Welcome to Finlandia Ski Marathon
Winter has been challenging for many international ski marathons.
Nevertheless Finlandia Ski Marathon will be organised this year also.
Winter arrived in Lahti and Hollola just in time to delight skiers and
help us to organize a ski marathon.
In addition to marathon and shorter distances on weekend, has
Finlandia gotten a brand new event. Finlandia-Sprint will give the teams
of four the chance to challenge themselves and have fun together on
WCH2017 sprint course. That is one example of development steps
which we are constantly doing to serve you better and better.
Finlandia Ski Marathon gives you just as much challenge as you
like. Classic or free, long or short. Enjoy the journey, nature and
atmosphere on the course, on your own pace.

INSTRUCTIONS
BEFORE START
REGISTRATIONS
Participants must register for the Classic Technique (CT) 42km by 8.30 am and CT
32 km by 10.00 on Saturday 27.2.2016 and for the Free Technique (FT) 42km by
8.30 am and FT 20km by 10.00 on Sunday 28.2.2016. After February 15, 2016, the
entry fee can only be paid at the race office. You can fill in the registration form
in ­advance online: www.finlandiahiihto.fi. Print it and bring it with you to the race
­office staff to expedite your registration process.
RACE OFFICE
The Race Office is located at the Lahti Fair Centre in the Lahti Hall (Salpausselänkatu 7), and it is open at the following times:

From the race office you will get a bib package envelope with your bib (with disposable timing chip integrated). Your meal ticket is attached on the envelope (see
MEAL AFTER THE RACE page 17 for further details).
TRAFFIC AND PARKING
We highly recommend carpooling and the use of public transportation. Traffic
signs are posted on all major roads directing to the Sports Center of Lahti. The
main parking lot by the Sports Hall is primarily reserved for buses. Parking spaces
are limited and they are on the first-come-first basis. You can find a map of the
area at http://kartta.lahti.fi/internetwebmap/opaskartta.htm. Type in Urheilukeskus
or Salpausselänkatu 7 in the street column on the page.

TIMING/CHIP
The timing service of 2016 Finlandia Ski Marathon is provided by EQTiming. The
timing chip is attached in your bib and you can get it when picking up your participant material at the race office during the office hours. The chip only activates
when you walk through the start gate. You are responsible for having the bib on you
before the start. If you are not wearing you bib, you will not get a finishing time and
you will be disqualified.
GEAR BAGS
You will get your gear bag when picking up your participant material or at the gear
(equipment) storage point. Your change-over clothes should be put in the bag corresponding your bib number, and the bag should be tied properly before submission. You submit your bag to the staff at the Lahti Hall, and you will retrieve your
bag by showing your bib. Do not leave any valuables in the bag such as watches,
money, etc. If you want someone else to pick up your bag, give him/her your bib.
The organizers are not responsible for items left unattended elsewhere.
BIB
You may not block any sponsor logos on your bib. Your bib is personal and may not
be transferred to another person. The personal information needs to be changed
to match the right person before the start. Otherwise, the performance will be disqualified. A fee of 10 € will be charged for any changes to be made. Finlandia Ski
Masters have separate bibs. For the 42 km Classic white bibs are used and for the
32 km yellow bibs are used. For the 42 km Free white, for the 20 km Free yellow and
20 km Junior race orange bibs are used.

The 43rd Finlandia Ski Marathon takes place on February 27th and 28th, 2016. The
start and finish lines are at the Lahti Sports Center.

The 42 km race starts at the Lahti Ski Stadium on Saturday, February 27, 2016.
There will be a wave start in groups at 15 min intervals. The long race (42 km) starts
at 10 am. The groups start in the following order (starting numbers in parenthesis):
10:00 am (elite 1-100), (CCNC 101-300) and (301-1000)
10.15 (1001-2000)
10.30 (2001-3000)
* CCNC stands for Cross Country National Championship competition for veteran skiers (ages 40/50/60 for men
and 40/50 for women). Participation requires an official licence from the (Finnish) National Association of Skiers.
The skiers are requested to arrive at the Gate approximately 20 min prior to their
start. The skiers must wait for the start in the waiting area just outside the Gate
where their bibs are checked out. The groups are allowed to enter the Stadium area
10 minutes prior to their start. The elite group (1-100) will start in the front of the
pack in marked spots. Participants must follow the instructions provided by the
organizers in order to get their chips activated.
Participants need to have their bibs on before entering the start area. All the starts
are captured on video and the organizers have the right to disqualify anyone guilty
of false starting.
We kindly request everyone to stay calm and remain in his/her place during the
start procedures. In case of a broken ski or pole, an exchange point is located on
the top of the first hill about 500 m from the start. Do not turn back and return to the
stadium. Please, use extra caution in the first uphill.
START, CL 32 km at 11.00 AM
The 32 km race is a mass start, and the take-off time is at 11.00 am, Saturday 27,
2016. Participants must follow the instructions provided by the organizers in order
to get their chips activated.
Participants need to have their bibs on before entering the start area. All the starts
are captured on video and the organizers have the right to disqualify anyone guilty
of false starting.
We kindly request everyone to stay calm and remain in their places during the start
procedures. In case of a broken ski or pole, an exchange point is located on the
top of the first hill about 500 m from the start. Do not turn back and return to the
stadium. Please, use extra caution in the first uphill.
The stadium closes at 11.05, after which no one is allowed to enter the course.

START, FREE 42 km at 10:00 AM
The 42 km race starts at 10:00 from the Lahti Ski Stadium on Sunday, February 28,
2016. There will be a wave start in groups of 500 participants at 15 min intervals.
The elite group (6000-6100) will start in the front of the pack in marked spots. The
start times for the groups are as follows (starting numbers in parenthesis):
10.00 (6001-6101 elite) and (6101-6500)
10.15 (6501-7000)
10.30 (7001-7500)

THE COURSE AND SERVICE
SERVICE STATIONS
On the 42 km course, there are five service stations: Messilä, Hälvälä, Työtjärvi, Heinsuo and Tapanila. In the 32 km course, there are three service stations: Messilä,
Heinsuo and Tapanila. In the 20 km course, there are two service stations: Messilä
and Tapanila. On the way back towards the finish, Tapanila serves drinks (juice)
for skiers.

Each service station serves water and sports drinks. In addition, the service stations serve the following energy
supplements:
Messilä**: blueberry soup, pickles and raisins, Hälvälä: juice, pickles, bread and bananas, Työtjärvi: fructose,
blueberry soup, pickles and bread Heinsuo**: coffee, bread + spread, meat bouillon, bananas, pickles and blueberry soup, Tapanila**: coffee, tea, juice, beer, pickles, Finish: water and juice
Service stations marked with stars (**) are also on the 32 km course.
SKI TECHNIQUE
In the Classic 42 km and 32 km races, only classic technique is allowed. In the Free
42 km and 20 km races, free technique is allowed (classic is also allowed). The ski
technique control is enforced during the races.
INSTRUCTIONS AND REGULATIONS
Participants take part in the aforementioned races at their own risk. They must follow the orders by staff members when crossing roads while skiing. Skiers should
always use the track on the right, the one on the left is for passing. No one needs
to yield while skiing, except in the elite group where slower skiers should give way
for faster ones.

The elite skiers are allowed to replace only their broken equipment during the race
– the elite skiers are also required to present their broken equipment to the Jury.
For the rest of the participants changing equipment is allowed for whatever reason.
Each service station has extra poles available. The poles must be returned to the
Race Office after the race to the staff - otherwise the organizer is allowed to fine the
participant for their value.
Removing or covering your bib is forbidden and may result in disqualification from
the race.
FIRST AID
The first aid is carried out by students from Lahti Polytechnic Medical School supervised by a licensed doctor. Each service station has first aid points where assistance is provided for blisters and frostbites. The first aid point at the stadium is
located in the hall outside of the race office. In addition, first aid staff members are
circling around the stadium area. Finlandia Ski Marathon staff members can also
assist you in case you need to contact the first aid personnel.
The general emergency number in Finland is 112.
WAX SERVICE
Wax service is available at service stations provided by Startex. Prepare your skis
based on your own experience and take some wax with you for the race.

REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT
Participants can get replacement poles at the service stations. The poles need to
be returned to the staff members at the lost and found after the race. The lost and
found service is located at customer service point in the race office. Unreturned
poles will be charged.
WITHDRAWAL FROM RACE
If a skier decides to withdraw from the race, he/she must immediately inform the
officials of the nearest pit stop and hand in the number bib or some other proof of
identity. A skier, who has not arrived at the pit stop before the closing time (see the
schedule), will be obliged to withdraw from the race for security reasons. A skier
who arrives at the finish after the time limit (on Saturday 18.00 and on Sunday
17.00) will be disqualified, and will not be included in the result list.
If exhaustion overcomes you while skiing, try to rest a moment and then continue
to the next pit stop, where you can officially withdraw and later be transported to
Lahti. A scooter patrol (snowmobile) will follow all skiers and - if necessary - transport the stricken skiers to the Finish Area.
AFTER THE RACE
FINISH
Lahti Ski Stadium serves as the finish of the Finlandia Ski Marathon. The final
stretch of the Finlandia Ski Marathon follow the World Ski Championship tracks
and the final descent to the stadium is relatively steep and twisted. Please be careful!
There are two rows after the finish line for participants to go through, and a race
official will guide you to the right one. Please, follow the orders and stay calm in
order to expedite the service for you and your fellow skiers in the finish area. All
skiers who finish within the time limit will be awarded with a Finlandia Ski Marathon

AWARDS AND PRIZES
Everyone finishing within the time limit (Saturday by 6 pm and Sunday by 5 pm)
will be awarded with a Finlandia Ski Marathon medal. The medals are given out immediately after crossing the finish line. Skiers are awarded with bronze medals and
Finlandia Masters (completed all Finlandia Ski Marathons) with gold medals.

The prize giving ceremonies will take place at the Fair Centre (Vesijärvihalli), at 1
pm on both days.
TEAM COMPETITION
The team competition will be raced in both 42 km distances. Team members are
required to have a same team name and the name must be written exactly the same
way for every member of the team. Each team needs to have at least four skiers
to be qualified in the team competition. There is no maximum age limit. Four best
skiers’ times are added up and the team with the fastest overall time wins. The winners will be notified personally after the race, and they will be awarded with Start
ski poles.

SKI STORAGE
Skis can be left at the guarded ski storage point in the Lahti Hall (see the map). The
ski storage is included so it doesn’t cost anything for the participants. Regular race
office hours apply.
SAUNAS AND SHOWERS
Saunas are included for the participants.
Sauna for women is located close to the Race Office, same building but the entrance is from outside under the big LCD screen (Suurhalli, Jari-Sauna). For men,
the sauna is located at the Ski Jump Grand Stand building.
Even if you feel exhausted after the race, do not stay in hot sauna for too long.
There are thousands of other skiers coming in, so please give room to everyone.
MEAL AFTER THE RACE
The entry fee includes a meal after the race at Koti
Restaurant in the Fair Center. The meal ticked
can be teared off from your bib package envelope
(yellow area). The meal consists of soup, bread,
spread and juice/milk.

RESULTS
You can check the live unofficial results on the Internet at www.finlandiahiihto.fi.
DISQUALIFICATION
The organizers reserve the right to disqualify a skier and remove him/her from the
track if he/she fails to follow the regulations of the Finlandia Ski Marathon or the
organizers’ specific instructions. Any participant’s performance is disqualified if
she/he uses someone else’s bib.
JURY
The event’s jury consists of a technical delegate of FIS (TD), a TD assistant and
the race director. In addition to jury duties, they serve as consultants in any issues
regarding the race.

PROTESTS
Written protest must be delivered within 15 minutes after the first 100 (one hundred) competitors have finished the race (The protest fee according to the rules
of FIS is the value of CHF 100 or the equivalent value). Protests concerning other
skiers must be made within 15 minutes after the last skier has finished the race.
DOPING TEST
The Finnish Anti-Doping Committee has the right to perform doping tests on skiers.
LOST AND FOUND
Lost and found is located at the customer service point (Info point) in the race office. You can also submit lost items there. After the race day, you can call the race
office at +358449757712 and +358449757713.
Ask about any items that you may have lost. Any valuables will be submitted to
Lahti Police Station after three days. Finlandia Ski Marathon keeps other lost items
for three months.

In case Finlandia Ski Marathon is forced to be cancelled due to weather conditions
or for any other reason that is out of the orgaziner’s control, the organizer have
the right to keep 50% of the admission fee and the remaining 50% is automatically
transferred to the next year’s event admission.
The organizer and the registered skier can mutually agree on another method of
reimbursement if needed.
In the event of cancellation, a skier or his team/group is not entitled to receive a
reimbursement for his/her admission fee. However if the admission is cancelled
before 31st of December of the respective year a skier can transfer 50% of the
payment to the next year’s admission fee. The skier is required to inform Finlandiahiihto’s office about the cancellations.
If the course is shortened due to extreme snow conditions or any other cause that
the organizer has no control over, the admission fee is not reimbursed nor is the
skier entitled to any discounts or any other forms of reimbursement.
In case of sickness, a skier can transfer 50% of the payment to the next year’s admission fee after submitting a doctor’s certificate by March 30th of the respective
year.
To be entitled for a reimbursement you must apply for it from the Finlandia-hiihto’s
office by the end of March after the race.
Reimbursements are only valid during the registration period for the next race and
will void after if not used. Reimbursements are personal and can’t be transferred
to another person.
CHANGE OF EMAIL ADDRESS
In case your email address has changed, you can provide the Organizers with your
new address by phone, email or dropping by at the info point in the race office.
Your email address is important for us as for example the confirmation letters are
only sent by email.

TAKE IT EASY
Start carefully and pace yourself. Use extra caution in the start. Do not lift your
poles high up to cause any harm to your fellow skiers. Do not rush in the beginning.
Enjoy the refreshments that our service stations can offer. Signs at the stations will
indicate the distance to the next station. Do not push yourself too hard. If you feel
too exhausted, rest a moment or give up. Remember that a sick person needs to
be in bed at home. Do not try to do the race if you feel sick! If you are more than 40
years old and have not actively done sports, we recommend you to take a physical
test.
EQUIPMENT AND GEAR
When getting the right equipment and gear for marathon skiing, we hope that you
take the following recommendations into account:
• Wear clothes that stop the wind in the front and let air out in the back
• Recreational skiers should not use thin racing suits

Train and prepare well before entering the race
Do not participate if you are sick or do not feel well
Get a doctor’s permission if you have just recovered from any illness
Do not risk your health if you are recovering from an injury – stay at home!
Consult with your physician if you suffer from diabetes, cardiovascular disease
or any other symptoms that may affect your physical performance
Take all necessary medications with you
Do not ski with a full stomach
Drink fluids at every service station and avoid cold drinks
Protect your eyes from the sun
Each station has a first aid team
Report all injuries or people needing medical attention to the staff members at
the service stations or to the scooter teams
Serious cases should be reported by calling directly at 112 (emergency nro)

There is the Stadium Winter Sport Exhibition in the Fair Centre, Vesijärvi Hall. There
are shops and stands of our official partners in the Finlandia-Expo area.
INFO & WORLDLOPPET POINT
Finlandia Ski Marathon and Worldloppet info point is located in the race office. At
the info point, you can get information about the races and any other Nordic skiing
related issues.
The Finlandia Ski Marathon is one of the twenty long distance cross-country skiing
events, which together form the Worldloppet (later WL). Any skier who has completed ten competitions (one of them must be skied overseas) can receive the title
of Worldloppet Master. The results shall be written in the Official WL-Passport. To
receive the WL-Master Diploma, and a gold-plated medal, the skier must send the
WL-Passport to WL-Central Office (Italy) for checking by May 1, 2016. There will be
a Worldloppet stand at the Race Office, where the skier can buy passports and get
the stamp for accepted skiing. The passport costs 30 Euros, be aware that we have
a limited supply of them. Information of other WL-races can also be found at the
WL-stand.

SPECIAL STAMP
Lahti Stamp Club has designed a special stamp for Finlandia Ski Marathon based
on the 2016 medal. Special envelopes and postcards can be purchased at the Fair
Center. Limited availability.
EVENING DINNER (26.2.2016)
WORLDLOPPET MASTERS’ AND FINLANDIA SKI MARATHON MASTERS’ SPECIAL EVENTS
Finlandia Ski Marathon cordially invites all Finlandia Masters to a special event
with coffee at 5-6.30 pm on Friday February 20, 2016. For Worldloppet Masters, a
special evening dinner is arranged starting at 7 pm on Friday, February 20, 2016.
Price for the dinner is 15 €/person, tickets can be bought from the location.

Avi Studio takes pictures of skiers on the course and in the finish. A link to the
photo gallery will be delivered to skiers within 1-2 weeks after the race. You can
order pictures online.

The railway station is about 1 km from the Sports Center. The bus station is located
Next to the railway station. Our partner ReissuRuoti will arrange shuttle bus transport from the station to the stadium. The train schedules can be found at www.vr.fi
