We would like to express
our profound gratitude
to Paul Davis and Jon
Davis for their generous
donation of their family’s
Knabe grand piano—built
in 1975—to St. Michael’s
Episcopal Church in
Gainesville, Florida, in
memory of their parents
Madeline and Marvin
Davis.

The history of Wm. Knabe & Co. began
when Wilhelm Knabe (1803-1864)
who was born in Kreuzburg, Germany,
immigrated to the United States and
settled in Baltimore, Maryland, where
he apprenticed with piano maker
Henry Hartye. Knabe then partnered
with Henry Gaehle to found the piano
company Knabe & Gaehle. After
Wilhelm’s death in 1864, his sons
William and Ernest continued the family
tradition. In 1926, the Knabe piano
was selected to be the official piano
of the New York Metropolitan Opera.
Knabe pianos are handmade, limitedproduction instruments created in the
finest tradition of more than 300 years of
piano building. “The rich and wondrous
tonal quality of the Knabe has often
been described as the nearest approach
to the human singing voice.” For more
