Christmas… hasn’t this year just flown by? We have so many talented choreographers in this country & so much good Aussie music. Well done to I am sure most of you have heard the very sad news of Olive, Frances, Stephen & all. Then in October we had the passing of Ivan Dawes. Our deepest sympathy to ‘Clogtober’ (SA). I couldn’t get to this one either but Molly, Jasmine, Kingsley & families. I was not privileged by all accounts it was another smash hit. More great to know Ivan personally but from all accounts he was a routines. Good work Irmgard & Co. Then it was the wonderful supporter of not only Square Dance, but Hillbillies turn to have a wonderful clog day – Clog Clogging as well and he will be sadly missed. Willow (NSW). Another amazing day had by all. Also, the passing of Merv Duplock. Merv & Zilah were Great work by Vickie & her team. instrumental in the formation of the Chug a Lug A lot of hard work goes into these weekends/days & Cloggers in Brisbane. Merv was always very supportive it’s great to see them so well supported by not only the of anything clogging & was a great help with the 1999 local dancers but from all around the country. CLOG WILLOW 201 1 Hillbillies Cloggers West Pymble and South Hurstville Leader: Vickie Dean What a wonderful day we had for Clog Willow, catching up with many cloggers we don`t get to see too often. Congratulations to the Hillbillies group for a well-organized event and many thanks to all who contributed food for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Just as well we had plenty of dancing to get rid of all the extra calories! The lucky recipients of the door and raffle prizes were very happy and thanks must go to Angela for arranging these. Vickie and the guest cuers kept the dancing going and the introduction to Square dancing was hilarious and enthusiastic. It was also an opportunity to brag about new grandchildren and swap photos, eg Isaac & Lucas. Kathy Trotman enjoyed her trip to the USA, and now Sandra is presently holidaying there. We hope Judy is enjoying her cruise. Recently contacted Ron Hargreaves: he seemed in good spirits. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Gwen Muir who passed away recently after a long illness. Birthday greetings to Nancy, Irene and Debbie. We wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2012. Thanks to everyone for your continued support-it is really appreciated Love to all Meg ACA NZ State Report Sunstate Cloggers Hello everyone Leaders: Olive Borovsky & Stephen Hope Summer is slowly arriving in Auckland. That means gardening, water sports, boating days, relaxing in the sunshine. That’s what happens when clogging stops for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Another exciting part of our clogging year is over as Aussie Clog was the last event for us. Lots of fun, friendship and great dancing. Well done Brisbane cloggers and leaders. Lots of new dances added to the convention dances to keep u all pretty busy! We have just finished voting for the 2012 dance list. With so many great dances from Cairns and Nelson conventions, we had a total of 47 to vote on. From our guest Cheryl Holland, 4 dances on our list. From Lelia and Russ Hunsaker, 3 dances on our list, plus 2 more dances from Australian choreographers. All cue sheets will eventually be on the NZCA webpage http://nzclogging.webs.com/ AUCKLAND CONVENTION MAY 4-5-6, 2012. Our guest instructor is Eric Bice. Once the Christmas and festive season are finished, May will be here all too soon. All registration information can be downloaded from the NZCA webpage.(see above) Cue sheets close for stamping th on 9 March, really early! So choreographers, send your cue sheets in as soon as you like and as many as you like. And we’d like you to demo too! Dancer registrations close th 6 April. The most Australian cloggers we’ve had to a NZ convention is 25, that was in 2000. We’d really like to beat that number next year. It’s 4 ½ months before Adelaide convention so plenty of time to save for both. The main hall area is just about the same area as the Cairns school hall with a full size stage, so plenty of room. Accommodation is about 8.5 kms to the venue, an easy route if you have a hire car, if not, you will need the weekend shuttle. I’m sure there will be questions and queries so please email me [email protected] and I’ll get straight back to you. All NZ clubs have enjoyed another year of challenging clogging and will be looking forward to the summer holidays. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in Auckland in May!! Till next time Jean Watford The afterparty provided much entertainment as usual: Sunstaters lead by Mary did their usual crazy best – this time as the Village People – pretty sexy polic woman (Claire) and John gave a great performance as the Indian and both Mary’s and Betty completing the group. I have moved across the border but at heart am still a Queenslander! Many thanks to Shirley and Frances at Chugs for a lovely supper at which we danced some of my favourite dances including Cajun Moon, Lonely Goatherd and High Lonesome. I’ll be back as often as I can – can’t survive without my clogging!! One of our new dancers, Gabe, was in Cairns at the time of the convention and was most impressed to see hundreds of dancers on the floor learning a new dance and then dancing it through. Inspires everyone doesn’t it? Congratulations to Frances’ Get Rhythm Cloggers on winning Senior Superstars. We still have our end of year break up to look forward to. See you on the floor again soon, Forever dancin’ Dancin’ forever Mary Thorpe Get Rhythm Dance Team Brisbane Leaders: Stephen Hope and Frances Look The Team finished the year in a blaze of dancing glory having been invited to dance at all of the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Senior Christmas Parties, that being twice a day for five days in a row. The huge crowds who attended each party were treated to morning or afternoon tea by the Brisbane City Council (yummy) and then ON WITH THE SHOW! Having developed a loyal band of supporters from the Seniors’ Superstar Contest and other appearances over the past years, the Team were given a resounding greeting as they took to the stage, and at the end of each performance, dancing Symphony of The Seas they once again modestly accepted the ringing applause, whistles, and cheers of a very appreciative audience. THANK YOU TEAM, for all your hard work, support and friendship: you did Clogging and yourselves proud. To each and every one of the Team, your families for their support and patience, the ‘back-up’ crew, and the Cloggers from around Australia who have wished us well and congratulated us in our endeavours, have yourselves a very Merry Christmas and enjoy the holidays. o0o As the calendar for two-o-one-two is hung upon the wall And the Christmas decorations are stacked neatly in the hall, We open up our diaries and make our entries there Of Birthdays and other coming events with family and friends we’ll share, And there’s one day we circle and we make it very clear The starting date for Clogging in another special New Year. o0o Sincerely, Stephen and Frances 50 Plus Activities Centre 1 57 Ann Street Brisbane City Leaders: Olive, Dian, Frances Double Jingle Cloggers Lutwyche Leaders: Frances and Dian Chug A Lug Cloggers Leaders: Frances Look, Stephen Hope A sincere THANK YOU to all our dancers, a number of whom dance at all of the above named Clogging Clubs, for another wonderful year. Beginners, buoyed up by the enthusiasm of the more experienced dancers, continue to progress well, and hopefully the number of ‘recruits’ will continue to grow next year. The assistance from our members with many of the tasks which abound at Club sessions is appreciated and helps lessen the load on the Leaders. May you all have a joyous, holy Christmas, and a sincere wish that we shall all meet again in 2012. HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR CRUISIN’ COUNTRY CRUISE OCT 2011 Lorraine Taylor: Perth WA As a "virgin" cruiser I enjoyed it all - so much to do, so many things to see and be involved in if you wanted to, or just laze about on a sun lounge. Food was plentiful and fabulous. Crew were always helpful wand courteous. I would highly recommend Cruisin' Country 2 to anyone even remotely thinking of a short and very enjoyable way to spend a week. Janet, Kate, Jeannie and I had a wonderful time. Karyn Unstead: Esperance WA It was fantastic, with the opportunity to see so many renowned country music entertainers who gave their all in their performances but were so readily available for a chat at any time. Wherever we went all over the ship there was music and fun and happy people. The crew had as much fun as the rest of us!! Keith Unstead: Esperance WA Just look at this photo to understand MY favourite moment………………..aaaah bliss. Steve and Alan: Sydney NSW We are so fortunate to live overlooking the Sydney Harbour. This is a photo of the Rhapsody of The Seas entering Sydney Harbour early on the morning of our cruise. In no time at all we were aboard and into the fun times and meeting friends. It was great to be able to have the time to chat and wine and dine together as well as enjoying the music and dancing available to all. Clogging fun especially when the ship had a slight “roll” – makes some of the steps, quite different! Bev and “Killer” Kilpatrick: Victoria It was a magic cruise that just got better and better each day. Up front & personal with some favourite and generous Country Artists who gave us their all every single day. We especially loved our day visit to a little piece of heaven (the Isle of Pines) where we all enjoyed the turquoise waters. The atmosphere on board with such happy and like-minded people was quite special I think and I would book again in the blink of an eye. A rare treat we absolutely deserve. Bev McLachlan: Qld We’re sure everyone enjoyed the clogging on-board, and it was a great experience teaching clogging on the high seas!! Thanks to Ben for his input and assistance and to the other leaders who helped out by standing around the edges and assisting with the Intro to Clogging classes. Can’t wait to do it all again. The interior of the theatre where every country music artist had a double show each evening at 6 & at 8pm - just look at all those people – seats 800! Oh is that Judy Hoyle and yours truly waving? We’re probably hoping that Adam Harvey will notice us!!!! In foreground Nev McLachlan discussing yet another midnight Square Dance Party?? Halloween revelry with Lesley and Chris from Esperance WA Some WA Cloggers and Steve Berry enjoying the dancing Final night antics She’s at it again! IVAN DAWES 1ST FEBRUARY 1927 TO 8TH OCTOBER 2011 Our Dad, Ivan, was born on 1st February 1927, the youngest of 5 children of Harry and Bella Dawes. Dad grew up with his brother Dick, who was 17 years older than him and his sister Myrtle 19 years older. He went to Mt Hawthorn Primary School and then Perth Boys School. On leaving school Dad started work in the office of Millers Timber and Trading. In February 1945, the day after his 18th birthday, he joined the R.A.A.F., choosing the air force because that was where his brother Dick was serving. Remember, the Second World War was in its final year. After basic training he eventually became a pay clerk. In May 1948 he went back to civilian life and Rehab offered him a course to qualify for the State Civil Service. Dad completed it in 12 months and was sent to the State Housing Commission. He went to night school and studied to gain a Diploma of Public Administration and stayed with State Housing until his retirement in 1987. The first love of his life was probably classical music. He grew up surrounded by music, his sister Myrtle played both the violin and piano. Dad had this huge collection of classical records although recently he was more likely to listen to a CD or ABC FM on his digital radio. On long weekends and holidays he went camping. His old ‘Commer’ truck could be fitted with a tent top for sleeping and apart from taking his mother and aunt around the south-west of WA, he and his cousin Ernie took a trip around Australia in it. Later the truck was replaced by a F.B. Holden station wagon known affectionately as Phoebe and with friends Stan, Alec & Ted in their 4WD's he tripped around most of Western Australia. If one believes all the stories he used to tell it could have been a hair-raising experience! This passion for travelling would stay with Dad for his entire life Our Uncle Dick and his wife Eva introduced Dad to square dancing in the fifties when he used to dance at the Wembley Stars club. Dad also did some old time dancing. That is where he met Mum- at the Embassy Ballroom. Mum says she liked him at first because he made her laugh! They met in early August, got engaged in September and married on 8th December 1962. They obviously couldn't see any point in a long engagement. Spent their honeymoon exploring the south-west and south of WA and yes, they were camping with the car (Phoebe). The family Mum and Dad both wanted started to appear and everything else took a back seat for a few years. First there was Ainslie, then Garnet followed by Warrick, then Jasmine, and finally me, Kingsley. Having a young family may have stopped Dad and Mum square dancing but it didn't stop them travelling. They drove to the eastern states with Ainslie a toddler and Garnet only 6 months. Jasmine went camping when she was 6 weeks old and I had my 3rd birthday in New Zealand. When the family grew too big for the car and caravanette, Dad bought a Bedford bus and converted it to a caravan and in 1970 took all of us around Australia. About this time Dad and Mum were invited to get back into square dancing, starting off with Kevin Kelly in North Perth and then going to the White Gum Valley Club. Square dancing holidays were the norm with Dad as I was growing up. Like in 1975 driving through the centre of WA to Alice Springs via Laverton to finally arrive in Melbourne for a convention, or flying to Hobart in 1976 and touring Tassie with all the other dancers from WA. And it wasn't just Australia we saw. In 1973 we all flew to the U.K. to visit my Uncle John and his family: another year we were in Hong Kong and Greece for Christmas. Dad also loved photography and on many of these trips, we would all wait patiently while he set up the Leica and checked his light meter. Dad and Mum got more and more involved with square dancing. They ran a children's club Wanneroo Whirlaways for several years, and in 1977 Dad became Editor of the magazine "Squaring around WA” a job he did for the next 20 years!! Dad was a Life member of Greenfinches Square Dance Club and The Square Dance Society of WA. He was on the National Square Dance Society of Australia Honor Roll and was a life Patron of the Australian National Square Dance Conventions. In 1989 at the ripe age of 62 Dad took up clogging which he loved! Particular favourites were "Neutron Dance" and "Bad" and he continued well into his 70’s. Eventually he would clog hanging on to the ballet bar at the hall, but he kept coming along and would always enjoy a chat and his cup of tea. We must not forget Dad's particular sense of humour. For a man who loves the English language he did some dreadful things to it. His speciality was puns and one-liners and he used to write them on the back of napkins and envelopes at family gatherings where they would evoke as many groans as they did laughter. Dad also loved to tell stories and follows the advice of a man who once said "never let the truth spoil a good story". Dad was always very, very proud of his family. In his later life Dad took real pleasure in just being around us. He loved being Dadda to his 13 grand kids and he welcomed all of our partners and extended family in without hesitation, which I always thought was very classy. At Christmas and other get togethers, he would regularly sit quietly at the end of the table holding hands with Mum with a small smile on his face reflecting on what his family had evolved into. We all love our Dad and we miss him. Kingsley and Jasmine Dawes Thank you to all our clogging and square dance friends for your messages of love and support and your memories of our wonderful Dad.
