A knack for Giving 2010 Wayne & Arletta Herman Warm “When giving of yourself, you receive in kind much more self worth and satisfaction than you probably gave in the first place.” ~~ Jandy Jorgenson Inside this year’s Christmas supplement: Letters to Santa ~~ Christmas church services Holiday memories ~~ Greetings from area businesses Supplement to The Journal, December 22, 2010 Heart Happy Holidays Wednesday, December 22, 2010 Warm Page 2 The Journal, Crosby, ND Alkabo couple known for Heart giving of themselves Wayne and Arletta Herman appreciate opportunities to give and to receive By Cecile Wehrman Some people just have a knack for giving of themselves. They do it so effortlessly, it makes giving to neighbors and community look easy, even though in reality, it takes a lot of time and effort. Giving to others, says Jandy Jorgenson, is a way of life for this year’s Warm Heart Award winners -- her parents, Wayne and Arletta Herman of rural Alkabo. “I am tremendously proud of my parents and the example they have instilled in me about being an active part of the world and appreciating all the opportunities there are to both give and receive,” said Jorgenson, That attitude, according to their neighbor, Elaine Leininger, is what makes them a worthy recipient of The Journal’s annual recognition for those who demonstrate a warm heart by giving of themselves and helping others. Leininger wrote the letter nominating her Wayne and Arletta Herman, winners of this year’s Warm Heart Award, paused for a photo on a snowy mountain in Alaska. neighbors. As Leininger recounted in her nomination letter, the Hermans give of their time and gifts in just about every venue available -- through their church and neighborhood. Because of their proximity to Montana, their neighborhood runs as far afield as Plentywood and Crosby. “They both have been very helpful with church Warm Heart projects as well as other community activities,” Leininger said. “But that is just a small part of all the good things Arletta and Wayne have done in the passing years. There were times when there were illnessess or deaths in the area and Arletta and Wayne would be among the first to be of help and always brought some food.” They have offered transportation for doctor appointments as far afield as Minot or Bismarck. “They were also available to be a caretaker no matter what the age or need,” Leininger said. Leininger recalled that when she had a short stay in the hospital recently, “guess who was here within a few hours of my return with a kettle of homemade soup and angel food cake? That’s right, it was Arletta.” In addition, “Wayne has spent countless hours providing music for the Good Samaritan Home in Crosby as well as the various nursing homes in Plentywood and also encourages and helps others to develop their musical skills.” Though Arletta is not so musically inclined, Leininger shared, Arletta has often brought the ingredients for making ice cream in a hand cranked ice cream maker to the nursing homes to give the residents a chance to remember simpler days and enjoy a treat. “I am grateful for their frienship and willing- MERRY CHRISTMAS Tis the season to say Thanks! As Jorgenson related, “My parents have been exceptional models in sharing appreciation for assisting those both more and less fortunate,” never expecting more than a simple handshake or a note of appreciation. “As I grew up with that mindset, it’s just a ‘habit’ to help others in an unfortunate situation,” said Jorgenson, and in that way, the Hermans have insured their gift of giving continues long after they are gone -- by inspiring others with their example. “It sort of comes full circle,” Jorgenson said, now that she is an adult and can appreciate the role models she had. “When giving of yourself, you receive in kind much more self worth and satisfaction than you probably gave in the first place,” said Jorgenson, regardless of any public recognition. Her parents taught her to never pass up an opportunity to serve in some capacity, whether through volunteering in the community or helping a neighbor in need. “It seems that most of the settlers in North Dakota are warm-hearted people,” said Leininger, but the Hermans have elevated it to a fine art. On the cover The photo of Wayne and Arletta Herman was taken atop a shortened conservation tower, probably used for spotting birds, on the Medicine Lake Wildlife Refuge. It used to be 100 feet tall, but only 60 feet were salvaged to make this tower when it was moved to a private farm location northwest of Dagmar, Mont. Happy Holidays! Elaine Nygaard Christmas Eve with Grandma T. The Christmas Eve spent with Grandma Torkelson was unforgetable. My sister, Marian, and I were four and five years old that year. Because my Mom and Dad both worked we stayed with Grnadma who lived about twenty miles from Minot. Grandma often ignored regular bedtimes for us and this night was no exception. We ate the usual Christmas Eve supper of boiled lutefisk swimming in melted butter, boiled potatoes drowning in melted butter, lefse slathered with butter and sugar and sweet soup smothered with thick “farm” cream. I can almost taste this as I’m thinking about it. After supper Grandma read Christmas stories to us. Soon the time had come to go to the eleven o’clock candle light service at the Lutheran Church. Marian and I dressed in our very best velvet dresses that Grandma made for us, long white stockings, and patent leather shoes under our woolen coats, caps and mittens. Grandma didn’t have a car. The church was too far away from her home to walk on a bitterly cold, winter night. So church friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Anderson, gave us a ride. The decorations in the church consisted of a tall spruce tree with shiny silver icicles draped on the branches. Miniature brass-colored candle holders were clipped onto the branch tips. Each holder held a lit small candle. The entire Samantha DeJardine “My warmest memory is going sledding with Aerial (Wolter) down a really big hill. Aerial went down first then came back up and pushed me down.” tree shimmered. Taller white candles with flickering flames sat on the alter, piano, and all the window sills-to me, a magical scene. Marian and I snuggled by Grandma during the singing, praying, and sermon. I felt special, secure and loved. We must have fallen asleep because the next thing I knew Grandma was gently nudging us awake. The service was completed; time to go home. After eating Christmas cookies and drinking hot cocoa we went to bed at one a.m., a big deal for us to go to bed that late. Mrs. Claus “My first stroll down Main Street last year began my warmest Chrsitmas memory. The beauty is unmatched except on postcards or in Norman Rockwell paintings, yet alive in Crosby. Natasha DeJardine “My favorite Christmas was when I got my hockey bag.” Area Holiday Worship services St. PATRICK’S St. JOHN’S & St. LUKE’S CATHOLIC CHURCHES Crosby, ND Portal, ND & Noonan, ND Father Biju Chitteth Fri.: Dec. 24, 5:30 p.m. - St. John’s; 8 p.m. - St. Luke’s; 11:45 p.m. - St. Patrick’s Regular weekend mass times will remain the same CROSBY ASSEMBLY OF GOD Crosby, ND Fri.: Dec. 24, 5p.m.; Christmas Eve Worship NOONAN LUTHERAN PARISH Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and Rural Churches Zion Lutheran, Noonan Peace Lutheran, Crosby Ethyl Mae Nelson, AIM Fri.: Dec. 24, 5 p.m.; Christmas Eve Worship at Bethlehem Sat.: Dec. 25, 10 a.m.; Christmas Day Worship at Zion Sun: Dec. 26, 9 a.m.; Peace Worship Sun: Dec. 26, 9 a.m.; Zion Worship McGREGOR - WHITE EARTH LUTHERAN PARISH Jim Hamann, Pastoral Ass’t.
