Medela is proud to announce the launch of Preemie+, a new,
evidenced-based pumping program that helps mothers of
premature infants get significantly more milk in less time.
In addition, Medela is launching a series of new education
programs to educate NICU professionals on best practices
and the life and cost saving benefits of feeding more human
milk in the NICU.

Because Every Drop Counts™
Pioneering Research
Medela teamed up with Paula Meier, RN, DNS, FAAN and
researchers from Rush University Medical Center (RUMC)
in Chicago, to investigate the unique sucking pattern of a
newborn. Previously, breastpumps could only simulate
the nutritive sucking pattern of a healthy infant during mature
lactation, after the milk supply had established. Yet in the first few
days after birth, the maternal milk supply is limited. During
this time infants suck more irregularly with rapid sucks and
longer pauses.
Medela and the RUMC team hypothesized that this sucking
pattern may be a critical first step in establishing an adequate
milk volume. Pump-dependent mothers (such as mothers
of premature infants) do not receive this very different
stimulation to the breasts because their babies are unable to
suck in this manner.

Through research and further investigation Medela
developed Symphony Preemie+. Meier then conducted
a blinded randomized clinical trial that showed amazing
results. It found that when Symphony Preemie+ was used
in combination with Medela’s Standard 2.0 program, it
produced significantly more milk in less time compared to
the Standard 2.0 alone.
Outstanding Clinical Trial Results:
Improving NICU Outcomes with Human
Milk: Research and Education are Key
Research clearly shows that high doses of human milk in
the first 14-28 days post-birth are important in reducing
the relative risk for costly and disabling morbidities. In fact,
research shows a clear dose response effect between
dose of human milk and reduction in risk for several
disabling morbidities. This reduction in risk potentially
translates into lower health care costs.
By day 6, mothers achieved as much milk as
mothers of exclusively breastfeeding term
infants (530 ml).
To learn more about how human milk translates to better
health outcomes and lower costs, click here.
By day 10, mothers achieved 71% more
milk output.
Medela is committed to helping NICUs improve outcomes
through education on the critical importance of feeding
more human milk in the NICU.
More than twice the number of mothers
achieved the milk output target of 500 ml/day.
On average, mothers pumped 124 fewer
minutes during the first 14 days.

Symphony, but for Medela, it
is about more than that,
“
By day 14, 36% more mothers achieved the
milk output target of > 350 ml/day post birth.
“Preemie+ is important as it is upgraded technology for the
Symphony, but for Medela, it is about more than that,” said
Amy O’Malley, RN, MSN, Medela Education Manager. “We
want to fully support increased use of human milk in the
NICU and have developed numerous new programs that
educate health care professionals on the latest research
behind human milk. These programs will teach NICU
professionals how to establish and implement best
practices to translate the evidence about human milk into
better outcomes.”

Donor Milk – Medela
Supports the Most
Vulnerable Babies
Since the early 1980s, milk banks have disappeared
from numerous hospitals across the world. However,
this trend is now beginning to change. Setting
up and running a milk bank requires extensive knowledge
on the handling of human milk together with
considerable administrative effort. This includes, for
example, a careful selection process of the donors, their
Baar, Switzerland, April 28, 2009 - Human milk contains
nutrients and antibodies that are essential for a baby’s
development, particularly those born prematurely. When
these tiny babies or other babies in hospital suffering
from different conditions cannot be breastfed by their

the milk and ensuring its perfect pasteurization. Leading

mothers, pasteurized donor human milk from a milk
bank is the next-best solution. Medela is supporting the
return of milkbanks by providing recognized experts,
such as Dr. Ben Hartmann, the opportunity to speak
about the development of milkbanks and the great
efforts required to ensure increased survival rates and
improved quality of life for these vulnerable infants.
Premature babies are particularly susceptible to
infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Ensuring
that these babies have a plentiful supply of human milk
results in a decreased risk of developing necrotizing
enterocolitis, a life-threatening condition resulting in
inflammation of the intestines in these babies. The natural

Having a premature baby is a very stressful event for
a mother. As research shows, human milk provides
significant benefits for the growth and development of
premature babies. Mothers can participate in the care
of their baby by providing their breastmilk. However, the
emotional strain and worry about their newborn infant
can sometimes result in a mother’s reduced ability to
produce enough milk. Pasteurized donor human milk
from a milk bank is the next best thing, helping baby to
develop and reassuring parents that their baby is getting
the best substitute possible.

success by incorporating the latest scientific insights
and evidence into practice.

positive trends towards a professional reintroduction
of milk banks. For that same reason, Medela is
supporting the Third International Breastfeeding and
Lactation Symposium in Vienna in autumn 2009 as one
of the event’s main sponsors.
The enormous efforts by scientists, physicians,
and numerous hospitals, together with Medela,
are undertaken for the benefit of these vulnerable babies.
The tragic events in China as the result of contaminated
milk powder have again brought into question the
wide spread practice of providing babies with artificial
baby milk and have reawakened global interest in
breastfeeding and the redevelopment of milk banks.

Medela’s Freestyle™
Wins International
Design Award
Freestyle named to list of coveted
2009 red dot product design winners
Medela, the world market leader in breastpump technology
is proud to announce that its innovative new hands-free
breastpump, Freestyle™, has won the coveted 2009 red
dot design award.
The red dot design award, with origins dating back to
1955, is the world’s largest and most renowned design
competition. This year, 2,321 products were entered from
49 nations in three divisions consisting of product design,
communication design and design concept. The product
design award division consisted of seventeen categories
ranging from households and kitchens to life science and
medicine. Medela’s Freestyle breastpump received one of
53 red dot product design awards in the life science and
medicine category.
“
Our end goal was to
meet the needs of busy
mothers across the globe
and to provide the highest
quality of product possible.
“
“As the lead industrial designer on the product, I am
honored to accept this prestigious award on behalf of the
team, which spent years researching and developing this
innovative product. Our end goal was to meet the needs
of busy mothers across the globe and to provide the highest quality of product possible. From the usability, to the
mechanics, to the aesthetics, every detail was scrutinized,
well thought out and tested with mothers,” said Jill Solberg,
manager, industrial design, Medela.
Freestyle is the first rechargeable, hands-free, doubleelectric breastpump to give moms true pumping
mobility. The breastpump was developed following five
years of research as well as hundreds of hours spent
interviewing health care professionals and observing more
than 1,000 mom-testers. The result of this extensive
research is a hands-free breastpump that is revolutionary small, weighing less than a pound, but exceedingly
powerful with Medela’s research-based 2-Phase
Expression® technology that allows moms to get more
milk in less time. Freestyle has a suggested retail price
of $379.99 and is now available at specialty and mass
retailers for purchase. To find a location near you, visit
www.medelafreestyle.com.
“Successful products are in so far different from less
successful products that they can survive in the real
world,” explains design expert Professor Dr. Peter Zec,
initiator of the red dot design award. “Successful participation in a design competition can already be an initial sign
of a product’s later commercial success, because these
competitions allow an objectification of otherwise often
very subjective design decisions.” Receiving an award
in an internationally renowned design competition such
as the red dot design award was therefore an important
indicator whether a product had the potential to succeed
internationally.
Products submitted to the red dot design award are
assessed by an international jury consisting of renowned
design experts. They examine and test the products
and assess them according to criteria such as degree of
innovation, functionality, ergonomics, longevity, ecological
compatibility and clarity of function. ■
