President’s Message
Hi Everyone, this is Pat Kennedy
Most of you members know me, I have been with the club since it’s beginning in
1979.
First, there are some changes in Norcals officers. Ken Van Gundy has temporarily resigned as President and Car Show Chairman, so since I was Vice President, I inherited
his job and Jon Manji has accepted the job as Car Show Chairman. Thank you Jon!
WE HAVE SOME BIG SHOES TO FILL. Ken did a fantastic job and I hope he will
be back soon.
In the meantime, we must move on and the Morro Bay car show is coming up fast. I
hope to see a lot of you there, we will have a good time.
I would appreciate all the support, I can get from you members, so please attend the
meetings and activities and give me any suggestions that you might have for our club.
Lets get our cars out, start planning some short trips with the club. I would appreciate
all the support, I can get from you members, so please attend the meetings and activities and give me any suggestions that you might have for our club.
I hope to see you all at Morro Bay, May 17 - 19, and also Micke Grove Show Sept 8.
Acting President, Pat Kennedy
Editor’s Note
This issue’s cover invites you to our annual zone show we host together with the So
Cal Club. This year a caravan of folks from the Northern Lights Oldsmobile Club in
Alberta, Canada plan to be with us show day. See pages 9 and 10 for their agenda.
Zone Show application is downloadable at www.norcalolds.com.
In March I traveled to the Arizona Chapter of Oldsmobile Club of America for their
annual All Oldsmobile show. It was great, see pages 11-13.
We sent out an April supplement to the Oldsletter for an Olds Gathering/Meeting in
Stockton on April 27th. We did this because this Oldsletter may be just getting to you
near that date and we wanted you to know about it so you can plan to attend. See pg. 5.
Mark Gorton highly recommends the River City show, see page 17 for details. Lastly I
did an article on a new scale model car on the market, see pages 14-15.

Treasurer Report
I mailed our club California Statement of Information (SI-100) on 2-5-13, which is
good for two years. Update on form SI-100: I have not yet received a certified copy
form the California Secretary of State. Also, club check for filing SI-100 (check
#4026, $20.00) and check for the certified copy (check #4027, $6.00) have not been
cashed as of bank statement 3-31-13. I read an article in the San Jose Mercury News,
that because of California budget cuts, mail in forms will take much longer to process
than last year. Our NCOC banking account has $28,976.53 as of 3-31-13.
Treasurer, Dan Haggerty

Greetings From Your New NCOC Car Show Chairman
My name is Jon Manji, and I’ve been involved with OCA judging for a few years at
the national level, including assisting Ken & Lori Van Gundy at the 2011 National
Meet in Reno. I learned a lot working with Ken and Lori in the two years leading up
to the National Meet, and will try my best to maintain and hopefully improve upon the
high standards that they have brought to our shows.
I have been around Oldsmobiles since my teen years, the good old days when Oldsmobiles were everywhere and there seemed to be no end to their popularity. My first
major automotive project was helping a good friend transplant a 455 police engine
into his 1970 Cutlass. I’ve been working on and driving Oldsmobiles ever since then.
My current Oldsmobile is a 1986 442 with just over 32k miles. The 442 has been in
my family since new.
If you’re thinking about attending the upcoming Zone Show, don’t forget that the
discounted early registration period ends May 1st. The registration form was in the
last issue of the Oldsletter, or it can be downloaded from our club website: www.
norcalolds.com And don’t forget that I am available to discuss anything related to our
shows or judging. You can send me an e-mail at: [email protected] or call me at:
(916) 386-1642.
I look forward to working with all of you at our upcoming shows. Please feel free
to contact me if you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to help. We can
always use more judges and show field parking help at our shows.
A Special Note Regarding This Year’s Zone Show: Participants from the 5,000 mile,
22-day long California Dreamin’ Cruise are expected at the Show. The Cruise, hosted
by the Northern Lights Oldsmobile Club (NLOC) from Alberta Province, Canada,
will have participants from their club as well as from OCA chapters including our
own. See the article on page 9 and 10 or visit the NLOC’s website (www.oldsclub.ca)
for more information.

Northern Lights Oldsmobile Club of Canada Tour Information
CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ CRUISE:
It’s been a year in the making. I first mentioned this cruise in the spring 2012 issue
of Olds Faithful. Our caravan to California leaves from Edmonton on May 11. It’s
confirmed, we’ll be attending the Tonight Show May 20. Maybe you’ll see us if they
pan the audience. It seems our cruise has attracted a few people in California who
want to join us as well. Here is the breakdown of who is coming on the trip by registration number, the club they’re with and what they’re driving.

caravan with us from Sausalito to Morro Bay. Sure, we said. Now that is going to be
a sight to see.

All Oldsmobile Show in Arizona, March 23, 2013
The results are in
Just outside of Palm Desert, CA
the road to Scottsdale, AZ looks
pretty much the same as seen
above from Mike White’s 1950
Oldsmobile. We left Mike’s
hometown of Paso Robles at 3
AM and arrived at our motel
room in Scottsdale at 3 PM Friday Mar 22nd. No car problems
just routine stops along the way.
The Arizona Chapter of OCA
was having their annual All
Oldsmobile Show Saturday
which was the main reason
to go. In conjunction with the
show, Scottsdale has a weekly
event at the same location which
brings in hundreds of cars and
they party well into the night.
The following day, Sunday,
the Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac
show was held, again at the same
location. We attended all 3 and
had a great time. Prior to the
Shows Arizona member Fred
Mandrick had an open house
with dinner for all to all Olds
members on Friday night. It
was Great! Fred has an amazing
collection of Cutlass cars and
memorabilia.
Above, we stopped for breakfast in Beaumont, CA.
Mike’s ‘50 Olds is modernized with disc brakes,
power steering, air conditioning, later model Olds
engine with an automatic overdrive transmission.
All fresh, just like a new car!
Lower picture is Fred’s garage with all his toys!
11
There were 3 Oldsmobiles from
our club not counting Mike’s.
Arnie Schweer brought a new
acquisition, a ‘53 88 Holiday.
Hayden & Joanne Long and his
‘50 4dr sedan and Dan and Jacki
Flanagan with their ‘49 98 Club
Sedan. The So Cal Club had 3
cars I recognized, maybe more.
The judging was 1st and 2nd and
specialty awards like best display
and best of show.
Mike won best modified, Hayden best display and
Dan for long distance. We did good!
Best of show went to a Arizona member Jeff Ivener
in a 1972 442 W30.
Above right is Arnie’s ‘53, below is Hayden ‘50
with him on right accepting his award from Fred
Mandrick. Below right is Dan Flanagen with his
award. Best of Show car at bottom with owner.
12
Oops! Dan Flanagan had to
tow home his ‘49 as the transmission gave up in Arizona,
He’ll be back!
The BOP show on Sunday had
over 100 cars but I focused
my camera on the’50 Oldsmobiles. Left: Hayden, Mike,
Don Baldwin and Keith Berg
from So Cal with a black local
convertible in the lineup. Mike
won 2nd in modified while
Kieth got 1st for stock class
with his ‘50 Holiday
Above right, Mikes ‘50 coupe, above is Mike’s and
Don’s cars side by side with Don ahead in conversation.
Right, Mike grabs his award and runs off in his
Panama hat!
The trip back was done in 2 days with an overnight
in Palm Desert. Car ran great and averaged 18 MPG.

Revell Finally Makes a Model Kit of a 1950 Olds 88 Coupe
Back late in 2012 Revell came out with a ‘50 Olds coupe 1:25 scale model kit, level
3 (12 years and older). I had to have one since my full size car is the same model.
When I opened it up it had 197 pieces with instructions. I was intimidated as I had
not built a plastic model since 1970.
I went on line and checked out different forums of model builders and joined Model
Car Magazine forum. I soon learned enough to start the project. First I was not
happy with the fit and shape of the grille so I took apart a ‘50 Olds dicast model
of a bank I got in 1999 and used the grille and front bumper with modifications. A
Dremel tool kit is a great asset when building something this small.
I wanted this model to look like my real car so paint, engine, wheels, exhaust system, interior, etc., had to match. I lucked out with the color as the hobby store had
a dark pearl green in a spray which I painted over a black base. Although small, the
same process is used as on a real car. Prime coat, sand, color coat, sand, clear coat,
and rub out. The engine was a challenge as I needed to put on 3 carbs, finned valve
covers, etc. I had to think small and build thing out of tie wrap ends and fuses, stuff
I had laying around. The dual exhaust I did in solder and it took 10 hours. I know a
shop can do it in half that time to a real car. The wheels I took from a Revell model
of a modified ‘32 Ford which matched mine. Working this small for me wasn’t easy
as magnifiers were very necessary and my finger too big most of the time!
All in all this took the better of 2 months to complete. Not too much fun but a satisfying job when done. Larry Ewing
Above is my real full size Olds
as shown at Morro Bay last
year. Below is the model built
displayed on my rear bumper.
Pretty small huh?
Above is the kit with 197 pieces.
14
Left is the bottom view
that shows my 10 hour
labor dual exhaust. The
model is very accurate
with the correct sway bars
trailing arms etc.
The hood is removable and engine detail is good although I had to modify
to match my full size car.
I photographed my license
plate an reduced it to fit the
model
My modified engine bay with 3
carbs and wires. The carbs were
made out of tie wrap ends and the
air cleaners out of fuse ends. My
wire choice is too fat and I plan to
change them soon.
Above is my full size car as seen in Reno 2011 and above right is the model finished

More Model Stuff Larry Ewing
While doing research online on my model I came across a modified 1:25th scale
car a guy was making out of resin. He had made a fastback and 2 door sedan version of the ‘50 Oldsmobile based on the Revell kit. Which means you can buy his
bodies and use all the parts out of the Revell kit to finish. So since I have a full
size fastback and a sedan, not a 2dr but a 4 dr, I ordered the two.
During our transaction I found out this guy, Tom Coolidge knew the late Woodie
Hyde (‘50 Olds Guru) and had actually sold a ‘50 88 Holiday to him in the late
70’s. As we talked more he sent a picture of the car and it looked like the car past
member John Ferris once owned. Turned out is was! Small world! Tom modified the car in the 70s buy adding a 425 cu in Olds engine and a 4 speed. He took
many pictures of his build and had them posted on line.( http://public.fotki.com/
tomcoolidge/another-50-oldsmobi/ ) I contacted John and he confirmed he knows
Tom well and added more info. Turns out John bought a 3 carb set up from Tom,
added a turbo 400 and headers. John took the Olds to the last drags at Fremont in
1988 and turned 12.8 sec at 108 mph in the quarter mile! It was very fast!
John sold the car to a guy in the state of Washington a few years later and lost
contact. Fast forward to now and I remember a So Cal member Dave Hayward
buying a Holiday out of WA recently. I checked and it is in fact the same car John
once owned. Dave is doing a complete frame off restoration and keeping the powerful 425. We will probably see the car done next year at our Zone show.
On the right is a picture of how
the Holiday looked when John
owned in the late 80s.
Below is Tom Coolidge’s fastback 1:25th resin and below to
the right is his 2 dr sedan. The
2 dr sedan has the same top
size as a 4 dr therefore I will
