October 2–3, 2010 - Missouri Botanical Garden
October 2–3, 2010 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Welcome to the Best of Missouri Market Photo by Heather Marie Osborn I am looking forward to attending my “first” Best of Missouri Market® and the opportunity to learn more about my new home, Missouri. It is impressive to know that this event has continued to grow for nineteen years under the constant care and attention of the co-chairs Nora Stern (left) and Ellen Dubinsky (right). Their unsurpassed dedication has helped to create one of the regions most anticipated and beloved events. As these plants grow they will hide the dying bulb foliage. q Plant container-grown and balledand-burlapped trees and shrubs now. Loosen the soil in an area five times the diameter of the root ball before planting. Mulch well after watering. Continue watering, if soils are dry. q Store apples in a cool basement in old plastic sacks that have been perforated for good circulation. q Sow cover crops such as winter rye after crops are harvested. week 1 qC hristmas cactus, potted azaleas, and kalanchoe may be left outdoors until night temperatures drop to 40º F. q Continue harvesting tender crops such as winter squash and pumpkins before frost. For best storage quality, leave an inch or two of stem on each. Dig sweet potatoes before a bad freeze. 24 2010 Best of Missouri Market® ourds should be harvested when qG their shells become hard or when their color changes from green to brown. q Cover tender plants with sheets or lightweight fabric covers to protect from frost. week 2 qC annas and dahlias can be dug when frost nips their foliage. Allow the plants to dry under cover in an airy, frost-free place before storage. week 3 qT ransplant deciduous trees once they have dropped their leaves. q Monitor fruit plantings for mouse activity and take steps for control. q Continue mowing lawns until growth stops. Keep leaves raked off lawns to prevent smothering grass. Now is a good time to apply lime if soil tests indicate. week 4 qP lant tulips now. q Trees may be fertilized now, following soil test guidelines. q Place wire guards around trunks of young fruit trees for protection against mice and rabbits. q Winterize mowers before storage. Fresh vegetables are picked from the garden on the mansion grounds and used in these recipes. Corn and Avocado Salsa From the Herbal Cookery Cookbook 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 cups fresh corn kernels 1 large red onion, chopped 1 large red bell pepper, chopped ½ cup pitted green or black olives, chopped (optional) 2 garlic cloves, minced juice of 2 limes 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar ¹⁄³ cup extra-virgin olive oil ¹⁄³ cup chopped fresh cilantro, or 2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 2 ripe avocados, cut into ½ inch chunks Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a 14-inch skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the corn and cook until some of the kernels are brown and slightly dry. Combine the corn, onion, bell pepper, olives, garlic, lime juice, vinegar, ¹⁄³ cup olive oil, the cilantro, salt and pepper in a medium bowl and mix well. Marinate at room temperature for a few hours. Fold in the avocados just before serving. Note: Use as a salsa with chips, or serve over a bed of lettuce with sliced or wedge-cut tomatoes. Sweet Green Tomato Pickles From cooks.com ½ peck green tomatoes ½ cup salt 3 cups cider vinegar 1 cup water 2 cups white sugar 2 cups light brown sugar 1 box stick cinnamon ½ box whole cloves Night before, slice tomatoes, add salt, and cover with cold water. Leave overnight. In the morning, bring to a boil, let cook on medium heat until not quite tender. Drain. To make syrup: Combine remaining ingredients, bring to boil, lower heat and continue cooking for ½ hour. Add tomatoes to syrup and cook for 5 minutes. Remove tomatoes with slotted spoon and fill hot sterilized jars. Add 1 cup each of brown and white sugar to liquid and boil until thickened. Pour over tomatoes and seal. These pickles can also be made in a crock. 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 31 32 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 33 34 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 35 36 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 37 38 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 39 40 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 41 42 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 43 44 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 45 46 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 2010 Best of Missouri Market® 47 48 2010 Best of Missouri Market® The Missouri Botanical Garden opened to the public in 1859.
