COB VETTE NEWS ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Volume, 34 Issue 12 December -- 2015 Presidents Corner What’s Happening This Month Hello everyone, The Holiday season is upon us. It is my favorite time of the year! The only thing better would be to drive our Vettes in December and January. Another great Christmas Brunch is coming up and our final count of members attending is around 99. Thanks again to Karen and Lowell Rothenberger for chairing again and it looks like the weather will hold up for our event. Hope to see you all there. Please don’t forget to bring a new unwrapped toy for our Toy’s for Tot’s Campaign. I hope to see some more of our winter cruise night’s to your local eateries. Let’s keep the C.O.B. family together during the winter months. I urge everyone to start thinking of things and places to go to in the upcoming corvette season. It will be here before we know it. I know Lee has already been in contact with our friends at the York Corvette Club regarding the up and coming Harrisburg Mecum Auction for us to be pushers. It was a lot of fun and I hope we can get a bigger group of us to go down and join us. Finally I would like to thank the entire body of Corvettes of Buffalo for supporting me as President in the last 3 years along with my Officers and Board members. I have had a lot of wonderful memories being President. Representing you has been a pleasure and an honor. Thanks again for the chance! I have all the faith in the world in the new President and Officers coming in. Let’s give them the same support that you gave me and my officers. One last time Drive Safe Mike B. We are both very excited about being a part of the Corvette Club of Buffalo. My story is not much different than any other young guy growing up. We all loved cars. I remember the thrill of watching a 1956 Corvette rumble down Abbott rd. At the sight of that streamlined car and the sound it made taking off from a red light, was all I needed to know that one day I had to own one. When I came home from the service, I headed to a dealership and took a 1967 Corvette 427 for a test drive. As I pulled into my driveway to show my dad, he immediately told me that I could not only afford the car payment and the gas but, that the insurance would “kill me”. As life would have it, I started a career and a family and the hopes of having a Vette grew further and further from my mind. Every now and then however, I would see a Corvette drive down the street and memories of that “67” I drove would come right back to me. A couple of years ago, very close friends of ours bought a 2006 Corvette. When I laid my eyes on that beauty, it started all over again. I wanted a Vette of my own. At that time they told us about the “Corvette Club of Buffalo” and how much they enjoyed it. My wife and I agreed that life was too short and it was time to finally get that Corvette. I started looking on line and found a 2007 Corvette convertible at a place in Florida and we bought it. We had it shipped to Buffalo and the rest is history. My wife really had fun with the idea that we bought it on line. She told me “you won’t buy a bottle of aspirin on line but a Corvette you do”. We are both looking forward to joining “the club”, getting to know all of you better and participate in the activities. Just a funny side note. I bought my Corvette from “The Toy Store” in Largo, Florida. When I went to the bank to get a cahiers check, the teller asked “who should I make this out to?” I answered “the toy store”. She then asked me, “are you sure you’re buying a car?” Thank you, The Strong’s [Getting ready to take my granddaughter for a ride] CORVETTES of BUFFALO 4 CHRISTMAS TRIVIA QUESTIONS 1) What is the color of the berries of the mistletoe plant? 2) Which country does St. Nicholas originally belong to? 3) Which country can be credited with the creation of the Christmas beverage, eggnog? 4) In the song, "Silver Bells" what is dressed in holiday style? 5) What automobile manufacturer was born on Christmas Day 1878? 6) In the poem, "The Night Before Christmas" Santa Clause is used how many times? 7) Which American actress plays the Ghost of Christmas Present in the film “Scrooged”? 8) In which year did the US postal system first issue Christmas stamps? 9) What came first -- the book or the movie “Miracle on 34th Street”? 10) What carol contains the line, "Star with royal beauty bright"? (Trivia answers on page 12) ================================================================== In 1953 the original front emblem and horn button (Fig 2) was designed to show a checkered flag crossed with an American flag. The design was changed when it was discovered that using an American flag on a commercial product is illegal. The American flag was changed to a flag showing the Chevrolet “bow-tie” emblem and a French fleur-de-lis symbol reflective of the French etymology of the Chevrolet name. Run by the experienced hands of Pratt & Miller but working closely with GM, there’s also no arguing that the core team of four drivers has been one of the key factors of success for Corvette Racing. So it comes as no surprise that Corvette Racing announced the re-signing of its four core drivers, Oliver Gavin, Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia, and Tommy Milner. They will be driving an evolution of the Corvette C7.R that includes several changes, including a switch to E20 racing fuel and some aerodynamic tweaks. “We are pleased to have the Corvette Racing driver lineup set for 2016,” said Mark Kent, Director of Chevrolet Racing. “Antonio, Jan, Oliver, and Tommy have been behind the wheel of the familiar yellow Corvettes for several seasons now. Their ability to work cohesively has resulted in numerous key race wins and championships. CORVETTES of BUFFALO 6 We are proud of the accomplishments these drivers and Corvette Racing have delivered, and we look forward to more success.” While the team occasionally brings on a couple of extra drivers for endurance events, this core group of four drivers have been racing together since 2012. All four drivers have earned ALMS GT class championships in recent years, and this year they took the GTE class victory at the annual running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the question of drivers for the 2016 season settled, Corvette Racing can focus on the last race of the 2015 season at Petit Le Mans, as well as getting ready for a run at the 2016 championship. How many victories can this quartet of skilled racers rack up next year? CORVETTES of BUFFALO 7 Astronauts with their Corvettes Alan Shepard showed up to space training in 1959 driving his '57 Chevy Corvette. After becoming the first American in space, GM handed over the keys to a special 1962 Corvette as thanks for his bravery. And thus began a love affair between Astronauts and Corvettes. Though we must credit Shepard with being the first astronaut we know of to own a Corvette, former Indy 500 winner and GM dealer Jim Rathmann deserved credit for making sure the guys with The Right Stuff all drove the same car. With a Cadillac-Corvette dealership close to the Space Center in Florida, Rathmann offered astronauts "special" lease terms. According to GM, six of the Mercury astronauts took advantage of the arrangement and drove out with Corvettes. Shepard and Virgil "Gus" Grissom famously dueled in their Corvettes, with Grissom upgrading his '67 with faster gearing and room for wider racing tires. In 1969, Apollo 12 astronauts Charles Conrad, Dick Gordon, and Alan Bean were so smitten with the 'Vette they all ordered custom 390-hp 427 Stingray coupes made out with a goldon-black color scheme designed by Bean himself. It's worth pointing out that one of the original astronauts did not drive a Corvette. John Glenn decided to get a station wagon because he had a family. We're guessing Glenn was also the designated driver for the astronaut's many outings. CORVETTES of BUFFALO 8 Save the Wave Last month we had the “Rules of the Wave”. This month we explain the “Meaning of the Wave”. Ever since Corvette No. 00001 first met Corvette No. 00002 on the road, their drivers saluted each other with waves. Today, unfortunately, this grand and glorious tradition is wavering. There's one item of standard equipment that comes as a pleasant surprise to every new Corvette owner. It's an instant wave of recognition he or she receives when they meet one of their ilk's on the road. The first time it happens, they will be taken by surprise. They immediately think: 1. They have been mistaken for Sterling Moss. 2. Their lights are on. 3. They have been given the bird. Soon, however, the new Corvette owner anticipates, indeed even relishes, encountering other Corvettes as they drive. During this period, they experiment with their waves, running the gamut from the gaping "YooHoo" to the ultra-cool "two finger flip." They perfect their timing, making sure they affect neither a too-early wave, nor the jaded "oh brother" too-late variety. Determined not to be one upped, he even develops a defense mechanism for non-wavers, usually settling on the "Wave? My hand was just on the way to scratch my head" approach. (This is especially useful when you're not driving your Corvette, but you forget, and like a dummy, you wave anyway.) Indeed, one of the most perplexing problems facing a would-be waver is what to do when driving next to a fellow Corvette owner. Passing him going in the opposite direction is one thing. Greeting are exchanged, and that's that. But what happens when you pull up next to a guy at a light, wave, nod, smile and then pull to him at the next light, a block later. Wave again? Nod bashfully? Grin self-consciously? Ignore him? Or take the chicken's way out and turn down the next side street? If you're expecting an answer, you won't find it here. Sad to say, some questions don't have any answers. Girl-type Corvette drivers also have a unique problem: to wave or not to wave. The miss or misses who borrows her man's Corvette for the first time is immediately faced with this quandary. Should she wave first and look overly friendly, or ignore the wave and look like a snob? Most ladies who drive their own Corvettes prefer to suffer the latter rather than take a chance of being misread. For this reason, all girls are excused for occasionally failing to return a well-meaning wave. So are new owners who are still learning the ropes. There is no excuse, however, for a guy who refuses to return a wave, not out of ignorance, but of arrogance or apathy. While this type of behavior is the exception to the rule, it seems a few owners of newer models refuse to recognize anything older than theirs, while some others simply won't wave, period. Boo on them. These ding-a-lings don't seem to realize that they are helping to squash a tradition that had its beginnings back when most of us were still driving tootsie toys. You now know the meaning of "Save CORVETTES of BUFFALO the Wave." 9 Excessive Brake Dust on Wheels The wheels on some 2005-2016 Corvette models may collect an excessive amount of brake dust. This is due to the high-performance brake pad material — one of the by-products of the pad material is black dust — and the large openings in the wheels between the spokes, which highlights the brake dust. The brake dust is considered a normal characteristic. Refer to the Exterior Care section of the vehicle’s owner manual for cleaning instructions. The vehicle may have either painted, aluminum, or chrome-plated wheels. (Fig. 9) It’s recommended to keep the wheels clean using a soft clean cloth with mild soap and water. Rinse with clean water. After rinsing thoroughly, dry with a soft clean towel. A wax may then be applied. Fig 9 TIP: Chrome wheels and other chrome trim may be damaged if the vehicle is not washed after driving on roads that have been sprayed with magnesium, calcium or sodium chloride. These chlorides are used on roads for conditions such as ice and dust. Always wash the vehicle’s chrome with soap and water after exposure. The surface of these wheels is similar to the painted surface of the vehicle. Use only approved cleaners on aluminum or chrome plated wheels. Do not use strong soaps, chemicals, abrasive polishes, abrasive cleaners, cleaners with acid, or abrasive cleaning brushes. Use chrome polish only on chrome-plated wheels, but avoid any painted surface of the wheel, and buff off immediately after application. Do not use chrome polish on aluminum wheels. Do not drive the vehicle through an automatic car wash that has silicone-carbide tire cleaning brushes, which could damage the aluminum or chrome-plated wheels. CORVETTES of BUFFALO 10 Reprinted from Top Tier Gas: http://www.toptiergas.com Top Tier Detergent Gasoline TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is the premier standard for gasoline performance. Seven of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Audi recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance. Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction. These automakers have raised the bar. TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline help drivers avoid lower quality gasoline which can leave deposits on critical engine parts, which reduces engine performance. That's something both drivers and automakers want to avoid. Why TOP TIER The intention of the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards is to create a winning situation for gasoline retailers, auto manufacturers and drivers. Currently, many gasoline retailers provide fuels with lowerquality additive packages that can build up deposits on fuel injectors and on intake valves. Others can build up deposits in combustion chambers and may lead to intake valve sticking. These lower levels of additives can have negative impacts on engine performance and vehicle responsiveness. In addition, all gasoline outlets carrying the brand of the approved retailer must meet the TOP TIER standards. Additional gasoline retailers are added to the TOP TIER list as they meet the standards. The retailers known to be on the TOP TIER list are shown below. TOP TIER Gasoline Retailers: USA 76 Stations Aloha Petroleum ARCO Beacon BP Chevron Cenex Conoco Costco Wholesale CountryMark Diamond Shamrock Entec Stations ExpressConvenienceCenters Exxon Hawaii Fueling Network (HFN) Holiday Station stores Kwik Trip / Kwik Star MFA Oil Co. Mobil Ohana Fuels Phillips 66 QuikTrip Road Ranger Shamrock Shell Sinclair Suncor Energy Inc. Super America Texaco Tri-Par Oil Co. Valero Characteristics of Top Tier gasoline In order to be certified as Top Tier, a gasoline must pass a series of performance tests that demonstrate specified levels of: 1) deposit control on intake valves; 2) deposit control on fuel injectors; 3) deposit control on combustion chambers; 4) prevention of intake-valve sticking. Gasoline marketers agree when they sign on to Top Tier program that all their grades of gasoline meet these standards. However, premium grade gasolines may have yet higher levels of detergent additives. Typically, Top Tier gasolines will contain two to three times the amount of detergent additives currently required by the EPA. The extra additives are estimated to cost less than a cent per gallon. In addition to the detergent additive requirement, Top Tier gasoline cannot contain metallic additives, because they can be harmful to a car's emissions-control systems. This car was in storage back in 1987 after it was in a front end collision that the owner never got around to fixing. He called Steve and asked him if he was interested in buying . Steve went down to Virginia to get the car and all the parts so we could put it together . When you look at the pictures, the car was stored inside but , broken front nose piece with the headlight assemblies was left out side for years, to the weather and is rusted up. My first job was to save as much of the headlight assemblies that I can, because of the cost of replacements. It is very important that the headlights work properly when the car is restored. In this article I will show the damage and what is needed to get this car back to show quality. Steve had to rebuild the carburetor, change the oil, gas, battery, and then crank the motor until it showed oil pressure. Then he fired up the motor and it sounded very strong. With the motor running we can check what works like the blower and wipers motors, because it is easier to work on before the front clip is glued on the car. Next article I will explain what we plan do to get the electricals’ to work and then put the front clip on the Corvette. On one trip to “pick up a junk pickup truck,” Mike walked into an old garage in Milwaukee to discover “a ’57 Vette with eight feet of stuff piled on top of it.” Mike recalls telling the owner of the property, “Holy @$#%, that’s a ’57 Vette!!!” Unperturbed, the man replied back, “Yeah, there’s two more.” “What!!!” Luckily, Mike’s wife snapped a photo of the ’57, partially obscured by acetylene bottles. A second Vette stashed away in the same garage was also a ’57, but with no drivetrain and hit “really, really, really” hard in the front. The third Vette was a ’63 convertible, parked, oddly in “its own garage that was locked.” Mike wanted a closer look at the ’63, but the garage had no key. He could see the car dimly “through a little hole in the glass where paint had chipped away. Exactly how it happened is CORVETTES of BUFFALO 14 I walked into the parking lot. I said, Wow, what a great garage. And the sister said to me, ‘You want to buy it?’” That’s when Mike got the grand tour of the garage, which had been a body shop located in a residential neighborhood. An old house, also needing lots of work, was part of the property. “We walked through. They gave me a price. I said I’ll take it.” The price included the three Vettes, without which there probably would not have been a deal. Mike said the ’63 “was bought for the sister when she was 18.” Later, he found a canceled check for the ’63 in the attic of the old house. She had a small fender-bender and parked the Vette in 1973. Both ’57s were bought at an auction in the mid-1960s and had been parked since 1969, when the body shop closed. The red ’57 had no drivetrain and major body damage. The Cascade Green ’57, however, was complete, featuring a base 283 engine and a body in the process of being customized when stored in 1969. “They had trimmed the front fenders down to make it look like an XK-E Jaguar.” Mike snapped this photo of the ’57 as he first saw the Vette in the old garage. Mike believes the ’57 came with the base four-barrel 283, seen here. The ’63 convertible has original Sebring Silver paint and is complete. CORVETTES of BUFFALO The ’63 was stored in this single-car garage from 1973 15 The ’63 came with the base 327 four-barrel. Mike mentioned he also found something “cool – a roll of unprocessed film, not regular 35mm film, in the attic of the old house. It cost me $60 to develop the film and make prints.” The cool part is the film hid pictures of a Corvette in the shape of the Corvette Mako Shark II. Mike does not know the year the film was shot or the location. Maybe somebody can tell us. The roll of film revealed this photo of a car resembling GM’s Mako Shark II. Is this the real Mako Shark II or a kit from many years ago?
