, Sainsbury Road Hillclimb - Sunday, 11th of August The forecast for Sunday was not very inviting, reminding us of days gone by when Sainsbury Road threatened to give our marshals hypothermia. not take the first testing left hander on the hill and went straight ahead into the bank, rearranging the front end and wheel alignment. It will require a little more than a gentle adjustment on the wheel alignment machine unfortunately. Fortunately though, the driver was unscathed. However, on rising on Sunday it appeared the weather gods saw us favourably and the rain was not as obvious as had been promised. Thirty competitors fronted the starter, and more importantly, the clock, for our annual skid on the side of Pirongia. Another time stood out for the wrong reasons, and I haven’t heard the excuse, but the car that came second went from ~54 seconds on Run 1 to ~66 seconds on Run 2 then back to ~54 seconds on Run 3. A spin perhaps? The diversity of vehicles was the normal Mini to fire breathing four wheel drive Subaru Legacy of Allen Fretwell, interspersed with a variety of two and four wheel drive cars from Japan and Europe. The day started with a damp road but reasonable overhead conditions, and the road got drier as the day went on. The times also reflected this with practice being used sensibly by everyone to get a feel for the conditions, then, as conditions improved so did the times - generally. One of the two Nissan Pulsars decided to The day was won by Allen Fretwell in his now 3 litre turbocharged Subaru Legacy RSRA, also taking out Class D, from a newcomer to our series Matthew Buer in a four wheel drive Mitsubishi Mirage RR also in Class D. Third overall was another newcomer also running in Class D, Marcus Heke in his Subaru WRX. Upholding the honour of two wheel drive and European cars was series regular Heath Simone in his Peugeot...
