Magna Carta Kent is home to a 1300 copy of Magna Carta in the historic market town of Faversham, and the Garden of England is already preparing for the commemorations of the 800th anniversary of its sealing in Runnymede. Canterbury is one of five Charter cities as it was the home of Archbishop Stephen Langton, who opposed King John and in 1213 revived the ancient charter of Henry I. This pressure, combined with the military power of the Barons, led directly to the showdown at Runnymede. Dover and Rochester are also important sites connected with the story. The national Magna Carta 800 Trails include a three day Kent & East Sussex itinerary incorporating Canterbury, Dover, Faversham and Rochester. For more information see www.magnacartatrails.com. Magna Carta will go on tour during 2015, and destinations in Kent include Canterbury, Rochester and Faversham – dates to be confirmed. July 2015 - The 12th century manuscript the Textus Roffensis will be displayed in the crypt of Rochester Cathedral as part of the Hidden Treasures, Fresh Expressions project and the 800th anniversary commemorations of the Magna Carta. The medieval book contains two manuscripts: a collection of documents including the Law of Ethelbert who was the King of Kent from 560 to 616AD, and the oldest of the Rochester Cathedral registers. 2015 Siege Tour - In 1215 Rochester Castle was garrisoned by rebel barons, and endured an epic siege by King John. To commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Siege of Rochester Castle, a self-guided walking tour of Rochester will highlight the Castle and other important connections in the story. This will be accompanied by a dedicated exhibition in the Guildhall Museum, Rochester. Battle of Waterloo 2015 is the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, the final engagement in the Napoleonic Wars. Victory made a hero of the Duke of Wellington and saw an end to the French Empire’s era of expansionism. The Duke of Wellington was appointed Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1829, nearly 15 years after the Battle of Waterloo, while he still held the office of Prime Minister. Walmer Castle in Kent serves as the official residence of the Lord Wardens of the Cinque Ports and it was here that the Duke of Wellington died on 14 September, 1852. The room today looks much as it did then. The Duke of Wellington’s Battle map, used in the Battle of Waterloo, is on show at the Royal Engineers Museum in Chatham. English Heritage is reinterpreting the principle rooms at Walmer Castle to shed light on its intriguing life and to tell the stories of the Duke of Wellington and other fascinating figures from the castle’s history. Launching in Spring/Summer 2015 the new exhibition will contain updated displays which will explore: - Wellington’s career, his death at Walmer, his state funeral and the celebrity status he attained during and after his life How Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger met his ministers at Walmer Castle and orchestrated the defences against invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte 50th Anniversary of the death of Sir Winston Churchill Chartwell in Kent was the much-loved Churchill family home and the place from which Sir Winston drew inspiration from 1924 until the end of his life. The rooms remain much as they were when he lived there, with pictures, books and personal mementoes evoking the career and wide-ranging interests of a great statesman, writer, painter and family man. The hillside gardens reflect Churchill's love of the landscape and nature. They include the lakes he created, Lady Churchill's rose garden, the kitchen garden and the Marycot, a playhouse created especially for the youngest Churchill daughter. 15th November 2014 – 13th February 2015 Death of a Hero exhibition at Chartwell explores the latter weeks of the Great Briton's life, his funeral and the lasting legacy he has left with us today. The exhibition gives you the chance to see never before seen objects from our collection and shed light on the loss of one of the greatest statesmen in history. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/chartwell Opening of the Dreamland Heritage Park, Margate The 2015 season will see the much-anticipated opening of Phase One of the world's first amusement park, featuring thrilling and historical rides. Dreamland Heritage Park will be a 21st-Century tourist attraction in Margate, based around the listed Scenic Railway and Cinema building, and incorporating stunning yet chic vintage designs. The park will be the world's first amusement park of historic rides that will authentically recreate a thrilling seaside amusement park from the past. Considered to be the oldest-surviving amusement park in the Great Britain, Dreamland's origins date back to the great British railway boom of the early 1860s when, in its original form, the Hall by the Sea (originally a railway terminal building) was operated by the famous circus impresario, 'Lord' George Sanger. For generations Dreamland thrilled and delighted visitors to Margate and sustained her community. In 2006 the amusement park closed following an announcement to build housing on the site, triggering a six year campaign to save Dreamland as a vital aspect of British seaside heritage. The Dreamland Trust emerged from the campaign, and worked with partners to secure £12m of public funding to restore Dreamland and its jewels: the Grade II* listed Scenic Railway, Grade II* listed cinema complex and Grade II* listed menagerie cages. www.dreamlandmargate.com New Eurostar Route to Marseilles, France from Ashford International station Expected to launch in May 2015 Opening of the Huguenot Museum, Rochester A new museum dedicated to the Huguenots who fled France in the 17th and 18th Century and housed in the French Hospital in Rochester. It will include three exhibitions and an archive and research centre. Opening of The Wing experience at the Battle of Britain Memorial, Capel le Ferne The National Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne between Dover and Folkestone is dedicated to Churchill’s famous “few” who fought in the skies overhead to keep the country free from invasion. The Wing will not be a museum but an experience, using high-tech effects, video walls and other special techniques in order to show something of what it was like for the Few in the summer and early autumn of 1940. The Wing will be built in the shape of a Spitfire wing, complete with its famous uplift. Eastgate House, Rochester reopens as new exhibition and community space Eastgate House is a grade I listed building and a treasured landmark in the heart of historic Rochester. This beautiful Elizabethan townhouse was built in the late 1590s for Sir Peter Buck, who was Clerk of the Cheque at Chatham’s Royal Dockyard and Mayor of Rochester. Throughout the centuries the house has been a girls' boarding school, a restaurant, the city museum and the Dickens Museum as well as a family home. It also features as Westgate in Dickens' novel, The Pickwick Papers and as the Nun's House in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The gardens, annexe building and cottage were designed by Sir Guy Dawber in the 1920s. Here you will find the Swiss chalet where Dickens worked on some of his most famous novels. Previously sited at Dickens’ home in Gad’s Hill, it was moved to Rochester in the 1960s. Company profile: “Canterbury’s past is as rich as it comes” says the latest Lonely Planet guide to Britain. This world-famous cathedral city was one of medieval Europe’s great places of pilgrimage and knowledge. Today – with its international visitors and two Universities – it still has a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. Less than an hour from London, it’s in that corner of England that’s almost touching France. People come here from across the globe for world-class heritage, for culture and festivals, to visit and to study, to shop, eat and hang out. The extraordinary Cathedral dominates the medieval streets within the city walls. Among the listed buildings, a boldly modern theatre – named after the city’s famous son Christopher Marlowe – has been built on the river bank, and an art museum has been restored and doubled in size. To the south is St Augustine’s Abbey, part of the World Heritage Site, and England’s first seat of learning. There’s something warm and mellow about this intimate city. Crowds throng around the entrance to the Cathedral and in the busy high street. Thousands of students add to the vibe. It’s lively and fun. But it’s also remarkably easy – in a moment – to step off the beaten track into some quiet oasis where you’ll hear nothing but birdsong, and the splash of oars on the narrow, gently flowing River Stour. You may be in a city, but you get a strong sense of being in the Garden of England too. There are riverside gardens and even a cider-making orchard within the city itself. Then there’s all the local produce in cafes, pubs and restaurants: Romney Marsh lamb, Kent cherries, ale from local hops, award-winning fizz from Kentish vineyards. To the north of the city is one of England’s largest ancient woodlands, the Blean. And, less than a 7-mile cycle away at Canterbury’s coast, there’s the seaside town of Whitstable and Herne Bay. What’s new? The revitalised, extended and restored Beaney House of Art & Knowledge offering state of the art special and permanent exhibition galleries and a varied programme of events and activities for all ages. Canterbury Festival, Kent’s International Arts Festival - two weeks of world class art and culture in October every year. Canterbury Cathedral – explore beautiful manuscripts dating back to the 7th century, learn how stained glass was made or see the Cathedral stonemasons in action through our ‘behind the scenes’ programme. The Canterbury Tales – through Chaucer’s famous tales, follow the medieval pilgrimage from London to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury. NEW – join our costumed characters for an interactive tour. Following a rejuvenating makeover in March 2013 Canterbury Roman Museum provides a fascinating and family friendly insight into Roman Canterbury. Events – Canterbury Food & Drink Festival (September) Whitstable Oyster Festival (end July/beginning August), Herne Bay Festival (August) and much more!
