Polar Bear 2015 is behind us. In spite of the weather we had a successful event. Thanks again to everyone who participated on Sunday as well as to those who couldn’t be with us but contributed in other ways. Just a couple more weeks until we turn our clocks ahead and gain an extra hour of sunlight! This, despite what the thermometer or calendar reads, is my start of spring! I look forward to getting back on the bike and taking some nice member planned rides. At the end of March we will be having our first one which is being coordinated by Steve Scott. We have volunteers to plan rides for April and May but there are plenty of months left in the year for YOU to plan a ride for your chapter. Just contact Matt and let him know which month you would like. Ice Cream rides will resume in a couple months as well as other fun times. If you have an idea please don’t hesitate to let us know. Chapter B Monthly Gathering Chapter B meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7pm. 6pm to socialize and eat. All guests are welcomed. Providence Sq Grill 941 Providence Sq Shopping Center Virginia Beach, VA Chapter VA-B Page 2 February 2015 Polar Bear Run 2015 by Diana Merciez Another fantastic year for Polar Bear! The rain and snow held off and we had 50 degree weather. Thank you to all who participated and who donated their time and money to help make our event a success. The actual ride was not held due to the back roads still being a bit hazardous. But we compensated by having plenty of games and activities for those who came out. Delicious chili was enjoyed by all as well as a bevy of sweet treats. Prize and award recipients were given to the following: PLAQUES: Largest non-gwrra group: The Ghormley Family Largest gwrra group: Chapter O (Williamsburg) Farthest rider(s): The Hazletts and Dowells Youngest: Luke Ghormley Oldest: Bill Lee POKER HANDS: 1st place Dale Miller 2nd place Rick Makowski (they each won a polar bear statue mounted on wooden base) SWEEPSTAKES BOARD: $50 Jim Sexton POLAR BEAR END TABLE: Debbie Dowell 50/50: $159 Amanda Ghormley Go Pro Silver Hero:Superman (aka) Dennis Weston Chapter VA-B Page 4 February 2015 Polar Bear Run 2015 by Diana Merciez Part of what makes Polar Bear fun is the chance to win any number of prizes from our prize table. This year we had 52 prizes! Thank you to everyone in our chapter that donated an item(s). We had several businesses donate as well. If you find yourself in need of any of the services that these businesses provide, please consider visiting them and thank them for their support. But that’s OK---we have fun riding events to look forward to when the weather finally does decide to break! Our plan as the MEC”s for the chapter are to not only recruit new members but to concentrate on membership retention. The events and activities are geared to be fun and inviting! We want everyone to be involved and have a REAL reason to attend. Going forward there are some “bike night” dates in the works as well as we are actively looking for community events to be present at as MEC’s to bring motorcycle safety and GWRRA to everyone’s attention. We are open to any ideas chapter members may have! We are planning on getting out to various chapters as our schedules permit. We have different schedules and our ride time is down compared to years past. Plus, I had to have my rear tire changed. As I checked the air in the tires, there was a worn area that was either at the top of the tire or at the bottom where you couldn’t see it. Well, I rode to work last month and a customer of mine came in and asked me “what would happen if I had a blowout going down the interstate doing 50 to 60 mph on your back tire?” That made me think…why, what did you do to it?…but proceeded to tell him what could happen and I asked him why he asked. He called me to the window and pointed out the wear on the tire and I was surprised. Since I already had a back tire form winning them at Rally in the Valley two years ago, I had it put on and have been on the road some since then. Turning to upcoming events we are looking forward to our Polar Bear Run coming up this month. Hopefully the weather will be like last year and bring out the bikers that it did last year and more. Come on out and support the chapter and see if you can talk other bikers into supporting this awesome event. Next month, we are planning on going to Florida with Jim Sexton and Carol Hill for Daytona Beach Bike Week. We hope to see Al and Brandy Evans along with Nick and Teresa Knox there too. What about Matt? There are about 500,000 people that make their way to the rally area for this 10-day event. We won’t be there for every day but we went to Biketoberfest in 2008 and enjoyed it a lot so that is why we wanted to do Bike Week. We will be there during our March gathering so we will see you on the road when we get back. Until then ride safe and enjoy you Goldwing. Safety is the state of being “safe”, the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. What does it mean to be Safe? 1. It means a complete understanding and knowledge of every step that must be taken and the realization that mistakes could be costly. 2. It means good judgment. Never rely on luck; always be prepared to cope with unexpected situations and being alert when following your routine. 3. It means consideration for the family and friends that depends on you and for your own welfare. How do we achieve an acceptable level of safety in the things that we do? It all comes down to preparation and a checklist. There are many checklists; there are checklists for everything that we do. A checklist helps us to organize an activity. And, it allows us to identify areas of potential short comings/danger in our activities and to establish remedies for the possible short comings/danger. One checklist that we can use before getting back on the road after the colder months is the T-Clock inspection checklist. And for those that want to explore more information on checklists, I recommend “The Checklist Manifesto, How to Get Things Right” by Atul Gawande. This is about a 200 page book and you won’t regret reading it. Scotty Chapter Educator Chapter VA-B Page 11 February 2015 T-CLOCK Inspection Worksheet T-CLOCK is a mnemonic developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for assisting you in doing a comprehensive pre-ride (or a pre-purchase) inspection of a motorcycle. Check off Tech Corner - Chapter “B” submitted by Dave Hunter We have had several complaints about the tpms (tire pressure monitor system) on some of the 2014-2015 gl1800 models recently purchased. There are some things we have figured out lately. First, the sensors in the wheels can have their batteries go dead if they are not charged occasionally. The batteries get charged by turning the wheels! If the bike has been sitting ( like travelling from japan and then resting in a showroom, or sitting in your garage because the weather this year has been miserable ) the batteries will discharge. The remedy is to ride the bike for about ten minutes to bring the batteries back up. Once the batteries are charged there may be an error code reordered in the motorcycles computer. This will cause a tire lamp to illuminate on the dash. To remedy this it is necessary to remove the seat, short the tpms code wire and go for another ride of 7-10 minutes. Once this is completed it may be necessary to restore recognition of the tire sensors with the motorcycles computer. This can only be done with a tpms special tool. I recently serviced & fixed a system that had been to several other dealers on numerous occasions in north carolina, they had not been able to make the system work for six months. If you don’t have the tpms system on your goldwing... Check your tire pressures!!! My name is Wil Bell, aka “MAD Wil”, because it sounds way better than MAC Wil. I am the new Virginia District Motorist Awareness Coordinator. I also happen to be an Assistant Virginia District Educator for the North part of our great state. I’m a Pittsburgh, PA native and graduated from Slippery Rock University a long time ago. I’m a Retired Air Force Major and currently a Realtor with Long & Foster in Northern Virginia, by Dulles IAP. I’ve been married to Darlene over 30 years, have 2 adult children Amanda & Grant, and my after 40 baby, soon to be teen, Kathryn. My GoldWing is a Metallic Silver 2002 all decked out with an Air Force/Military Theme. I say Lights and Chrome…Good. Okay, let’s get MAD, but in a good way and oh, we’re the other MAD…not to be confused with MADD (Mother’s Against Druck Driving”)which is an awesome organization. But this is how I try to introduce myself and it makes for a great icebreaker. It may take a year or two for me to travel to EVERY Virginia GWRRA Chapter to spread my MAD words but it’s my goal. What I’ve learned since becoming a GWRRA member back in 2001 is that they really stand by their Motto: “Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge.” I tend to play the most in the “Safety & Knowledge” portion of the motto. The MAD program is under the GWRRA Rider Education umbrella. We have a great Motto as well: “Share the Road.” Guess what? We also happen to have a mission: “To Facilitate A Reduction in Motorcycle Crashes with Other Motor Vehicles.” I love to highlight, it brings home the purpose of what EACH of us motorcycle rider’s AND co-riders can impart to the community. Any one of us can use these Public Service Announcements at work, community meetings, schools and the like. So go ahead…Get MAD…let’s help ourselves get the words out to the public that we ride on the same roads…we just look different! Do you need a MAD sign like the one at the right? Some of us keep a supply of these to lend out or we can sell you some for your own events: $5 each, it’s worth every penny. Does your school, company or organizations have Safety meetings? Ask to say a few words about GWRRA’s MAD. Ask to display a MAD sign. Ask to hand out MAD pamphlets. Ask to make one of the above PSA’s into the speaker’s presentation. If we can get just one person to look twice, job well done! Need Help with MAD? Need ideas?
